Previously, Picanto did not have a cross-version, but the growth in popularity of SUVs in Europe prompted Kia marketers to launch their smallest model on the market in a conditionally off-road wrapper. The new modification is called X-Line and will be available at European Kia dealers in the fourth quarter of this year. It is clear that driving through the fields on such a machine is not worth even dreaming of - crossover in this case is nothing more than styling, although the ground clearance of the X-Line was nevertheless increased just in case to 156 mm (15 mm more than the standard hatchback). The lower perimeter of the body and the wheel arches are protected by plastic lining, thick plastic moldings appeared on the doors, and in the bumpers there are silver linings that go under the bottom, imitating power protection (they, of course, are also made of plastic).
Salon - the same as that of conventional hatchbacks in rich trim levels, but complemented by original "cheerful" color inserts. Only one power unit has been announced so far - a gasoline 1.0-liter T-GDI "turbo engine" (100 hp) in combination with a 5-speed manual. Drive - only on the front wheels.

The Korean manufacturer has announced details of a new crossover modification of its smallest model, the Kia Picanto X-Line, which will make its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in a week. The new member of the Picanto family will go on sale in the European market in the fourth quarter of this year.
The X-Line version differs from the standard Picanto in a 15 mm increase in ground clearance - up to 156 mm, which also improves visibility for the driver. In addition, the cross-version has become the most powerful model of the family, as it received a new gasoline one-liter turbo engine with direct injection.
The output of the 1.0 T-GDI engine is 100 hp. (at 4,500 rpm) and 172 Nm of torque (at 1,500 - 4,000 rpm). In this configuration, the cross-compact Picanto X-Line is capable of accelerating from zero to 100 km / h in 10.1 seconds. The average fuel consumption is 4.5 liters per 100 kilometers.
The appearance of the Kia Picanto X-Line is characterized by a signature “tiger nose” grille, reinforced crossover-style bumpers with metal-like underbody protection front and rear, and an unpainted plastic body kit around the perimeter of the body.
It is already known that the X-Line version will be sold on the Russian market. A cross-modification of a small hatchback will reach our country in 2018.

The new Picanto X-line, which borrowed many details of the exterior decor from the GT-Line version, pleases with a fresh, reckless and even somewhat aggressive exterior design. From the front, the new Kia can be recognized by its expressive headlights, a compact radiator grille with contrasting horizontal shading, a solid bumper with developed air intakes and round spotlights installed in special niches.

The modest dimensions of the Picanto body do not allow passengers to equally comfortably accommodate in any of the five seats. If the front seats are quite hospitable to tall riders, then behind tall people it will be frankly cramped. The trunk volume of the "baby" Kia, of course, is also small - the standard 255 liters when folding the rear backrests can be transformed into a maximum of 1010 liters.

If in certain European markets in the arsenal of a hatchback there is a 1.0 T-GDI turbo engine with a return of 100 hp. (172 Nm), then in Russia such a unit is not available. The fuel performance of the X-Line version will be approximately the same as that of other Picanto modifications with a 1.2-liter engine and 4-speed automatic transmission. The suspension of the all-terrain Kia Picanto is built according to the classic scheme for the model: an independent structure with MacPherson struts is installed at the front, and a semi-independent torsion beam at the rear. KIA Picanto X-Line was purchased with a 1.0 liter turbo engine. I needed a car with which I can feel comfortable not only in the city, but also outside it - I like to get out into nature. And the Korean compact is quite suitable for this role.
Currently, the mileage is estimated at 14 thousand kilometers. It is already possible to draw the first conclusions about ownership.
Strengths:

- High maneuverability.
- Stylish appearance.

Weak sides:
- Complete lack of soundproofing (in my opinion).
- Uncomfortable front seat.
Of course, Picanto X Line can hardly be considered a full-fledged crossover. The maximum that I allowed myself on it was to drive along a country road. But, in general, I was satisfied with such an omnidirectional model. In all other respects, the compact is also pleasing so far, which inspires optimism.
Test Drive
Appearance
KIA Picanto X-Line 2018 is perhaps the most spectacular Picanto of all on the market. “Off-road” paraphernalia made the compact body very aggressive, and even the GT Line version looks somehow inexpressive against the background of the novelty.
The “evil” look was achieved due to pseudo-metallic silver linings on massive bumpers, a body kit made of black plastic, a cellular radiator grille with yellow inserts, moldings, an interesting rear diffuser, and wheel arch extensions. The spoiler on the tailgate makes the profile of the car swift, while the increased ground clearance does not interfere with this at all.
Interior decoration
The interior of the Picanto X Line differs slightly from the standard modifications, and the most noticeable thing that can be observed here is the yellow stitching on the controls, yellow patterns on the door armrests-stampings.
However, this does not disappoint, because the interior of the Korean compact is initially very pleasant in all respects: the quality of finishing materials and assembly are acceptable, and the front panel is decorated in a trendy minimalist style.
The strict instrument panel is read perfectly - its digitization is clear and large, and the white backlight provides high contrast. The on-board computer display is small, but very informative and easy to use.
There is no center console as such - the air conditioning control unit is shifted down, closer to the transmission lever, and multimedia is concentrated above the central blower deflectors.
It should be noted that the multimedia entertainment complex has a color touch screen. It displays a navigation map, audio system data, although the projected picture is far from ideal - high-resolution graphics do not shine with detail.
A plump, high-slung driver's seat may not appeal to tall drivers. Otherwise, it is quite good and provides optimal fixation of the body when maneuvering. The rear sofa is expectedly cramped, even for two riders with a height of up to 175 centimeters. But the luggage compartment of 270 liters is quite roomy due to its regular shape (a rectangle without significant protrusions and bulges), and if you fold the rear row of seats, you can achieve a flat floor and a volume of 1010 liters.
Driving properties
The naturally aspirated 1.2-liter power unit is quite suitable for city driving - it demonstrates good acceleration in the medium speed zone and responsiveness when pressing the accelerator. However, driving a car with such an engine is problematic on the highway, because the dynamics after 80 kilometers per hour deteriorate noticeably.
The 1.0-liter turbo engine looks much more versatile, which famously starts from a standstill and is able to quickly complete overtaking. Its fuse is enough for speeds up to 160 kilometers per hour, while the fervent roar constantly provokes to drown the gas pedal to the floor.
However, it is still not worth flirting with high speeds. The reason for this is the weak stability of the car, which manifests itself in the form of yaws.
Moreover, it is problematic to “catch” a fast-moving Picanto on the road because of the uninformative, light steering, and the high center of gravity imposes restrictions when cornering - tangible rolls. But in the normal driving mode, the Korean compact only pleases - it reacts vividly to steering turns and allows you to briskly maneuver in a busy traffic flow.
Suspension with high energy intensity turned out to be short-stroke. Therefore, on bumps, there can be no talk of any smoothness. The car projects in detail every small bump on riders, and when it hits a pothole, its entire body shudders with unpleasant vibrations and shocks. All this makes you be more selective in choosing a route.
Verdict: KIA Picanto X-Line 2019 cannot be attributed to the "SUV" even conditionally. The increased ground clearance does not make a “rogue” out of the Korean compact, but simply allows you to more confidently climb high curbs and overcome tram tracks. Nevertheless, the formed image of a "utilitarian" will attract even more potential buyers to the model and expand its influence in the A segment.
