GAZ-3309 is a popular flatbed truck that has been produced by the Gorky Automobile Plant group since 1994. Over the years of production, the car has undergone some improvements, which also concerned the receipt of modern economical power units, which corresponded to Euro-4 environmental standards.

Of course, a truck does not have excellent cross-country qualities and is designed for use in urban areas, or for freight transport on paved roads in rural areas. All .

Car history

As we have already said, the Lawn 3309 saw the light of day starting in 1994, which means that it belongs to the fourth family of medium-duty trucks of the Gorky Automobile Plant.

The debut cars of this index had a 4-cylinder power unit that ran on diesel fuel. On top of that, the engine was equipped with a turbocharging system and produced 116 horsepower. The volume of the engine was 4.15 liters.

After some time, 3309 began to be produced with another diesel engine, which was also equipped with a turbocharging system, but already had six cylinders and produced as many as 150 horses.

However? three years later (in 1997) the production of such trucks was stopped. This was due to the fact that the GAZ-3309 was considered unprofitable for economic reasons.

After the Gorky enterprise began to be rebuilt, the management decided to improve the cabin. As a result, the cabin of the "Lawn" was significantly changed and began to develop a diesel power unit for the car.

Thanks to the diesel engine, it was possible to get more power while lowering fuel consumption. But in order to make a diesel power unit, the technological staff worked hard.

During development, the company purchased a considerable number of brand new machines and stands. They served as a springboard for engine tests comparing them with gasoline variations. When there was a technological breakthrough, a diesel plant was developed, which received a turbocharging system.

Thanks to such a strong engine, the car could carry a heavy truck quite cheerfully. Following the changes in the appearance of the cab, the designers decided to pay attention to the internal components of the 3309. Even at the start of the 1980s, numerous units of the units were redone, which were installed in the car.

And with the help of many modifications, which affected the suspension, body, engine and transmission, the car became cheaper, but it was able to increase its efficiency.

In addition, repairs, along with maintenance of the machine, have also become much easier with the use of fewer parts. On top of that, due to their reduction, the number of possible breakdowns of various nodes has decreased.

After 2001, the Gorky Automobile Plant began to purchase power units from the Minsk enterprise, which produces engines. From that moment on, a new revival of the model was begun, on which diesel engines MMZ D-245.7 were mounted.

After another 5 years (2006), diesel power units began to be installed on the Gazon, which meet the European environmental standards Euro-2. Two years later, the motors were already able to fit the Euro-3 framework.

The plant also provides for the installation, if desired, of a preheater, which is very necessary on the territory of the Russian Federation. If we talk about the operation of the car, then the GAZ-3309 is considered to be one of the most economical cargo models.

The last improvement was made in the 2000s, when Gorky engineers managed to adapt the Minsk engine to Euro-2 environmental standards. But by the end of the 2000s, the production of vehicles fell sharply. Why?

There are several reasons. One of them is the presence of an outdated design. The model has been produced for 20 years, and the shape of the cab, along with the body, has not changed at all. It is also important that the type of truck is generally not suitable for the current transportation market.

It is clear that few people thought about this in the 1980s, but today it is no longer the 80s, and the level of comfort plays one of the most important roles when choosing a truck.

Appearance

If we talk about the exterior of the GAZ-3309, then it is almost impossible to distinguish a diesel variation from a gasoline one. They differ, perhaps, by the presence of an air intake pipe that runs along the hood and the window pillar of the cab.

With the help of such an element, a diesel car could pass the deepest water barriers, because the air to the power unit came from just such a pipe, which was located at a height of 2 meters. In addition, do not forget about the big wheels and rather high ground clearance.

Petrol truck modification

The successor to the 53rd model received an almost unchanged cabin design. The truck has the same round headlights, a recognizable steel bumper, an oblong hood and a classic metal footrest, which makes it easier for the driver to get into the cabin. Based on the reviews, the design of the truck cab had many flaws.

For example, they often sinned on the wings, which almost always rusted. As a result, they needed to be treated with putty or laying new steel sheets on top of the corroded metal.

However, the bumper itself, as before, is quite massive and durable. With the help of a considerable thickness of metal, it can withstand forces up to several tons.

The driver can, without worrying, fasten the cable to one of the two holes in the bumper and get the car out of almost any swamp in tow. Although, it is worth admitting that the diesel variation of the Lawn almost did not allow it to get stuck even in the deepest and most rough terrain, so often towing was simply not required.

Like all other current trucks, which the Gorky Automobile Plant is engaged in, the “on-board” has acquired an all-metal cab, where there is a simple exterior design.

Moreover, it has straight contours with sharp edges, which are diluted with round optics, a shockproof bumper along with a massive radiator grille. The cabin received a pair of doors with a fairly wide opening. There is also the presence of large glazing, which provides an easy approach to the engine compartment in three directions.

When comparing the interior of the 53rd model and 3309, the latter scored significantly in convenience and design. The most important difference is that plastic parts were used. In addition, the salon of the 53rd model had preferably metal elements, where the dashboard itself can be attributed.

Everything related to the speedometer, tachometer and other informational details, they were left in the same style. The glove box was made with a plastic lid. The thin steering wheel on the GAZ-3309 is represented by a two-spoke, and, as before, received a very massive diameter.

It will not be superfluous to note that models with a diesel power unit were equipped with a hydraulic power steering. At that time, the hydraulic booster was considered a luxury option and it was installed only on the 66th "Gazon" and large-tonnage KamAZ trucks. Of the "conveniences", the design staff equipped the cabin only with hooks for clothes, sun visors and a heater.

Due to the fact that the designers removed the second passenger seat, there was much more free space inside the GAZ-3309, which was very lacking in its predecessor.

The interior saloon floor turned out to be even, as well as the predecessor - GAZ-53. Other changes include the presence of a new seating arrangement, which replaced one continuous wide "sofa". Already in the cabin there is a separate driver and one passenger seat.

Many of the detail designs are more angular, making the car's interior feel a little outdated by today's standards. The last and most important improvement of the cabin allowed the designers to install thermal and noise insulation, which was not even expected in the 53rd model.

"Lawn" 3309 came with several variations of power plants. The most common was MMZ D-245.7E4. It was a four-cylinder, four-stroke, in-line, diesel-fueled engine that had liquid cooling, direct fuel injection, an aftercooler, and turbocharging.

Such a power unit could comply with European environmental standards Euro-4. Its volume was 4.75 liters, which allowed it to produce 125.4 horsepower. This engine weighed about 430 kilograms. For 100 kilometers, the engine consumes about 14.5 liters at a speed of 60 km / h.

A little later, YaMZ-5344, which was produced at a motor company in the city of Yaroslavl, began to be installed on trucks. In terms of design, it was almost similar to the 4.75-liter engine mentioned above, but differed in its own technical parameters.

YaMZ-5344 was a 4.43-liter 134.5-horsepower engine, the compression ratio of which was a solid 17.5. As a separate option, it was possible to install a preheater. The Yaroslavl power unit consumes about 15.5 liters per 100 kilometers at a speed of 60 km / h.

The Gazon was also equipped with an Austrian-made diesel engine, which had an in-line arrangement of cylinders and had an air cooling system. It was a 3.2-liter engine that produced about 150 horses.

The main disadvantage of such a power unit was poor maintainability. Following the worked 200,000 km, the engines were not subject to overhaul.

Transmission

All two motors were synchronized together with a single 5-speed manual synchromesh gearbox, where there was a constant meshing of gears and a single-plate friction dry clutch, which has a hydraulic control.

The leading rear axle was equipped with a bevel gear differential. Interestingly, the manual transmission scheme was drawn not on the switch lever, but on the front panel (in the center, in the form of a small sticker).

Suspension

All modifications, along with complete sets, received a rear-wheel drive layout, and the car itself was built on a solid frame base, where there were dependent spring suspensions front and rear.

One of the priority areas in the design and production of trucks at the Gorky Automobile Plant for seven decades has been the production of medium-duty vehicles. Four million units in hundreds of versions not only allowed the GAZ 53 to take the first line in the popularity rating, but also become the basis for the development of the next generations. Since the end of 1989, the gasoline GAZ 3307 has been mass-produced, and since 1994, the turbodiesel version of the GAZ 3309, which is almost identical in design, has been produced. Externally, the cars look the same. The main difference between the GAZ 3309 and the previous version is the snorkel-air intake located on the left side of the cab. The device helped to ensure diesel engines are clean, free of dust, sand, and even raindrops, significantly increasing their overhaul life. Attempts to install diesel engines on GAZ medium-duty trucks have been made for a long time. As an experimental industrial batch, cars with Japanese HINO power plants were produced, however, due to technical and organizational problems, cooperation with the Japanese corporation was curtailed. A bet was made on domestic diesel engines, which eventually justified itself. In order to maintain positions in the domestic market of medium-duty trucks, it was necessary to prevent a significant increase in the price of the model. Installing engines of foreign assembly, the project significantly increased the cost. As a result of the work, the 3309 model appeared with a whole line of diesel-powered power units.

The GAZ 3309 line of vehicles is widely represented by utility vehicles as garbage trucks, special vehicles for cleaning roads in winter and summer, and watering tankers. Complete with isothermal vans, GAZ 3309 is often used when transporting food products, furniture, building materials, in water delivery services, etc. Dump trucks based on GAZ 3309 are used to deliver bulk cargo when laying highways, building bridges and buildings, delivering crops to processing plants. Vehicles with an extended wheelbase are equipped with special devices for the transportation of non-standard and special cargo (glass, plastic and wooden windows, sheets and blanks for furniture production, etc.). Modifications

Serial production of GAZ 3309 was suspended several times. In 1997, this was due to a drop in demand, in the subsequent delays were associated with re-equipment for new engines. However, the model has stood the test of time. About two dozen different modifications and configurations were produced, and production continues to this day. The main modifications include:

Features and operation

GAZ 3309 is much more comfortable in operation and maintenance compared to previous models. The passenger and driver seats have comfortable high backs with imitation lateral support. The driver's seat is adjustable in the horizontal and vertical direction. To ensure safety, three-point seat belts are installed. The presence of glow plugs in the engine start system makes it easier to start the engine in cold weather. Finally, the GAZ medium-tonnage truck received a power steering, which significantly reduces driver fatigue, especially in conditions of heavy urban traffic. It is no coincidence that it was on the basis of GAZ 3309 that a modern model, distinguished by free forms and the presence of plastic contours, was created, which was called "Dobrynya". If the previously produced medium-tonnage GAZs were far from ideal in terms of exterior, Dobrynya looks excellent against their background. If the GAZ 53 can be called a nondescript "workhorse", then the GAZ 3309 "Dobrynya" is a "pedigreed trotter". High wheel arches, an original grille, fog lights in the bumper niches and an unusual frame for headlights and turn signals give the car a new and recognizable look. The designers did not forget about practicality. The non-metal parts of the cabin are mainly made of fiberglass. Due to its use, the total weight of the machine is reduced, and the elements that are not subject to corrosion serve for many years without losing their appearance. The engine hood cover opens forward, which facilitates access to engine systems and prevents it from opening when hitting a bump or from the oncoming air flow. For the convenience of boarding the car, wide steps are installed, and the driver's seat is equipped with a lever suspension. A completely new solution for GAZ cars of a similar class was the installation of a berth. I bought a used GAZ 3309 from the organization, they carried food on it, the view was quite peppy. He took for his own needs, so to speak, as an au pair. Immediately served, changed oil everywhere, filters, sprayed, bought new batteries, wheels in front, eliminated smudges from the box. In general, in short, it is quite unpretentious, moderately reliable (likes care) and works out at 100%. There was nothing particularly terrible from the breakdowns, since the power steering tube (brewed) burst, by the way, climb everywhere where something rubs against each other, and lay it with rubber, or insulate it in some other way, it will only be a plus for you. Nothing else bad happened to the GAZ 3309. Always started up. Like a tractor. Already sold. From the pros: the consumption is very low - up to 60 km / h it consumed about 15 liters of diesel, if it is heated, then 17-18, but this is the maximum. The chassis is reliable, the main thing is to follow and squirt, it will walk for a very long time. Steering tips (ball) watch if you drive on bad roads. The engine on the GAZ 3309 is actually very frisky, but only 4750 volume. By the way, if you'll choose, then ask what kind of bridge is worth, slow-moving or high-speed, I got a low-speed, 2000 rpm at 80 km / h. But in 5th gear loaded almost all the slides. I did the processing of the cabin and soundproofed it, it became much quieter in the cabin. Of the minuses: hard until you load it, clumsy (you have to turn the steering wheel a lot), but you get used to it, then you don’t notice it. Well, a little noisy. Now I drive a GAZ 3309 elongated 6 meters. I got it not in the best condition, so I changed it in a month and a half: pads, right brake cylinder, brewed radiator. I changed both outboard cardan shafts (on an elongated 3-piece cardan shaft and with 2 outboard ones), bolts of the adapter plate from the cardan to the rear axle, rear wheel nuts, studs. What I didn't like: the rear wheel mounting system. Gearbox from ZIL (the first one only by pressing the second one, if so without a crunch and no matter how many times the clutch is pressed, it is very inconvenient for loaded people in Moscow traffic jams). Shakes in GAZ 3309 very strongly, even on small bumps. Lack of a regular cigarette lighter or 12 volt power supply (I don’t smoke myself, but I had to bring the cigarette lighter to charge the phone and other things with separate wires from one of the two batteries). Small inversion of the wheels (turn around on the spot as for a truck or movements in 10). Headlights (do not really adjust, look at the sky). Fuel tank (diesel, consumption 16 liters in mixed, tank only 100 liters). Cabin (wind blows all over and very noisy). Pros: in general, not very high diesel consumption. There are few competitors in cargo transportation (body 6 meters, carrying capacity 5 tons). It is quite maintainable (it's not very difficult to crawl somewhere). Low cabin (you can drive somewhere where there are height restrictions). Bonnet layout (no need to lift the cab).

After, all the work, except for electricians, was carried out by himself. The body was the first to go into consumption - the floor immediately began to break under a load of 600 kg, I had to sheathe the floor and walls with plywood, enough for 2 years, I don’t need more. Then the generator burned out, then the starter bendix stuck and it also burned out. Almost all the bulbs have already changed, some twice. The brake pipe was frayed, the air pipe twice, the power steering hose pipe three times. A lot of things still had to be done, and it is necessary to finish up to normal work, and most importantly, there is always something to do in your free time. The bugs have already gone around the cabin, both at the joints and out of the blue, for another two years there will be holes, the body of the GAZ 3309 will rot even faster. You can talk about comfort separately, one gets the feeling that the cabin was specially thought out in such a way as to pound the driver so that he could not at least somehow lie down to rest, so that he would be very uncomfortable there in everything. The turning angle is very large, it is generally unrealistic to drive around the yards. The suspension is very stiff at first, out of habit, at the end of the day, the back hurts.

Advantages : acceptable price. Durable suspension.

Flaws : poor quality. There is no reliability.

I took the car new, the mileage at the moment is 260 thousand km. For 3 years of work on the GAZ 3309 went through a lot of things. Almost immediately I changed the kingpin, the holes on the bronze half-rings did not match with the grease fittings, the generator burned, the starter burned more than once, in winter the power steering sucks, it is fixed on the front beam and the oil sticks on the go. The car starts the turn very late. The brakes on the GAZ 3309 are very bad when you go loaded. Heating heats only on the go and preferably with a load, and if you spend the night on the road only with the radiator closed and under three blankets (more than 40 degrees the engine does not warm up). This is if there is a bed. In general, it is easier to spend the night in a hotel than to burn diesel fuel. Noise isolation and tightness of the GAZ 3309 cabin leave much to be desired. There is little comfort: the steering wheel is not adjustable in one position, there is nothing to say about softness - it is very tough. Bolts-planetaries of the rear axle blew off the ambassador of 150 thousand km. The car did not see overloads, mainly from 2.5 to 3.5 tons. It’s a complete disaster with light devices - the bulbs are constantly on. Radiator lugs are constantly falling off from shaking and much more. Brake cylinders often fail. In general, GAZ 3309 was originally designed to work in agriculture.
