Toyota Will VS, 2003

Dark-blue colour. Complete set with navigator and spoiler. The Toyota Will VS is the final in a series of ten "E120" Corolla body styles in its non-US market generation. It is believed that this is an ordinary Corolla, only in a different body. This is wrong. There are very few common parts, of which, for example, a spare wheel pan and part of the electrics. Toyota Will VS differs only in a slightly native tuning of the interior: silver lining on the doors, lining on the thresholds and pedals. Bought purely by accident, or rather wanted to "Villa", was about to buy, but the seller on the day of the sale refused to sell. I found another one, even better, spent the day on inspection, bought it the next day. The car pleases with excellent handling, dynamism and comfort. Advantages - bright design (brightness is expressed in indifference to the car, both in the negative and in the positive direction). The short length is convenient in urban conditions (although the car is not such a “stump” - the Volkswagen Polo sedan is longer), dynamism and precise control, body rigidity, light weight, build quality, reliability and unpretentiousness, and most importantly - reliability. The comfortable fit of the driver and passengers predisposes to long trips. Frost resistant motor. Inexpensive consumables and their prevalence. Salon at Toyota Will VS - transformer. Despite the small appearance of the cabin, the small windows inside are spacious for passengers and good visibility. Disadvantages - poor sound insulation (relative), stiff suspension, loves only good roads, low front overhang. Small regular battery capacity in extreme cold. Also in extreme cold there are problems with the shock absorbers of the trunk lid.

Advantages : design. Dynamics. Light weight. Build quality. Unpretentiousness in operation.

Flaws : soundproofing. Rigid suspension.

Toyota Will VS, 2001

Three years I dreamed about Toyota Will VS and now I have it. Expectations are 100% justified. It's not a car - it's a Stealth on wheels. Yes, the car is 2001, yes, it is 12 years old, but who can say it outwardly? And even more so sitting behind the wheel of this machine. In technical terms, we have a 1.8-liter engine (VVT-i), 136 "Japanese horses". Automatic 4-speed transmission, disc brakes. Well, you can read the technical specifications on the website. Specifically for my machine. She came to Russia in 2008, with a ridiculous mileage (which I will not write, in order to avoid disputes regarding its authenticity). There are all documents from the auction, documents from the company that brought and serviced this car are available. Toyota Will VS was in the same hands before me and was very well cared for. What became clear after the first inspection. I've run only 1000 km so far, so it's too early to write something specific. But I can say - the car is controlled just fine. The suspension is stiff (compared to my previous Allion). You seem to be sitting low, but at the same time the car is far from being a “puzoterka”. Toyota Will VS holds the road perfectly on the track (150 km / h, I haven’t overclocked it yet). In general, a dream come true, and I just enjoy driving this offspring of the Japanese automotive industry. Good luck to everyone on the road.

Advantages : appearance. Dynamics. Controllability. Excellent road holding.

Flaws : haven't noticed yet.

Toyota Will VS, 2002

Engine. Excellent motor of 125 horsepower. They carry very cheerfully, while they "eat" very little. My driving style allowed me to refuel no more than 8 liters per 100 kilometers, however, the main mileage was outside the city. Oil in Toyota Will VS changed every 10,000 kilometers, only Mobil 5W-40 synthetics. Many thanks to the designer, who placed the oil filter so conveniently that changing the oil and filter is elementary. In the same 10,000 kilometers, the air filter changed. For the entire period of owning a car, I changed the drive belt of mounted units twice, again thanks to the designer for the thoughtful decision. The oil pressure sensor and the crankshaft shank oil seal were replaced. Transmission. AKP - really adapts to the driving style. Given that I'm just obsessed with experiments to reduce fuel consumption, the box helped me as much as it could, moving to the highest level already at 50 km / h (again, I note in the summer). The oil was changed in the machine for 75 thousand km. At 100,000 kilometers in the rear gearbox, the seals were replaced and not a lot of oil was added. Chassis. I bet a thousand rubles that in Japan, the mechanic's key never got into the area of \u200b\u200bthe suspension of a car. In our glorious directions, silent blocks, stabilizer bushings, links changed every year. Replaced bearings front struts with anthers, steering tips, tie rods. I don't know why, but the front shocks survived, the rears didn't. Body. If you want to be always looked at - buy Toyota Will VS.

Advantages : bright appearance. Controllability. dynamic characteristics.

Flaws : no serious.

Toyota Will is one of the participants in the WiLL project, which was formed by a small group of Japanese companies in the late 90s. The purpose of this event was to create a single brand for the production of goods aimed at active youth and the younger generation. Among the companies involved in the production were Toyota, Kao Corporation (manufacturer of personal care products and cosmetics), Panasonic and some others. The main feature of WiLL was an unusual, and in many ways even futuristic appearance of products with good characteristics. Among the goods produced under the project were household appliances, furniture, personal computers and even cars from the Toyota Corporation.

WiLL vehicles

Toyota cars have always been distinguished by high reliability, build quality and demand. That is why, taking part in the WiLL project, the company thoroughly approached all the necessary requirements. From the beginning of 2000 until 2005, three versions of the machines were presented to the public: Vi, VS and VC (later Cypha). All of them looked very unusual and undoubtedly earned recognition from many motorists. The most important task of Toyota Villas was to enter those markets where the company's popularity was relatively low, as, in fact, sales figures.

Toyota Will Vi

As part of the introduction to the general trends of the project, in January 2000, Toyota Corporation introduced the first WiLL car. Outwardly, it was a compact car, combining elements of various cars of various times. Unusual technical solutions, such as, for example, a uniquely positioned rear window, have previously appeared in such auto giants as Mazda (for the Carol model), Ford (for the Angila model of 1959-1968) and Citroen (for model Ami).

The overall impression of the "neo-retro" design was inspired by the style of Japanese cars in the 1950s and 1960s. The car was equipped with a MacPherson-type suspension in front, while a torsion beam axle was in the back. The color scheme consisted mainly of pastel colors. Unfortunately, the sales turned out to be a failure, as a result, the Vi was replaced by the Cypha model.

The second generation of a futuristic car was the result of many years of development in pursuit of design. When it was presented at an exhibition in Los Angeles in 2001, the reaction from the public was unexpectedly positive. The design was inspired by the shapes of the F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter, which made it possible to give the appearance of style and unusual beauty.

There were three configurations, the richest of which was equipped with a 1.8-liter engine with a capacity of 180 hp, a tiptronic gearbox, alloy wheels and a unique body kit. Despite the success of the Toyota WiLL VS in the domestic market in Japan, as well as the beginning of a cult of worship for this model, it was never sold in other countries.

Toyota WiLL VC (Cypha)

Toyota's latest introduction to the WiLL concept found itself in the VC, later renamed the Cypha. The start of production started in 2002, even at the moment when the previous version of VS was on the assembly line. The "stuffing" was borrowed from a classmate - "Toyota East". Externally, the car was developed on the basis of the Witz and Yaris models, but only in a more angular design.

To be extremely frank, then Toyota Will Sifa (in another version - Saifa) became a continuation of the first not very successful generation. External differences from the predecessor were distinguishable only in the headlights. The front light lamps became vertical and had 4 blocks on each side. The rear ones were moved to the window, which resembled the Renault Megane 2.

In order to lure customers, Toyota came up with a program called Pay As You Go (literally, “pay while you drive”), which made it possible not to purchase a car for personal use by paying a monthly loan payment, but to purchase a car on lease and pay money only for the real mileage of the car, which could be run over during the period of ownership.

Public expectations

As it became clear from the above, Toyota Villa, reviews of which are quite contradictory, made a lot of noise in various countries and segments of the population. Despite the relatively lackluster success of the Vi and VC models, the intermediate car (VS) has become quite entrenched in the hearts of many car enthusiasts.

It was expected that after the completion of production in 2004, a new model would be introduced. But this never happened. This outcome caused frustration and an uproar among VS fans. Experts believe that Toyota Villa had a design and innovation that was ten years ahead of the overall development of the global automotive industry. That is why the surviving samples of VS are still quite popular to this day. Of course, every year it becomes more and more difficult to find a good device, because only 4000 pieces were produced. The small volumes of production are justified by the fact that, allegedly, the VS at the stage of a futuristic concept car was transferred to production. But we are unlikely to ever know the truth.

Scion as a sequel to WiLL

In 2004, the Japanese considered WiLL to be a rather unprofitable and unprofitable brand, and that is why production under this brand name ceased. Toyota also stopped producing branded cars, but instead a new direction of development appeared - NETZ.

In the United States, a division was opened, or rather, a subsidiary of Scion. The main concept of a fundamentally new brand was the development of cars that have found their popularity among young people. The rather successful tC, xB, xD and FR-S models have proven themselves well as analogues of the Japanese Toyotas with a left-hand drive. However, despite all efforts, Scion "lived" not for long. Only 13 years have passed since the opening, when it became clear that the company was not paying back its costs, and on August 5, 2016, the brand ceased to exist, leaving behind only already sold copies.

"Toyota Will" makes an ambiguous impression. This line of models can be regarded as a rather brave experiment. Most likely, predicting the losses associated with this event, the engineers and designers of the auto giant were not afraid to flaunt their wildest and unrealistic dreams, embodied in the WiLL lineup. And if the society had not reacted to such experiments so sharply, who knows, perhaps now the brand would be alive. But you should not talk about what is not there, and you can only remember the WiLL line with a smile. Another page in the history of the automotive industry will remain closed forever.

The WiLL project is the result of collaboration between manufacturers from different industries to create a new age brand. The second model of the WiLL brand from Toyota was the WiLL VS. It combined a 5-door hatchback and a sports station wagon. Such a merger largely determined the extravagant style of the car and its interior. In this regard, it is necessary to note the unique rear section of the car.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that the style-specific doors, chiseled headlights, narrow glazing and a metal plate-style radiator grille made this car one of the most advanced in design. WiLL VS was equipped with 1.5 and 1.8 liter engines.

The interior of Toyota WiLL VS also stands out for its originality of design solutions. The "combat" style of the instruments in the cockpit leaves an impressive impression. The design of the gear lever and its surroundings give the driver the feeling that he is not driving a car, but a fighter jet. Seats with integrated head restraints provide a sporty fit. The rear seats are also quite comfortable, with enough legroom and headroom, even with the sloping roof. There are plenty of handy storage spaces, including roomy compartments under the boot floor. In the maximum configuration, WiLL VS will satisfy the most stringent requests. The car is equipped with a Tiptronic gearbox, alloy wheels, fog lights, a factory aerodynamic body kit, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, climate control, an audio system with a CD and MD player.

Three variants of power units were installed on the car - all in-line "fours". Base - 1NZ-FE (1.5 l, 109 hp) with VVT-i system. Mid-level models, including all-wheel drive, are equipped with a 1ZZ-FE VVT-i engine (1.8 l, 125 hp). The top-end front-wheel drive modifications were equipped with a highly accelerated 2ZZ-GE unit (1.8 l, 190 hp) with a VVTL-i system with variable valve lift: in this version, the WiLL VS hatchback becomes really “hot”. The transmission is a 4-band "automatic", and for the top 1.8 VVTL-i, a six-speed manual gearbox was also offered. Depending on the modification, the mileage per liter of gasoline declared by the manufacturer was 12-16.6 l / 100 km - or 6.02-8.33 l / 100 km.

The chassis of the Toyota WiLL VS on the MC platform (Toyota Corolla E120) received the necessary improvements to achieve better handling. The suspension is more rigid and short-stroke, which is especially pronounced in the 190-horsepower modification. MacPherson struts in front, torsion bar suspension in the rear, and for all-wheel drive vehicles, the rear suspension is independent, on double wishbones. Basic models are content with 185/70R14 wheels, more powerful ones are equipped with 195/65R15 tires. Top models were equipped with 205/55R16 wheels. In the same way, fully disc brakes relied only on the most powerful modification, while conventional ones have drum mechanisms at the back. Hatchback body dimensions: 4385 x 1720 x 1430 (L x W x H). Wheelbase 2600 mm. The minimum turning radius is 4.9-5.1 m. Cabin dimensions: 1830 x 1405 x 1185. The rear seats are divided (60:40 ratio) and fold down to increase the luggage compartment. Its standard volume is 260 liters.

The safety of Toyota WiLL VS is given the same close attention as other representatives of the large family based on the Corolla. Standard equipment includes driver airbag, front passenger airbag, child seat anchors, anti-lock braking system and brake assist. The body of increased strength has stiffeners in the doors and programmed deformation zones.

The Toyota WiLL VS hatchback has an original and progressive design in a mixture of different styles, in many ways ahead of its time. The avant-garde interior will not let you get bored. The car is unpretentious and inexpensive to operate, although high-tech units do not allow saving on consumables and maintenance. Parts are available, but body parts will cost more than a Corolla.

Automobile - Toyota WiLL VS hatchback, manufactured in 2001, mileage about 100 thousand km, petrol engine 1.8 l / 192 l. with., automatic transmission, two owners in the Russian Federation. The car is rare - no more than 4,000 copies were produced and WiLL VS was not supplied to foreign markets outside of Japan.

Owner – Olga, 24, Muscovite, works in car lending. She loves the design of purely Japanese cars very much, she changed her first Mazda3 car to a right-hand drive WiLL VS. Owned for several months.

After obtaining the rights, I drove a practical and utilitarian Mazda three-ruble note for several years, but driving through Moscow traffic jams on the “mechanics” tired me ... Although, I must say, a car with a manual transmission taught me a lot, I don’t have to regret it! I really wanted to change it to "automatic", and at the same time to something interesting - not as boring as the Mazda3. I started looking at interesting and non-massive Japanese cars on sales sites, and literally fell in love with WiLL VS. The model was familiar to me - before it was often seen on our roads, but now it has become a rarity, and, as it turned out, there are already very few such cars on sale - we found less than a dozen in all of Moscow, according to the assortment of the two largest automotive marketplaces on the Internet.

Owner of Toyota WiLL VS

After looking at a couple, we bought our Will from a woman in Khimki - she was the only owner of the car after delivery to Russia in 2008 and gave it away very inexpensively, since the family had several cars: Toyota became unclaimed and even stood idle for some time. The price range for this model is from 300 to 400 thousand (depending on the amount of JDM styling that the owner shoved there), but we got it for an amount significantly below the minimum bar, plus in stock condition, without tuning.

The few months that Olga owns Will brought no surprises - the car turned out to be well-groomed and relatively trouble-free. Replacing oil, pads, refrigerant in the air conditioner, a battery sour from idle time with a Japanese-style funny capacity of 40 A / h, as well as dim lamps in the headlights (instead of which many model owners often put xenon not for show-off, but for the sake of need) are not troubles call it a matter of life.

To some extent, I was only unpleasantly surprised by the exactingness of the engine for high-octane fuel - only 98th gasoline is acceptable for a car, which is not sold at every gas station even in the capital. This fact was discovered when the car had already been purchased: in the confusion they didn’t even ask ...

Outside

WiLL VS is a car with a cartoonish, "anime" look. But not cute-silly, but so, or something ... "cool." Not a hypertrophied Batmobile, of course, but for a dashing and daring one (here you should give a couple of examples of true-anime heroes, but I am completely ignorant of the culture of Japanese animation, alas ...). The car does not have any shocking outlines, but stubbornly attracts the eye, especially because of the predominance of boring, faceless and even frankly ugly cars in the stream. As the hostess says, at first the attention on the road even frightened her, especially in the absence of tinting so beloved by her on the front windows.

Several times I saw how people, staring, even began to lose control! I, while driving, do not like to communicate with the outside world, feeling the car like a house ...

Owner of Toyota WiLL VS

The panel, from which the automatic transmission selector handle sticks out, is steeply inclined towards the driver, sticking out to the passenger with an edge like a knife blade.

The instrument panel scales resemble sights. It is possible, however, that the story about the search for inspiration by the designers of the machine in the stealth attack aircraft may turn out to be true ...

Of the comfort elements, of which there are not so many in the car, there are air conditioning, electric folding mirrors and electric windows. Due to purely Japanese origin, there is no winter package for heated seats and mirrors. Instead, there is a funny, but not very useful feature in practice - duplication of manual gear shifting with the UP and DOWN buttons on the steering wheel.

The high line of windows in the rear doors creates a cozy environment for the passengers of the sofa, giving a feeling of being closed and protected. Due to the small trunk, it is very spacious at the back - a large passenger is accommodated comfortably, without interfering with a tall driver at all. The same effect when there is more inside than outside.

The trunk, although it seems at first glance quite nothing due to the elongated ass of the car, in fact turns out to be very small due to the strongly inclined fifth door. However, Will can handle the luggage if necessary, since the rear seat folds down, forming, together with the mini-trunk, a quite decent cargo compartment. Under the floor of the hold live a spare wheel and a jack - nothing has been lost in 13 years!

The audio system of our WiLL is a native two-din "head" with a radio, CD-drive and a slot for mini-discs, made in the general design of the dashboard, an additional CD changer under the seat, as well as a single-din moving out 7-inch Carrozzeria monitor (this is a trademark of the company Pioneer for the Japanese domestic market). The monitor was responsible for navigation and TV and was clearly abnormal, as evidenced by the “blimb” of a wired GPS receiver awkwardly sticking out between the windshield and the dashboard.

However, the monitor was initially faulty. The CD drive also lost its functionality even with the previous owners, and at the moment only the radio (with the Japanese range from 76 to 90 megahertz) remains in the head unit and ... the mini-disc drive, amazing today, is MD. This laser standard, invented by Sony, was considered at one time to be very audiophile, and, apparently, its presence explains the very tasty and juicy sound of the standard audio system (although its staffing is questionable - the doors were not disassembled, and it is difficult to say whether the Japanese owner installed a non-stock acoustics?).

Mikhail, Olga's companion, a sound engineer by profession, after buying WiLL VS, was pleasantly surprised to appreciate the sound of the audio system of a 16-year-old car. Even in radio mode, when the frequency band is significantly cut both above and below, the sound is very "live". It seems that the system would show class on a mini-disk, but the outdated standard, with all its sound advantages, is inconvenient today, and Olga and Mikhail plan to change their “head” to something modern.

Iron

Actually, the suspension, front-wheel drive and an archaic four-stage torque converter "automatic" with the ability to manually switch, disc brakes in a circle and a completely traditional power steering in a car are quite simple and reliable. Motorists only scold the naturally aspirated 2ZZ-GE engine, which, in addition to WiLL VS, is found on many Toyota models (Celica, Corolla, Matrix) - with the VVTL-i system (variable valve timing and valve lift height and duration control).

They scold him as picky about oil and high-octane fuel (the compression ratio of a highly forced engine is 11.5). Piston, like all engines of the ZZ series, is prone to “oil burn”, and the lightweight aluminum block is without sleeves and with a minimum distance between the cylinders. In short, everything is short-lived and, in fact, unsuitable for major repairs. But high tech!

In addition to the hydraulic clutch on the camshaft, controlled by oil pressure and turning the “camshaft” relative to the “knee” depending on the speed and load, the VVTL-i complex also includes a two-stage valve lift system, as on the notorious “inflow” from Honda. To do this, the camshaft has two sets of cams - "economical" and "sporty". And the rocker arm, which transmits the force to the valve, can jump, respectively, to one or the other cam. There is no smooth regulation in this system - “quiet” camshaft cam profiles work up to 6,000 rpm, and then “aggressive” ones, raising the valves higher and improving the filling of the cylinders. The system, I must say, is not very stable and reliable, capable of throwing problems ...

In this case, the motor is located in the engine compartment quite freely. The intake and exhaust manifolds are separated on opposite sides of the engine, which is convenient for maintenance; the intake, in turn, is reliable aluminum, still of the “pre-plastic era”. Candles are changed without any difficulty, after removing the individual coils in the form of candle tips. Throttle - with classic cable control. The automatic transmission has a dipstick to check the oil level.

In move

Struggling with the unusual “right-handedness”, I get behind the wheel of the Will. Surprisingly comfortable seats with developed lateral support did not sag, despite their age, and it is possible to accommodate comfortably without difficulty. I press the accelerator (not to the floor, of course) - and I wonder, where are the 190 horses living under the hood, according to the PTS ?! The car accelerates sluggishly, according to subjective sensations, under the right foot - no more than 120-130, so, horses ... However, it growls regularly, “like an adult”, despite the fact that the release is regular, without tuning. The "drowsiness" of the engine is "not a bug, but a feature."

The high-speed atmospheric 2ZZ-GE only after 6,000 opens a second wind, provided by the already mentioned valve lift adjustment system. After the engine is spinning up, the car is transformed, the red zone on the tachometer is quite high - at a value of 8,000 rpm; however, it was not possible to get close to it in the conditions of a short winter test drive in urban conditions - traffic, a snowy road and a bald Velcro, which was already clearly expiring its resource on 16-inch disks and requiring replacement, interfered with it.

A four-speed automatic transmission does not have a fast drive, but on the gearshift handle, which puts the box in a three-speed mode, the revolutions at average city speeds will be higher, but the car does not eat less than 10 liters in this mode, and in winter in the city and all 12 easily. Gasoline - 98th, let me remind you ...

Irregularities the car passes smoothly, the suspension is quite comfortable. The steering wheel is not sharp, even slightly wadded. But, again, in urban conditions and in the absence of any dynamic stabilization systems, they did not try to “ignite” it. Brakes with ABS in a circle are disc, there are no complaints about braking - normal, adequate, but nothing very outstanding.

Model History

Toyota marketers know how to think outside the box. For example, within the framework of the so-called “Genesis project”, a Japanese company, apart from its other models, advertised Echo, Celica and MR2 Spyder cars in the USA, placing a strong emphasis on their youth, which, in general, hooked the target audience and fairly stimulated sales ... The Genesis Project eventually degenerated into a sub-brand of Scion, which by 2016 had died.

Actually, "WiLL" is a similar marketing game, but for the domestic Japanese market. This whole story was started in the late 90s as an interbrand project, which included a variety of companies - manufacturers of electronics, household appliances, food products, travel agencies ... Goods and services under a single brand "WiLL" were supposed to form a kind of integral ecosystem, in which young and advanced consumers were invited.

As a result, not all products were successful (Toyota WiLL VS just turned out to be an exception here!), And the single concept turned out to be not very expressive. That very integrity and a single core was just not enough, and the project gradually and imperceptibly turned sour - coffee grinders and vacuum cleaners, in the name of which the word “WiLL” appeared, were forgotten.

One way or another, the only automaker in the WiLL project - Toyota - introduced three models between 2001 and 2005: the strange freak WiLL Vi, the quirky WiLL Cypha and our today's hero WiLL VS.

The origin of the VS design has several versions - from using sketches provided by cartoonists to relying on the outlines of the famous F-117 Nighthawk attack aircraft, better known as "Stealth". The car, paradoxically, looks fresh even 13 years after the last VS rolled off the assembly line.

A number of fans and experts, disappointed with the cessation of production of the model in 2004, believed that the design of the VS, which had not survived a single restyling in 4 years, made it possible to produce the car for another ten years easily, without losing the interest of buyers. However, while being innovative on the outside, the WiLL VS was not over-engineered like many Japanese cars - the car was supposed to remain accessible to young people (although there was even a four-wheel drive version). For the period from 2001 to 2004, about 4,000 copies of WiLL VS were produced.

1. General practicality

Will VS, built on the basis of the 120th Corolla, can be classified as a "stylish hatchback". But its features are exhausted by the appearance - therefore, one way or another, the conversation will go around unusual design solutions.

The model was produced for only 3 years (April 2001 - April 2004), and not the largest series, so a fair amount of "exclusivity" is guaranteed to its owners. And in the same way, problems are guaranteed in everything related to bodywork or optics, and the rest of the spare parts will not gather dust on the shelves of any store. Can I order a new original from Japan? It is possible, but it is not difficult to use this method here and Bentley with Ferrari - pay and wait.

The single base Voltz sold even less in the domestic Japanese market, but ... It is still popular in the states under the name Toyota Matrix / Pontiac Vibe. Therefore, in terms of maintainability and the availability of non-original spare parts, Voltz / Matrix is preferable.

The fact that the price tag for used Will VS is immensely overpriced is a separate conversation. In terms of cost, it surpasses the right-hand drive models of a higher class, comes close to real SUVs and jeeps, and what’s there - even to new LHD 120 Corolla. Sometimes it’s even funny: in Japan, the new Will VS has always cost the same as the new Corolla in a similar design, without requiring a “surcharge for design”, and we are asked for it almost one and a half times more than for a Corolla. It is not surprising that when choosing Will, there is no question of adequacy - everything is decided only by spontaneous emotions.

2. Engine and transmission

What is in the range of engines? The standard set is civilian 1ZZ-FE with 1NZ-FE and charged 2ZZ-GE. Of course, our "racers" are trying to grasp exactly the last option - "190 horses, but on the handle - I'll do it all."

On the issue of its reliability and durability, we repeat: 2ZZ-GE in this regard is simply trash and we categorically do not advise "our" to take it.

Well, if we talk about dynamics, then 8.5 seconds to hundreds on a mechanical box is the upper limit of the capabilities of a charged Will VS. Therefore, it is necessary to warn fans in advance about the columns of defeated German cars: civilian 323i and C280, Golf and A4 with 1.8T will be even more or less equal rivals for the 2ZZ-GE. But you can "tear" serious cars or powerful versions on Will VS only "in a dream".

Nothing surprising happened in the chassis - it's still the same Corolla 120 with stiffer struts. The front is MacPherson strut, and the rear of the 2WD models is the former dependent suspension on a torsion beam. Therefore, what kind of "perfect sports handling" is there - don't tell me ...

The 2ZZ-GE motor is offered only complete with front-wheel drive, but in vain - the V-Flex 4WD scheme, of course, is far from ideal, but for a powerful engine it would be of help. In this regard, a version with a more reliable 1ZZ-FE, a multi-link rear suspension and at least some kind of 4WD looks much more interesting.

3. Salon and interior

Since personal feelings of internal dimensions are rather subjective, we will back them up with data from the catalog (length * width * height):

Will VS1830*1405*1185
Corolla 1101815*1425*1200
Corolla 1201925*1430*1230
Voltz1935*1445*1305
Axela1825*1435*1210

Unbelievable, but true - Will VS is even smaller than the already cramped 110th Corolla - both in width and height - it is not without reason that potential buyers who dreamed of Will VS often run away from it after the very first real fitting. Yes, and the rear passengers were offended - not only did they have to sit "in a deaf cave", they also left no more legroom than in the VW Pointer. Against the background of the claustrophobic Will VS, the Corolla 120 (really decent in terms of capacity) pleases, but the Voltz / Matrix in general may seem like a machine of a higher class.

The trunk of the Will VS is far from the smallest, but due to the fanciful shape of the rear part of the body, its opening is artificially high and narrowed. Therefore, the cargo compartment of the Voltz is nicer and more useful.

The external and internal design of Will VS are in harmony - both are not aesthetically pleasing, but the interior is unpleasant almost in detail.

It would be nice if Toyota couldn’t make regular steering wheels at all, but Voltz has a completely normal steering wheel - where does this squalor come from on Will VS?

An asymmetric torpedo with a displaced air conditioner remote control and a gloomy panel make a depressing and depressing impression. They say that such a design is futuristic ... Is it in the style of "the world of the future after a nuclear war"? This darkness especially stands out against the background of the bright interior of an ordinary Corolla. Dark upholstery and poor rough plastic deprive Japanese cars of their inherent special charm, and the optional "leather interior" can not always correct the situation.

Apparently the Will VS automatic transmission selector is stylized as an aviation throttle. But what a hole he walks! The skewed tunnel of the front console was clearly developed by a stoned designer. Not to mention that it is too large (even with the all-wheel drive version) and artificially high - to create a cockpit effect and increase cramping. Compared to it, even the Voltz console is the height of elegance.

Screaming red-orange lights are just variations on the theme of European sports cars and VAG cars. It's a pity the Japanese haven't been told when it's really appropriate to use it, so the owner of the Will VS is doomed to constantly irritate his brain with acidic dashboard lights.

The instrument cluster is horrendous. And gamma, of course, but mostly - unreadable circular digitization. Although the world's best experts in ergonomics have repeatedly proven and shown that this is not the way to do it.

But when it comes to sales in the foreign market, the Japanese still listen to the opinion of adequate people. It is enough to put a very poisonous combination of Voltz and Matrix devices nearby.

Visibility to the rear hemisphere of the Will VS is probably the worst of all passenger Toyotas. Both the shamefully small area of glazing and the shape of the rear interfere.

4. Body and exterior

The only nice view of Will VS is from a 3/4 front view. From here, the car seems calmly modern and swift, but if you walk around it ...

The stern looks frankly heavy. A disproportionate excess of metal and plastic can only be disguised with a dark color scheme, but it’s better for a light car not to turn its back to the public.

They say that Will VS has no analogue in appearance. If we take the degree of rejection as a defining feature, then we really have to look for serial analogues. But if we are talking about the similarity of stylistic decisions, then Voltz / Matrix on the same base is very close, but just a few different details made the car quite proportional and pretty, even with some claim to the title of SUV (a la Outlander).

Yes, Will VS turned out to be a car ... "stylish". If earlier things were called by their proper names, now, as in the story with the "king's dress", it is customary to frown, but instead of "ugly" say "stylish" - so as not to offend the owners of such a miracle of technology. In general - an amateur design.

5. Meaning

Usually the reason for purchasing a Will VS is characterized by the quote "I want to be a non-intrinsic original, but there is not enough money for a Maserati."

For those who want not only to please themselves, but to splurge with the help of this car, counting on admiring glances and sighs, it is worth recalling - even on a charged right-hand drive stool there is nothing to catch in the city, where there is enough Machines, including new, modern and really beautiful. And the owner of a far from new, but really legendary car, is more respected than the owner of another brainchild of the Japanese automobile industry, thoughtlessly rushing through our streets. Moreover, here a fresh right-hand drive car with a "claim for show-off" traditionally gives out in its owner a native of the "Far Eastern" regions ...

By the way, speaking of Will's "show-off", many people confuse this property (the desire to arouse respect, admiration and envy) with "shocking" (the desire to surprise and shock). After all, the close attention of others does not always mean admiration. To check this, it is enough to go out into the street in a negligee - attention is provided, but respect is unlikely. It's the same with Will VS - if shocking is needed, then it will fit just right, but most often the attitude here will be skeptical: "Look what a freak ... oh, he's also right-handed!"

6. Analog?

It just so happened that the right-hand drive community is at least 3-5 years behind the times (due to duties and prices). Therefore, for people who are accustomed to the calm and inexpressive design of Japanese women of the 90s, Will VS really seems to be the "aircraft of the future." But we have the whole automotive world before our eyes and it is easy to see that its design is by no means unique - it has been on sale for several years new Japanese car with similar shapes. We are talking about the Mazda 3 / Axela.

Many people like the aggressive front of the Will VS - but try to find radical differences in the decisions of the two manufacturers. Toyota lines are sharper, but they are also much simpler.

The fact that strictly full-face Mazda looks much more expressive than Toyota is beyond doubt.

The details of the design of the driver's seat are quite identical (except that Mazda also offers bright interiors), but the familiarity of the Mazda is to the liking of a much larger number of people than the exotic Will VS - if they are still not embarrassed by the tight dimensions and poisonous lights.

To solve the problems of visibility and comfort of the cabin with similar external contours and modest internal dimensions, Mazda is at its best.

It is easy to see that the Will VS looks advantageous only in its two darkest colors, but the light car turns into an absolutely inexpressive "gray mouse", losing even to an equally nondescript gray Mazda.

And it would be nice if we were comparing cars of a completely different class and price level - but no, the differences in money between these cars are small. Especially considering the fact that Will VS is at least three years old, right-hand drive, worn and often beaten "pig in a poke", while Mazda is just a new, warranty, fairly reliable and, by the way, also formally Japanese car.

Therefore, the desire of the owners of Will VS to stand out radically from the crowd is by no means doomed to good luck. For the initiated, it will always be an uncomfortable version of the Corolla, for the uninitiated - some strange variation on the theme of a good, but quite familiar Mazda 3.

7. Resume

Let's put two similar single-platform cars side by side - Voltz and Will VS ...
- Practicality: Voltz looks better due to its left-hand drive counterpart and a more comfortable trunk.
- Engine and chassis: in this part of the car, they are structurally the same, but Voltz wins due to higher ground clearance.
- Reliability: the same.
- Spacious interior: Voltz is definitely better.
- Interior: Voltz is definitely better.
- Exterior: Voltz is better.

What is WillVS? Mutilated inside and out Corolla - nothing more. A practical person will buy a Corolla Wagon (Fielder) with simple, unpowered engines. Impractical and love to rock - take Corolla Hatchback (Allex, Runx, Fielder) with 2ZZ-GE. If someone likes a semi-SUV on the same base, Matrix (Voltz) is at his service. For those who have sunk into an unusual design, there is a Mazda 3. But Will VS seems to be of no use to a normal person ...
