The full-size Pilot Honda crossover appeared in Russia only with the release of the 2nd generation. Compatriots for a long time got used to the brutal-angular design Japanese car, but immediately appreciated the technical capabilities of the 2008 Honda Pilot (257 hp engine, 5 speed modes automatic transmission, all-wheel drive), economical consumption fuel (provided by work automatic system, which selects the mode of movement depending on road conditions) and the maximum inner space(3 rows of seats, the last two - fold "to the floor", increasing the volume of the trunk). The crossover was immediately classified as family cars- Honda Pilot was ideally suited for the role of the only car in the family. The warranty period was set by the manufacturer at 3 years (or 100 thousand kilometers). 
Every year, the manufacturer improved its competitive development, and by the time the time came for the release of the third generation, the car was in stable demand in the Russian market. How did the characteristics of the crossover change? Did the technical problems of the car fall into the field of view of the regular innovators, were the shortcomings and errors corrected during the next restyling?
Model description
The Japanese concern has always respected the unspoken deadlines for the release of new models. New developments appeared on the market with enviable stability (every five years) - the next generations of the CR-V and Pilot models. 
So, in 2008, the company first introduced the world to the second generation of an 8-seater crossover Pilot. Honda Pilot 2 was also successfully updated: restyling was carried out by the concern in 2011. Serious improvements touched the appearance, lighting system, appeared new modification power plant. This is the same engine, but to please Russian realities power reduced to 249 hp Whether reduced, the question is open. It was expected that the renewal of the Honda Pilot line in 2014 would be completed. But, instead, in 2015, the company was already preparing a layout of the third generation of crossovers, despite the difficult situation on the market (decrease in sales).
Technical capabilities
The "Japanese" of the second generation is a powerful, dynamic and passable crossover. The manufacturer endowed the Honda Pilot 2008 with technical characteristics due to:
- 5-speed automatic transmission (the manufacturer abandoned the manual transmission, preparing the second generation of Pilot crossovers),
- plug-in all-wheel drive (proprietary system VTM-4),
- 3.5 liter engine, 257 hp. (acceleration in 9.9 seconds, maximum speed - 180 km / h). Approximately with the same indicators, but with a power of 249 hp. after reystaling.
Transmission
Experts called the 2008 Honda Pilot transmission "unpretentious" and yet requiring competent after-sales service(systematic monitoring of the condition of the oil, timely detection of oil leaks). 
Permeability, maneuverability
Claimed ground clearance - 203 mm. Four-wheel drive is connected automatically during a quick start or slip (the corresponding signal is sent from the sensors). The rest of the time, traction goes to the front wheels. The Japanese full-size crossover cannot overcome off-road, but, judging by the test drive, the 2008 Honda Pilot copes well with obstacles of medium difficulty. 
The 2nd generation Honda Pilot cannot be called maneuverable due to its high weight, and yet in 2008-2011 the crossover was not inferior to its competitors in terms of cornering agility. On the contrary, the car demonstrates high technical capabilities in severe weather and road conditions (overcoming medium-sized potholes).
Fuel consumption
The concern equipped the car with a branded J35Z4 engine (a modified unit based on the J35A1 installation - a 1999 development). The manufacturer has also introduced power plant a unique system that, if necessary (depending on road conditions and in order to save fuel), can turn off either 3 or 2 cylinders. This is really one of the unique developments of the concern that existed on the market at the time of the release of the second generation Pilot. Thanks to her, the owner of a Japanese crossover in 2008 can save on fuel consumption: 11.8 l / 100 km with a combined cycle (up to 16.3 in the city).
Chassis
The suspension is suitable for long journeys, however, as the years of operation of the crossover in Russian reality have shown, the rear struts “give up” already for 70 thousand km, the front ones are enough for 140 thousand. Replacements were also required for expensive hydraulic supports that fail every 150 thousand km .
Honda Pilot 2008 By the time the Honda Pilot 2010 entered the market, experts and experienced car owners noticed the "constructive miscalculation" of the Honda Pilot developers. The characteristics of 2008 testified to a reduced volume of the lubrication system, therefore, with a run of over 100 thousand km, they failed camshafts. Experts say that this trouble can be avoided by constantly monitoring the oil level. Unfortunately, this problem not eliminated during the restyling in 2011 (Honda Pilot 2012 adopted the shortcomings of its predecessor).
Exterior
8-seater 5-door crossover of the second generation was produced in America and designed as a classic american jeep. In the world market, the crossover was positioned as a full-size, but its dimensions were even higher than the declared class: length - 4.8 m, width - 2, height - 1.85, weight - 2 tons. A flat roof, almost square windows and headlights, rectangular doors visually increased the size of the crossover.
Another characteristic of american cars a feature in the exterior - the car in all trim levels was equipped with regular halogen headlights.
Interior design, car equipment
Attention to the crossover in the Russian market was provided by: a spectacular interior, comfortable travel conditions and technical "stuffing". 
Safety
Experts, talking about the interior of the Honda Pilot 2008, first of all paid attention to the high level of passive safety, the presence of up to 10 airbags, side curtains. Moreover, the developers were able to surprise both experts and motorists with the unusual operation of the security system - two modes allow the protection to work with different strength(according to the severity of the collision). The intelligent system ensures the safety of the front passenger with the help of a side airbag and specialized sensors.
Technical equipment
The "stuffing" varies from configuration to configuration: in the base (LX) - cruise control system, noise reduction, CD player, air conditioning, power windows; in the top versions (EX, EX-L) - climate control, music system, DVD player, system that controls the level of pressure in the wheels, steering wheel position control, heated seats, navigation, panoramic sunroof. 
The control panel is designed in corporate style Japanese concern: on the chopped console there is a monochrome display (color 8-inch multimedia in the top version), audio control buttons, climate control. The salon is decorated in a conservative style, high-quality eco-leather is used as finishing materials.
Comfort
In the massive 2008 Honda Pilot crossover, passengers and the driver feel comfortable, because they are not constrained in their movements: there is enough space for everyone to sit in a chair in a reclining position. True, sitting on the third row is not so comfortable: not three passengers are freely accommodated here, but only two.
The seats of the 2nd and 3rd rows are removed (the third "to the floor", the second - in a ratio of 60 to 40), increasing the space in the trunk: 510 liters will intervene in it in the standard position of the seats, up to 2.5 thousand liters - with the seats folded two rows.
The driver and passengers have cup holders at hand, there are many drawers, pockets for small things and documents. 
After restyling
After restyling, the 2012-2015 Honda Pilot was equipped with an engine of the same J35Z4 brand (volume 3.5 liters, power 249 hp). Fuel consumption decreased slightly - to 11.6 liters in the combined cycle (up to 15.8 liters in the city). 
During the restyling, the manufacturer changed the technical specifications in the 2011 Honda Pilot, and also took into account the opinion of the public about the exterior. The developers have introduced a new design front bumper, radiator grille and rims. The front and rear optics have slightly changed in the car. Unfortunately, adherents of the brand noted that after the update, the body flaws did not go away - thin and easily scratched paintwork and chrome coating, fogging rear lights, quickly becoming cloudy front ones. The size of the disks remained the same - R17. 
But there were also negative changes: the clearance decreased to 200.
Three modifications of the Honda Pilot 2012 appeared on the Russian market, the characteristics corresponded to the prices:
- rich basic version (climate control, electronic security and assistance systems in motion, on-board computer, electric drive and heated side mirrors, heated rear, heated front and rear seats, it is possible to install a radio),
- top-end (equipped with a rear-view camera, a sunroof that opens at the touch of a button, a driver's seat with a "memory" settings function).
Available configurations and prices
On the official website of the manufacturer (in the zone.ru) and at car dealers, the configurations and prices of the third generation Honda Pilot are presented. But you can still buy Honda crossover Pilot II. In private ads, there are all three configurations that appeared on the market along with the Honda Pilot 2009: basic Elegance, Executive (leather interior, electric seat adjustment, rear view camera, parking sensors, roof rails), top Executive Navi (multimedia with color 8- mi inch display, navigation, audio system, 9 speakers). 
Prices are set by the owners depending on the year of manufacture, configuration and technical condition, vary within the following limits:
- 2008 release, basic equipment - 650-850 thousand rubles, average - 820-945 thousand, full - 1.05-1.1 million;
- 2009-2010 onwards – from 800 thousand ( good condition, basic equipment);
- Honda Pilot 2011, after restyling - 1.15 million (basic version) or 1.18-1.48 million (maximum equipment, excellent condition);
- Honda Pilot 2012 (specs: Gas engine, 249 hp, 3l) - 1.28-1.55 million (in the maximum configuration - from 1.35 million);
- 2013 and 2014 onwards - 1.17-1.65 million
Main competitors
At one time, experts reviewed the 2008 Honda Pilot and compared the "Japanese" with crossovers from leading manufacturers. Already the first representative of the new generation embodied competitive qualities, thanks to which, according to numerous users, the following popular crossovers turned out to be equal for the “Japanese”:
- Mazda CX-9 (inferior in running gear, but "levels the score" with a stylish exterior),
- (built on the same base as the Pilot, differs only in the "stuffing" and the shape of the body),
- Toyota Venza and Volkswagen Touareg(based on average scores for key indicators).
Honda Pilot could well compete with similar modifications of popular models.
The latest version in the second generation - Honda Pilot 2014 - can not be compared with the third generation crossover. The improved “Japanese” is quite capable of competing with such leaders in the business crossover segment as (bestseller), Lexus RX (popular in Europe) and Volvo XC90 (famous for Swiss quality):
Distinctive features of the model
It is possible to identify several distinctive features models.
- Classic exterior (in line with American engineering trends of the time), impressive size.
- The maximum equipment of the basic configuration (thought-out practicality in the cabin, cozy adjustable seat driver, driver assistance systems);
- Security systems that outperform the competition. The developers of the concert have introduced a set of innovative solutions into the second-generation crossover to improve the overall level of safety, both passive and active. In addition to the maximum equipment basic version(active headrests, side curtains, up to 10 airbags and electronic security systems), the car features a two-stage airbag deployment mode. Pillows open with different force depending on the severity of the collision (a signal about the strength of the impact is given by special sensors). This intelligent system in 2008 did not leave indifferent neither motorists nor experts.
- Really roomy interior. Pilot is the only full-size 8-seater crossover at the time of the release of the second generation. - Honda Pilot 2008 in terms of technical characteristics, if inferior to its main rivals, was slightly, and in some ways even superior to most similar modifications: high power, maneuverability, reliable motor, excellent cross-country ability (under road conditions of medium difficulty), smart system all-wheel drive (connected when towing and starting, the rest of the time front-wheel drive is involved).
- Economical operation (based on fuel consumption, tax, maintenance costs and current minor repairs). Subject to care recommendations, it can serve for three years or more without serious failures (does not require overhaul). And it will not be difficult to replace failed, inexpensive spare parts (available in many auto parts stores, in automotive markets, in extreme cases, you can install an inexpensive analogue).
Cons/problems
Experts attribute the main problems to the rapidly declining oil level, which must be constantly monitored. There is no corresponding sensor in the cabin (it did not appear even after the upgrade, in Honda versions Pilot 2011). To monitor the situation, non-technically savvy car owners will have to regularly contact the service center. 
The chassis is easy to "use" if you forget that you are still dealing not with an SUV, but with a crossover. The stabilizer bushings are broken on the "harsh" Russian roads more often than you would like.
Among other, less significant disadvantages, the owners name:
- insufficient soundproofing of the cabin;
- every 80 thousand km you have to change the spark plugs (although 105 are declared);
- the snowplow zone is not heated;
- no usb connector
- ground clearance is too small for a full-size crossover;
- LCP is easily damaged.
Buying a second-generation Japanese crossover today is worth it only from responsible car owners who have taken care of the car properly. As an alternative, you can consider a "Japanese" no older than 7 years, it is advisable to buy a Honda Pilot 2014 (at least 2012 onwards).
