Where to begin?

When we started to choose a car for the Trans-Russian Ethnographic Expedition "In Love with Russia", first of all, we had to decide on the amount of money we have to buy it. And all the other pros and cons, we considered only in those cars that fit into our budget.

The maximum amount available to us was up to 1,000,000 rubles.

Selection criteria.

After we decided on the amount of money available, we asked ourselves the following 3 questions:

1) Where are we going to go?(approximate route, quality of roads on it, asphalt/off-road ratio, plain/mountains, climate)

2) What is the composition of our crew?(number of people, men, women, children)

3) What is the duration of our trip?(a couple of days, a couple of weeks, a few months).

And the answers were as follows: 1) Traveling in all regions of Russia, including roads of medium and low quality, plains and mountains, from the Arctic Circle to the Black Sea subtropics, asphalt 80%, off-road 20%; 2) Crew of two people, a man and a woman; 3) Duration of the trip - 6 or more months.

Based on these answers, it follows that we need a car with high traffic, with a large usable volume, for storing a large amount of luggage, and capable of withstanding significant loads. That is why, sedans, hatchbacks, station wagons and crossovers did not get into the final top ten, and only full-fledged ones took all the places. large SUVs. All the cars on our list meet the basic requirements of real SUVs, in the classic sense. Few basic requirements:

1) Frame construction. Provides greater strength and durability, reduced body roll, tuning capability, easier repairs and a number of other benefits.

2) Four-wheel drive. Obviously, in difficult road conditions, it is necessary that we are pulled by all 4 wheels.

3) Reduced range of gears. Provides maximum traction in snow, mud, sand, slopes, etc.

There are also other characteristics that are useful for a good off-road vehicle - the presence of blockages, solid bridges, etc., and they are very important for trophy raids and off-road competitions. But for long journeys, they are secondary to those mentioned above.

Comparison of options.

1) UAZ Patriot.

Briefly: I would like to note that the author of this article, by the will of fate, had a chance to leave for 6 years on Great Wall cars, first 3 years on Hover H2, then 3 years on Hover H5. And both of these cars showed themselves from the best side in terms of reliability (1 breakdown (generator) in 6 years and 160,000 km), handling, cross-country ability and comfort. 3) Mitsubishi Pajero Sport II.

But if you think about it, it becomes clear that this car has basic dimensions (length and width) close to full-size SUVs and also has good off-road potential, thanks to the frame structure, two solid axles, hard-wired all-wheel drive, a reduction gear range, standard forced locking in the rear axle and a lot of potential for improvements. At the same time, the internal volume is so large that it allows you to fully live in a car - sleep, eat, work at a computer and solve hygiene issues. Traveling in such a car is already close to traveling in motorhomes, which represents a completely different level of comfort and autonomy. With minor modifications to the design, careful maintenance and availability of spare parts, this car is suitable for long trips.

Many good cars were not included in our shortlist:

UAZ Hunter and Loaf - due to low reliability and a complete lack of comfort.

Hummer and all Jeep models - because of the high cost of the cars themselves and the difficulty in finding spare parts in the regions.

Mercedes G-class - due to the extremely high cost of the car and spare parts.

All models Land Rover due to unreliability and high cost.

Toyota Fj Cruiser, Fortuner, 4runner, Hilux Surf - due to the fact that they are quite rare in Russia, due to the high cost of cars and problems with finding spare parts.

All pickups - because for us, one of the important criteria was the ability to move around the cabin without leaving the car.

We make a choice.

After studying all the options, we once again remembered the answers to the most important questions - "Where are we going? In what composition? For how long?" They also asked themselves additional questions - "Do we want to sleep in the car or out of it? Where will we cook and eat in dry / rainy weather? How will hygiene be organized? What is included in the list of luggage that we will take with us?" etc.

And besides, we tried to figure out what is more important to us and what is less. In other words, we set our own priorities. So, for example, for us, a large interior space turned out to be more important than the speed of the car. Simplicity, low cost and maintainability of the design were more important to us than smooth running, noise insulation and a large number of auxiliary electronic systems. Good off-road ability, we put on our priority list above the agility on the track. And so on. It is possible that your views are radically different from ours, and in this case, your final choice will be completely different.

And already with the understanding of all the above features, we moved on to screening out options that are less suitable for us.

All the least were eliminated first big cars- Hover, MPS, Rexton and Prado. Although there are only two of us, our journey should last several months, which means that we will have to take with us a very significant amount of luggage that simply will not fit into the above cars.

The next step was to cross out Explorer and Tahoe, as too uneconomical and not having sufficient cross-country ability.

TLK100, Patrol, Patriot and Sobol advanced to the semifinals. With all the love of your humble servant for Land Cruisers and Patrols, after a long study of the market, a strong-willed decision was made to delete these models from consideration as well. There were no such cars among my acquaintances, and, not having enough experience, taking a 15-year-old SUV from strangers (no matter how reliable it was initially), with a mileage of more than 250,000 km, seemed not a very reliable idea.

And the final choice between Patriot and Sable was not difficult to make. With the same unreliability (compared to Japanese SUVs), poor build quality and paintwork, poor sound insulation, low comfort level and other shortcomings of both, Sable had several advantages. First, diesel Cummins engine 2.8l, which, although not the best engine in the world, but still surpasses the UMP and ZMZ engines currently installed on GAZ and UAZ. The second is Eaton's regular electronic wheel lock Elocker, which significantly increases the cross-country ability. And third, it is the most important thing - GIANT, by the standards of cars and even SUVs, internal volume! In this space, it is possible to equip a sleeping and kitchen area, a place to work, a luggage compartment and even a combined shower and toilet!
