Today, the AMG brand is known to people around the world. It can often be found on business and premium models. However, not everyone knows about the history and technology of this division. This will be discussed in this article.

Story

The AMG brand was created over 45 years ago by two engineers, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher in the village of Grossapach. The beginning of the brand dates back to the 60s. At this time, Aufrecht and Melcher were developing the special 300 SE racing engine in Daimler's design department. Despite the suspension of the concern's participation in motorsport, the engineers continued to work on this engine. The scene was Aufrecht's house in Grossapach. In 1965, their Daimler-Benz colleague, Manfred Schick, starts the German Touring Car Championship driving a car with a 300 SE engine. Modified by Atzfrecht and Melcher, the engine brings Schick ten victories. Later, the glory of true professionals in the field of modernization and improvement of Mercedes-Benz cars comes to them.

In 1967 they open the AMG engineering office. The location of the company was an old mill in Burgstall. After a short period of time, the demand for engines begins to grow, which are being refined and increased in power. Their purchasers are various racing teams.

The victory at the 24-hour race in Spa is the first major milestone in the history of the company. The victory in its own class, as well as the second place in the overall standings - all this was ensured by an AMG Mercedes equipped with a 300 SEL 6.8 engine. Similar to a heavy executive sedan, due to the engine, it easily outperformed lighter competitors. After that, the name AMG began to sound around the world and to this day remains a popular brand of the Daimler concern.

AMG technologies

In addition to boosting engines, the AMG engineering bureau is developing technologies that make driving more comfortable. Let's talk about some of them.

Dynamic characteristics

Composite materials, which have been of great help in motorsport, provide excellent performance even with the heaviest dynamics. The suspension is stiffer, provides decent control over the car. This is facilitated by a smaller body roll angle. In addition, the suspension adapts the damping to the specific driving style.

The push-button control allows the suspension to be adjusted for enhanced comfort and agility. There is sporty handling with an additional aggressive gear ratio. It allows you to feel the full potential of the transmission.

A little about the transmission

Sporty dynamics require a technically sophisticated transmission. It should competently transfer engine power to the road and help the driver drive the car with maximum convenience.

The gearbox, developed by engineers from AMG, has the ability to adapt to any driver's requirements. The result is unbelievable reliability, economy, and torque-free shifting.

In addition, the driver can adjust the transmission to suit their own driving style, switching between gear modes without any problems.

Rolling arches

Bureau AMG has developed a unique technology of rolling arches. Since the right AMG wheel should be in the same plane as the wing, and on some the edge is bent inward, you need to straighten it outward.

After preparing the workplace and removing the wheel, the roller is put in place. Then the edge is heated with a dryer for industrial use so that it becomes elastic. We adjust the roller and bring the edge of the wing to the outside. We roll to the left side for uniformity. Approximately also roll out the arches of the rear type.

Production of the company

As part of the work on the improvement of cars, the AMG division produces powertrains, gearboxes, interior elements, and rims. Of the latest solutions, a dual-type turbocharger for V-engines, turbochargers, as well as piezo injectors with gasoline injection using a technology similar to Common Rail are used.

Mercedes-Benz is a manufacturer that has become famous all over the world for its reliable, powerful, beautiful and really high-quality cars. And if we talk about this concern, then it is impossible not to be touched by the attention of AMG. What is this abbreviation and what is hidden behind the three letters?

Story

Back in 1967, in the city of Grossaspasch, two engineers created the AMG company, which was supposed to design and test racing engines. They did not think about the name for a long time - they simply took the first letters of the names of the founders of this bureau and the city. Their first client was a man from Kiel, who drove his Mercedes to the office, which his acquaintances advised him. And the mechanics were really able to squeeze everything out of the engine of his car. The client was so impressed with the quality of the work done that a couple of hours later he returned to AMG and once again thanked the mechanics, which inspired them greatly.

From that moment began the history of the company, which today is known throughout the world. And the next stage in their career growth was the beginning of cooperation with Mercedes-Benz. To date, AMG are cars with a beautiful body kit, with minimal acceleration to “hundreds” (a little more than three seconds), and the engine power indicator goes far beyond 1000 hp. It is not surprising that these cars are respected and in demand among motorists.

Powerful dynamics

The high dynamics of AMG Benz is successfully emphasized by its stylish design, which also combines technical necessity. These features include, for example, widely protruding wheel arches. In general, it is worth noting that the technical component radically distinguishes Mercedes AMG from other cars. So engineers always face an important and difficult task - to integrate powerful equipment into the car, and at the same time create a presentable appearance with traditional athletic proportions.

To achieve this goal, the creators adhere to the principle that the form always follows the dynamics. And in the guise of AMG it shows. For example, powerful air intakes, which are located in the form of the letter “A”, convex spectacular lines on the hood, enlarged wheel arches, wide tires, clearly designed sill lining - all this is AMG. What does it give, why do engineers develop every little thing of the car so carefully? The fact is that every detail is made in the best traditions of AMG, the result is a real unique sports car that cannot be confused with any other car.

The sports engine is the heart of AMG

Separately, I would like to touch on the topic of AMG engines. What is this part of the car, everyone knows. The motors of these machines are as powerful as possible, they are distinguished by a wide speed range, low specific gravity and excellent acoustic performance. Also, one cannot but rejoice. The developers themselves impose increased requirements on their inventions, and, I must say, this is bearing fruit. It is due to the engines that Mercedes AMG cars are extremely maneuverable, have excellent traction and quickly accelerate to “hundreds”. It should not be hidden that AMG engines are powerful units, in the development of which expensive technical solutions taken from racing were used. It was AMG who developed the new 5.5-cylinder V8 biturbo engine that amazed everyone in 2010.

Bright representative of the series

Perhaps the Mercedes-Benz AMG SL 65 is a car that can become the face of the entire series. Indeed, this is the most powerful representative of this lineup. The car looks luxurious, develops incredible speed in seconds and provides the driver with complete safety on the road. What is the first thing that catches your eye? Perhaps the exterior. It is worth highlighting the sports exhaust system with double chrome-plated tailpipes, the latest nameplates V12 BITURBO, double louvre and this is just a small list of the features of this luxurious model.

Mercedes-Benz AMG SL 65 has a trunk roof spoiler, perfectly polished LED running lights and even “gills” (both on the wings of the body and on the hood). One thing can be said about the interior: this is the real embodiment of sophistication. Noble materials were used in the decoration, so the Mercedes looks as luxurious inside as it does outside. Not an ounce of vulgarity and excess - everything is in the best traditions of the German manufacturer.

Max power

Finally, I would like to say a few words about the most powerful and expensive AMG electric car. What kind of car is it, what does it look like, what are its technical characteristics? This is SLS Electric Drive. Its price is about 538 thousand dollars. This monster accelerates to “hundreds” in a little less than four seconds, and its maximum speed is 155 miles per hour! Despite the fact that the four electronic motors are charged by a lithium-ion battery, they give out a very solid power - 740 hp. To fully “gain strength”, the car needs 20 hours, but a 22 kW fast charger is sold with the car - it reduces this process to three hours. The car really impresses with its technical characteristics. So far, no manufacturer in the world has been able to achieve such results, only Mercedes-Benz has achieved such success. That is why AMG today occupy the first places in the rankings of the best, high-quality and popular cars.

I am sure you have seen these cars more than once in your life. Whether they were standing behind them in traffic or walking down the alley, they threw a glimpse at the lid of their trunk. Three-pointed star, in principle Mercedes, like. But each time, your mind picked up one detail that is not so often present on these cars. Three letters, A.M.G. What is it and what do they eat with? Let's try to figure it out.

There is probably not a single person living in big cities who would not know that the presence of these three letters means that the car that he is currently looking at is a tuned version of a Mercedes-Benz. But how many of you have ever wondered what this abbreviation means and is it an abbreviation at all? In what cases are these badges hung on Mercedes? Do they necessarily have to mean that hundreds of horsepower lurk under the hood of this particular instance? And that this car should always cost twice as much as a regular model from Stuttgart?

A.M.G. is a division of the Stuttgart-based automaker. Since 2007, the sub-brand has been completely absorbed by the auto giant, which, on the one hand, allowed it to expand its capabilities in preparing cars, but on the other, significantly reduced its independence in decision-making.

The company was originally created by two former Mercedes engineers who worked in the sports department and were involved in the development of the 300 SE sports engine in 1967. Since then, the AMG nameplate has become synonymous with the speedy and powerful Mercedes models so adored by the creators of this company. Their names were Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher. Accordingly, the initial letters of their surnames formed the beginning of the abbreviation, "AM", while "G" was added from the name of the city of Grossaspach (Großaspach), which is located near Stuttgart, where the first founder of the company was born.

The answers to the following three questions can be combined into one. Mercedes attaches AMG nameplates only if the engineers from Affalterbach have done their magic on the car. But the degree of intervention in the factory model can vary significantly. For example, two absolutely identical cars in the back of the W212 (fourth generation E-Class) can differ in technical terms like heaven and earth.

Under the hood of one you will find a "modest" 4.6-liter V-shaped eight-cylinder engine with 408 hp. with 600 Nm of torque or any other engine from the line (the engine in this case of tuning can be any, even 1.8 liter). Another Mercedes with an AMG badge will have a modified unit installed. Accordingly, his performance will be completely different. On the example of a naturally aspirated engine (M156) E63 AMG, the power data will correspond to 525 hp. and 630 Nm of torque.

The thing is that in the first case we are dealing with an additional package: AMG Sport.

In the model with the W212 body, the sports package includes:

Appearance

Modified bumpers (rear and front);

Side skirts very similar in design to those fitted to Mercedes-AMG vehicles;

Front apron and rear bumper diffuser in AMG style;

18" alloy wheels with sporty low profile tires 245/40 R18 front and 265/35 R18 rear

Interior

Sports seats with improved lateral support and contrasting lateral stitching on the seats and armrests;

The upholstery of the front sports seats is made of DINAMICA microfiber and ARTICO man-made leather.

3-spoke Nappa leather sports steering wheel with shift paddles;

Black roof lining;

Sports metal pedals with rubber spikes are made of stainless steel;

The floor will also feature branded floor mats with the AMG logo;

Technical component

Lowered sports suspension;

Perforated brake discs of increased diameter;

Calipers with Mercedes-Benz logo.

Additionally, cars with V6 or V8 were equipped with automatic seven-speed 7G-Tronic transmissions.

In the second example, we are talking about a full-fledged (real, if you want) modification of A.M.G.

The fourth generation of the E63 AMG already had a 6.2 liter V8 M156 engine. Power - 525 hp, torque - 630 Nm. The engine was mated to a special AMG-prepared AMG SpeedShift MCT gearbox.

The tuning version was equipped with an AMG Ride Control sports suspension with a modified damping system, which was perfect for both aggressive, dynamic driving and urban conditions.

Also, AMG specialists with new steering rods, a lightweight anti-roll bar, a new subframe. Ceramic brake discs and wide tires 255/40 R18 at the front and 285/35 R18 at the rear ensure safety at high speeds.

The main external difference is the “6.3 AMG” nameplates.

The efficiency of the car increased significantly, even compared to the most powerful version of the E500 4MATIC of those years, which accelerated to 100 km / h in 5.2 seconds, the sedan pumped in AMG “made” a hundred in 4.5 seconds.

And finally about the cost. Naturally, these two versions of cars differed significantly in cost. A model upgraded by AMG could cost 1.5-2 times more than a modified version with an AMG look.

Mercedes AMG A45 4Matic

The entry-level representative of AMG is the AMG A 45 4Matic. The 2.0 liter A45 engine is turbocharged and has 360 hp. in hatchback body style. 381 strong 2.0 liter engine is available for the restyled version of the car.

The A45 is a very fast and at the same time affordable AMG car. Acceleration in 4.6 seconds (or 4.2 seconds in the restyled version) really makes this superhatch a real hot thing. It is even capable of overtaking the base version of the Porsche 911.

Mercedes AMG E 63

The AMG E 63 is basically the same as the C 63, only bigger, more powerful and a bit faster. 5.5 liter twin-turbo V8 engine quickly responds to pressing the accelerator pedal, has 558 hp. in the "regular" AMG version and 585 hp. in the E 63 AMG S version.

Both tuning versions of the E-Class go out in 4 seconds when sprinting to 100 km / h, reaching the milestone in 3.7 and 3.6 seconds, respectively.

Cost in Russia:

E 63 AMG 4MATIC: 5.790.000 rubles

E 63 AMG S 4MATIC: 6.000.000 rubles

In our country, it is possible to buy a whole range of models that have been touched by the hands of the wizards from AMG. We have named the most common and most affordable line options for you. Also on the market in Russia you can buy: , AMG, AMG, and SL-Class AMG, and SLC-AMG. As you can see, there is a choice.

A few words about the AMG packages...

The above examples concern truly charged options from AMG. Let's give an example of more budget options that will be affordable for many Mercedes lovers. To show others your taste, you do not need to lay out millions of rubles. It is enough to purchase an AMG package for your car and you will be happy. The option is suitable for calm drivers. Its main advantage is budget.

Almost any Mercedes-Benz vehicle in the lineup can be equipped with the AMG package. We cited the assembly of the AMG package above using the example of the previous generation model. A flexible system of "customizing" Mercedes for yourself allows you to create an irresistible appearance and exclusivity for your favorite car without any problems and overpayments.

AMG, is it worth buying?

I understand that the question sounds very strange. And yet, is it necessary to buy AMG? If there is a sufficient number of banknotes and a desire, of course it is possible, even necessary. Among the competitors from the big German three (,), in our opinion, it is cars with a three-pointed star that can give not only breathtaking dynamism and breathtaking speeds, but also incomparable style and a classic sense of sophistication, familiar only to Mercedes-Benz owners.

Which is better, a used AMG or a new Mercedes with the optional AMG Sport package?

Some will think, maybe get a used AMG variant? We would not advise doing this in times of crisis. If you don’t have enough money for a new AMG, it’s better not to risk it and buy the latest model from the salon, complemented by an AMG body kit. This way you will avoid the following:

Large operating costs;

High fuel consumption;

Huge tax and insurance;

A used car tends to break down. Can you imagine how much original parts from AMG can cost? That's it!

All of this can be avoided with a regular Mercedes with the AMG package. Service will not cost a big penny, and for 90% of people it will look exactly like a real Mercedes-Benz AMG.

42 years ago, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melchner, two young successful designers from Daimler, created the "Design and Test Office for the Development of Engines for Racing Cars". They have been successful. Today, the AMG abbreviation is a symbol of maximum automotive power in the most magnificent design performance.

AMG decoding

So what is AMG? The letter A is the surname of Hans Werner Aufrecht, the letter M is the surname of his companion Erhard Melchner, and the letter G is the village of Grossashpach, where Aufrecht was born. After a successful career at Daimler, they wanted more: more speed, power and freedom.

AMG's home is Affalterbach, a quiet village in the Rems-Murr district. It was here that in 1976 a company appeared that began to equip Mercedes with even more powerful engines, wide wheels and add expressive angles and edges to their bodies. Since 1999 the firm has been called Mercedes-AMG GmbH. Starting as a tuning studio, the company has turned into a creator of exclusive heavy-duty modifications. In the first year of the new millennium, the demand for cars with the AMG logo reached 11,500 units, a year later - 18,700. In 2003, their number exceeded 20,000, and 2008 was the most successful year for AMG - 24,200 sports cars sold. So, on June 1, 1967, our two enthusiasts opened a tuning shop for Mercedes-Benz cars. The first success came four years later. The Mercedes 300 SEL 6.3, the world's fastest production sedan, has added 500 cc through the hands of AMG engineers. cm of working volume and its power increased from 250 to 428 liters. With. The rally version of the 300 SEL 6.8 took part in the 24 Hours of Spa-Francochamps and finished best in its class and second overall. After such success, AMG had its first fans who wanted to purchase a customized version of the AMG engine with the signature of the master.

Other sporting achievements followed: the 450 SLC AMG won the 1980 European Road Racing Championship, the 300E 5.6 AMG became the first E-class to break 300 km/h. In the DTM series, AMG cars also set the tone: in 1992, 16 out of 24 races were won by AMG cars. The first woman to win a DTM race was Ellen Lohr, who piloted a highly refined racing Mercedes. In 1999, Mercedes-Benz and AMG strengthened their relationship and the Mercedes-AMG GmbH was founded. The name of the models now uses the Mercedes class and numbers indicating the engine displacement. By the way, even today each engine is assembled by one person. A personal plate with the name of the master and his personal signature guarantees the perfect assembly.

Modern models

The AMG models are not only advanced engines. Brakes, suspension, transmission, electronic systems and vehicle performance management systems are also being recycled. And what a discreet but spectacular design these cars have!

What is the company preparing for the near future? A new "revolution": in 2010, the first independent development of Mercedes-AMG GmbH is released. The SLS AMG, an exquisite marvel of engineering, features a 6.3-litre engine that pumps out as much as 420 kW (571 hp), an aluminum space frame, a dry sump lubrication system, a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with remote arrangement of drive units. It is a supercar with gullwing doors like the legendary 300 SL Gullwing. This car has every chance to open a new page in the history of the automotive industry.
