Typically, a car would start the race with 44 gallons of fuel and over nine liters of oil. Although the likes of Moss and Jenkinson raced in the 1955 Mille Miglia, they started the race with 70 liters of fuel in the tank.
In 1955, at Le Mans, 300 SLRs were equipped with so-called "air brakes". It's like what they use on airplanes. It's like a big hood behind the car. It slowed the car down at the end of the long straights. It looked like this 
The idea came from motorsports director Alfred Neubauer. He was looking for a system that would help save drum brakes and tires from wear and tear on such long distances as Le Mans or Reims.
Neubauer (Neubauer) realized that air resistance would help slow down the car, especially at Le Mans.
