Unusual Buryat names and their meaning. Buryat names Beautiful Buryat names for a boy are modern

Names borrowed from the Tibetan and Sanskrit languages, for more than three hundred years, have become so firmly and organically included in the lexical composition of the Buryat language that they are no longer perceived as foreign and are perceived as Buryat proper.

Until 1936, the composition of Buryat names was represented by traditional Tibetan and Sanskrit ones. For example, most residents of the older generation have complex or dual names: Garmazhap "protected by a star", Dansaran-Geleg "saint, sage, happiness", Dashi-Dorzho "lucky diamond", Dimid-Tsyren "Buddha's epithet", Dashi-Dondog "creating happiness”, Tsyren-Zhalma “an epithet of the goddess Uma”, which indicates the influence of religious beliefs. It should be noted that, due to grammatical traditions, there was no such phenomenon as an indicator of gender between names. The names Buda-Khanda, Tsybik-Dorzho, Radna were called both girls and boys.

1936-1940 characterized as a time of repression, the destruction of churches and datsans, persecution of the ministers of religion. During this period, the first native Buryat names appear: Bato-Zhargal "strong happiness", Zorigto "brave, brave", Sesegma "flower".

It should be noted that there are also color names, although isolated cases are presented: Ulaan-Tuyaa "red ray", Ulaan Seseg "red flower", Ulaan Baatar "red hero".

Meanwhile, the most frequent are the names of Tibetan origin: Baljid, Danzan, Dasha-Nima, Dulma, Tsybik-Dorzho, Tsyrelma, Tsyren-Khanda, etc.

Period from 1946 to 1970 characterized by an abundance of double names borrowed from the Tibetan and Sanskrit languages: Badma-zhap "protected by a lotus", Radnazhap "precious refuge", Tsyden-Damba "holy, strong life", Genin-Dorzho "diamond friend", Tsyren-Khanda "walking along heaven, long life,” etc.

The names of the Atsagat people are also replenished with the Buryat names Bator "hero", Bato "strong, strong", Bayarma "joy", Erdem "knowledge", Tuyana "beam", Erzhen "mother of pearl", Erdeni "jewel", Bulad "steel", Tumen " ten thousand". A large number of names appear on a Slavonic basis, when choosing which, first of all, they paid attention to the euphony and ease of pronunciation.

The appearance of foreign names among the Buryats testifies to following the fashion. In the 60-70s, there was a fascination with Western European fashion and names. This trend testifies to the active familiarization of the Buryats not only with the culture of the Russian, but also of other peoples.

The last decade of the last century was marked by major social transformations, a return to traditional spiritual values and the conversion of the Buryats to their original Buryat names. It can be noted that a peculiar tradition of naming has developed: the head of the family asks the lama to determine the name of the child, who determines the most favorable and suitable name from the stars.

Names appear, emphasizing the difference in sex, defining the category of the genus. There is a suffix way of forming names (-a; -maa;): Balzhid - Balzhida, Suren - Surena, Selmeg - Selmega. There is a new model of education from male and female names that have finals in consonant sounds. But still, the model with the Tibetan element -maa remains productive: Bair - Bairma, Zhargal - Zhargalma, Soel - Soelma.

It seems that the names of Adis from adis “blessing”, Amarsana from the greeting amar sayn “well-intentioned”, as well as the name of the national hero of western Mongolia, Altan from altan “gold”, Saran from saran “moon”, Bair, Dulsan "liberator, immortal." These names are formed by adding the derivational suffix -a to the stem, as an indicator of a female name.

For each nation, a rather important feature is the magical function of the name, which affects the fate of the betrothed. For example, Buddhists claim that the bearer of the name Geser, an epic hero of remarkable power of divine origin, possessed powerful energy, which was transferred to his name. The name Geser can be worn by a physically and spiritually strong person, therefore this name is characterized as “heavy”, and parents rarely call their children by that name. Among the Buryats, there are quite a lot of people with two names, for example, Geser and Zhambal, Bayaskhalan and Shoizhonima, Darima and Dolgorma, where the first is the official names that did not fit the subject for one reason or another and they were called differently. Therefore, choosing a name is an extremely responsible and important step for a person. Thus, lamas do not advise giving children the names of early deceased or dead relatives.

Thus, the Buryat name list has been formed since the penetration of Buddhism into Russia and has undergone few changes since then. Basically, these are borrowings from the Tibetan-Sanskrit language. Actually Buryat names appeared in the 30s, and currently occupy a leading position.

I'm ready to help you, - said the hunter.
“Then let’s go to the valley where the battle will be,” said the motley-winged serpent.
They came to a wide valley.
“Our battle will be long,” said the variegated serpent. We will ascend to the sky three times and descend to the earth three times. When we rise for the fourth time, my enemy will overcome me, take over; when we go down, he will be at the top and I will be at the bottom. At this time, do not yawn: I will turn his yellow head towards you, and you shoot in his only eye. This eye is in his forehead, in the very middle of his forehead. Now hide in this hole, soon the yellow-winged serpent will rush from the sky right at me.
The hunter hid in a hole.
Soon, a yellow-winged serpent rushed from the sky. The battle has begun. The snakes, having grappled, rose three times to the sky, three times fell to the ground. The forces were equal. But now they rose to the sky for the fourth time, and the yellow-winged serpent overcame the motley-winged one. When they descended, the yellow-winged one was above and the variegated-winged one was below. But the motley-winged one quickly turned the head of his enemy to the hunter. The sharpshooter was just waiting for that. The string of his bow was drawn. A moment was enough for him to shoot an arrow and pierce the yellow eye of a yellow-winged serpent. And then a yellow poisonous fog fell on the ground, from which all the trees in the forest withered, and all the animals died. The hunter was saved by a variegated serpent. He covered his friend with mighty dense wings and kept him under them for three days and three nights until the yellow poisonous fog dissipated.
And when the sun shone again, the variegated serpent said:
We have defeated a formidable enemy. Thank you hunter. The yellow-winged serpent did a lot of harm. Every day he swallowed three beasts and devoured the fiery serpents, my subjects. If not for you, he would have killed me and devoured all the fire kites. Come visit me. You will see my palace, my subjects, my old parents.
The hunter agreed, and he and the serpent descended into a deep pit, and from there through an underground passage they got into a palace sparkling with gold and precious stones. On the floor lay fiery serpents coiled into coils. One room was followed by another, even richer. And so they came to the largest hall. In it, near the hearth, sat two old multi-winged snakes.
“These are my parents,” said the serpent. The hunter greeted them.
- This hunter saved me and all my khanate, - said the serpent. - He killed our old enemy.
"Thank you," said the snake's old parents. - You will be rewarded for this. If you want, we will give you gold and precious stones, as much as you can carry. If you want, we will teach seven ten languages, so that you can understand the conversations of birds, animals and fish. Choose!
“Teach me seventy languages,” said the hunter.
- Take better gold and jewelry, - said the old parents of the snake. - For someone who knows seventy languages, life is not easy.
“No, I don’t want gold, teach me languages,” the hunter asked.
"Well, have it your way," said the old motley-winged serpent. - From now on you know seventy languages, from now on you hear the conversations of birds, fish and animals. But this is a secret. You must keep it from people. If you let it slip, you will die the same day.
The hunter left the Spotted Serpent Khanate and went home. He walks through the forest and rejoices: after all, he understands everything that animals and birds say among themselves. The hunter came out of the forest. Here is the yurt. "I'll go into it," he thinks. And the dog barks:
- Don't come in here. Although it is a rich yurt, our owner is mean. Here you will not only meat - they will not give you milk.
The hunter moved on. Near another yurt, a dog barks:
- Come here, traveler. Although this is a poor man's yurt, but our host is kind, he will treat you. We have only one cow, but the owner will give you milk, we have only one black ram, but the owner pays the last ram for the guest.
The hunter entered the poor man's yurt. The owner politely greeted him, seated him in a place of honor. The host's wife served the guest a bowl of milk. The poor man invited the hunter to spend the night, and in the evening killed a black ram for him. As they ate, the dog whined:
- Good guest, drop the mutton shoulder, I will grab it and run out, the owner will not be angry with you.
The hunter dropped his shovel. The dog grabbed her and ran away. And then she barked:
- A kind guest treated me to a delicious spatula. I will not sleep all night, I will guard the yurt.
The wolves came at night. They stopped near the poor man's yurt and howled:
- Now we'll pull the horse!
- My master has only one horse, you can't eat it. If you come closer, I will raise a loud bark. The owner will wake up, his guest-hunter will wake up, and then you will be unhappy. Better go there, to the rich man, bully his fat gray mare, he has many horses, and his dogs are hungry, they will not want to bark at you.

The Buryat language belongs to the northern group of Mongolian languages.

In view of the absence of written monuments of the early period of the history of the Buryats, it is difficult to speak with sufficient certainty about the ancient onomastics of the Buryats, about the origin of the Buryat names. However, the names of ancestors have been preserved in people's memory since ancient times. Even at the present time there are people who call the names of their ancestors up to the twenty-fifth generation in the male line. In addition, in the rich oral folk art of the Buryats we find the proper names of people of bygone times.

The Buryats in the early period of their history and later had close ties with the Tungus-Manchurian, Turkic and other tribes and peoples of Central Asia. This circumstance gives reason to think that the names of the type Nakhi, Zonhi, Toodoi, Buydar, Tukhan, Malo etc., which are difficult to explain on the basis of the Buryat and other Mongolian languages, are of foreign origin.

On the other hand, undoubtedly, in ancient times, naming according to the characteristic feature of a person was widely practiced, that is, words with a common noun were often used as personal names. Names taken from pastoral and other terminology were also assigned. For example, in family trees there are names: Sagaan"white", Turgen"fast", Borsoy(from the basis of borso- "to be plain, shriveled"), Tabgay"paw", "foot"; in uligers (epics) there are names-metaphors: Altan Shagay"golden ankle" Altan Khaisha"gold scissors" Shuhan Zurhen"Bloody Heart" Nara Luugaa"Sun", Sara Luugaa"Moon", as well as names like Sagaadai(from the stem sagaan "white"), nogooday(from the base nogoon "green"), She6sheedey(from stem shebshe - "to think"), Haraldai(from stem hara "black").

A large layer of Buryat personal names was associated with superstitions. Names like Nohoy"dog", Shono"wolf", Azarga"stallion", Buha"bull", Tehe"goat", Husa"ram" were given to children to frighten evil spirits, and such names as Arkhinsha"drunkard", Baahan"cal", Angaadha"razinya" - so that the evil spirits do not pay attention to the child.

One can speak more definitely about Buryat names starting from the end of the 17th century. With the penetration of Lamaism into Buryatia at the end of the 17th and at the beginning of the 18th centuries. foreign-language names, as a rule, of Tibetan and Sanskrit origin began to intensively penetrate into the Trans-Baikal Buryats. Somewhat later, these names began to penetrate to the pre-Baikal Buryats, especially to Alar, where Lamaism had a stronger influence than in other departments of the former Irkutsk province inhabited by Buryats. Tibetan in origin are such names as Galsan"happiness", Dam"higher", Yeshi"intelligence", Dorzho"diamond", Sambuu"good", Baldan"powerful", Sodnam"good deed" Rinchin"jewel", Danzan"pillar of religion" Dulma"savior mother" Handa"virgin savior" and many others.

The names of Sanskrit origin, which penetrated to the Buryats through the Tibetan language, include: Bazaar"diamond", Buda or Bude, Garma"consequence" Aryaa"saint", Zana"mind", etc.

Along with the above names of Tibetan and Sanskrit origin, the Eastern Buryats continued to have original names, for example: Bata"strong", "durable" Baatar"bogatyr" Gerel"light" , Olzo"find", Accordion"rich", etc.

Among the pre-Baikal Buryats, after the annexation of Buryatia to the Russian state, personal names from the Christian calendar became widespread, for example: Nicholas, Vasily. Mikhail, Alexander, Pavel, Peter, Roman. Borrowed directly from the Russian language, the names before the revolution were subjected to strong phonetic changes. For example, the name Roman in Buryat was pronounced Armaan, Athanasius - Hunaasha, Innocent - Naseente, Basil - Bashiila, Bashley etc.

Among the names borrowed from the Russian language, there are Russian and foreign surnames. For example, the Russian surname Petrov turned into a Buryat name Pitroob, Lensky - in Leenshe, Darwin - in Daarbin.

Modern Buryat names differ significantly from ancient and pre-revolutionary names.

The names of Ti6etsko-Sanskrit origin, associated with the Buddhist religion, are gradually beginning to move into the passive. stock. Complex double names like Tseren-Dorzho, Dugar-Toad, Tseden-Yeshe and others. Now, when choosing names for newborns, they began to rely on Russian or foreign names, perceived through the Russian language, on the names of prominent people. At the same time, Russian names in connection

with the spread among the Buryats, bilingualism is no longer subject to strong phonetic modification according to the laws of the Buryat language.

Along with Russian names, the original Buryat names, which are common nouns with a positive meaning, as well as the most sonorous names of Tibetan-Sanskrit origin, are now widely used: bayar"joy", Zhargal"happiness", Sesag"flower", Dariima, Medegmaa, Dugar etc.

Due to the absence of the category of grammatical gender in the Buryat language, Buryat personal names do not have any grammatical differences, but they have a correlation with a certain gender, i.e. male and female names are distinguished. True, there is a group of names of Tibetan origin that have formal grammatical indicators denoting the female gender - maa. -suu: Madegmaa, Gelegmaa, Darisuu, Badmasuu. In addition, recently, under the influence of the Russian language, some Buryat female names began to take shape (primarily in their Russian spelling) with the final indicator -a: Chimit-Chimita, Tuyan-Tuyana, Rygzen-Rygzena etc.

Previously, out of superstitious motives, some Buryats assigned female names to newborn boys. In particular, when there were no sons in the family for a long time, the newborn was given a female name, or, conversely, a male name when there were no girls. Now it's gone.

The list of Buryat names includes the most common personal names of both Transbaikal and pre-Baikal Buryats. Russian and foreign names common among the Buryats are not included in the list.

It should be noted that only official names are given in the list, along with which everyday and nickname names were quite common among the Buryats. In view of this, many Buryats then bore two names. At present, nicknames and household names have ceased to be given. But on the other hand, some Buryats who have original Buryat or names borrowed from Eastern languages have unofficial Russian names.

Since Buryat records are currently conducted in Russian, in official documents the names and surnames of the Buryats are usually given in Russian design: Dorji(Buryat Dorzho), Tsyden(Buryat Tseden), etc. As for the Buryat spellings (in the list - the first column), they should basically be recommended for use in works of art. At the same time, the Buryat spellings are drawn up in accordance with the Buryat spelling. In particular, complex (or compound) names are written in accordance with paragraph 61 of the new set of "Rules of Buryat Orthography", which says: "If Buryat names, patronymics and surnames, as well as geographical names consist of two words, then they are written through a hyphen with capital letters: Baldan-Dorzho, Dugar-Zhab...".

There are 13 deviations from the Buryat spelling when the name ends in a diphthong - uy. For example, the word Algui spelling should have been Algy, but since no one pronounces it that way, it is formatted as Algui. In addition, there is a discrepancy in the spelling of the same name, due to dialectal features. In one case, the letters s, w, vowels OU, in others, respectively - c, h And at: Shagdar And Chagdar, Seren And Tseren, Dolgor And Dulgar, Buda And Bude, Punsag And Punzag, Udbel And Udbal. Each variant of such a name is given in its place according to the alphabet.

The Russian spelling of Buryat names and surnames is drawn up in accordance with the laws and rules of the Russian language:

a) Compound names are written together. In Buryat: Dari - Toad, in Russian: Darizhap.

b) Longitude is transmitted by stressed vowels: Babuu - Babu.

c) Final short vowels a, uh two-syllable names are transmitted by letter O, except for names with y, and in the first syllable. in Buryat - Bata, in Russian - Bato, Sada - Sado. Two-syllable names with y, and in the first syllable, as well as polysyllabic

names in final position retain the short vowel: Buda Buda, Bimba Bimba, Aranza

aranza.

d) In position before the final consonant, short vowels a, uh transmitted through a, s, y, e, and: Baldan - Baldan; Gunsen - Gunsyn; Udbel - Udbyl; Tudep-Tudup; Shagdar-Shagdar, Shagdir, Shagdur; Regzen-Rygzen; Tsebeg-Tsybik.

e) In the first syllable, vowels are mostly preserved, but in some words uh is replaced by s, and: Gepelmaa - Gypylma, Shere - Shira. In the middle syllable, the short vowel is also sometimes replaced by s, e: Gepelmaa - Gypylma, Tseremzhed - Tsyremzhit.

f) After hissing is written And instead of A, uh oh: Dasha - Dashi, Babzha - Babzhi, Oshor -Ochir.

g) Voiced consonants before deaf and at the end of words are replaced by the corresponding deaf ones: Sogto-Tsokto, Oidob-Oidop.

h) Instead w, s sometimes (according to tradition) it is written h, c: Oshor-Ochur, Sagaan-Tsagan.

Deviations from the rules of the Russian design of Buryat names adopted above are due to the tradition of writing certain words or sometimes dialectal differences in the Buryat language:

a) In front of the deaf, a letter denoting a voiced sound is sometimes preserved: Rabsal-Ra6sal, Lubsan - Lubsan.

b) Final short vowels are sometimes transmitted through - uy: Ashata-Achituy(but not Achito).

Buryat surnames and patronymics are not given in the list. Before the revolution, baptized Buryats and Cossacks had a surname in the Russian sense of the word.1 The rest of the Buryats took the name of their father as a surname. Currently, the surname is formed from its own name by adding the suffix - ov (-ev): Tsyren - Tsyrenov, Buda-Budaev. At the same time, the final short vowels of the name, in accordance with the old Mongolian design, are replaced by at or oh ah vowels preceding the final consonant retain their Russian design: Abido - Abiduev, Bato - Batuev and Batoev; Shagdar-Shagdarov, Shagdyrov, Shagdurov or Chigdurov.

Surnames can also be formed using suffixes -on, -e, -o, -in, -ay: Migidon, Simpilan; Badmazhabe, Budzhabe; Baldano, Rinchino; Badmain, Ayurzanain; Batozhabai. However, this method is less common. All of the above suffixes (except -ay) are indicators of the genitive case in Old Mongolian, ah- an indicator of the genitive case of the modern Buryat language.

The tradition of using the father's name as the son's surname persists in some places today. As a result, some Buryats have the same patronymic and surname: Badmaev Vladimir Badmaevich. Many in order to avoid coincidences in quality

formal patronymics take the name of their paternal grandfather. Some Buryats do not have patronymics at all.

However, among the Buryats, the design of surnames and patronymics according to the Russian model is now increasingly becoming a tradition, when a son or daughter bears the father's surname, and the patronymic is drawn up by the father's name: Dampilov Damdin Sodnomovich, Tsydenova

Darima Dugarovna etc.

The Buryats live from the beginning. These are representatives of the Mongolian race, representing one of the strongholds of traditional Buddhist and shamanic culture in our state. This is very clearly reflected in the traditional Buryat names, which we will talk about in the article.

About Buryat names

Let's start with the fact that the traditional onomasticon of the Buryats experienced a very strong influence of the Tibetan, and through the Tibetan and Indian cultures. This happened more than three hundred years ago, thanks to the preaching of Buddhism. That is why the Buryat names contain in their list a huge variety of Sanskrit and Tibetan forms and roots. However, they have come into use so organically that today they are not perceived as foreign languages.

Traditional Buryat names are most often complex, consisting of two roots. At the same time, they have a very, very strong religious significance. In addition, many of them do not differ in gender - this feature began to penetrate more and more into the onomasticon of the Buryats under the influence of Russification. Traditionally, many Buryat names were equally suitable for both girls and boys.

Over time, foreign-language names began to prevail, and only during the years of Soviet power, when religious persecution began, did ancient Buryat names begin to come to the fore, which did not have a vivid religious significance. Most often they are associated with plants (for example, Sesegma - "flower") or abstract qualities, concepts (Zhargal - "happiness"). Occasionally, names are associated with colors and shades (for example, Ulaan Baatar - "red hero"). Another feature of this onomasticon is that the Buryats, especially in the past, had a popular tradition of giving a person a double name.

Further Russification led to the fact that many of the original forms acquired a Slavic sound. This process is especially typical for the second half of the last century. At present, Buryats mainly use original Buryat female names, as well as original male names. However, both of them are now divided by gender, are most often monosyllabic and often have a Russified form of pronunciation.

The percentage of Tibetan and Sanskrit names, although an order of magnitude less, is still quite high among the Buryat population. Especially in recent years, as more people turn to their cultural and religious traditions, the Buddhist influence on the onomasticon is starting to increase. Many parents do not even choose a name themselves, but apply for a name to a clergyman - a lama, who determines the child's name based on certain astrological premises.

Below we give a list of some Buryat names. It will contain both the Buryat names of boys and the names of girls. Of course, this is not a complete list, a simple enumeration of which without explanation would take an entire book. We will limit ourselves to the most beautiful and colorful forms.

The list of Buryat male names is very diverse and consists of three groups: primordially national, religious (Tibetan and Sanskrit), and names borrowed from other peoples and cultures.

Traditional Buryat male names and their meanings come from the ancient names of ancestors, which have common Mongolian roots. They partially characterize their owner, indicate distinctive external features, character traits, occupation (Darkhan - "blacksmith", Turgen - "fast", Tabgay - "clubfoot"). When choosing a name for a boy, the Buryats paid great attention to its meaning. The name was invested with the wish of a good character, a happy fate, wealth, good luck, or the right choice of one's own destiny: Mergen - "a sharp shooter", Bayan - "rich", Nomgon - "calm, meek".

The original Buryat names for boys also include a group of amulets designed to deceive evil forces. These are adverbs with a repulsive, pejorative meaning or derived from the names of animals (Tehe - "goat", Angaadha - "razin"). They are now almost completely obsolete.

By the beginning of the 18th century, the Buryats adopted Buddhism. The list of Buryat names for boys is enriched with many Tibetan and Sanskrit names that carry the philosophy of Buddhism-Lamaism: the awakening of spiritual consciousness, the cessation of suffering with the help of self-control and meditation, the achievement of absolute peace - nirvana. One way or another, these names had a religious meaning: for example, the Sanskrit Ayurzana - "wisdom of life", Ubashi - "a monk who swore an oath", Tibetan Baldanzhab - "protected by glory". Among the cult names there are many compound Tibeto-Sanskrit variants originating from the base -badma (the name of the sacred lotus flower for Buddhists): Badmagarma - "lotus inflorescence", Badmarinchin - "precious lotus".

In the onomasticon of the Buryats, foreign names have been preserved, which at different times penetrated into the national culture: Arabic and Turkic, Kalmyk, Yakut, Kazakh, Mongolian. Some of them have different meanings for different peoples: for example, the Turkic name Ulan (“son, youth”) in Buryat and Kalmyk means “red”, Ayan is translated from Buryat and Mongolian as “caravan”, from Kazakh - “famous”, from Yakut - "calm". An impressive group of Buryat male names is formed by Russian names - their borrowing began after the annexation of Buryatia to Russia and continues to this day. Some of the Russian names were modified, adapting to the peculiarities of the Buryat language (Innokenty - Naseente, Athanasius - Khunaasha), some are used in the original version. Through the Russian language in the second half of the 20th century, Western European names also came to Buryatia.

Beautiful Buryat male names

Among the beautiful Buryat names for boys, there are many not only primordially national, but also Tibeto-Sanskrit options. Sonorous names are formed from the names of heavenly bodies, precious stones, metals, flowers (Bazaar - "diamond", Altan - "gold", Badma - "lotus", Dabazhab - "protected by the moon"). Popular and rare male names of the Buryats

For many years, beautiful national male names Bayar, Zorikto, Bato, Zhargal, Ardan, Tibetan and Sanskrit Ayusha, Ayur, Dashi-Nima have been popular in Buryatia. Among Russian names, Alexander, Vladimir, Sergey, Valery are the most frequent.
