A set of tools for a car mechanic. Special tool for car service and hundred

Less and less free space remains under the hood modern car. The manufacturer strives to use every square centimeter of space around the engine. For a car mechanic it is additional problems, as it becomes more and more difficult to get to dismantle some part, more and more hard-to-reach places.

Here, I picked up a very interesting list of 19 special professional tools and devices that can help solve this problem.
Of course, some tool may seem very exotic and little used in work, but every auto repairman who is more or less engaged in professional repair cars.

So, let's go in order.

Comfortable bright light

LED lamp, made in the format of a "police baton" with magnetic mounts.
It is very convenient to use when working under the bottom of the car or under the hood. Strong magnets will hold the lantern in place without any problems, and the 200-degree swivel tube can be rotated exactly where you need a bright light. Can work from onboard network, and from your battery.

The ability to switch the brightness more / less and its own rechargeable battery allow the lamp to work offline for up to 8 hours. And as a bonus, it great option garage lighting during a power outage.

Crank for hard-to-reach places

Working under the hood engine compartment, sometimes you have to face the problem of unscrewing and tightening the bolt, especially if it is in a hard-to-reach place and is tightened with a decent moment.
And here such a special wrench operating in ratchet mode can come in handy.

Metal stripping and deburring tool

A very interesting hand-held pneumatic tool, one might say percussion ... Something reminded me of sandblasting, only everything is much simpler.
By connecting it to the compressor without much effort, you can beat off rust, scale after welding or old paint.

The principle of operation is simple - steel needles (options from 12 to 19 needles are possible) at a speed of 4000-4600 beats per minute (depending on the model) will knock out corrosive places to pure iron. It is especially convenient when used in hard-to-reach places where the brush cannot be reached.

When working with this tool, you should use the tools personal protection: thick gloves, goggles and earmuffs.

Nut Breaker

With this special tool (I call it a wrench) you can break any nut if it is impossible to unscrew it.
Surely any of you have come across rusted nuts, especially when overhauling the chassis, tearing off the splines and cursing.
Now everything is simple: put on the ring, brought the hardened “tooth” to the nut and twist until it just breaks the nut. A big plus of such a tool is that the thread on the bolt or stud is not damaged, all that remains is to throw off the broken nut and drive a new one with oil along the thread.

Kiwi pliers

You probably have a lot of pliers in your arsenal of tools, but there definitely aren’t any!
Have you noticed that when you try to grab a small part in an uncomfortable place with ordinary pliers, your hand makes it difficult to see the process, blocking it?
Kiwi pliers, so named for some resemblance to this New Zealand bird, will solve this problem - it will be more convenient to work.

Set of moving heads for hard-to-reach places

Having such a set, where each head has its own cordan, you get additional features when working in hard-to-reach places of the car. These sockets have a much shorter body than normal sockets when used with the stock gimbal in the kit.
Minus one, this set is not cheap.

Hook set

When disassembling a car for repair, it is often necessary to disconnect various electrical connectors.
IN latest models cars, they are often combined with plastic fasteners and disconnected without a special tool, they can be easily damaged.
With this set of hooks, almost any connector can be conveniently disconnected without breaking it.

Spark plug pliers

If you try to pull out the candle cap with ordinary pliers, you can easily damage the rubber cap or the wire itself. So we came up with this interesting gadget- special pliers for removing high voltage wires from the spark plug.

Two point jack

There are cases when, when performing repair work, it is necessary to jack up two places at once.
This problem can be solved by using a jack head with two independent (adjustable) seats. This fixture is installed instead of a regular saddle. Can be extended up to right size, as well as rotate the crossbars around the central axis of the jack.

Tightening torque with digital precision

Tightening the bolts without a special torque wrench, without taking into account the recommended tightening torques, can cause serious damage to the car.
As a rule, a professional auto repairman who respects his client in the workshop has several different torque wrenches for different tasks. Now, this amount can be replaced by purchasing one electronic digital adapter and using it with a ratchet or other wrench with a half-inch adapter. The digital display will show the current torque and beep when the correct torque is reached.

Magnetic badge

How much time can be spent looking for a just unscrewed part: “I just put it somewhere here ...” a bolt, a nut and similar little things that are always lost.
A very interesting solution is a magnetic badge on the belt. Just stick an unscrewed screw (nut) to it and you won’t have to look for it when the part is needed again.

Tools for hard to reach places

Here are six more interesting mini sets of special tools for working in hard-to-reach places during disassembly-assembly. Here, in principle, everything is clear where and how they can be used.

  1. Set of four short screwdrivers.
  2. A set of ratchet and bits with various curly tips: stars, hexagons, squares.
  3. A flexible extension with a magnetic tip that can accommodate a variety of bits or sockets.
  4. Miniature rotating gimbal with ¼ inch adapter.
  5. Set of three special ratchets.
  6. A set of 90-degree ratchet screwdriver and bits for it.

Stand

Interesting, I don't even know what to call it.
The platform is mounted directly on the wheel, has several adjustments, both in width and in height. It is very convenient when you are repairing a high jeep or minibus. Of course, you can use, for example, a box to stand higher, but standing on a box is somewhat inconvenient and you can easily, at the most unnecessary moment, drive away from the wheel, and all that remains for you is to slow down with your face on the hood ... probably everyone knows?

Mirror and magnets for inaccessible places

Mirror on a telescopic handle and two magnets included (one swivel).
Every auto repairer should have this kit.
Imagine the situation that when unscrewing the nut, you did not hold it, and it fell somewhere on the engine or gearbox. How to find and get it?
And here, a mirror and a magnet will come to your aid.

Get maximum power in a hard to reach place

Looking at this set of special keys, it is immediately clear what it is intended for.
Using an extension and a ratchet standard set heads, you can tighten almost any "uncomfortable" nut in the engine compartment. Perfect for dismantling the steering gear or brake system.

Achieving the ideal tightening torque

This special torque wrench will prevent you from accidentally stripping threads in modern aluminum engines. If you are unwilling to purchase electronic device to control the tightening torque, about which it was a little higher, then this very inexpensive wrench will be accurate enough and the very thing that the doctor ordered.
Two models of this tool (almost full coverage of all values) will undoubtedly be a good purchase for your garage.

How to unscrew the bolt if the hat is broken?

Undoubtedly, everyone has come across this "nightmare" - when a rusted old bolt is unscrewed, its cap breaks off (breaks off) and that's it ...
Dances with a tambourine begin, drilling, restoration of threads with a tap, etc.

With this set, in the photo below, you solve the whole problem at once in a complex. It has everything to accurately drill and extract what is left of a bolt with a diameter of 5 mm to 16 mm from the body.

Digital safety tester

If you're up for a test electrical circuits are still using an analog tester, then there is a very high probability that you will spoil on-board computer car.
The digital tester is safe because it does not use a ground cable. You simply stick it into the test socket or pierce the insulation of the wire (the stainless steel tip is sharp enough) and with your other hand touch any metal part of the car to complete the circuit.
Checking from 3 to 24 Volts works direct current. It is possible to install sound signal or turn on the LED to signal the presence of voltage.

Save the Hoses

A very useful tool for removing antifreeze hoses. After several years of operation, the antifreeze hoses in the places where they are tightened with clamps firmly stick to the pipe. If you don't want to cut the hose during removal and save it for later installation, then this special hook tool is what you need.
Simply insert the pointed end under the hose and pull it around the pipe.
This cool tool will help you save a lot of money.

You can buy these and other sets on the largest portal amazon.com, you just have to look, some keys can be both in the metric system and in inches.
It is not so easy to buy such a tool in Russia, except to search in online stores.

Depending on the method of execution, washing can be done manually, mechanized and combined. Manual washing is done with a hose with a hose or a brush. When washing with a medium jet or high pressure the hose must have a washing gun that allows you to adjust the shape of the jet. For washing the lower, more polluted parts of the car, a directed, dagger jet is used; for washing the upper parts, a fan-shaped, cone-shaped jet is used.

For mechanized washing, special washing installations are used, which, depending on the control method, can be automatic or manually operated.

Combined washing is used in the case when one part of the car is washed manually, and the other - mechanized.

For car washing, washing installations are used, which can be stationary jet-brush with a carriage moving around the car and moving the car, and stationary brushless with a carriage moving around the car and moving the car.

Stationary jet-brush units are equipped with brushes with an oscillating suspension system. Most widespread for washing cars received mobile washing installations. They are a U-shaped arch, moving with the help of an electric drive along the rails laid on the washing path. Two vertical and one horizontal rotary brushes with electric drives, brushes for washing wheel rims and a device for drying (blowing) the car after washing are mounted on the portal. The brushes are wetted through a system of pipes with nozzles. Most washers have an additional spray arch that provides pre-wetting and rinsing. The washing sequence is controlled by a computer.

The technological process with the use of a modern washing plant consists of the following operations: general washing of the car with high-pressure water; spraying detergent foam with chemical elements to soften oil and grease deposits; two-pass washing with floating brushes that go around the contours of the car, with simultaneous washing of the bottom of the car; spraying wax (polishes); two-pass forced drying.

The disadvantage of brush wash systems is the damage to the surface of the car as a result of the action of the brushes. The brushes of the unit must be periodically cleaned of accumulated dirt, which is not always done. To prevent damage to the surface on some models of washing installations, rag strips are used in brushes instead of lint.

The performance of brush units is from 30 to 40 vehicles per hour at an operating pressure of 0.4-0.6 MPa. Washing one car consumes up to 900 liters of water.

For washing the body and the lower part of the car, stationary brushless washing installations are used. They do not damage the antennas and other external equipment of the car, and also do not leave scratches on paint coatings. The performance of the units is from 20 to 30 vehicles per hour at an operating pressure of 0.8-1.2 MPa. Water consumption for washing one car - 1200-1800 liters.

Due to the increased demands of car owners for the quality of washing, as well as the high cost of brush washers, small-sized mobile high-pressure washers are increasingly being used. They can have a pump drive, both from an electric motor and from an engine. internal combustion. Washing is carried out with hot or cold water at a pressure of 3-15 MPa.

At present, given the high cost of water, washing plants are equipped with water recycling systems, and biological water purification systems are also used.

To remove moisture from the car after washing, use special installations, which remove moisture with the help of air heated to 40-50 ° at a pressure of 0.2-0.4 MPa, infrared rays, etc. Moisture from the engine and ignition system devices is removed after washing compressed air using a special gun at a pressure of 1 MPa. The outer surfaces of the cab, hood, lining, headlights, fenders, sidelights are wiped with a cleaning material, and the polished surface of the body is wiped with a bike or suede.

Portable and mobile vacuum cleaners are used to clean the car interior.

Handling equipment

In order to have convenient access to all components and assemblies of the car, various lifts have become widespread at car service enterprises. They can be equipped with electromechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic drives.

Two-post, four-post, scissor and plunger lifts, as well as tippers are used for maintenance and repair of passenger cars. When servicing a car on inspection ditches, ditch lifts can be used.

Most often, floor two-column electromechanical lifts with a carrying capacity of 2-3 tons are used. Such a lift consists of two box-shaped racks and a cross member. In each rack there is a lead screw, along which the load-lifting nut moves. A carriage with pivotally mounted sliding pickups is attached to the nut. The load-lifting lead screws are driven by an electric motor through a gearbox. Rotation to another screw is transmitted using a chain drive installed inside the cross member.

The lift is controlled by a push button switch. The lifting height is 1.8-2.0 m, the lifting time is 50-60 s. In the extreme upper and lower positions, the carriage is stopped by the limit switch of the electric motor. The lift is installed without a special foundation on a flat surface and is attached to the floor with anchor bolts.

Tippers are used when washing the bottom of the car before maintenance or repair, before welding work, anti-corrosion coatings. good access to the bottom and axes of the car is preserved in the case of using single-column hydraulic lifts. The car can be raised to a small height using a hydraulic, pneumohydraulic or pneumatic jack.

Inside the car service company, lifting the car and moving its units is carried out using electric hoists, hoists, mobile cranes, cargo trolleys, crane beams and other equipment.

Other types of equipment

For the production of technical inspections and repairs of cars, diagnostic tools are used to detect defects without disassembling the car. The technical condition of the components, assemblies and devices of the car is established according to diagnostic parameters, individual values of which indicate a violation of the operating mode, adjustments, interfaces of parts of devices and mechanisms. Diagnosis is one of the technological elements of technical inspection.

The equipment used for diagnostics can be portable, stationary and mobile. Stationary equipment includes stands of various designs and types, on which they check the condition of the brake system, suspension, traction, angles of steered wheels, wheel balancing, etc. Mobile equipment includes a set of special devices that are used to diagnose engine systems and mechanisms in need of repair, for example, motor testers, as well as devices for determining the composition of exhaust gases, devices for checking headlights, dimensions and turns, stands for balancing wheels without removing them from car.

There are many small-sized devices for checking the performance of aggregates, components and systems of a car, for example, scanners, compressors and others, which are used as portable equipment.

To help determine the type and severity of faults and better service car in small auto repair shops use the following devices.

Ohmmeter, which serves to check the resistance of the ignition coil, as well as to check the elements of the electronic injection system.

Voltmeter, which serves to check the condition of the contacts of the breaker, check the electrical network, the condition of the battery and the voltage regulator.

Ammeter used to check the electronic ignition system, as well as the battery charge.

Hydrometer used to check the density of the electrolyte in the battery and the coolant in the radiator.

torque wrench. Used to determine the tightening torque of fasteners, as well as spark plugs.

Revolution counter. Used for speed control idle move carburetor and diagnostics fuel pump.

Hourly optimeter. Used to determine the runout of the wheel, check the clearance in the wheel bearings.

Manometers for various pressures. Used to check the fuel pump, tires, engine oil pressure, brake pressure.

probes. They are used to check the gaps in the valves, between the contacts of the breaker, check the candles and the generator.

Painting and drying chambers. Painting and drying chambers of various designs are used for painting a car and subsequent drying. The chamber is a collapsible structure made of insulated panels. In order to prevent dust from falling on the surface to be painted and in order to ensure sanitary and hygienic working conditions during painting, the chamber is equipped with supply and exhaust ventilation, which is necessary to remove the sprayed paint and the solvent included in its composition.

Maintenance and current repairs can be carried out by mechanized, mechanized-manual and manual methods. In the mechanized method, metalworking machines, forging and pressing equipment, conveyors for moving cars, electric hoists, electric hoists, beam cranes, stacker cranes, mechanized hoists for hanging cars, diagnostic stands, microprocessor technology, etc. are used.

In the case of using a mechanized-manual method of performing work, the most labor-intensive operations are mechanized, in which the auto mechanic uses various mechanized tools and equipment, for example, a manual (hose) washer, oil dispensing equipment, electric and pneumatic wrenches, instrumentation, air dispensing columns, pneumatic spray guns, as well as other tools, devices and equipment with electric, hydraulic, pneumatic and other drives and driven by a special source of energy. At the same time, a significant share of manual labor can also be retained here, when the employee delivers the tool to the place of operations, its adjustment and connection.

With the manual method, work is performed using the simplest tools, as well as devices and devices: pullers (Fig. 1), jacks, cranes and other equipment that does not have a drive from a special energy source.

The quality of repair and preventive maintenance, and, first of all, car diagnostics, is significantly improved when using microprocessor technology, which increases the accuracy of parameter calculation, visual and graphic clarity of the results reproduction, which favorably affects technical condition car. At the same time, traffic safety is also increased, since the diagnosis of malfunctions before leaving the car serves as a guarantee that technical failures will not occur during operation. Careful and quality service engine and its systems with the help of microprocessor devices reduces the toxicity of exhaust gases, which is especially important when operating a car in urban conditions.

The condition for the correct diagnosis and repair of vehicle malfunctions is a well-chosen tool and accessories that are stored on racks or in tool cabinets, portable boxes and mobile carts. At various workplaces, workbenches are used, consisting of a desktop, on which, as a rule, a vice and other devices are installed. Tools are stored in the drawers of the workbench.

In the toolbox general purpose for execution technical repair the car may include: pullers of various designs, which are used for disassembly and assembly of hard-to-remove and mounted parts; metalwork hammer with a wooden handle; screwdrivers: slotted, cross-shaped, with a nut welded to the blade, with a fork, a screwdriver-tip that fits into a socket wrench and some other types of screwdrivers of various sizes; candle key; adjustable wrench; socket wrenches 6-17 mm; special sliding universal pliers; a set of probes and barbs; files different types; socket wrench for unscrewing the wheel nuts; charger battery; pliers with insulating covers; pliers universal; sector scissors; monter's knife; chisels; hacksaw for metal; scrapers; metal-cutting tools (drills, countersinks, scrapers, reamers); measuring tool; drilling machines, etc.

Hand tools are used to tighten fasteners (bolts, nuts and screws). The following is a list hand tool which no auto mechanic can do without. The specialized tool is not included in this list.

Have you had to borrow an instrument several times? So you need to buy it!

Most auto mechanics will not refuse their young colleague's request to borrow this or that tool sometimes. But if you have needed some tool several times already, buy it as soon as possible. Also, when returning a borrowed instrument, make sure it is clean and return it to the person from whom you borrowed it. In this way, you will strengthen the trust of your colleagues.

Why did "Philips" become the common name for one type of screwdriver?

In 1936, inventor Henry M. Phillips patented the Philips head screw. The cross slot on the head of this screw does not reach the edge of the screw head, so the screwdriver bit is always fixed in the center of the screw head.

Rice. Safety goggles are an essential accessory for any tool kit.

Rice. Combination wrench. Both wrench heads are designed for the same bolt head size. Please note that the open end is angled to the wrench handle to make it easier to work in tight spaces.

Rice. Three open end wrenches different quality. The cheapest one (left) is made of weak steel and is thicker and rougher than a standard key (center). The key is shown on the right. professional quality(and corresponding price)

Don't use this tool.

A young mechanic who joined the workshop, having come to work on the first day, put his tool box on the workbench. Another mechanic saw that, along with a full set of quality tools, there were several adjustable wrenches, and said: "Put this away from the eyes of the authorities." The movable jaws of an adjustable wrench often slip over the surface of the head of a bolt or nut, rounding off sharp edges, and unwind such a damaged fastener becomes much more difficult.

Rice. Ring wrench with a split head with a hexagonal mouth. Also known as "pipe wrench", "plumbing wrench" or "pipe wrench". The jaw of this key covers most of the faces of the hexagonal profile of pipeline fittings and allows you to capture the part as tightly as possible without damaging it.

Rice. Ring head wrench. Recommended for loosening and tightening bolts and nuts where a socket wrench cannot be used. Heads on both sides of the key have different number. Such a wrench is preferable to an open-end wrench, because it covers the bolt head around the perimeter, and not only on both sides, like an open-end wrench

Rice. The open end wrench is a general purpose tool. The heads on both sides of the key have a different fit size (number). An open-ended wrench should not be used to tighten "up to the stop" or loosen a heavily tightened threaded connection because of the danger of its breakdown from the head of the bolt or nut

Rice. Flat-bladed screwdrivers (left) vary in blade length and thickness. The thickness of the tip should correspond to the width of the slot on the screw head. Phillips screwdrivers (right) vary in length and the size of the "pig" at the tip of the sting. The Phillips No. 1 screwdriver has the smallest “patch”, while the Phillips No. 2 screwdriver (it is shown in the photo) - the most common - has a larger one. The bluntest tip of the Philips No. 3 screwdriver, designed to work with the largest screws

Reception using grinding paste

Apply a small amount of valve grinding paste to the head of the bolt or screw. She will "grab" the sting of a screwdriver or other tool, preventing it from "breaking" from the fastener. You can buy this paste in tubes at any auto parts store.

Rice. Various ticks. Combination pliers (far left) are often confused with plumbing pliers (second from left)

Rice. Ball-faced hammers (above) commercially available vary in head weight (usually stated in ounces). Shown below is a hammer with a soft (plastic) head. The hammer head should always be softer (higher ductility) than the material being machined. To avoid damage when machining cast iron or steel engine parts, place a block of wood or similar material between them and a steel-headed hammer.

Rice. Different kinds socket wrench

Rice. Various options extensions (extensions) of socket heads. Universal articulated extension, shown in the center (bottom), is convenient for working in hard-to-reach places

Rice. Socket heads - dodecahedral, hexagonal and octagonal. It is better to use hex sockets as they cover all six facets of the head of a standard bolt or nut, allowing more force to be applied without stripping the facets of the head

Rice. The hexagonal socket fits all the faces of the head of the bolt or nut. A dodecagonal head, when applied with excessive force, can “rip off” the edges of the head of a bolt or nut

Rice. Sockets: standard dodecahedral short (left), articulated (center) and extended (right). The last two are hexagonal

Rice. Standard files. Never use a file without a handle

Rice. A mechanical collet (top) and a telescopic probe with a magnet on the end (bottom) are indispensable tools when you need to get a small part that has fallen in a place where your fingers cannot reach

Rice. Stethoscope - with its help, the mechanic "listens" to the engine, looking for a place from which a suspicious noise comes

Rice. A typical sharpening machine. Pay attention to the installed on it protective screen. But, although the screen provides some protection for the eyes, when working on this or any other machine, be sure to protect your eyes with safety glasses.

Rice. Jig saw. The teeth of the hacksaw blade should be oriented away from the saw handle. The thinner the material being cut, the finer the teeth of the hacksaw blade should be.

Rice. Drill (top) with spiral flutes (grooves) and reamer (bottom) with straight cutting edges

Rice. Various punches (left) and chisel (right)

Rice. The head of this chisel is riveted, and this is dangerous (a). When hit with a hammer on such a chisel, sharp fragments of metal can break off from it and injure you. When you find a tool with a riveted head, grind off the riveted part, as shown in this photo. This will avoid the risk of injury (b)

Rice. Thread cutting using a hand die

Rice. Taps - rough and finish. Finishing taps are typically used to clean or update existing threads in parts.

Rice. Dies are used to cut external threads on cylindrical rods, and taps are used to cut internal threads in holes.

Rice. Installing a tap in a drilled hole. To obtain the required clearance in the thread, the diameter of the hole must exactly match the size of the tap. A drill bit of the appropriate diameter is called a tap drill

Rice. An inexpensive honeycomb tray is convenient for organizing small parts

Rice. A good portable fluorescent lamp is very necessary for work. A fluorescent lamp does not get as hot as an incandescent lamp and will not cause a fire if it is accidentally splashed with gasoline, unlike the unprotected incandescent lamps used in some emergency lamps

Rice. To begin with, it is enough to have a set of only the most necessary tools. Experienced, highly trained auto mechanics spend thousands of dollars annually on tools, like the one in this big (and expensive) toolbox.
