Minivans, which not so long ago were considered almost hopelessly illiquid, have not stagnated on the market in the past few years.
If new cars of this class are often purchased by organizations, then used minivans are bought mainly by private individuals. Those who need the only car in the family - the most comfortable and roomy, if not for everything, then for most occasions.
Of course, not everyone needs a minivan, but when there are two children in the family and you often go to the country, you should already pay attention to such a car. Yes, at first it is difficult for many to imagine being the owner of a “bus”. To break the psychological barrier, you need to go to the car market with the whole family, and be sure to ride along with the household in a minivan - the association with the bus will be removed as if by hand.
A minivan takes up no more space on the road than a middle-class passenger car. In other words, a sedan compared to a minivan is a “room” of the same area, but with sloping walls, a low ceiling and a “pantry”-trunk with a separate entrance. The minivan shows a more prudent attitude to space. High rise allows you to see better traffic situation ahead and leave the stalled row in time. When you get out into the operational space, you will find that the minivan is controlled almost like an ordinary passenger car. And only in a tight parking lot at first you will be careful not to feel the long “nose” of the car - however, with a certain training, this will cease to be an inconvenience for you.
Renault Espace 1996-2000 V.
In November 1996, the third generation Renault Espace debuted. The car has little in common with the previous family. Salon - an amazing mixture of avant-garde and practicality. Seats with a seating formula 2 + 3 + 2, as in the previous generation, are moderately hard, anatomical, with recesses for the knees in the backs. Only they are not attached at fixed points, but on rails that allow you to change the layout of the cabin.
Transformability of the cabin is one of the most important characteristics for all minivans, but in this case we can talk about truly supernatural flexibility - in total there are 352 seating options on this model. In addition, thanks to the "rail" mount, landing on the rear seats has become much easier - the middle row can be moved forward.
In the widest range, the volume of the trunk varies - from 275 to 2850 liters with a carrying capacity of up to 750 kg.
In 1997, a long wheelbase version called the Grand Espace entered the market. Externally, the car was changed slightly. Its base is 170 mm longer than usual. The rear overhang grew by 275 mm, the length - 4787 mm - the car practically became comparable with the light flagship of the company - Safrane. The main result of "pulling" the minivan is an impressive trunk: from 520 to 3100 liters.
The Espace's suspension is even better than some of today's European passenger cars. At the same time, stable coasting and precise steering make driving easier. The rear suspension is semi-independent. It used torsion beam with hyxoidal springs and Panhard rod. This design turned out to be so successful and reliable that it "survived" to the fourth generation Espace without significant changes. In addition to shock absorbers and silent blocks in the rear suspension, in fact, there is nothing to wear out. And yes, they last a long time. Some - mostly luxury versions with a V6 engine - were equipped with air bellows at the rear, which act as a kind of corrector ground clearance. Replacing a worn-out cylinder is not particularly difficult. Pneumatic clearance adjustment is carried out in automatic mode, and therefore does not cause any additional trouble to the owner of the car.
Beginning in 1996, minivan rear brakes were offered in a disc version, further enhancing their reliability.
Most often on the market you can find Espace with 2-liter gasoline engines F3R (115 hp) and F4R (140 hp). It is the 115-strong version that enjoys most in demand. At the same time, experts consider the most successful motor for Espace F4R version. This unit has 4 cylinders, 16 valves and, most importantly, variable valve timing. The F4R's 140 horsepower is most reasonable for this class cars, since the 115-horsepower engine is designed more for a calm driver.
Diesel engines were offered in a turbocharged 1.9-liter version (F9Q) and a 2.2-liter atmospheric (G8T). The turbodiesel modification of the minivan combines efficiency (8.5 l / 100 km in the urban cycle) with good traction characteristics(Torque of 184 Nm at 2000 rpm provides acceleration to 100 km/h in 15 seconds).
Cars were equipped with 2 types of mechanical boxes. The first, GS5, was paired with 4-cylinder engines; the second, RK1, - with a V6 engine.
Gearbox drives, in the tradition of the French company, have a non-separable design and, with a “healthy” anther, serve no less than the engine and the car as a whole. The check point aggregated with 4-cylinder engines is easy in service. Quite actively - at least in Europe - Espace used automatic transmissions. The most reliable is the French "automatic" LMO, which is almost perfect for the new 3-liter V6.

Chrysler Voyager/Dodge Caravan 1996-2001
The same car, to please the fans different brands, sold under the names Dodge Caravan, Chrysler Voyager and Plymouth Voyager. They could only be distinguished by branded "nameplates", elements of the front of the case - a radiator grille, bumpers and some differences in the cabin.
The main difference between the second generation Caravan and its predecessor is the appearance of two side sliding doors, although there was also a modification with a 4-door body, in which there was no second door on the driver's side.
The second and third row seats are removable. They are quite heavy, but when dismantled they can be transported on small built-in wheels. For passengers of the second row, additional deflectors of the "stove" are displayed.
A Grand version was also produced. Due to the wheelbase extended by 152 m, it was possible to significantly increase the volume of the cabin and the capacity of the cargo compartment.
It is not surprising that many years of production experience has made it possible to create a vehicle that is the best suited for long-distance travel by a large company. Everything is thought out to the smallest detail. The automatic transmission selector lever, in the tradition of the American automobile industry, is placed on the steering column. Accordingly, you can switch from the front to the rear seats without leaving the passenger compartment.
Despite the auxiliary importance of the third row of seats, even they are equipped with ashtrays and a cigarette lighter. The disadvantage is the tightly closed side windows of the sliding doors.
The disadvantages include the impossibility of installing the front seats against the direction of travel, but the middle row can be deployed. In addition, a one-piece rear sofa instead of the usual chairs significantly limits the possibility of transformation.
The offer of motors largely depended on the model. Most wide choose power units from the Chrysler Voyager, which was aimed at both the American and European markets. He can even meet such an unsuitable power unit for a bulky car as a 2.0-liter gasoline engine. A 2.4-liter modification was also supplied to the European market. But the most widely used in our country are 3.3- and 3.8-liter “sixes”, which can also be found under the hood of the Dodge Caravan. These units are equipped with a timing belt with a lower camshaft driven by a chain and rods. The design is clearly outdated, but with its simplicity it provides reliability and a high resource. 500 thousand up overhaul- quite achievable indicator.
Please note that all gasoline engines are different high flow fuel. The smallest 2.0-liter unit consumes about 13 liters per 100 km in the urban cycle, and the largest - 3.8-liter - under 19 liters.
Against this background, European versions equipped with a 2.5-liter VM turbodiesel may be the best option- consumption of diesel fuel in the city is about 11 liters per 100 km. This engine has been tested for a long time, and there should not be any special problems with its maintenance.
Caravan and Voyager were offered with two types of gearboxes. 6-cylinder modifications were supplied exclusively with automatic transmissions. For the 4-cylinder versions aimed at Europe, a 5-speed "mechanics" was offered. Specialists have practically no comments on it, but the “automatic” for a run of 200 thousand km will certainly require a bulkhead with the replacement of friction clutches. Fortunately, the gearbox is maintainable, so there are no problems with its maintenance.
Quite rare guests on our roads are all-wheel drive versions with a 3.8-liter gasoline engine. Structurally, they are nothing complicated - the torque is transmitted to rear axle through the viscous coupling. But the 4x4 formula forced the installation of an independent suspension at the rear, in case of repair of which it is necessary to use more expensive original parts. The drive itself lasts a long time. Only the use of wheels with different diameters or degrees of wear can disable the viscous coupling.
on-drive versions were equipped with a dependent rear suspension with a continuous beam axle on leaf springs. This allows you to completely forget about any repair work. The only thing that is possible is the sagging of the springs on specimens that are used as cargo vans.
Brake system (front - disc, rear - drum brakes) does not present any surprises. ABS may be missing as it was offered as an option. A good ground clearance of a minivan allows you to go out into nature without any problems. In terms of maintenance, Voyager is more expensive than the same Sharan by no more than 10 - 20%.

One of the most important qualities for a minivan is that this model has plenty of space. If necessary, four passengers can be accommodated on the second and third solid rows of seats. The rear side doors are not hinged, but sliding type. Thanks to this, in dense parking lots with a limited amount of free space, boarding and disembarking is greatly facilitated.
The car was equipped with two petrol engines: 1.8 l and 2.0 l Turbo, as well as a 2.1 l 12V turbodiesel (109 hp). The motor resource of engines averages 400 - 500 thousand km. Turbodiesel versions are more demanding to maintain than petrol ones.
The most common vehicles are equipped with mechanical boxes gears that require a minimum of attention - you just need to monitor the tightness, since the lubricant is designed for the entire service life. But in the "automatic" oil requires regular replacement- it must be carried out every 60 thousand km.
Minivans are equipped with independent front suspension and semi-independent rear suspension with anti-roll bars. In general, the suspension is soft and therefore has good energy consumption and keeps even on our roads. First of all, ball bearings suffer, which “nourish” from 40 to 80 thousand km.
Low-power versions (up to 100 hp) were equipped with rear drum brake mechanisms, and all the rest - disc, only ventilated discs were used in front. The braking system is quite effective. In addition, most minivans are equipped with ABS.

The equipment of these models depends on the equipment level. The higher it is, the more practical and more comfortable car. At different times in different sales markets, the configurations of all three models were called differently, although, in fact, they repeated each other.
First level. In cars of the early years of production (1995-1996) it is recognized by unpainted bumpers. The interior is covered not with velor, but with fabric. But even inexpensive versions of the minivan amaze with the practicality of the transforming cabin. All chairs are separate, they can be folded and rearranged in any configuration, since the floor is dotted with numerous fixtures. The only but: the driver's and front passenger's seats that turn 180 degrees are found only in more expensive versions. In the complete set entry level, perhaps, there will not even be electric windows and mirrors, as well as an air conditioner. They were set up for a fee.

Highest level.The top version of Ford was called "Ghia", Volkswagen - "Carat". They were originally supplied with a 6-seater saloon. As if in the business class compartment of a transcontinental airliner, all passengers in them sit on separate chairs with folding armrests. From the inside, the car is trimmed with higher quality velor.
Most often found on the market are minivans with 4-cylinder gasoline engines. The base for both models was a 2-liter power unit. Ford and Volkswagen engines are very similar in performance and produce the same 116 horsepower. under the hood passenger car middle class similar engine looks very decent. But the minivan is much heavier, so with a 2-liter engine, even empty, it does not shine with dynamics. When all the seats are occupied in the cabin, overtaking on a country road is already becoming difficult. Such a machine will suit a calm driver who will not constantly operate it with a full load.
Realizing that the usual 2-liter engine is rather weak for a minivan, both concerns since the fall of 1997 have offered additionally more powerful engines. The Sharan gets a 150-horsepower 1.8 Turbo, while the Galaxy gets a 2.3-liter under the hood atmospheric motor with a capacity of 147 forces.
For those who dreamed of becoming a pilot as a child, and now sometimes embodies an unfulfilled desire on public roads, the VR6 engine can be recommended. Behind the abbreviation VR6 lies a unique Volkswagen engine. This is an intermediate link between engines with a V-shaped and in-line arrangement of cylinders. The "V" angle is so small that it has become "almost in-line". Of course, with such a powerful and smooth engine the minivan drives like a business class sedan. But such pleasure does not come cheap. When buying such a minivan, you should be prepared for fuel consumption, like an average gasoline SUV - about 12-18l / 100km. The motor is generally reliable, but more prone to overheating than others.
"Syncro" inscription on tailgate Volkswagen Sharan or "4x4" on Ford body Galaxy means that the car is equipped with a 4x4 transmission. Under normal conditions, the machine has front-wheel drive. When they start to slip, the rear ones are connected automatically through the viscous coupling.
Our buyer does not like passenger cars with a diesel engine. But a minivan is a different matter. On it, the 1.9 TDi turbodiesel looks as harmonious as on an SUV. After all, the car is very heavy, able to take on board a lot of passengers and cargo. In such conditions, an irrepressible “appetite” appears in gasoline engines. But on diesel versions, a full load almost does not affect either fuel consumption or dynamics. Two turbodiesels were installed on the minivan. The 90-horsepower variant was first designated by the index "1Z". Subsequently, the motor was repeatedly upgraded, the power remained the same, but the designation changed. However, we recommend the second version of the diesel engine - with a capacity of 110 forces - an excellent engine, which in terms of dynamics is practically not inferior to gasoline "brothers". The number of such an engine begins with the abbreviation AFN.

Today, for many, a minivan is not only convenient, but also stylish. Initially clumsy and unattractive, by the 90s they had acquired quite a decent appearance. Some models still look futuristic today.
The civilized world appreciated minivans twenty years ago. True auto gourmets will never exchange them for wasteful jeeps, or cramped station wagons, or heavy utility vans. They have the comfort and handling of a car, but at the same time in reserve inner space only slightly behind the "full-fledged" minibuses.

This will help you choose not only the class of the car, but also a certain model - for example, for someone the decisive factor in choosing is the widest possible transformation of the interior, and for someone the dynamics of the car will be decisive. If there is even the slightest doubt, it is better to look at something else or refuse and wait out the moment.
And finally, before buying, be sure to test several cars of a similar class on the go in order to understand which one is better.
"American" or "European"?
The fact that the tastes of Europeans and the inhabitants of the New World about cars differ very much is known to everyone. And it's not just the size, although the concept of "compact" in its European and overseas understanding has a slightly different embodiment.
American minivans generally win in terms of long engine life and luggage space. However, in most models there are fewer opportunities for interior transformation than European competitors. The disadvantages include "gluttony" gasoline engines. Naturally, this is not general characteristics all products of the American automobile industry.
European models offer ample opportunities for transforming the interior and successful, from the point of view of our roads, suspension designs, however, the front suspensions of European minivans are less durable than those of their American counterparts.
