From the history

The model was developed as a replacement for the "penny" - VAZ 2101, began to be produced in 1980, belongs to the "second generation" of VAZ rear-wheel drive cars. VAZ-2105 appeared as a result of a major modernization of previously produced models. On the basis of the 2105 model, the VAZ-2107 sedan and the VAZ-2104 station wagon were later developed.

VAZ-2105 is the base model of a deeply modernized family, which includes the 2104 station wagon and the 2107 "luxury" sedan.

The VAZ-2105 model, in its design, almost corresponded to the European fashion of the early 1980s. This allowed the model to be sold in a number of European countries for many more years. Although in Europe such rear-wheel drive four-door five-seater sedans began to lose ground to front-wheel drive models already in the 70s. From the moment of its appearance (and even more so now), this classic sedan has not become prestigious for many car owners and, accordingly, has not become AvtoVAZ's most mass-produced product. This did not prevent him from being considered the most progressive design until the advent of front-wheel drive VAZs.

Cars of the family are distinguished by angular outlines of the wings, rectangular headlights, and more functional bumpers. In the cabin, a modernized instrument panel, in which a voltmeter appeared. The ventilation system differs from the previous ones by the presence of rectangular deflectors. Heated rear window is standard. The fuse and relay box is located in the engine compartment. The salon has undergone significant changes: a new instrument panel, new seats and door trim. From the beginning of production, the VAZ 2105 was equipped with carburetor engines with a working volume of 1.3 liters and a power of 64 hp. Subsequently, they were replaced by compact type 2105. The engines were constantly upgraded. Later, a modification of the VAZ-21053 with a VAZ-2103 engine with a power of 72 hp was mastered. (according to the new GOST). For a long time, the VAZ-21051 was modified with a 1.2-liter VAZ-2101 engine with a capacity of 64 hp. (according to the old GOST).

From 1982 to 1984, together with rocker arms made of 40X steel, the camshafts were nitrided instead of HDTV hardened to increase wear resistance, which provided increased corrosion resistance, wear resistance and high resistance to alternating loads. Since 1985, camshafts with cam whitening have been installed. These shafts have a hex belt between the third and fourth cams. From the same year, 45-liter fuel tanks for AI-93 gasoline without drain plugs were mounted on models instead of 39-liter gas tanks with drain plugs.

Type 2105 carburetors with a forced idle economizer (EPKhH), which allows engine braking to reduce carbon monoxide emissions (the notorious CO) and reduces fuel consumption, were mounted on engines until 1985. Then they began to install simpler carburetors of the 21051 type, which until 1987 were equipped with an econostat. Since 1986, instead of the ST-221 starter, a type 35.3708 starter and an additional ignition relay have been installed. The cooling system has also changed. So, since 1988, on the "fives" (the informal name of the VAZ-2105 and modifications in the driver's environment), radiators with aluminum cores made of two rows of horizontal aluminum tubes of circular cross section and cooling plates were installed. On sedans, in addition to four-speed gearboxes, since 1985, unified five-speed VAZ-2112 type, and later VAZ-21074 type, designed on their basis, have been mounted. With the curtailment of the production of low-power 1.2- and 1.3-liter engine models at AvtoVAZ, only the most powerful 1.5-liter modification of the VAZ-21053 remained in production, the configuration of which can differ significantly in interior trim (from leatherette to velor), etc. In addition It should be noted that VAZ 21054 cars are produced in small batches on special orders of the traffic police, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the FSB and other special services, which are additionally equipped with a second gas tank and a second battery.
