The car was assembled at the same factories as the previous modification, until the company's branch in Bratislava opened in 1999, which became the second most productive after German factories.
As of 2000, a total of over 6,500,000 Polos have been assembled. In 2001, the fourth generation Polo was presented in Frankfurt. By the way, this happened on September 11, the day of the terrorist attack in New York. In 2009, the fifth generation Polo made its debut at the Geneva auto show, which was made in the company's new corporate style and for some time became one of the most discussed cars in the world. In 2010, Polo was recognized as the safest in Europe.
In 2000, the production of Kia Rio began, which was supposed to impose worthy competition on the Volkswagen Polo. Looking ahead, we note that he succeeded, but he still could not surpass his opponent. So, the debut version of the model was intended for implementation in South America. The name itself confirms this fact. But high demand on the car forced to expand the sales market, and Rio began to deliver to Europe. Finally, we come to the most interesting, but at the same time, the most difficult part of the comparison from the point of view of objectivity. It is not an easy task to oppose the “stuffing” of cars, but it is even more difficult to find similar modifications of cars. Fortunately, in 2017, the German and Korean company pleased the public with the release of the next updates to their cars. It is their 1.6-liter modifications that we will oppose today.
So, both cars are built on front-wheel drive “bogies”. Another thing that Polo and Rio have in common is the same type of transmission, the role of which is played by a six-speed automatic transmission.
Given the fact that both models are equipped with engines with the same volume, their power differs markedly. For example, the Rio power unit is capable of producing 123 horsepower, and this is as much as 18 "horses" more than the German opponent. Naturally, this also affected the indicators of dynamism. Acceleration time from zero to hundreds of "Korean" - 11.2 s, and Polo - 12.1 s. Of course, these results cannot be called phenomenal, but, as for a small class, they are quite good.
The most surprising fact is that even though the engine of a Korean car is more powerful, it is more economical. Medium - 6.4 liters, which is 0.6 liters less than the opponent.
In respect of overall dimensions the situation is as follows: the Rio body is 7 mm shorter than the Polo, but at the same time 5 mm higher than it. The wheelbase is also longer for the Korean car - 2570 mm versus 2552 mm. However, the clearance is higher for the "German" - 170 mm versus 160 mm. Also, Rio is as much as 77 kg lighter than its today's counterpart.
