In this review, we will focus on the youngest SUV among its counterparts, namely the Hummer H3 model.
A bit from the history of the Hummer SUV
At the heart of the civilian SUV is the base of the HMMWV military vehicle. The project was launched in 1979, then 15 basic, basic variants of an SUV for the military were developed, and already in 1981 the car was adopted by the United States. The main criteria for an SUV during development were increased cross-country ability, small dimensions (as for a military vehicle), transportability and versatility in order to convert an SUV to various needs at any time.
Given the popularity of the military SUV among civilians, in 1992, General Motors (GM) launched the production of a civilian version of the SUV, called the Hummer H1. From the military version, the civilian version differed in minimal details, since it was based on the same platform as the military HMMWV.
The Hummer H2 SUV model has become more cultivated, smooth shapes and thoughtful interior have attracted more buyers. The latest development was the Hummer H3 model, which differs from the H2 model in smaller sizes and slightly different individual parts of the body. It’s sad to say, but today the production of the civilian Hummer SUV by General Motors has been completely suspended. The plant officially stopped production of SUVs on May 24, 2010, but the last Hummer H3 rolled off the assembly line in Louisiana on May 26, 2010.
From 2006 to 2009, at the Avtotor Kaliningrad plant, Hummer H2 and H3 were assembled in small batches. According to automotive statistics, at the beginning of 2010, there were about 5,000 registered Hummer SUVs of various models in Russia, of which 1,528 copies were in Moscow, that is, in fact, this is every third SUV of this brand. To understand in more detail what the Hummer H3 civil-military SUV is, we will consider its characteristics, equipment, as well as the cost of the car.
The exterior of the legendary Hummer H3
Production of the Hummer H3 model started in 2005 and lasted until May 26, 2010. Externally, the Hummer SUV cannot be confused with any other SUV or brand. Strict appearance and a huge, ribbed chrome grille (although other grille options are possible). The shape of the body is chopped with minimal rounded lines. During production, two modifications were released, this is an ordinary station wagon, also known as the H3, and a pickup truck, referred to as the H3T.
The radiator grille occupy the entire upper part of the front end of the SUV, capturing the end part of the front fenders. The front optics are round and based on halogens, left and right, at the end of the front fenders there are turn signals that are clearly visible at a long distance. Under the grille and up to half of the Hummer H3 wheels, there is a massive bumper with well-defined engine protection.
Under the front optics, the designers placed a slightly smaller front foglights, separated by an additional engine airflow grille and a characteristic Hummer inscription in its upper part. The lower part of the bumper, as a rule, is decorated with two hooks. Depending on the configuration, the front of the Hummer H3 may change slightly, but the basic shapes and features are still preserved. The hood is typical for all SUVs of this family. Strict features, with a huge air intake in the central part.
The side of the Hummer H3 is expressive in its own way. Huge convex wheel arches immediately indicate the direction of the cross-country SUV. The rear bumper has also changed its shape, for a pickup it will be with a side step, and for a regular H3 with a central recess for the spare tire.

The reputation of the car, especially in Russia, was simply stunning, many wanted to buy this car. Subsequently, Toyota released the FJ Cruiser, which in some parts resembled the already well-known Hummer H2 or H3. It is a pity to mention once again that the SUV was discontinued, and there are no plans to return it back.

The interior of the Hummer H3 SUV is quite simple and not crammed with various unnecessary features. The front panel is rough in shape, made of high-quality plastic and very spacious, as for an SUV. The designers took the central part at the top for two air ducts and an emergency parking button. Immediately below them is the control panel for airbags and seat belt control.
The very center of the front panel is reserved for the multimedia system. At that time it was quite one of the most modern, but today it is a primitive system with a color display. For the basic configuration of the Hummer H3, an audio system is installed in this place.
Below the audio system (multimedia system) is the air conditioning panel, regardless of the configuration of the Hummer H3, it will be standard with three knobs, the first is the temperature selection, the second fan speed and the third is the direction of the air supply.

Minimalism is seen around the entire perimeter of the Hummer H3, unlike the "stuffed" H2 and H1. The central rear-view mirror was made interesting, the SUV was equipped with a rear-view camera as a standard and the camera image is displayed in the corner of the mirror, and not on the central display, as is now customary. The third and most powerful unit installed on the Hummer H3 Alpha modification is 5.3 liters. Unlike the previous two engines, this unit is already V8 and is installed longitudinally, relative to the car itself. Power is 305 horses, with a maximum torque of 430 Nm. Since the SUV was produced at the start of the development of various active security systems, it makes no sense to talk about a large number. The interior design is original, but as simple as possible, which in general is what is needed for this class of car. The dynamism of the Hummer H3, as for an SUV, is excellent and shows good technical characteristics.
Great Wall Hover H3 debuted in 2010. Hover H3 is a deep restyling of the Hover car. Externally, the H3 is not very different from its predecessor. The front and rear bumpers have been changed to a darker shade. Slightly expanded moldings, the contours of the wing have inconspicuously changed. The front turn signals have moved from the wings to the rear-view mirrors, and the “dead zone” has been noticeably expanded on the driver's mirror. The rear number is now illuminated not from the sides, but from above, and between the backlights there is a hole for installing a rear-view camera. The new radiator grill fits into the overall design more organically than its predecessor. The changes declared by the company in the optics of the headlights are unlikely to be noticed with the naked eye. Large optics, a massive chrome-plated false radiator grille, a wide mouth of the air intake - Hover looks like it should be for a serious SUV.
In the work on the interior, some shortcomings of the previous model were taken into account and eliminated. The interior trim used hard black plastic with leatherette inserts. Under the hood of the Great Wall Hover H3 is a two-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine from Mitsubishi with a capacity of 122 hp. (at 5250 rpm). The front suspension of the Hover H3 is an independent torsion bar, double wishbone, the rear is a dependent spring. To withstand moderate off-road, the Hover has a plug-in all-wheel drive (the rest of the time the Hover H3 is rear-wheel drive) and reduction gears. The minimum clearance is at least 18 centimeters. Add to this a 600-litre trunk that can turn into a 2326-litre with the rear seats folded down, and you have a real workhorse for all kinds of tourist trips.
One of the most popular Chinese frame SUVs is still the Great Wall Hover H3. High sales and class leadership are amazing, but if you look in more detail, the car has the elements to achieve high sales.
The SUV was released in 2010, and 4 years later the manufacturer released a restyled version, which we will pay more attention to in this review. At the moment, the machine is out of production, so it will not work to buy it new.
Appearance
The design of the car looks much better than its competitors, despite the fact that the Great Wall Hover H3 is almost completely copied from the Isuzu Axiom. Russian users choose this car because it looks better than the domestic UAZ Patriot.
The front end is distinguished by a massive bumper, elegantly emphasizing large optics and a chrome grille. Restyling is distinguished by a different bumper, modified optics and a new huge grille.
The profile view attracts the eye with massive wheel arch extensions. The restyling Hover H3 changes the lower part, a black molding and a different threshold appear. On the roof of both versions, roof rails flaunt, which are not decorative in nature.
The back of the SUV is highlighted by high optics going up to the roof. The shape of the headlights did not change much during the modernization. Trunk lid with some curves and chrome trim. Previously, the interior of an SUV had a lot of buttons and details, but peering you understand that it is still ascetic. Restyling is already more interesting, leather upholstery appeared, of course the skin is not the best, but already nice. There were inserts under the tree on the dashboard and door skins.
5 seats - comfortable seats, the front ones have mechanical adjustments in several directions, expensive equipment received electrical adjustment. There is a lot of free space, due to the size of the body. Heating will be only at the front row.
Unfortunately, the leather steering column of the new Hover H3 will not receive heating, it is 4-spice and has audio buttons on the airbag cover. Dashboard - large dial gauges for the speedometer and tachometer, as well as two dual small gauges for oil pressure and fuel level. Not without an on-board computer.
The center console has become much better looking, a monitor will appear at the top to receive information about the time and temperature overboard. Under the air deflectors there is a large touchscreen display of the multimedia system; in the top configuration, data from the rear view camera is displayed there. In the lower part there is a climate control unit with washers, buttons and a monitor.
The gear selector area of the Great Wall New Hover H3 is trimmed with a woodgrain insert. Behind the handle are cup holders and a mechanical handbrake. The armrest is good, roomy, the only complaint about it is that the USB port is located in it, which is not ergonomic.
The trunk is not the largest in the class - 420 liters, some sedans have the same volume. Of course, when folding the rear sofa, it turns out already 2020 liters of volume. A full-size spare tire is bolted to the bottom of the SUV.
Specifications
Cars are equipped with Mitsubishi engines, there are two of them in the line and both are gasoline, the pre-styling model was with only one engine.
- The base 4G69S4N engine produces 116 horsepower and 175 units of torque with its 2-liter displacement. The naturally aspirated engine was developed in collaboration with the Japanese brand, it consumes only 13 liters in the urban cycle. The advertised horsepower was 6 horses higher, which is strange.
- The second version of the internal combustion engine is built on the basis of the previous one, here there is a different fuel system and turbine. The motor is called 4G69S4T and produces 150 horsepower and 250 H*m of torque. In fact, the engine produces 177 horses, the figures are underestimated according to the documents on the Russian market. The motor consumes about 11 liters in the city.
Only mechanics are a couple, the first Great Wall Hover H3 engine works in conjunction with a 5-speed manual transmission, the second with a 6-speed one. Technically, the boxes are different, the first one misbehaved off-road, constantly overheated and burned the clutch. Torque is transmitted to the front wheels, and the rear wheels receive it through the BW 47-60 transfer case.
The frame SUV Great Wall Hover H3 stands on an independent torsion bar suspension, a rear dependent circuit on springs. Both axles are complemented by anti-roll bars. It turned out that off-road the car behaves perfectly, calmly competing with the rest, but on the track the maneuverability leaves much to be desired. It is worth noting a good disc brake system with full ventilation and ABS and EBD systems.
Hover H3 price
The manufacturer offered 5 complete sets, each of which differs in internal equipment. The basic version of Luxe started with a price tag in 785,000 rubles and it included:

- power steering;
- heated front seats;
- fabric upholstery;
- fog optics;
- rain and light sensors;
- conventional audio system with CD and USB.
The top version Turbo Super Luxe cost 840 000 rubles, which is a little more expensive, while additional equipment pleased much more:

As a result of the review, the Great Wall Hover H3 is an excellent SUV for the money, there is little that can get around it off-road in this price segment. In terms of interior and comfort, of course, there are better cars, but they will lose in other aspects. The model is not without drawbacks, such as the lack of power in the first internal combustion engine, the difficulty of finding spare parts and repairmen, and not enough comfort.

The Hummer H3 SUV was the most compact in the Hummer lineup, for which it was even nicknamed the "Baby Hummer" in the US. Despite this, the Hummer H3 was no less popular than its older brothers Hummer H1 and H2. The release of the “third Hummer” started in 2005, although the premiere of this mid-size SUV took place back in 2003. In Russia, the Hummer H3 was assembled in Kaliningrad, but the H3 era ended in 2010 with the closure of the Hummer brand.
The Hummer H3 is very similar in appearance to the H2, but has a smaller amount of chrome decor and smaller dimensions. The body length of the Hammer H3 is 4742 mm, the wheelbase is 2842 mm, the width is limited to 2172 mm including mirrors and 1900 mm without mirrors, and the height fits into the framework of 1895 mm. The ride height (clearance) of the Hummer H3 SUV is 230 mm. The minimum curb weight does not exceed 2130 kg, but in higher trim levels it can increase to 2231 kg.
Salon Hammer H3 has five seats and a high level of equipment. In the interior decoration of the SUV, only high quality materials were used, including soft plastic, decorative metal inserts and leather. The interior, in particular the front panel, is decorated quite simply, which opened up wide opportunities for independent tuning of the interior, which, in fact, was successfully used by most of the owners of the Hummer H3.
Unlike older brothers, the H3 had a less capacious trunk, which in the base was capable of swallowing no more than 835 liters of cargo, but with the second row of seats folded down, it grew to 1577 liters.
In 2008, the Hammer H3 underwent a restyling, in which the exterior of the car was slightly retouched, and the interior was also improved. In addition, the list of optional equipment has noticeably expanded, in which, in particular, a rear-view camera and an entertainment system for passengers in the rear row of seats have appeared.
Specifications. During its history, the Hummer H3 has tried on three power plants. Initially, the SUV was offered with two engine options.
The role of the junior was played by a turbocharged in-line 5-cylinder engine of the Vortec family with a displacement of 3.5 liters (3464 cm3) and a distributed fuel injection system. Its maximum power did not exceed 223 hp at 5600 rpm, and the peak torque was at around 305 Nm, developed at 2800 rpm. The younger motor was aggregated only with a 5-speed “mechanics”, which allowed accelerating to a maximum of 180 km / h or accelerating from 0 to 100 km / h in just 10.0 seconds. As for fuel consumption, in urban operation the engine "ate" about 14.7 liters of AI-95 gasoline.
The senior engine at the initial stage of sales was also a 5-cylinder Vortec unit with a turbocharger and distributed fuel injection, but already with a displacement of 3.7 liters (3653 cm3). Its peak power was recorded at around 245 hp, developed at 5600 rpm, and the torque at 4600 rpm reached 328 Nm. As a gearbox for this motor, a basic 5-speed “mechanics” or an optional 4-band “automatic” were offered. From the first checkpoint, the Hummer H3 SUV was able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 9.8 seconds, while eating about 11.2 liters for every 100 km in the city. With automatic transmission, the starting acceleration was within the same 9.8 seconds, but fuel consumption increased to 14.7 liters.
In 2008, the line of engines was replenished with a new flagship. They became an 8-cylinder V-shaped unit with a displacement of 5.3 liters (5327 cm3). The flagship was able to squeeze out 305 hp. power at 5200 rpm, as well as about 434 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm. These opportunities were quite enough for starting acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 8.2 seconds or reaching a maximum speed of 165 km / h with an average gas mileage in the city at the level of 18.1 liters. The flagship engine was aggregated only with a 4-band "automatic" Hydra-Matic 4L60, which has electronic control.
Like the older Hummers, the Hummer H3 mid-size SUV was built on the basis of a frame platform and had an all-wheel drive system, which, after restyling, received the option of installing a front locking differential.
