Air filter VAZ-2110 and its installation

In order for the car engine to work measuredly with the highest performance, it needs high-quality fuel mixture. One of the important devices involved in its formation is air the filter is an indispensable element of any engine, be it gasoline or diesel. Specifically, it provides the carburetor or injector with air, cleaning it from water and dust.

In this article, we will talk about what a VAZ-2110 air filter is, and also consider the process of installing it.

Why you need a filter

Both petrol and diesel engine will be able to work perfectly without an air filtration device, but will it last forever? Small particles of dust, dirt and moisture, if they enter the engine cylinders, will begin to destroy rubbing parts over time.

In addition, the fuel mixture, which will include moisture and various debris, will not only not provide sufficient power, but will also become a prerequisite for the imminent failure of the carburetor, injector, injectors, etc.

Where is the air filter element located and what is it

Who among motorists does not know what an air filter is? Probably there is no such owner who at least once did not encounter the need to replace it on his vehicle. There is nothing complicated in this process, however, often, it is taken to change it only when it is completely worn out and takes on the appearance of an old shabby rag.

Of course, this state of affairs does not affect the operation of the engine in the best way, since a worn filter cannot guarantee high-quality air purification and various pollutants enter the engine along with it, affecting the stability of the work process. power unit. Therefore, it is necessary to replace this part on time, as soon as the first signs of wear appear. How to choose an air filter replacement and how to replace it correctly, you can find out by reading this article to the end.

1. What is an air filter?

Almost every car owner who has ever had to look under the hood of a car knows that the vehicle's performance is ensured not only by fuel, but also by air, the volume of which is several times larger.

This ratio of proportions comes out of the conditions of fuel combustion, because for the correct conduct of the process it is necessary that the air in combustible mixture was 15-20 times more than gasoline itself (or diesel fuel). That is, standard car, per 100 kilometers, uses 12-15 cubic meters of atmospheric air. And everything would be fine, if not for one “but” ... The ambient air, in addition to useful gases, contains a decent amount of mechanical impurities, including dust, oil droplets, plant seeds and other microscopic pollutants. If such air is not cleaned before being supplied to the engine of the machine, all its components will get inside the motor, acting on the rubbing parts as an abrasive, thereby accelerating their wear.

It is clear that after some time, the operation of the power unit will deteriorate and the complete failure of this part will not be long in coming. In order for the engine resource not to decrease at a phenomenal speed, it is necessary to clean the air as soon as it enters inner space vehicle. It is for these purposes that an air filter is used, however, this is not its only function. Also, it acts as noise propagating throughout the intake tract, and in gasoline engines also regulates the temperature of the combustible mixture.

An important indicator of the filter element is the maximum resistance to the intake air, which not only reflects the quality of the filter itself, but notes performance indicators engine with a lack of air during mixture formation. The more contaminated the filter element, the higher the level of its resistance to air flow, which in turn limits the amount of air required for mixture formation. In some operating modes, this leads to a greater enrichment of the mixture and to its incomplete combustion. In other words, at more consumption fuel, engine power drops. To avoid such problems, the filter element should be changed periodically.

It is believed that the optimal frequency this process, should be approximately 10,000 kilometers, but this is only if the warning signs of this need have not appeared earlier. The main indicator is elevated level release of carbon dioxide from exhaust pipe car(can be measured at any service station), and if at the same time the power has also decreased, then checking the described part will definitely not be superfluous. In addition, the owner should be alerted by a sharp increase, especially if it comes with the problems described above.

But how to replace if you have not had to deal with such a malfunction before? Do not worry, there is nothing complicated in this process, and it is not difficult to determine the location of the part, you just need to look at inner part air intake, which is located in the upper part. In more detail, we will describe the entire process of dismantling the old filter and installing a new one a little later, but for now we will find out how to choose the right replacement for a failed part.

2. How to choose the right replacement part?

If you think that knowledge correct replacement the air filter will be enough, then I hasten to upset you: no less important is the process correct selection replacement parts, and sometimes there are problems. The fact is that all filters are classified according to the principle of operation, that is, based on the number of purification stages through which the air passes and the principle of trapping dust particles. Also, they can be "wet" and "dry", and both options do not differ in complex design. In the first case, the filtering process is carried out using mineral oil, poured into a special case, and in the second, the role of the cleaning element is assigned to special corrugated paper.

Nowadays, "dry air filters" are more popular. The bodies of these parts are made from special plastic, and the filling consists of a special plastic paper that can effectively clean the air flows entering the engine. The tightness of the whole structure is ensured by a certain polymer composition - plastisol, which fills the joints between the body and the cartridges. Dry air filters clean the incoming air flow by 99.6%, however, with an increase in the cleaning ratio, the power of the motor is seriously reduced, especially if the filter element is clogged with dust and dirt. Therefore, you can consider the option of buying a foam rubber filter that can be disassembled, which means you can clean the filter element yourself (after dismantling, it is enough to wash it in warm soapy water and install the housing in place).

If you need to get low resistance to the incoming air, then when choosing it is worth considering filters with zero resistance, which, by the way, are included in standard equipment engine tuning (if you need to increase its power).

The main problems of such filters are high cost and high maintenance requirements, since you will have to buy a special solution to flush the cartridges. The positive point of use is to increase engine power (at high and low revs) and its loudness.

For car tuning, it is better to choose class air filters "Cold air intake". The system of such parts is a long steel pipe going under the bottom of the motor. The principle of its operation is quite simple: the colder the air flow, the higher the power. car engine. The main disadvantage of such a system is too high a price, in addition, to install it, you will have to completely remove front wheel. However, as they say, “it’s the master’s business” and if engine power is very important to you, then it’s probably worth spending money and buying this particular filter.

Also, next to the motor set "short" intake systems, consisting of a not very long metal pipe, with a filter element attached to it. The disadvantage of such an air filter, first of all, is the noise it creates, in second place is the ability to suck into the combustion chamber of the engine hot air, which negatively affects the power of the power unit. However, in comparison with the previous options, it is much easier to install, and the cost of such a part is much lower, which is also important criterion in a situation of choice.

The advantages of conventional, "dry" air filters(installed not for tuning reasons, but based on a more pressing problem - standard air filtration) there is ease of operation, low weight and low price, thanks to which the purchase of a replacement part will not be so noticeable for the family budget. The main disadvantages, car owners usually include increased sensitivity to mechanical stress and the lack of the possibility of repair measures.

“Wet” (or oily) varieties, on the contrary, are suitable for repeated use and do not take a long time to figure out the process of replacing the air filter: just wash the case and fill in new fluid. The disadvantage of such details is poor performance, because of which, at present, they are practically not used.

Most often, in terms of domestic auto industry, oil air filters are best suited for installation on Gazelle vehicles, as well as other commercial vehicles. Their design has remained unchanged for many years, the main element of which is a tin container for pouring mineral oil (it can be inexpensive), against which, at full speed, an air stream hits, purified in this way to right level. , in this case, will have minimal wear.

3. Do-it-yourself air filter replacement?

Well, with the desired replacement frequency and possible types we figured out the air filters, now let's move on to the instructions for installing them. Naturally, on preparatory stage, you must first visit the auto shop and select suitable model details, and it must comply not only with the brand of the vehicle, but also with the requirements High Quality: carefully inspect the body, it should not have any scratches or damage, and the joints must be hermetically sealed.

The next step, on the way to replacing the air filter, is the dismantling of the old part. To get to it, you need to unscrew the fasteners that secure the cover of the device, and then remove it. Often it is held with a conventional wrench, which means that it is enough to use a simple wrench on "10". If you find fasteners of a different kind, then you need to select a tool according to the circumstances. To do this, it will not be superfluous to prepare a box with tools in advance, as well as a clean rag, since before replacing the air filter cartridge, the case itself should be wiped well (from dust and traces of fluids being used). When cleaning it, it is important not to forget to process the holes through which air enters. And finally, the last and most important step is the installation of a new filter element (just remember to remove the protective paper layer from it).

In principle, the installation process itself is simply super elementary, because it is enough to insert the spare part into the case and tighten the cover. However, it is worth remembering that such items are only suitable for one-time use, which means that it is strictly forbidden to blow and clean old elements, this can lead to engine breakdown and rather expensive repairs. For information on the complete replacement of the air filter, you can find out from the technical documentation of the vehicle.

Even a technically illiterate person understands that water and dirt in the fuel cause accelerated wear. fuel equipment, and poorly refined oil significantly reduces engine life. Therefore, most transport companies are quite serious about the selection of oil and fuel filters, but air ones are perceived somewhat lightly. Think about how a few extra dust particles can harm the motor? ..

Now any car owner has a huge selection of motor oils of various types, grades and brands. You can also choose diesel fuel from different suppliers, although there are fewer offers here. But it is not possible to select the air entering the engine. Depending on the road conditions, weather and season in the air there are some or other pollution. The only barrier to mechanical particles entering the engine with air is the air filter, and those who save on the air filter are at great risk: it is enough to get 1 g of pollution per 1 hp into the engine. capacity to require repair.

The choice of air filter must be treated with caution, since it is easy to get a fake, because it is easy to make a fake air filter. To do this, they take dimensions from the original, make a similar case and insert the appropriate paper into it, but more often - inappropriate.

Few people know that there are more than four hundred types of paper used in filters! Yes, and the amount of this paper in fakes, as a rule, is less, and the joints between the paper and seats the filter element in such products is not always properly glued.

Sometimes, to save money, instead of the required size, filter elements of a lower height are used, installing some kind of spacers under them. Such a design is not reliable, since leaks usually remain between the filter and the spacer, through which uncleaned air penetrates, and, in addition, the capacity of such a filter is smaller, which means that it will need to be replaced sooner.

Conclusion: buying a cheap filter in most cases does not mean savings at all.

Installation location

A single fuel engine will not run without air. Combustion of fuel necessarily requires air, and not only purified, but also supplied in a certain amount and not in a volume ratio with fuel, but in weight. So the location of the filter is also important.

The density of hot air is less, which means that the same volume of air contains less oxygen. Therefore, it is very bad when the air intake is located near the exhaust pipe: in this case, not only heated air, but also exhaust gases can enter the engine. But the exhaust gases are not just hot - they have much less oxygen and soot is present. Not only that, in this case, the engine will operate in oxygen starvation mode, its air filter will begin to become intensively clogged with unburned particles or soot.

Filtration quality

There are quite a few sizes of filters designed for the same engine, which is primarily due to the desire of manufacturers to protect their design. Preparing a mold for filter production is a rather laborious process. Its development is especially difficult, since the place for placing the filter is usually limited and often has a very specific shape.

At the same time, there are only two main types of filters. In the first of them, the filter element is clamped by a cover along its longitudinal axis. Usually in this case, by the time the filter is replaced on the truck, which usually occurs after a run of about 50 thousand km, the filter “sticks” to the landing surface, and in order to rip it off, you have to pull. In this case, part of the dust located between the corrugations usually wakes up inside the case and can get into intake manifold and then to the engine. Therefore, the filter element must be removed carefully, only shaking it from side to side.

The quartz particles that make up the sand are especially dangerous for the engine. Quartz is very hard, highly abrasive and scratches heavily polished workpiece surfaces. piston-cylinder group. As a result, exhaust gases with soot particles begin to break into the crankcase, which leads to a rapid deterioration in oil performance. This in turn causes overheating of the engine and accelerated wear of its other parts. And the carrier sins, as a rule, on oil and an oil filter, although the air filter is the root cause.

Since the weakest link in technology in general and in air filters in particular is the human factor, a fundamentally different design of the air filter was invented - with a radial seal. In this case, a filter with a silicone-lubricated seating surface is put on the pipe, which eliminates its “sticking”, seal leakage and dirt ingress into the intake manifold.

Can good be cheap?

Theoretically, inexpensive filters of acceptable quality may appear on sale from time to time, because when entering the market, some companies, especially little-known ones, focus on reducing the final price of their products. However, this does not happen often, and it does not last long, so a low price is usually accompanied by low quality. The cheapness of an air filter means, first of all, its low cost, and it can be reduced by using cheaper paper or reducing its quantity, while turning a blind eye to workmanship or using unskilled labor.

Visually determining the quality of the filter is difficult, but there are still points that you should pay attention to if in doubt.

All impurities that are trapped by the air filter remain on the surface of the paper. To increase the amount of contaminants retained by the filter, i.e., its capacity, increase the amount of paper. And in order to maximize the area of the filtering surface, the paper is usually corrugated, and the rarer the corrugations, the lower the filter capacity.

On the corrugations, special dents are made at certain intervals in order to keep the accordion pliers at a more or less uniform distance and, moreover, to prevent them from sticking together. On the outer surface of the paper of many filters, spiral adhesive tracks are applied to prevent the vibration of the corrugations, which is caused by the pulsation of the air drawn in by the engine. Vibration, in turn, is dangerous because the paper can touch the outer mesh and quickly rub off, which means that the filter will become inoperative.

Air filter capabilities

The efficiency of the so-called "wet" filters that clean liquids - fuel, oil, coolant, etc., is usually measured in microns, which corresponds to the minimum size of the retained particles. The same parameter for air filters is measured as a percentage, which determines what weight fraction of airborne contaminants this filter can hold.

Some manufacturers claim that their filters are 99% clean, while others, like Cummins Filtration, guarantee that their air filters have an average cleaning efficiency of 99.96%. In this case, the word "medium" means that the degree of filter cleaning changes during operation. When a new clean filter is installed, the entire surface works for it, but over time, some of the holes become clogged, and the efficiency increases and at a certain stage reaches a maximum. Theoretically, a 100% filter would be ideal, but it would most likely not let air through at all or have too much resistance.

What a percentage indicator means for a particular consumer is easy to estimate by calculating how much dirt gets into the engine when it works with a particular filter. Thus, an efficiency of 99% means that if 1000 g of dust enters the filter, then 10 g of this amount will enter the engine. And with an efficiency of 99.96%, only 0.4 g of dust will enter the engine. Therefore, if someone offers a "good" filter with 99% efficiency, one should question whether it is really good.

Resource

However, in real life vehicle owners are more concerned about how long an air filter can last without replacement, and so they change it every 70 thousand km, while saying that it could still work. Here we must remember that as the pores become clogged, the quality of the filtration increases, but throughput At the same time, the filter decreases, and the air begins to run out. By the way, it is easy to feel the loss of engine power.

The resource of air filters largely depends on the operating conditions of the equipment and is determined by their capacity. Depending on the dustiness of the air, the filters may have a different interval between replacements, so it is impossible to give an unambiguous answer to the question of how long a good air filter can work.

There are many theories about how many grams of pollution are contained in a cubic meter of air in certain conditions. Based on this, knowing the engine power and calculating the amount of air consumed by it, it is theoretically easy to calculate how long a particular filter will work under given conditions. But in practice, a truck today can travel on clean roads Germany, and tomorrow to visit a warehouse located on a dirt site, and therefore it is almost impossible to assess the real “contribution” of dust from different sections of the road to filter contamination.

However, the dust capacity of the filter is very high, but soot can "kill" it quickly. Therefore, we repeat, the air intake should never be placed near the exhaust pipe.

It is also undesirable to locate the air intake and the air filter housing in places where dust, dirt and water are likely to escape from under the wheels of the vehicle: in this case, among other things, moisture can enter the filter housing, causing the paper to swell and increase its resistance to air. By the way, it is for this reason that some complain that in rainy weather the engine starts to work poorly.

However, it is almost impossible to determine the performance of the filter by eye. A completely clogged filter may look perfectly functional, while a working one may seem completely unusable.

There are developments to extend the life of the filter due to the presence of pre-cleaning systems. One of these systems (developed by Cummins Filtration) is a fixed plastic impeller, which, depending on the version, can be located both on the filter element itself and inside the filter housing. Due to the turbulence of the intake air created by the impeller, most of the heavy particles under the influence centrifugal force is thrown to the walls of the hull and collected at the bottom. Thus, already pre-cleaned air passes through the filter element.

Solid particles collected at the bottom of the filter can be removed without opening the filter housing, but only by removing the rubber cone in its lower part, in which dirt accumulates. Once the dirt has been removed, it is very important that the cone is properly reinstalled so that the air circulation in the filter housing is not interrupted.

Filters of a similar design are supplied both to the conveyor as standard and to the secondary market.

How often should the filter be replaced?

Currently, in the intake system of heavy vehicles, as a rule, two air filters are installed - the main and secondary, which is more correctly called a safety filter. Many mistakenly believe that the primary filter with a paper filter element is a filter coarse cleaning, while the secondary (felt) is the main one. In fact, if the efficiency of a conventional paper filter is more than 99.9%, then for a secondary one it is only 80 ... Therefore, it is recommended to change the secondary filter twice as often as the main one. The task of the secondary filter is to temporarily retain the contamination accumulated on the main filter element in case of damage.

Most companies make safety filters out of paper. The characteristics of the cheaper paper used in secondary filters are significantly worse, and therefore their efficiency is in any case less than that of the main ones.

So, it is basically impossible to determine by eye when it is necessary to change the filter. For this, there are special sensors that show the resistance created by this filter. Such sensors are installed at the filter outlet. Now on our market there are several types of mechanical sensors with a scale in millimeters and inches of water column (American origin affects).

It is generally believed that the air filter should be changed when its resistance during intake tract reaches a level of 25 inches (635 mm) w.c. Art. At the same time, many gauges only have a scale of up to 20 inches. This is due to the fact that resistance is created not only on the filter, but throughout the entire intake tract.

There are two types of such sensors - simpler mechanical and more expensive electromechanical. Depending on the connection and where the pressure control will be carried out, the indicating device itself can be installed both directly on the filter housing, and on the instrument panel or in another convenient location, since it is often quite difficult to get to the air filter.

Human factor

As already mentioned, a serious problem is the human factor. On the one hand, this is the selection of the filter itself, and on the other hand, the right approach to its replacement. Many plastic and metal cases are made with latches. The upper latch is easily accessible, but it is difficult to get close to the lower one, and after replacing the filter, some mechanics, especially if they are not in the mood, are too lazy to close the far latch, and then air is sucked in this place, which enters the engine in an uncleaned form.

Naturally, manufacturers did not leave this unattended and carried out another evolution of air filters. So, to reduce the influence of the human factor, instead of latches, a new mechanism for fixing the housing cover was invented - the so-called “twist”, when the filter cover is screwed on and automatically fixed with a latch. In this case, by clicking it is always easy to make sure that the air filter cover is closed correctly, and it is easy to remove it. New development allowed to change the design of the filter element itself. True, at present this development is supplied mainly to assembly plants, and to secondary market Such filters are still available in limited quantities.

To increase resource

So, when a resistance of 25 inches of water is reached. Art. the filter must be replaced, but a new filter also has an initial resistance of about 8 inches, or 200 mm w.c. Art. And the working range is respectively 17 inches, or 430 mm of water. Art. Therefore, in order to increase the service life of the filters, work was carried out to reduce them. initial resistance by 25% (up to 6 inches, or 150 mm of water column) while maintaining the same air purification efficiency.

In a radial filter, the amount of paper is limited by its outer diameter. The surface area of the paper can only be increased by increasing the cross-sectional area of the filter element, which can only be done by decreasing it. landing diameter. However, if the flow area is reduced, then the amount of air supplied to the engine will be reduced. Therefore, Cummins Filtration increased the bore diameter while increasing the depth of the friezes by gluing them from the seat end. This technology is patented under the name OptiAir and is currently used by several companies, including Eastern Europe. The case of this design is completely plastic, which meets current trends in the filter market: despite the fact that the preparation of the production of plastic housings is much more expensive than metal ones, the final product is cheaper.

The great advantage of the development of OptiAir is that, thanks to the increased cross section, it is possible to reduce dimensions filter element, while fully preserving specifications standard filter. That is, on vehicles with a small engine compartment, especially for the same loaders, you can install a reduced modification this filter. In this case, the housing is initially equipped with an impeller that provides primary cyclone air purification.

In addition, special pre-cleaners have been developed for operation in conditions of high dust content in the air, which can significantly reduce the amount of dust and other contaminants entering the main filter element, and thereby extend its service life.

VAZ-2114 is a very popular car in Russia. Despite leaving series production, the machine is actively used by our compatriots. One of the main advantages this car- high maintainability and low cost of maintenance. AvtoVAZ still produces spare parts for this model. The air filter for the VAZ-2114 was no exception. We will talk about it in our article.

Purpose

As you know, the engine needs a certain amount of fuel to run. But without oxygen, the duty cycle will not occur. Therefore, gasoline is pre-mixed with air.

The latter is absorbed from the atmosphere. But we all know that the air in the streets is full of dirt. Therefore, in order not to damage the motor, a filter is provided in the design of the car.

Principle of operation

After the exhaust stroke, the piston in the cylinders moves to bottom dead center. A vacuum is created in the engine. In this case, the timing mechanism opens the valve through which oxygen enters. And he is literally sucked into the cylinders, since the pressure in them is below atmospheric.

On turbocharged engines, air is forced in. But we are considering the design of the 14th Lada, where there are no turbines and compressors. So, when creating a negative pressure, air penetrates through the pores of the filter. They are small enough and able to purify oxygen from dirt and dust. Then it passes through the pipe of the VAZ-2114 air filter into the intake manifold. After that, the air is already mixed with fuel and injected into the cylinder.

Types

There are two types of described elements:

  1. Frame. This is the name of the air filter enclosed in the housing. VAZ-2114 is equipped with such a cleaner from the factory. This is the standard design. The filter itself is a paper element. rectangular shape. You can see it in the photo in the article. The paper forms a kind of corrugation of the air filter. VAZ-2114 also has a body, consisting of two parts. It is made of plastic and fastened with screws.
  2. Frameless. Another name is filter zero resistance. It is installed abnormally and, unlike the first type, is subject to reusable use. The element is based on thin paper impregnated with an oily liquid.

What is it for? The thickness of the paper in the zero resistance filter is much smaller. Therefore, the air is not able to properly cleanse itself, passing through its pores. In this regard, impregnation is provided. Thanks to it, dirt sticks to the outer walls of the filter. It does not penetrate further into the engine. For greater rigidity, this element can be reinforced with mesh.

Resource

The manufacturer claims that the replacement of the air filter on the VAZ-2114 should be done every 15 thousand kilometers. But these data can still vary significantly, depending on the operating conditions. Yes, in winter time the filter becomes dirty already by 7 thousand km. Therefore, it is better to change it at the same time as the oil. Experienced motorists recommend doing this operation at intervals of 10 thousand kilometers.

Also note that the air filter on the VAZ-2114 is consumable. There is no point in blowing it out - it's a useless exercise. The element is replaced entirely with a new one. Moreover, its price is only about 150-200 rubles.

About the Nulevik resource

But as for the frameless "nuleviks", they are subject to cleaning. This is done every 10 thousand kilometers. But you need to know how to do it right. You can not just remove and rinse the part under water. It won't have any effect.

First, the element is treated with a special impregnation (dry, without soaking). Next, you need to wait a while (usually 10 minutes) and rinse the element in water. It is not necessary to re-treat with impregnation. After drying, the element is ready for reuse.

But please note that the FTS should be installed only after complete drying, otherwise water will get in into the cylinders. To speed up the process, you can use a home hair dryer.

signs

If you do not change the air filter for a VAZ-2114 for a long time, it may experience the following problems:

  1. Reduced engine power.
  2. Increase in fuel consumption.
  3. Gaps in acceleration.
  4. Unstable operation of the engine at idle.
  5. Prolonged warm-up of the engine.

At clogged filter the car stops pulling normally. Of course, the car owner will not like this. Therefore, you need to be guided by mileage. After 10 thousand, the car needs to change both the oil and the air filter.

VAZ-2114: do-it-yourself filter change

It is worth noting that the replacement procedure is quite simple, and even beginners can handle it:

  • So, open the hood and find the air filter housing. It is located to the right of the engine.
  • Next, we need to unscrew the four screws around the perimeter of the plastic cover.
  • Then the body rises up. A dirty air filter will be visible in front of us. They are not fixed by anything - the element just sits in the grooves of the cover. Therefore, we take it out with our hands and install a new element in the same way.
  • It is recommended that you first clean the inside of the case from dust. To do this, use a soft cloth soaked in gasoline or glass cleaner. Make sure that the edges of the filter ( orange color) were strictly in their grooves.
  • The element is installed corrugated down. After making sure that the filter is tightly installed in the housing, close the lid.
  • It is better to tighten the screws "crosswise".

This completes the replacement of the air filter.

When performing any repair or maintenance operations, write down all actions in the logbook (ordinary notebook), indicating the type of work and the mileage on which they were made. It is very difficult to keep everything in your head - sometimes you can forget about the mileage at which the filter, oil and other consumables were replaced.

Oil in the air filter on the VAZ-2114: what to do?

Sometimes when replacing, you can see traces of oil on the surface of the filter.

This bad sign. In this case, the following problems are possible:

  • Critical wear of piston wheels (in particular, oil scrapers). Thus, the system has high blood pressure oil, and it is squeezed out through the ventilation valve.
  • Clogged oil deflector drain. Because of this, oil particles cannot return back to the crankcase.
  • Outlet hose clogged crankcase gases. It goes right into the intake manifold. With normal ventilation, gases move from the crankcase to the throttle. In this case, a small oil coating is allowed on the walls of the pipe. But if the hose is clogged, the pressure in the system will increase. Oil will begin to flow from all openings, including getting on the air filter. Way out of the situation - cleaning or replacement. On a muffled motor, it should be blown only in one direction.
  • The air filter is dirty. Oddly enough, but the dirty element itself can cause this phenomenon. Why is this happening? The motor does not have enough air, which is why it begins to suck it from any source. Such can be a crankcase with oil vapor. This problem is solved by installing a new air filter.

In order for the car engine to work stably with maximum performance, it needs a high-quality fuel mixture. One of critical devices involved in its formation is an air filter - an indispensable element of any engine, be it gasoline or diesel. It is he who provides the carburetor or injector with air, cleaning it from moisture and dust.

In this article we will talk about what a VAZ-2110 air filter is, and also consider the process of installing it.

Why you need a filter

Both gasoline and diesel engines can work fine without an air filtration device, but how long will it last? The smallest particles of dust, dirt and moisture, if they enter the engine cylinders, will eventually begin to destroy rubbing parts.

In addition, the fuel mixture, which will include moisture and various debris, will not only not provide sufficient power, but will also cause the carburetor, injector, injectors, etc. to fail soon.

Where is the air filter element located and what is it

The VAZ-2110 air filter is located in the engine compartment of the car. Depending on the type of engine, its housing may have different kind. In carburetor engines, it is made of metal and has a round shape. The VAZ-2110 air filter (injector) is placed in a rectangular plastic case.

The filter element itself also has a different shape: for a carburetor it is round, for an injector it is rectangular. It is made from a special porous material compressed into an accordion.

The filter housing for injection models is connected to the engine by means of a corrugation. This is a kind of air duct through which the already purified air enters the device, where the fuel mixture is formed. The corrugation of the VAZ-2110 air filter is a thick corrugated rubber hose. For carburetor models, the filter element housing is installed directly on the carburetor.

When to replace the filter

Naturally, the filter element someday becomes unusable and needs to be replaced. For VAZ-2110 cars, the manufacturer strongly recommends replacing it after every 20 thousand kilometers. If the machine is operated in conditions of increased pollution, it is better to carry out this procedure after 10 thousand km, when the engine oil is changed and

It also happens that the VAZ-2110 air filter becomes unsuitable for further work much earlier. In carburetor engines, for example, it can be flooded with oil if they fail and cease to cope with their task. In addition, the filter may suffer from mechanical damage, fuel or water ingress on it. In these cases, it must be replaced immediately.

Features of choice

Picking up an air filter VAZ-2110 today is not a problem. To do this, you do not even need to take it with you to the store or to the market. It is enough to tell the seller the car model and type or injector), and he will offer you a choice of several products from different manufacturers.

Let us immediately indicate that the best option would be the original filter element manufactured by AvtoVAZ, but you can also purchase and install worthy analogues, such as Bosch, Mann or Filtron.

Air filter VAZ-2110: dimensions

In case you come across an incompetent seller, it will not be superfluous to know the sizes of filters for different types of motors.

For carbureted engine (round):

  • height - 62 mm;
  • outer diameter - 232 mm;
  • inner diameter - 182 mm.

For injection engine (rectangular):

  • width - 213 mm;
  • length - 213 mm;
  • height - 58-60 mm.

Filter element with zero resistance

There is another type of filter element for injection engines - a filter with zero air resistance. This is a kind of tuning element designed to improve air intake. element here practically does not resist the incoming air. This significantly increases the power and throttle response of the engine. But this tuning has three drawbacks:

  • the price of "nulevik" is significantly higher than that of a conventional filter;
  • high fuel consumption;
  • the need for replacement after every 5-7 thousand run.

Installation of the VAZ-2110 filter (injection engine)

Now let's figure out how to install the air filter yourself, which is required for this.

Tools:

  • Phillips screwdriver;
  • key for 10;
  • damp cloth or sponge to remove dust;
  • new filter.

We install the car on a flat surface, open the hood, disconnect the negative terminal from the battery, find the filter element housing and the corrugation going to the engine in the engine compartment.

At the back of the case there is a branch pipe of the VAZ-2110 air filter, on which a corrugation is put on. There is a connector on it. Disconnect this connector. We loosen the clamp on the pipe and disconnect the corrugation.

Using a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the 4 screws securing the filter housing cover, remove it and set it aside. We remove the spent filter element.

With a damp cloth or sponge, wipe the inside of the case and cover, removing dirt and dust. We put in place a new filter. We install the housing cover, tighten the screws, connect the corrugation, connect the sensor connector. We put the ground terminal on the battery, start the engine, check its operation.

Installing an air filter VAZ-2110 (carburetor)

In cars with a carburetor engine, the procedure for replacing the filter element is much simpler. Of the tools and funds, only 10 and a rag will be needed here.

We install the car on a flat surface, raise the hood, find the filter housing. It has several spring latches that secure the cover. We snap them off and unscrew the nut on the central stud of the cover with a 10 key. Lift the cover, take out the old filter element, throw it away. We remove dirt and dust from the inner surface of the case with a rag.

Installing a new filter. We close the housing cover, tighten the nut, fix it with latches.

Do-it-yourself installation of a zero-resistance filter

The installation process of the "nulevik" is also quite simple and can be done independently. This will require a set of keys and a Phillips screwdriver.

Under the hood we find the VAZ-2110 air filter housing. Disconnect the ground terminal on the battery. Disconnect the MAF connector. Loosen the clamp screw with a screwdriver and remove the corrugation going to the engine.

With a 10 wrench (preferably a socket wrench), we unscrew the nuts securing the DMRV to the filter housing. We dismantle the filter housing and remove it.

Using a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the screw securing the ground wire to the cylinder head. Under this screw, we install the mounting bracket that comes with the filter. We mount the sensor to the bracket using a 10 bolt. The connection must be rigid enough, otherwise the MAF will fail due to vibration.

We attach the corrugation to the back of the sensor and fix it by clamping the clamp. On the front of the DMRV, we put on the filter itself and press its nozzle with a clamp. We connect the sensor connector, connect the terminal.

  1. Change the air filter on time, because the stability of the engine and fuel consumption depend on its condition.
  2. Inspect the filter element for its condition at least twice a month.
  3. In cars with a carbureted engine, pay attention to the cleanliness of the filter housing. If oil or a whitish emulsion appears in it, then it's time to clean the breather or change the oil scraper rings. In this case, the filter must be replaced.
  4. Do not buy cheap filter elements of dubious origin. It is better to contact a specialized store, where you will not only be selected a suitable model, but will also be advised on its proper installation.
  5. You should not set "nulevik" just like that. If you are not a racer or street racer, limit yourself to simple models filter elements.
