A clear division into classes, which continues to this day, began in 1993. We will not now go into the evolution of markings from the 20s of the last century, and simply fix that in the 80s there were digital indices indicating the engine size (300 for three-liter models, 280 for 2.8-liter models, and so on), and navigate in model range the easiest way was on the bodies. For example, the indices W123 and W124 denoted cars that today we would classify as an E-class. The exception was the S-Class, which has received this official name since 1972, when the W116 debuted. By the way, S stands for sonder, “special”.

It is curious that appeared in 1982 Mercedes-Benz 190 in the back of the W201 never had a 1.9-liter engine, neither gasoline nor diesel. We will talk about these “motor” digital indices soon in a separate article, but here you just need to understand: already in the 80s, a new classification was clearly suggested, because it was possible to get confused in the old one. And she didn't hesitate to show up.

Passenger and off-road classes

On business sedans of the W124 family, the letter E ceased to denote fuel injection and began to stand for E-class (Exekutivklasse). compact sedans These changes did not affect the W201 family (the model was at its end), but the successor to the “two hundred and first”, the car with the factory index W202, was named Comfortklasse, abbreviated as C-class.

In the future, more compact A-Class and B-Class appeared. At first they both played in the compact van segment, and then the A-class was transferred to the “golf hatchback” category. For a short time, from 2006 to 2013 there was still big minivan R-Class, but it sold poorly and is now out of production.

The brutal SUV G-Wagen became the G-class - everything was simple here. And when cars began to gain popularity at the turn of the century off-road, then in the Mercedes-Benz lineup first appeared midsize crossover M-Class, and then the large GL-Class and compact GLK-Class joined him.

Sports classes

Special mention deserves the "hot" segment of the model range. Even people who are knowledgeable in cars are constantly confused in them, and we will try to briefly trace the history of models and understand their position in the hierarchy.

The SL class has always stood apart from everyone and stands for Sehr Leicht - "ultralight". Initially, these letters were after the digital index, for example - 190SL, 300SL and so on. After the 1993 reform, they simply switched places. The model is produced and is still in its seventh generation.

The SLK roadster has nothing to do with the SL coupe. It stands for Sportlich, Leicht, Kurz, that is, "Sporty, light, short." In the first version, it was based on the C-class platform, but then it “spun off” and began to be produced on a separate compact platform. The model occupies the niche of the "junior" coupe and is sold to this day.

The SLR sports car was joint work Mercedes-Benz and McLaren, and the car was produced in the UK from 2003 to 2010. The class stood for Sport Leicht Rennsport, that is, "sport, light, racing." Then the initiative was taken atelier AMG, and the next generation was already called SLS AMG (Sport Leicht Super - I don’t think it’s necessary to decipher this). The car was produced until 2014 and was presented as the "heir" of the first 1954 300SL, since its doors opened like a "gull wing" in the same way. The new generation of the car is now called Mercedes-AMG GT.

In 1998, the CL-class appeared. To be precise, this is how they began to call the coupe based on the S-Class, which previously bore the logical name S-Class Coupe. For some reason, the abbreviation stood for Coupe Leicht (“light coupe”), although you can’t call it light. In 2014, everything is back to normal, and the new two-door S-Class has regained its historic name.

Swarovski crystal headlights will be available as an option for the S-Class coupe - 47 pieces each. Diode strips daylight encrusted with 17 rhinestones, and 30 more are part of the turn signals.

The Stuttgarters did not keep us waiting long - only a day had passed since the leak of the first picture of the new S-class coupe, as production car with the factory index C217 presented in all its glory. And, although the “live” car will be shown only in early March at the Geneva Motor Show, we now know everything about the car. And, as it turned out, the two-door differs from the sedan even more than we thought. And with this model, Mercedes is returning to the long-forgotten tradition of naming its large coupes. The very first car of this class, which appeared in the model range of the brand in 1952, wore name Mercedes-Benz S 300 Coupe.

The transverse muffler is equipped with dampers with pneumatic actuators, which, when opened at higher speeds, redirect the flow exhaust gases and make the exhaust sound louder. The moment of opening depends on the selected transmission program - in S mode it happens earlier than in E mode.

The coupe is built on the same platform as the four-door, but it was decided to take a shortened version with a wheelbase of 2945 mm as a basis. As a result, the length of the car was 5027 mm, which is 21 cm shorter than a long-wheelbase sedan (a short-wheelbase sedan is not supplied to Russia). At the same time, the machine is lower by 8.5 cm with the same width. The two-door S-Class received the same eight-cylinder engines as the sedan, in the presented on this moment version of the S 500, the engine produces 455 hp. and 700 N m. However, the motors will be aggregated with a nine-speed “automatic” 9G Tronic, designed for torque up to 1000 N m, which will allow this gearbox to be installed on versions from AMG.

In addition, the Magic Body Control system has undergone revision. And this update deserves a special mention. If the stereo cameras installed on the sedan were trained to recognize only bumps in the road, then the coupe will "see" the turns. By evaluating the steepness of the turn up to 15 meters in front of the car and based on the current speed and accelerometer readings, the car, mimicking the behavior of motorcyclists, preemptively leans into the turn at an angle of up to 2.5 °. The system operates in the range from 30 to 180 km/h and allows cornering at more speed. The creators of the S-class coupe initially stated that the car will be driver-oriented and is being developed taking into account the driver's ambitions of the owner. Previously, the CL coupe was less driver-friendly than the sedan, which was explained as follows: the owner is usually behind the wheel of a two-door, not a trained driver, and there is no need to load it unnecessarily. Let's hope that this change will not affect comfort.

The interior architecture of the coupe is generally close to the interior of the sedan, but there are many differences. In particular, a different finish with a lot of wood and galvanized inserts, new steering wheel, less retro stylized, no clock in the center of the front. The Burmester audio system is also present in the two-door.

Also part of this concept is new system projection data on the windshield. A full-color image measuring 21x7 cm and with a resolution of 480x240 pixels should look like it is hanging two meters from the driver's eyes. Of course, the two-door relies on the entire set of security systems that the sedan has. Including collision avoidance technologies in traffic, active cruise control and a system for keeping the car within the lane, which together allows you to move in city traffic without touching the steering wheel and pedals at all. Safety systems are able to prevent collisions or minimize their consequences at speeds from 7 to 200 km/h. We will learn more about trim levels and prices at the Geneva Motor Show. The start of coupe sales in Russia is expected closer to the summer of this year.

This video will help you to consider the S-Class Coupe in detail and from all sides.

Story

The ancestor of the large class Mercedes coupe-Benz can rightfully be considered a two-door 300 S Coupe. A car with a factory index W188 was presented at a motor show in Paris in 1951. The coupe was assembled by hand and, despite technical similarity with a sedan, it was more powerful, more luxurious and 50% more expensive. An in-line three-liter "six" with three Solex carburetors produced 150 hp. In 1958, the car was updated, it appeared injection motor 175 hp A rear suspension became independent. A total of 314 such vehicles were manufactured.

In 1956, the Mercedes 220 S Coupe appeared, belonging to the line with the factory index W180. For your appearance the car was nicknamed Pontoon. Initially, the car was equipped with a 100-horsepower in-line "six", but later the power was increased first to 106, and then to 115 hp, and the latest of the built copies developed 120 "horses". For all the time, 2081 Mercedes 220 S coupes were manufactured.

The next generation of large coupes (index W112) differed markedly in style from the W188. This car, which appeared in 1962, received the "fins" that were popular at that time in the United States. Six-cylinder engine 3.0 (index M189) until the 1964 models developed 160 hp. on versions with "mechanics" and 165 "horses" in cars with automatic transmission. Later, its return was increased to 165 and 175 forces, respectively. The car was quite popular, and its circulation reached 2419 copies. The Mercedes 300 SE coupe remained on the assembly line longer than the sedan - until 1967.

In 1971, the Mercedes 350 SLC coupe debuted with the C107 index. The car was equipped with a 200-horsepower "eight" 3.5. Later, more powerful motor V8 4.5 with 225 hp and as the initial version - "six" 2.8 (185 hp). The car stayed on the assembly line for ten years and during this time it was produced in a circulation of 62,888 copies.

A car with the C126 index appeared in the company's lineup in 1977. It was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show, was based on the S-class units and was offered in versions 380 SEC and 500 SEC. Both engines were V-shaped "eights" and developed 204 and 231 hp. respectively. In 1985, the coupe underwent restyling, and to the list power units two new ones have been added - V8 4.2 and V8 5.6. The latter developed up to 300 hp. in high compression versions. In total, more than 74,000 C126 coupes were sold.

In January 1992, a presentation of the model with the C140 index took place in Detroit. Mercedes 500 SEC and 600 SEC versions were initially offered. The last to get the V12 6.0 engine (394 hp) - the first time in this line. In June 1993, the name changed, and the cars began to be called S 500 Coupe and S 600 Coupe, respectively. In March 1994, the younger version of the S 420 Coupe appeared. In 1996, the names changed again. The new name - CL (Coupe Lang), which is familiar to us - was introduced to show that the cars are selling well enough to get their own name.

In 1999, a new generation of large Mercedes coupes appeared - the CL 500 version with a V8 engine and the CL 600 with a V12 engine (367 hp). Later released limited edition Mercedes CL 55 AMG F1 Limited Edition - first road car with carbon-ceramic brake discs. Only 55 of these coupes were produced. In 2002, the model survived small restyling accompanied by significant changes in motor range. The CL 500 version now had a 5.5 V8 engine with drive supercharger(355 hp), and under the hood of the CL 600 coupe is a V12 biturbo engine (500 hp). A year later, the 604-horsepower CL 65 AMG coupe saw the light of day.

The premiere of the last (at the moment) coupe with the CL index took place in 2006. Civil versions the car received the indices CL 500 (550 in the USA) and CL 600. The first was equipped with a V8 5.5 biturbo engine (388 hp), and the second with a V12 5.5 engine (also with two turbochargers). Developed the last 517 hp. The AMG division presented its editions of the car in the CL 63 AMG and CL 65 AMG versions. In 2011, the cars went through a restyling. Modernization has undergone not only the appearance, but also the engine range. The place of the 388-horsepower "eight" 5.5 in the improved version of the Mercedes CL 500 was taken by a more compact twin-charged 4.7-liter engine, producing 435 hp. and 700 N m. During the audit Mercedes modification The CL 63 AMG has received a new twin-charged "eight" 5.5, which develops up to 544 forces and 800 Newton meters. But in the more powerful CL 65 AMG coupe, the engine (V12) was slightly improved, thanks to which the number of “heads” in the “herd” under its hood increased from 612 to 630, while the torque remained at the level of 1000 N m.

For the first time the world saw a car brand Mercedes SL in 1957 and every self-respecting motorist has been wanting to own one ever since. Mercedes SL - classic sports mercedes, double, with rear wheel drive and is original to this day. However, the new generation Mercedes cars- sports Mercedes SL has received rapid development in all directions: from speed to luxury and beauty, as far as the car can be said. Now such a car has practically no flaws.

Options and specifications Mercedes SL

The 2009 Mercedes SL models are brand new, although they retain unique characteristics Mercedes cars. Each of the four 2009 Mercedes SL models has its own engine. Each car has its own character and its own charm. However, there is one thing in common - this is speed. For Mercedes models SL has no such thing as slowness.

  • The Mercedes - Benz SL550 has a 5.5-liter V8 engine at its disposal and emits an uncharacteristically barbaric growl for Mercedes. Having 382 horsepower, he is ready to accelerate even more. Overall, the SL550 is sports car with sharp control. Unlike other Mercedes models, the Mercedes SL550 can be purchased for $120,000.
  • Mercedes-Benz SL600 engine power is much greater than that of Mercedes-Benz SL550. However, our advice: don't drive a Mercedes SL600 unless you have $156,800 in your pocket, because you might fall in love with it. Fast and convenient, there is something to love about it. Its 6.0-liter V12 engine produces 517 horsepower. If you want to get real pleasure - sit down for sports steering wheel this car and go! 6.2-liter V8 engine with 517 horsepower is combined with an automated mechanical box gears with seven speeds - AMG Speedshift MCT 7.
  • Mercedes SL63 AMG is more boring version of Mercedes SL550. The SL 63 AMG is quite docile and can be used as a country car in heavy daily traffic.
  • The Mercedes SL65 AMG with a twin-turbo engine puts out 604 horsepower. It is too difficult to drive a car for an untrained driver, because the huge power makes it difficult to manage.
  • It is not surprising that Mercedes cars are not very economical and use a lot of fuel. With all this, these models are excellent and are the standard of comfort and luxury.

The 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class consists of four models:

  • SL550 ($95,900) with a 382-horsepower 5.5-liter V8 united with automatic transmission seven speed gears and manual mode. Standard equipment includes leather upholstery; electric adjustable seats heated; 2-zone automatic climate control; air filter; navigation system; leather steering wheel with audio recorder control; power windows and power door locks; remote keyless entry; six disc player; cell phone and Bluetooth; on-board computer; auto-dimming rearview mirror; automatic front auto-retractable car roof; front and rear fog lights; active adjustable suspension. Note that the SL550 is a $1,300 gas guzzler.
  • SL63 AMG ($132,000) with a 6.2-liter V8 engine with 518 horsepower, combined with a new seven-speed automated manual transmission - AMG Speedshift MCT 7. The Mercedes SL63 is safer than the Mercedes SL550, because it has better brakes.
  • The Mercedes SL600 also has modern leather upholstery; leather steering wheel. Consumes $2,600 worth of gasoline.
  • The SL65 AMG ($190,700) adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel, ventilated seats, carbon fiber interior trim instead of wood trim, to the safer brakes of the Mercedes SL600, sports suspension, front tires size P255/35ZR19 and rear tires P285/30ZR19.

The safety system is as follows: side impact airbags, driver's knee airbags, roll-back roll cage, tire pressure sensor, power-assisted anti-lock brakes emergency braking, traction control With electronic control stability. Parking sensors are standard on the SL600 and SL65 AMG, but are optional on the SL550 and SL63 AMG.

The Mercedes SL Class was developed in 2009, with a more aggressive stern and new headlights, as well as new wing shapes, new fenders and larger side mirrors. The new grille is deeper, wider and taller, with sharper crossovers than previous grilles, with a larger air intake at the bottom. The front wings are longer. New rear end features atomizer style rear bumper, new trapezoidal exhaust outlets.

The Mercedes SL has the same 0.29 aerodynamics and axle weight distribution in percentage 51 to 49.

At the lid engine compartment two raised ribs spaced 0.4m from the center. As with previous model this sporty two-door Mercedes has twin air intakes behind the passengers.

The Mercedes SL63 and SL65 come with a unique engine cover consisting of a front fascia with larger cooling vents and a black grille. On the sides, the AMG models have additional intake ports, the side ports are replaced with electronic ones, and the SL63 model has the 6.3 AMG lettering, and the V12-powered SL65 has the BITURBO lettering. All Mercedes SL models come with an automatic convertible top that opens or closes in 16 seconds. Unlike other cars on this Mercedes with convertible do not fold or raise the roof, even at low speeds.

Interior finish:

Inside the Mercedes SL - German luxury reigns. Leather upholstery is standard. Speedometer and tachometer with black centers and numbers, white rims and red needles. On-board computer can display temperature, travel time, gear engaged, and more. Water temperature and fuel consumption are shown by sensors.

At operating system COMMAND additional functions. The system is displayed on a 6.5-inch color screen and CD slot, includes radio, six discs, phone control. Pre set buttons Radios are built like telephones. The COMMAND system has many numerous buttons, but you quickly get used to them. Additional system COMMAND APS, which has HDD with a capacity of 40 gigabytes, contains navigation information and music files. COMAND APS also has voice activation and Dolby Digital 5.1. The Harman/Kardon surround sound system uses 10 speakers for a total sound output of 510 watts.

The 2009 SL has a pop-up tubular. The tubular frame is covered with leather, and the driver can lift it when he wants. The trunk is small.

Driving impressions:

Each of the four models Mercedes SL Class has its own personality. The SL550 weighs less than its siblings and is more nimble, although it's more of a racing car than a pure sports car. Its 5.5-liter V8 engine produces 382 horsepower and 6000 rpm. The V8 emits a barbaric growl that is atypical for a Mercedes. The engine provides power throughout the entire range and accelerates the SL550 from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds.

The Mercedes SL65 AMG has a twin turbo engine that produces 604 horsepower and 4800-5100 rpm. The Mercedes SL65 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and feels even faster. You might think that there are no differences between the Mercedes SL63 and the Mercedes SL65, but you will be wrong. The Mercedes SL65 has such power that when you accelerate, you just dig into your seat.

Outcome:

Models -Class 2009 is built for happiness to move. With a folding metal convertible top, you get an absolutely weatherproof coupe for cold or rainy days, and a convertible for sunny days. Tires, suspension, brakes and handling are upgraded from 2009 models. The SL550 is agile and amazing! The SL600 is more luxurious and gives its driver a sense of power. The SL 63 AMG is tough and fast. However, he is quite quiet and obedient. SL 65 is racing car with amazing features. On the other hand, the Mercedes SL has never been in demand.

Video Mercedes SL

"Bacchus loves the hills," wrote Virgil. So the landscapes of Italian Tuscany are literally strewn with vineyards. There seems to be no end to them. Smooth rows of emerald vines tightly surround the road, making it wind around the slopes. The driver - heaven, the passenger - torment. He talks a lot, and the “picture” outside the window is boring, monotonous. After all, in appearance, all these landings are exactly the same.

But to understand the difference, just look into any of the local wine shops. For example, this one, sheltered in the semi-basement of a medieval manor. There seems to be only one grape around, but the bottles are all different. Connoisseurs know that the taste of a noble drink depends not only on the variety, but even on the year of harvest. Every little thing matters!

So is the new Mercedes coupe. By by and large, this is the chassis of the “ordinary” S-class (read more about it in the material “New S-class. Almost like a dollar”), on which a two-door body was hoisted original design. And why are they only asking for at least 6,250,000 rubles!? After all, a sedan can be taken almost a third cheaper - for over four million. Is it really necessary to fork out only for a supposedly sporty image?

Not really. Firstly, S class coupe does not compromise. This car (in any case, at first) will not have frankly weak or diesel engines, and even more so, they will not make a hybrid out of it. Secondly, the status is emphasized by the initially rich equipment. And thirdly, the coupe received a couple of unique things. For example, completely LED headlights with Swarovski crystals in turn signals and running lights. Is there any practical use for such jewelry? Mercedes frankly admit - no. “But we are the first to create such a thing. She will be talked about. And that's cool."

The instrument cluster of the S 63 AMG Coupe is distinguished not only by a special settings menu, but also by a couple of design nuances. For example, the tachometer dial is decorated with a V8 Biturbo nameplate, and the speedometer is marked up to 330 km / h. By the way, from the factory the speed limiter is set to 250 km / h, but for a surcharge it can be moved up to three hundred. In addition, from practical benefits- special menu AMG, in which the display starts showing the temperature of the oil in the engine and gearbox. Until they warm up, it is impossible to “bludgeon”. It is a pity, however, that on the coupe, as well as on the S 65 AMG we recently tested, the upper part of the dials is blocked by the steering wheel rim

Perhaps for many, even such a nuance will become a significant incentive to buy (not to be, “like a neighbor”). I think these are people from the category that choose wine by a bright label. I fully admit this approach, but, you see, it is much more interesting to twist the bottle in your hands, study it and find out what is remarkable about this particular variety. For example, Pieve Santa Restituta, Sugarille, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2006. I read the description: "a silky wine with a complex taste, amazing structure and ripe, well-integrated tannins."

Just like my S 500 4MATIC Coupe, which is parked at the gate of the estate! This car is saturated with nobility like the air of a wine cellar with fragrant and intoxicating vapors. I am sure, if a person is blindfolded and driven, he will not feel the difference with a representative sedan. In a two-door, comfort is also elevated to the absolute. The ride is smooth as air cushion You don't feel any bumps at all. Silence - as if plunged to the bottom of the ocean. And only occasionally through the "thickness of water" comes the muttering of a tuned-in sports mode muffler.

Although the passengers in such a car, in my opinion, have nothing to do. Although formally the S-class Coupe is a four-seater, but in a five-meter body, the rear separate seats turned out to be almost decorative. With a height of 185 cm, I managed to accommodate myself “behind myself” there, but at the same time I sat back to back - not to move. And the greatest inconvenience is caused by the process of embarkation / disembarkation. You have to bend strongly and take such a comical pose that a smile involuntarily appears on the faces of those around you. Another thing is the front right. You get here with due solidity, and you get comfortable: leather, wood, massage, ventilation, dynamic support ... What is not here! Even heated armrests can be ordered.

But the passenger will not understand exactly why the driver, in such a generally relaxed atmosphere, forces multimedia system pump the most downhole tracks, rushes like mad, tumble into turns at an incredible speed and brakes so that the body hangs on the belts.

I will answer - yes, because the S-class Coupe infects the person behind the wheel with the poison of selfishness. For all its luxury, this model comes close to what many understand as a driver's car combination. In fact, we are dealing with a representative of the Gran Turismo class. With the only nuance that in this car, for the sake of fast movement in space, one does not have to put up literally with anything. Confident acceleration can be obtained at any time and at any speed.

This will be taken care of by 455 forces and 700 Nm of a bi-turbo V8, which develops maximum traction in the most running speed range - from 1,800 to 3,500. You should not worry about the fact that the tachometer needle will walk in this particular zone - this will provide a seven-speed "automatic » 7G-Tronic, which has long proved its worth on other Mercedes models. Don't like that adaptive pneumatic independent suspensions so diligently filter irregularities? The feeling of the road, you say, is lost? No problem - switch the chassis to Sport mode and get tighter ride in return.

In other words, only the driver can understand the thrill of driving the S 500 4MATIC Coupé.

By the way, so far I have not said anything about all-wheel drive. And this is not accidental, it's just that his work becomes noticeable only when you change to the usual "five hundred" of the classic layout. Feeling like opening another bottle of wine. For example, Chianti Classico DOCG Vigneto La Casuccia 2007. "The wine is quite powerful, full-bodied, perfectly balanced, with velvety tannins and a long aftertaste" - a kind of sample, the standard of Tuscan wines.

If a two-door with 4MATIC allows you to open the gas early and almost arbitrarily aggressively at the exit of a turn, then the single-wheel drive version, even on dry pavement, makes you drive more carefully. Otherwise, the drive axle breaks into a slip, and a strict stabilization system severely cuts off acceleration. It is obvious that on slippery road this difference becomes even more obvious.

And in general, the rear-wheel drive version is seriously different technically. In particular, a new nine-speed automatic transmission debuted on it (hello to competitors from BMW and Audi with their eight-speed automatic transmissions) - it will be connected to all-wheel drive a little later. However, this does not lead to a revolution. Fuel consumption, of course, fell a little, but I didn’t notice much progress in the smoothness of work, and in the “sport” the box was somewhat disappointing. In this mode, it begins to jump up the steps, although with such an elastic motor, this, by and large, is not necessary.

The S 500 Coupe also uses a different chassis - the Active Body Control (ABC) active hydrospring suspension, which can be supplemented with the Magic Body Control preventive stiffness system, as on a regular S-Class sedan, and the reverse tilt of the body in corners (for more details, see below). section "Technology"). Mercedes specially emphasized that its purpose is not at all sports. Like, it works most efficiently at lateral accelerations of the order of 0.5g. But in any case, the sensations are funny - when you enter the arc, you feel how the body first tends to lean in one direction, and then, contrary to the laws of physics, takes the opposite position.

Personally, it seemed to me that this system is from the category of Swarovski crystals in headlights. Cool, unique, but essentially useless. It is much more pleasant to switch the suspension simply to Sport and pilot the S 500 Coupe, rejoicing at the complete absence of rolls and the amazing obedience of the car. Although the ride, of course, will have to be sacrificed - ABC works a little harder than the Airmatic air suspension.

However, for us it is more of a general cognitive significance. It was decided to supply exclusively all-wheel drive versions of the two-door to Russia, and ABC is not compatible with such a transmission for layout reasons. The exception is the monstrous 630-horsepower S 65 AMG Coupe for 12,900,000 rubles, but the developers have not yet decided whether to install a reverse body tilt system on it.

Also, a loaded S 63 AMG Coupe will come to us only from 4 × 4. This version received all driving wheels for the first time. But in a timely manner. After all, it is very difficult to effectively realize 585 forces and 900 Nm of a 5.5-liter V8 biturbo with one pair of tires. And this clearly illustrates the difference in overclocking. If 4MATIC takes the first “hundred” in 3.9 seconds, then the monodrive version needs three tenths more.

In general, the S 63 AMG Coupe can be compared with the bright Tuscan wine Tenuta di Trinoro 2008. “A complex, powerful wine with bright tannins. On the palate, fruit notes, miners, spicy shades of spices and floral nuances are very elegantly combined.” It is best consumed in small doses and on holidays. To not get bored and there was no harm to health. The creation of engineers from Affalterbach inspires such a feeling of permissiveness and obedience that you come to your senses only when you glance at the speedometer and realize that the last ten turns of the serpentine passed at a speed of about 100 km / h ...

And the car asks for more! If on a regular S-class Coupe on a similar track we eventually gave up the brakes - the front pads just smoked from hard braking, then the AMG version did not even show signs of fatigue. And this applies not only to carbon-ceramics, but also to ordinary steel discs - they are larger in diameter than on the standard model.

The chassis is also top notch. The struts here are pneumatic, but the suspension kinematics are original, and the silent blocks are stiffer. This did not bring much damage to the smoothness of the ride, but the coupe became noticeably sharper in reactions. You just have time to think about the maneuver, and the two-door is already diving into a turn with the audacity of a kamikaze pilot. That's where the weight savings come in - the S 63 AMG Coupe weighs 65 kg less than its predecessor, which was achieved, among other things, by installing lightweight forged wheels and a lithium-ion battery.

In general, the tasting was rich. Whichever version of the S-class Coupe you take, each has its own special character and unique taste. And to feel it, it is not at all necessary to study as a sommelier - just love cars is enough...

TECHNIQUE

The main innovation of the S-class Coupe was the function of reverse body tilt in corners, as is done, for example, by motorcyclists. If, at a speed of 15 to 180 km/h, the electronics, using a stereo camera (it scans the road 15 meters ahead) and a lateral acceleration sensor, detects a turn, the body will automatically tilt up to 2.5 degrees to the center of the turn. This ability, in fact, does not affect the speed of passing winding sections, but, according to the developers, it can reduce the burden on the driver and passengers. At the same time, from the point of view of technology, the new system is just another program function the unique Active Body Control hydraulic spring suspension, which Mercedes-Benz has been steadily improving since 1999. Recall that in such a chassis there are no conventional stabilizers roll stability. But there is a hydraulic cylinder between the body and each spring rack. Moving at the command of the electronics (the central pump develops pressure up to 200 bar, a hundred times more than in car tire), pistons change pressure by elastic element and, accordingly, its rigidity. This happens in a fraction of a second. Therefore, the suspension instantly adapts to changes in load, roll, quality pavement etc.

The M157 5.5-litre V8 was introduced to AMG vehicles relatively recently, in 2011. This motor is assembled by hand by one craftsman and is an oversized version of the 4.7-liter M278 engine that is installed in the regular S-class Coupe. They are united by almost all Constructive decisions: twin turbo, direct injection fuel with piezo injectors, an aluminum cylinder block with a special Silitec anti-friction coating, start-stop systems and variable valve timing. In addition, in a number of details, these V8s are unified with modern Mercedes V6s.

Head-up display comes at an additional cost. It informs the driver about the current speed, road signs, navigation, modes auxiliary systems. The image gives a LED projector with a resolution of 480 × 240 pixels with automatic brightness adjustment depending on external lighting. The projection is organized in such a way that the driver sees it as if at a distance of two meters from the hood. This allows a person not to refocus their eyes and thus be less distracted from the road.

However, on the basis of the S-class, the coupe began to be made much later - in 1981, when the two-door W126 family was introduced. It turned out to be very successful: it lasted 10 years on the assembly line and sold over 74,000 copies around the world.

It is not surprising that Mercedes-Benz did not abandon the popular (and very prestigious!) Model. Moreover, in the next generation, built on the basis of the legendary "hundred and forty" S-class, they called it S-class Coupe, as if emphasizing belonging to the elite. It was on this machine that the system debuted in 1995. ESP stabilization. And soon the two-door was brought into an independent CL-class family.

When the S-Class sedan switched to the W220 in 1999, the CL coupe quickly followed. And again, the two-door surprised not only with a combination of luxury, comfort and sport, but also with innovations. So, for example, this model for the first time in the world tried on bi-xenon headlights and an active hydraulic spring suspension ABC (Active Body Control), which eventually evolved into modern system Magic Body Control.

The CL-class of the 2006 model did not begin to change traditions. It was built on the basis of the S-class in the back of the W221 and was also made the locomotive of new technologies. First of all, related to security. In particular, Mercedes introduced intelligent light and PRE-SAFE system, which, in the event of a collision threat, preemptively prepared the car and passengers for a possible impact, reducing the severity of its consequences.

ALTERNATIVE

For now Russian representation Mercedes-Benz has indicated prices only for all-wheel drive versions of the S-class Coupe. The “regular” two-door S500 Coupe 4Matic is offered for 6,250,000 rubles, and the charged version of the S63 AMG Coupe 4Matic is offered for 8,500,000 rubles. And it turns out that in this situation, the Stuttgart coupe actually has no rivals in Russia. Other representatives of the premium segment either do not have similar models at all, or they play in other price and consumer niches. For example, Cadillac CTS-V Coupe is unnecessarily extreme and costs almost twice as much. Jaguar F-Type The V8 S is better for the price, but it's also more sporty, and it's only rear-wheel drive and only seats two people. It turns out that the closest thing to the S-class Coupe is all-wheel drive BMW 6th series. But, firstly, the Bavarian two-door is somewhat more modest in size, and secondly, it is also more affordable. It is offered starting from 3,756,000 rubles. Let these be six-cylinder cars, but the 650i xDrive version with V8 under the hood costs “only” 4,443,000 rubles. And the rear-wheel drive M6 for 6,995,000 rubles cannot reach the price of the S63 AMG Coupe.
