My colleague, commenting on the video test, does not like the new design, as the owner of the Octavia N1 of the Kaluga assembly, I am not so categorical - I like the new style of the Volkswagen group models and Octavia does not deviate from it, evolving its image. Now the radiator grille is lowered a couple of cm down, and the headlights are placed a little wider in combination with the edges of the body.

The very wet sky in the south of Russia during the days of our test seemed to be asking for bright colors from cars, but no, Octavia is offered mainly in gray and white. By the way, mostly whites ride around Prague, not counting the yellow ones in taxis. I would have taken cherry, but it was in great demand, even such journalistic demand is already a reason to buy more cheerful paints for the conveyor. But this is sore for me, because my Octavia N1 of the Kaluga plant is steel-gray.

We take two white Octavias: a liftback and a station wagon, equipped with all sorts of technical options. It remains to quickly reload the route from the tablet to the navigator, and you can go. What kind of motors do we have?

Octavia with a TSI turbo engine is a dynamic and tuning platform. Even 1.4 TSI (150 hp) is able to push into a chair, not to mention 1.8 TSI (180 hp).

Together with both, a seven-speed preselective with two DSG clutches can work; for all-wheel drive versions, I repeat, a 6-speed “wet” DSG is installed.

In the maximum Laurin & Klement series, if desired, it is possible to snatch the “mechanics”, and the six-speed robot is put on all-wheel drive versions of the model. Now these are sold in Russia. And this is one of the innovations of restyling. True, the price gap is noticeable - the 4 × 4 versions are imported from the Czech Republic, and not produced in Russia, as is the maximum configuration of Laurin & Klement (from 1,853,000 rubles). However, their share on Russian roads will most likely be insignificant. Much more popular will be cars with atmospheric 1.6 MPI, equipped with mechanics (from 940,000 rubles) or a six-speed automatic (namely, automatic, with a torque converter - from 1,003,000 rubles). From time to time, turbocharged Octavias will also be bought, mainly by those who plan to make an even faster car out of a practical Octavia.

The salon has been known globally since 2013. In an expensive configuration, excellent ergonomics are complemented by excellent premium finishing materials. In the photo there is a car with the maximum Colambus multimedia complex without buttons. In addition to it, there are also simpler versions with buttons, but smaller screens. Like the recently introduced, the grown-up Octavia also reigns in the dogma of control through a touch screen and a reliable connection to the Internet. It is not surprising that the Czechs did it in a similar way to the parent concern VW and finally said goodbye to the large Columbus navigator with mechanical buttons.

From ergonomic quibbles: inconvenient control of the on-board computer (you need to study it once) and the complete absence of buttons on the top Colambus multimedia system, which is why the screen is always imprinted, although the screen quality itself, responses to commands and menu logic are on top.

Now there are no clues for a searching finger - his own or a passenger - who would like to mute the radio or change the scale of the map. If a wave on the pavement gets under the wheels, the music can play not quieter, but louder, because. the finger slips in the wrong place. However, the screen resolution is high, and the backlight successfully fends off the side beam of the sun.

And ... the exterior mirrors, which are also beveled at the edges, slightly hide the view, although after restyling Octavia can be equipped with blind spot monitoring systems, and most importantly, a rear-view camera washer system.

The softest plastic in the cabin with a pleasant texture, a steering wheel with delicate leather, chrome fittings in optimal quantities and magnificent seats with memory of the Ergo series. The latter pleases not only the eye, but also directly affects the degree of driving comfort. For hundreds of kilometers, they did not get tired, neither the neck nor the back. The relief of the chair perfectly holds the mass and distributes the load.

The trunk is huge, very convenient for loading cabinets and refrigerators (I checked it myself). It's just a pity, throwing back the seat, you won't get a flat floor.

The first impressions of the 150-horsepower engine are positive, it spins up willingly and quickly, while giving out 250 Nm of torque, without being gluttonous. The 7-speed dry clutch DSG box that works with it is still under suspicion, let's see how the new Skoda Octavia 2017 will restore its reputation.

Less worrisome is the wet-clutch 6-speed DSG on our all-wheel-drive version. But even in this case, the transmission, at least in our car, did not satisfy 100%: a gasoline engine that produces 180 hp from 1.8 liters of working volume, although it distributes its traction without objection between all four wheels , but makes him wait too long to figure out the gears in the box.

Skoda-Octavia-2017: Prices have moved up, the contents of the configurations have changed, new options and modifications have appeared.

A bit of sportiness in the 180-horsepower version is added by a switch (Eco, Normal, Comfort, Sport, Individual), which for the first time also affects the suspension via the DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control) system.

Sharpening the senses and driving through a few hatches instead of a stand, we managed to notice a subtle difference between the Comfort and Sport modes.

Sprints on straight stretches of road were successful on a powerful motor without problems, except for the mentioned delays in shifts, but they require an increase in speed. The turbocharged four wakes up again at 4500 rpm to a new life, while acceleration between 3.500 and 4.000 rpm is somewhat sluggish. It is only at 6,200 rpm that the limit is reached and the DSG switches up a step.

Driving with a TSI turbo engine improves the mood, of course, also when refuelling. After 100 kilometers done, the device showed an average consumption of 8.6 liters.

With a declared curb weight (including the driver) of 1450 kg, the appetite is in line with expectations, although the factory promises only 6.6 liters in the combined cycle, and it will not be difficult to get all 10 l / 100 km using the gas pedal.

When setting up behavior on the road, Skoda engineers focused on safety.

At the heart of the new Octavia is still the modular MQB platform. Depending on the engine, a semi-dependent beam or an independent multi-link is used in the rear axle. On the road, the difference between them is noticeable only when cornering very quickly on uneven pavement. If you do not set records, then the beam will completely satisfy the average driver. Even such a configuration will please with perfect controllability, and given the simpler design, it will warm the soul and lower maintenance costs.

In whatever mode we tried to push the Octavia to its physical limits, we were always ahead of the ESP.

The chassis itself is set up mainly for smooth asphalt, but on regional roads with irregularities of small and medium calibers, Octavia does not give up. There is enough energy intensity - you can rush along a chipped or dirt country road. Asian competitors usually don't allow this. Although the ride is rough.

The one who disables the ESP will, as expected, get a car that blows the front end in fast curves. Those wishing to drive with a rear axle skid should opt for the 14mm lower and whiter powerful RS.

How updated the new Skoda Octavia 2017 can only be felt by creating your ideal Octavia in the configurator or at an authorized dealer. The main thing is that regardless of the degree of equipment, Octavia remains a sophisticated design. Its formula of thoroughbred driving inclinations, wide range of possible equipment and practicality in this segment at the moment could not be surpassed even by aggressive Koreans.

As for the comparison with the four-eyed Mercedes E-Klasse, now it is clear what the new Skoda Octavia 2017 is striving for, keeping our leadership in its segment. In Prague this spring, taxis have already begun to forget about Mercedes.

"Only Octavia!" - answered the question "What are we going to watch?" my friend, who was going to change his old "Japanese". Indeed, with such authority, functionality, the number of positive reviews and the first place in the sales class in Russia, Skoda seems to have nothing to worry about at all. Or is there something? After testing the newly updated Czech bestseller, we had doubts. What happened? All the details are in the premiere Russian test drive.

No, it's not about looks. The new “face” of the car, of course, caused some controversy, but still, the updated liftback looks interesting live, although it is still unusual. Cardinal changes are not the most traditional feature of the brand, but the owner of the novelty will instantly be identified in the stream as the owner of the latest version of Octavia, at first attracting the views of those interested.


Four sections of headlights look especially good in the evening twilight, when spectacular diode contours appear. The headlights themselves are also diode, with a variable geometry of the light beam. In addition to optics, the updated Octavia received modified bumpers, thanks to which it became a little longer. Depending on the version, the rear track has slightly widened. Of the long-awaited changes - the appearance of an all-wheel drive version for the liftback body (before that, the 4x4 modification was offered only for the station wagon). Well, the buyer will appreciate the main innovations already inside the car.

Fashionable now white color from our point of view Skoda Octavia does not go. The color reduces the expressiveness of the edges and lines of the body, making the car visually “thicker”.

All changes to the interior are evolutionary, and they relate to a greater extent to the optional and decorative composition, because it would be dangerous to subject the interior, which is rightfully considered a reference, to architectural changes. Of course, exemplary ergonomics, ease of fit and quality of materials are left intact, so at first you even have to peer at what exactly is new in the car. And there are actually a lot of new ones. Moreover, these changes were discovered gradually, during the test.



Of course, first of all, the eye rests on the latest Columbus multimedia system with a large 9.2-inch screen and full tablet-touch control. Moreover, the quality and speed of response to touch can be recognized as the best of the existing ones. The brilliance and clarity of the picture also does not raise questions, not to mention the functionality. Adding a sonorous optional Canton acoustics to such a system can be considered a must. But not everyone will get such beauty. For simpler versions, Skoda offers three more multimedia solutions, characterized by smaller screens and a simplified set of functions.



Adjusting the seat and steering wheel reveals a button for heating the latter, which was not there before. And slamming the door behind you, you pay attention to the appearance of interior contour lighting, as on the latest Superb and Kodiaq models. The wheelbase has remained the same (2686 mm), and therefore the space in the car is still the same. Landing is expected without complaints, adjustment ranges - with a margin in all directions. A 220-volt socket, a pair of USB charging ports and a branded umbrella hidden in a special niche in the front seat were added to the traditional convenience and care for passengers. Heated sofa is no longer a surprise.


The pride of all Octavias is the trunk, it is still invincible among direct competitors, neither in terms of volume (568 liters) nor in terms of functionality. It has become a little easier to get into the bottomless hold of the station wagon (588 liters) due to the appearance of an electric door drive.

Do not surprise and motor range. On the updated Skoda Octavia, it remained unchanged. The base engine 1.6 (110 hp) was justifiably absent from the test: the most popular modification in Russia is well known and has been tested more than once. So the acquaintance began with the first turbo version 1.4 TSI (150 hp), the possibilities of which, however, are also not a secret. Although not without new experiences.

The main one is still subjective, but distinct. In the updated form, the driving characteristics of the car are shifting closer and closer towards the European trends - ecology and economy. The Skoda Octavia, which received a system for changing driving modes, reacts more and more lazily to the accelerator in its nominal state - the Eco-Comfort-Normal-Sport scale has clearly shifted to the left, closer to Eco. This became especially noticeable on the serpentines in the vicinity of Gelendzhik, where the test took place.

Fortunately, these modes are configured manually (Individual parameter), and for several components, including separately the engine, DSG box, damper stiffness and steering. Surprisingly, by translating everything possible into a sporty state, you get not a tense spring, which tires you with sharp reactions, but just the most unambiguous and predictable car in return. In general, we spent the rest of the time in the Sport mode, which can be called Fitness after all.

The power and elasticity of the 1.4 TSI engine is an absolute balance for any driving conditions, allowing you to comfortably use the car in the city and not feel a lack of traction when overtaking on the highway. The organizers of the test, of course, specifically brought journalists to long serpentines: the controllability and comfort setting, backed up by excellent stability, is the second parameter after practicality, for which the Octavia is loved and bought. True, the Skoda 1.4 TSI encounters sections of repaired roads with asphalt cuts harshly - a consequence of the semi-independent rear suspension. And so it's time to change to the top version - with a 1.8 TSI engine and a multi-link.

Of course, you don’t want to let go of the steering wheel of such an Octavia, and let go of the gas pedal far from the floor. 180 horsepower carries the liftback with the ease of a sea breeze at any speed, and the S-shaped bundles of mountain turns are just waiting to take your breath away in the next turn. Of course, the atmosphere and refinement of the sportiest Octavia RS is still far away, but the most powerful of the “civilian” Octavia deserves a prefix like S-line or something like that. The flaws of domestic roads are not terrible for the car - the softness, smoothness and silence with which the older version flies through potholes makes it slow down solely because of the danger of damaging rubber or wheels.

All this applies to the station wagon, which we already got in all-wheel drive. Alas, there was no off-road route on the way, and in terms of driving impressions on dry asphalt, the Octavia Combi is no different from a mono-drive liftback, although it is heavier than it by more than a centner. Therefore, we received pleasure from new electronic "bells and whistles". The car received an active cruise, an emergency automatic braking system and auto-steering in corners - everything that we have already seen on the new Superb. Now you can let go of the steering wheel and pedals for a while on the new Octavia: the car, guided by the markings, will turn the steering wheel itself and hit the brakes if the driver is distracted.

What is the bottom line?

So where are our doubts about success if none of the parameters have become worse, despite the fact that all the updates have benefited? And the fact that all these updates came from the upper class and premium segment. Just look at the composition of the new options: expensive multimedia, all-wheel drive, choice of driving modes, mechatronic chassis, adaptive LED light and partial autopilot systems, not to mention the leather interior and all kinds of electric drives.

Having opened the price lists of the tested versions, we gasped: Octavia 1.4 TSI - for 1.5 million rubles, with a 1.8 TSI engine - for two, and the all-wheel drive station wagon went beyond 2.3 million. And this is a "people's" brand! A little more - and Skoda will have to create a budget sub-brand.

Yes, the lion's share of Octavia sales is kept at the expense of the basic versions with a 1.6 engine, produced in Nizhny Novgorod, which still fit into the psychological bar “up to a million” at a price. But buyers of such versions will only see new headlights from updates - most of the options and impressions described in this test will simply be beyond their means. The Czechs would not play in premium: a couple more price increases - and only Rapid can remain in the tops of sales.
