The Germans do not let the Russian consumer relax. Along with the slow but systematic increase in the price tag for the Volkswagen Polo sedan, the manufacturer constantly “warms up” our motorists by offering trend changes.
The first significant event in the life of the polologists was a closed screening of the updated Kaluga in Moscow in May 2015. Journalists presented a completely new image of the sedan. The precise lines of the body, which are a trademark of the German company, have added to the appearance of solidity. Gone is the naivety of 2010, meet the serious look of a businessman.
The look really became more attractive: LED strips appeared in the headlights around the main lamps, and the “foglights” changed shape. Optionally, future owners of a restyled sedan can purchase bi-xenon headlights. On the front bumper, reliefs were added along the edges near the wheel arches. The new grille improved the three-dimensional effect and added another "rib" to the kit. Now the Volkswagen badge rests on three steel "ribs". The hood was filled with expressive content, talking about the increased class of the sedan.

In profile, the body, which has passed the restyling stage, has retained its former features. Changes included only direction indicators built into the side mirrors, badges on the fenders with the inscription Polo and a redesigned 15-inch wheel pattern. Compact mirrors now have electric folding.
The stern is distinguished exclusively by a new bumper, which now looks much larger and more presentable than on the old version of the “state employee”. A small recess appeared in the lower part, in which brake light repeaters are mounted. Cars chasing the sedan will be able to see the exhaust pipe sticking out from under the bumper. The rear lights also have LEDs.
The resemblance to the Jetta is simply striking. The basic version of the "big brother" is a little short of 900,000 rubles. While the new Polo is approaching the mark of 600,000 rubles. Such a difference in prices cannot but flatter the Kaluga state employees. Therefore, immediately after the release of the first installments in June 2015, its sales immediately jumped - fans have been waiting for a surprise for a long time.
But it turned out that the facelift was just the beginning of a campaign to upgrade the Volkswagen Polo. In November 2015, new power units appeared at the Kaluga plant. Both 1.6-liter CFNA petrols received a fresh serial number - EA211 and a good increase of 5 hp. Now under the hood there are two motors for 90 and 110 hp. Both comply with the Euro-5 standard and have a torque of 155 Nm. The maximum speed for the 90-horsepower “engine” is 178 km / h, for the “senior” - 191 km / h. On a 5-speed "mechanics" you can accelerate to "hundreds" in 11.2 or 10.4 seconds, depending on engine power. With an automatic transmission for 6 ranges, things will not go so quickly - 11.7 seconds.
The plans of the German concern for the Russian market also include a sports version of the Polo sedan with the abbreviation GT. A 1.4-liter turbocharged TSI and a 7-speed DSG “robot” will be prepared for it. The power of the new power plant will reach 125 hp. The Germans promise to equip the rear sedan with disc brakes, as well as install 16-inch alloy wheels. The premiere should take place in 2016. There is no other news on the "athlete" yet.
As for the interior, which has gone through restyling, the interior still retains the Spartan spirit. Ergonomically, pragmatically and soundly, as before. Controls are within walking distance. The meanings of the buttons, which are not too much scattered around the center console, are intuitive even for a novice driver. The fit of the materials is of high quality. Backlash, of course, will declare itself in the future, but this is a traditional problem for all German models.
Internal changes after restyling
It is immediately worth noting, which Polo owners of early versions continuously complained about. The Germans took into account the wishes of Russian fans and laid additional layers of "Shumka" in the engine shield, window seals, front pillars, rear arches and luggage compartment.
In top trim levels, a new one catches the eye, as in sports cars. But even in Highline, the sets of buttons on the spokes for controlling the multimedia system look very concise.
In the "base" of the Volkswagen in the new body, you can find a very good selection of functions. , which have received new upholstery options, can be independently adjusted in height using a manual mechanism. The same goes for the steering column - the angle and reach are selected quite simply. Management facilitates the electric booster. Power windows are installed front and rear. The dashboard has got a new on-board computer screen in black and white design. And ABS and two front airbags are responsible for safety.
The trendline differs from the basic configuration only in the presence of an air conditioner. Therefore, both versions are approximately in the same price category. However, if the initial equipment can only be purchased with a 5-speed manual transmission, then Trendline provides a choice between "mechanics" and "automatic".
Comfortline is already far ahead of the curve. Of course: 15-inch wheels, heated front seats and mirrors, a modern RCD220 system with 4 speakers and MP3 support. The exterior door handles and mirror housings are painted in the same color as the body. The rear sofa can be folded in a ratio of 60:40, making room for a spacious trunk that can hold 460 liters.
The maximum configuration is equipped with only a 110-horsepower engine, and the standard equipment includes a huge range of comfort features. Full power accessories, climate control, front, RCD320 stereo system, Cell fabric upholstery in two shades (black or beige), automatic windows, front and rear parking sensors, as well as a modern “multimedia” with a color display and a set of MirrorLink functions are available here.
In the first quarter of 2016, the updated car received not only the new Savanna yellow, which is ideal for some corporate employees and taxi drivers, but also the AllStar special version, which received a large “winter” option package. Increased battery capacity, more powerful starter, improved wiring of the starting system and cold start of the “engine” at temperatures down to -36 degrees - all this is complemented by the optional Hot Star package, which includes heated windshield, front seats and washer nozzles. Slightly more expensive is the Design Star package, which includes 15-inch Linas alloy wheels, tinted rear windows and security bolts.
Exclusive to AllStar, a new color is offered - Copper Orange. The RCD230 with MP3 support and USB input is already available as standard on the car. All doors have power windows. Alas, there are no changes in technology yet: the updated Polo sedan enters the market with the same 1.6 engine of the EA111 family in two boost levels (85 or 105 hp). The gearbox is a five-speed "mechanics", and for the 105-horsepower version, a six-speed "automatic" is offered.
Meanwhile, related Skoda Rapid liftbacks, which are produced at the same plant near Kaluga, will start installing 1.6 engines of the new EA211 family (90 or 110 hp) from mid-June that meet Euro-5 standards instead of Euro-4. At first, new engines will be imported from Germany, but a motor plant has already been built near Kaluga, where mass production of such aspirated engines will begin in the fall (production volume is up to 150,000 per year). The leadership of the Volkswagen brand decided not to install new-generation imported engines on the Polo sedan, but to wait for the start of their local production. Therefore, by the end of the year, Polo will still have new engines.

The updated Polo has risen in price by about 30-45 thousand rubles. The basic configuration of the Conceptline without air conditioning, which cost 505 thousand rubles, is no more. The gamut is opened by the Trendline version with an 85-horsepower engine for 554,900 rubles - against 523 thousand for a similar pre-styling version. The same sedan with a 105 hp engine. will cost 587,900 rubles, but there will be no more “trendline” with an automatic transmission: now the two-pedal Polo is at least 673,900 rubles for the Comfortline version.
But Polo became the first Volkswagen car, which has a three-year factory warranty (or 100,000 km) instead of the previous two-year (without mileage limit), and a 12-year warranty against through-corrosion of the body. Soon such conditions may appear for other Russian-assembled Volkswagens (these are Jetta and Tiguan).

The modernization of the Polo sedan will not end there. Next year, the GT modification will enter the market: with a 1.4 TSI turbo engine (125 hp), preselective DSG “robot”, 16-inch wheels, disc rear brakes and “sporty” touches in the design. By the way, the related Skoda Rapid is equipped with such a power unit from the very beginning of production.
The rear brakes are still drum brakes, discs will appear next year on the GT version.
A special version for a taxi is also being prepared: with a modified interior trim and a reinforced manual transmission. In addition, the plant in Kaluga plans to change some suppliers. For example, Volkswagen is not averse to abandoning Kama tires - most likely, they will be replaced by Continental tires.
According to the results of five months, Polo sales fell even more than the market: by 40% (to 16,143 cars). During the same time, Kia Rio sank by 13% (33,700 cars, including hatchbacks), Renault Logan - by 15% (16,493 cars of two generations), and the demand for Hyundai Solaris did not change at all (44,455 cars). In addition, the Ford Fiesta enters the market. The upgrades, coupled with an extended warranty, can help Polo edge out the competition, but all these measures should have been taken at least a year ago when the new Logan and updated Solaris entered the market. Now Volkswagen is in the role of catching up - and the Polo will not have an easy life for sure.
The time when designers tried to make cars in the minimum configuration, thereby significantly reducing the cost of them, is long gone. Now many car manufacturers are trying to justify the rather high prices for their products with good interior design and quality parts. The Polo Sedan is also one of those cars. After restyling, he got more chrome in the cabin and on the body, bi-xenon headlights were added. The car warranty has been extended to three years.

The appearance of the German sedan has not changed dramatically. The updated Polo received a new front bumper, front optics and grille, as a result of which it began to resemble the older Jetta model. The rear is much less different. It all came down to installing a new bumper and taillights with slightly modified graphics. And the most expensive versions of the Polo sedan can now be recognized by the chrome bar on the trunk lid.
There are also few changes in the cabin. Only the steering wheel truncated at the bottom and the instrument cluster with modified graphics are striking.
