Steering and suspension

The Roomster model is positioned by the manufacturer as economical to maintain. Therefore, the high ground clearance of a minivan is combined with the simplest chassis scheme:

The debut of the Škoda Roomster concept car took place at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003. The serial version was put into production two years and five months later. Compared to its own concept, the appearance of the Roomster has not changed too much, but on the technical side, the new minivan has become an achievement of Skoda engineers.

Exterior design and body

Like the prototype, the Skoda Roomster has a rather interesting appearance. Opinions differ about its attractiveness, because the combination of a smooth front end of a car and an angular rear looks very unusual. Much more interesting are the technical characteristics of the Rapid body. Its dimensions are as follows: length - 4214 millimeters, width - 1684 millimeters, and height - 1607 millimeters. The dimensions of the wheelbase compared to the concept have changed to a smaller side and amount to 2608 millimeters. Such compactness provides convenience of maneuvering on city streets and does not limit the internal space of the car.

Interior, cabin equipment and luggage compartment

The outwardly compact dimensions of the Skoda Roomster do not convey the interior space of the cabin. The high ceiling and large windows create a feeling of light and space for all passengers of the Škoda Roomster. It looks especially impressive in combination with a panoramic glass roof, which can be installed as an option. The geometric construction of the cabin is also very competent. The driver's and front passenger's seats are positioned high enough to provide a wide viewing angle. There are no blind spots in the area of ​​the A-pillars, despite their sufficient breadth.

The main trump card of the Skoda Roomster is located in the rear of the cabin. The proprietary VarioFlex system allows you to individually transform the three rear row seats as you like: move forward and backward, fold and remove completely. This guarantees both convenience for all passengers and increased load capacity. The minimum volume of the luggage compartment of the Skoda Roomster is 450 liters. This is more than enough to accommodate the bags you need for a short trip. If this volume is not enough, you can always fold the backs of the rear seats or remove them from the passenger compartment: then the trunk increases to an impressive 1810 liters.

Line of power units

For the new minivan, Skoda engineers provided a fairly modest range of engines. There are only two of them: a 1.4-liter petrol with 86 horsepower and a 1.6-liter petrol with 105 horsepower. They are complemented by 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmissions. One of the most interesting modifications is the Skoda Roomster with a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine and a manual gearbox. The maximum torque of such an engine is 153 N / m. Skoda Roomster of this modification accelerates to 100 kilometers per hour in 11.3 seconds and reaches speeds of up to 183 kilometers per hour. Of course, the characteristics are not the most outstanding, but for a family-oriented minivan, this is more than enough. In addition, the manual gearbox allows you to control the engine speed, accelerating with the utmost efficiency.

The entire line of power units of the model complies with the EURO-4 environmental standard.

Should I mess with this used "house" on wheels?

The Roomster has three "rooms" - the first row of seats for the driver and navigator, the second is a purely passenger "room", and the third compartment is for cargo. The first ones are even separated by an appropriate design: the glazing area of ​​the front doors is larger than the rear ones - the lower window sill lines are located on different "floors". Someone likes such a peculiar appearance, but, on the contrary, repels someone.

For better visibility for rear passengers, the second row of seats is located above the front. Thanks to the high body, not only tall people with a hat on their heads can be accommodated inside, but also overall loads - for example, a bicycle, an assembled baby carriage, a bedside table, etc. space depending on the needs (see photo). The luggage compartment (530/1780 l) and carrying capacity (525 kg) are among the largest among the "classmates". Thanks to these features, Roomster outperforms many of its competitors in terms of versatility.

Family ties

The car is built on the same platform as the B-class models of the VW concern: Skoda Fabia, VW Polo, Seat Ibiza and Cordoba. Roomster is represented by three versions: regular, commercial passenger-and-freight - Praktic (pictured on the right) and pseudo-off-road - Roomster Scout (pictured on the left), the latter belongs to the exotic category.

Roomster has no problems with corrosion resistance. Over time, on older cars, the limit switches built into the door locks may fail (the ECU “does not see” the opening and closing of the door), the power windows and their key block located on the driver’s door may be disturbed (see “Weaknesses”).

Inside, Skoda connoisseurs will easily recognize the dashboard borrowed from the Fabia. The interior of the "civilian" versions is made of quality materials. Compared to them, the plastic finishing of Praktic “pies” is harder and cheaper for the sake of their commercial and budgetary orientation. They also have worse sound insulation, there is no lining of the rear of the cabin and glazing of the rear side windows, often there is a metal partition behind the front seats.

The stock of legroom in the gallery of “civilian” versions is enough for a comfortable ride even for tall people, but only small passengers will be comfortable sitting together, and the high and wide central floor tunnel interferes with those in the middle.

The rear seats are separate, both the backs and the pillows are folded, the angle of inclination of the backs is regulated in them, and the outer ones also move back / forward. If you remove the middle chair, the two extreme ones can be rearranged closer to the center, getting more room in the shoulders.

The Roomster trunk is one of the largest among competitors: 530/1780 liters versus 280/437/1330 liters for the Nissan Note and 335/1175 for the Ford Fusion. All rear seats can be removed from the passenger compartment.

Small - harmful!
In Ukraine, the most common petrol Roomster. Under the hood of "civilian" versions, units of 1.4 and 1.6 liters are more common, and commercial Praktic - 1.2 liters, as well as a turbodiesel - 1.4 liters. The last two are 3-cylinder, while the "gasoline" 1.4 and 1.6 liters are 4-cylinder.

The timing of 1.2 and 1.6 liter engines is driven by a chain, and 1.4 liter engines by a belt, which must be changed along with the rollers every 80 thousand km.

More problems were found in the most modest unit. The weak point of 1.2 liter engines manufactured before 2010 is the timing chain, it can stretch up to 100 thousand km, so the condition of this unit must be checked regularly (the chain should be changed along with the gears). Otherwise, there is a risk of chain slippage and, as a result, a fatal meeting of valves with pistons. Fortunately, today there are spare parts for the overhaul of 1.2 liter engines (previously they were considered disposable). After 2010, the chain was strengthened, and it began to serve longer. In addition, this unit is afraid of starting “from the pusher” - at the same time, the timing chain may slip and the valves meet the pistons (the chain tensioner, due to lack of oil pressure, does not provide its proper tension). The 1.2 liter engine is sensitive to temperature conditions - if you do not let it warm up and start moving, it can fill the candles with fuel (manifested by a plume of smoke from the exhaust system, unstable operation, engine shutdown).

On both "chain" motors, about 100 thousand km, oil can leak from under the timing chain side cover.

The weak point of all units is the wiring harness in the engine compartment (near the battery), over time the wires harden and break. Failures of individual ignition coils and clogging of the crankcase gas recirculation valve were noted (idle speed floats, oil is squeezed out from under the dipstick). Coolant may leak through the temperature sensor on the radiator (requires replacement of a leaky gasket).

KP - hassle-free

All Roomsters are front-wheel drive, most of them equipped with a manual gearbox. Versions with Tiptronic automatic transmission are rare and are equipped only with the most powerful 1.6 liter engine.

Both units have proven themselves to be problem-free, no characteristic malfunctions have been identified in them. The hydraulic clutch is also reliable. According to factory requirements, the oil in the manual gearbox is designed for the entire service life, and in the automatic gearbox it must be changed every 100 thousand km.

What's creaking?

The Roomster chassis is moderately rigid and, together with a rather informative steering equipped with an electric hydraulic booster, provides the car with good stability and controllability - even despite the high body, there are no unpleasant rolls during sharp maneuvers.

Structurally, it is similar to the Fabia: an independent McPherson is used in front, and a semi-independent, with a torsion beam, in the back. A characteristic weak point of the suspensions is the support bearings of the front struts, they can begin to creak already at 30 thousand km. The rest of the suspension is quite durable. The stabilizer bushings can last about 60 thousand km, and the struts - up to 100 thousand km. Ball bearings and front silent blocks of the front levers, as well as the "gum" of the rear beam, go 150-200 thousand km. The rear silent blocks of the front levers until 2008 served only about 40 thousand km, but later they were modernized, increasing the resource to 80 thousand km. True, it is often difficult to replace them - the clip of the rear silent blocks is fastened with metal bolts to the aluminum subframe, and over time the bolts boil strongly, and when unscrewed they easily break.

As practice has shown, the steering is generally reliable, but it can still give a surprise in the form of a load sensor failure in the electric power steering system or breaking the wiring of its connection. As a result, the amplifier does not work. At the same time, the steering rods can last at least 100 thousand km, and the tips even longer.

Most versions are equipped with disc mechanisms for all wheels (with the exception of the basic 1.2-liter modifications, which have drum brakes at the rear). During operation, the “drums” turned out to be more demanding - on average, every 60 thousand km they require preventive cleaning. A signal for this will be a creak when braking.

Weak spots

Wiring on old cars can be disturbing - wires are broken in the harness between the doors and the body pillars (lifts, mirror drive do not work), as well as in the engine compartment (near the battery).

The weak point of the front suspension is the thrust bearings of the front struts, which can begin to creak after 30 thousand km.

The glass lifters may also not work due to the failure of the buttons in the key block on the driver's door.

Possible malfunction of the electric windows-lifts - when the glass is closed, it then goes down by itself.

Roomster chose because I needed a versatile and functional car. I built a dacha on my “house” - I delivered a wide variety of building materials and cargoes, from my mother-in-law I often transport agricultural products - I loaded about 500 kg into the Roomster! It is also convenient on a long journey - you don’t get tired behind the wheel. The 1.6 liter engine is very playful. Two years ago, I scratched the back door and the threshold to the metal, and the paint chipped off the rear wing in several places - there is still no corrosion there.

I do not like

I can criticize Skoda Roomster for shifting gears not too clearly - it happens that you don’t always immediately get into the necessary gear. I wanted to install a towbar on the car, but I had to abandon this idea - the branded part is too expensive, and if you install a non-original one, you will have to cut the rear bumper.
