Convertible sales to start in Russia by summer season smart fortwo which was introduced in September 2015. The serial production of the model started almost a year ago at an enterprise in the French Ambach, but the car will be brought to us only at the beginning summer season when the demand for convertibles revives. As in the case of the standard two-door, the convertible will receive atmospheric liter engine 71 hp and a 90-horsepower 0.9-liter turbo engine paired with a five-speed “mechanics” or a Twinamic preselective box. The fabric top fortwo cabrio, which can be ordered in contrasting colors, has one intermediate position in addition to the closed and open positions.
Prices for the model have not yet been announced, but it can be assumed that the novelty will remain one of the most affordable convertibles on the Russian market, where the choice of such cars is very small. In Russia there is none open machine mass brands, Mini convertibles and roadsters have left the market, and the offer is limited exclusively to models of traditional premium brands. In the segment up to 4.5 million rubles. there are a dozen models that can be obtained by the summer.

Modern cars are produced with a variety of body styles. Their designation is not always the same, in some cases there are several interpretations. In our article, we will analyze the main body types of cars.
Car bodies: their purpose and types
ATTENTION! Found a completely simple way to reduce fuel consumption! Don't believe? An auto mechanic with 15 years of experience also did not believe until he tried it. And now he saves 35,000 rubles a year on gasoline!
Over the past 20 years, auto designers from advanced countries have managed to introduce many original body varieties into production. Increasingly, there are those that combine the selected qualities of several car bodies. If earlier there were much fewer of them, today the number of individual body types has not only increased, but they have become a decisive link in determining the price and size of the produced car.
15 examples of modern bodywork passenger car– this number is called by experts. And not every fan can boast of knowing the names modern bodies, their purpose, advantages and disadvantages.
What determines the body, why is it so important and why do you need so much different types? All motorists know that the body is the main element of the car, which determines its shape and makes it possible to transport people, goods, and so on. It depends on the body how many passengers fit in the cabin, what can be put in the trunk, etc.
If we consider grouping body models in the automotive industry specifically, the differences relate to the following:
- destinations;
- design features;
- Load parameter;
- Kits, layouts, and so on.
Note. You should be aware that the "passenger cars" bodies are passenger frameless or semi-framed design.
As for the layout of the body, the following types are distinguished today:
- 1-volumetric, which imply the location of passengers, luggage and motor in a single spatial volume;
- 2-volume, implying the presence of luggage and people in the cabin, and the internal combustion engine under the hood. These body types are characterized convenient sizes and the presence of a large, roomy luggage compartment;
- 3-volume. IN this case in the cabin, people are provided, under the hood - the motor, and the trunk is intended for cargo. They are considered to be less versatile among other body types, since their transformation is limited to a protruding front and rear.
As for the degree of loading:
- Distinguish load-bearing body designed to take all loads;
- A semi-supporting body is distinguished, which perceives only those loads that fall on the frame;
- Distinguish unloaded body, perceiving only the cargo and the mass of passengers.
Body types: closed and open
Category of cars with a closed body
This group includes the classic sedan, hatchback and its subtypes, limousine, coupe, minivan and other cars that imply a closed design.
Sedan
The most common sedan body style. It can be 2 or 4 doors, although in some cases 5 doors. Among distinctive features of this body we note:
- Mandatory presence of two full-size rows of seats;
- The trunk of sedans is structurally separated from the passenger compartment, the car does not have a rear lift door;
- The sedan is a typical 3-volume body.
Sedans are named, by right, classic cars and today they are in production line most automakers. Their popularity is great among consumers, it is difficult for cars with a different type of body to compete with them.
Sedans can be assembled on an extended base. In this case, they are marked with the letter L and designated as a luxury class.
Note. Tudor can be attributed to additional varieties of sedan. This is a design equipped with 2 doors, but differs from the coupe in the presence of 2 full-size rows of seats. Our legendary Zaporozhets also belongs to such machines.
hatchback
2-volume cargo-passenger body hatchback, equipped with 2nd, 5th or less often 3rd doors. This closed body type is characterized by the following parameters:
- It has a rear door and differs from the station wagon in a shorter rear overhang;
- The tailgate of hatchbacks always has a slight slope;
- Considered the most popular body types in Europe. There they are produced in almost any class;
- Among the main advantages of hatchbacks are their compactness compared to sedans and maneuverability compared to station wagons.
Hatchbacks are easy to transform if you take them off. rear shelf closing luggage compartment. Having folded additionally rear seats, we get a roomy extra space.
Note. It is customary to call microvans a kind of hatchback subtype. However, the name does not mean that these cars are smaller. On the contrary, this is an enlarged sample of a hatchback with a spacious interior. Recently it has become more and more popular in Russia.
station wagon
The station wagon has the same door options as the hatchback. Features of the following order distinguish it:
- This is a cargo-passenger 2-volume body, assembled on the basis of a sedan, only with the presence tailgate like a hatchback. The rear overhang of station wagons is similar to the sedan or made even longer;
- The trunk of the station wagon is always large and combined with the interior.
Note. To easily turn passenger station wagon in the cargo-passenger, it is enough to fold the rear seats.
For the first time, the station wagon was released by the legendary Ford company. From modern cars Russian car industry these include Lada Largus.
liftback
Liftback is a body type that is a cross between a hatchback, station wagon and sedan. Stands out:
- From a hatchback - a longer rear;
- From the rest of the 2-volume structures - a special slope of the roof (Skoda Octavia).
Note. There is an opinion that the secret of high sales of liftbacks is their similarity with a sedan.
coupe
Another body type that belongs to this category is called a coupe. Differs in the following features:
- The presence of only one row of seats (if the coupe is equipped with a second row of seats, then the place is always with poor capacity - 0.93 cubic meters of free zone);
- 3-volume cars of this type often look like sports cars, although there are also luxury executive coupe models (Porsche 911, Cadillac Eldorado).
Similarity to sport coupe and gives the oblique silhouette of the roof at the back. Cars with a coupe body type are very elegant and prestigious, but it is difficult to call them comfortable because of the tightness.
Limousine
The limousine is also closed types 3-dimensional body. Here are its features:
- This is the car of the highest executive class, assembled on the basis of a sedan, but with a longer wheelbase;
- Limousines always have a partition behind the front seat, but long-wheelbase sedans do not.
Limousines are produced with 4-doors, several rows of seats are provided in the cabin.
Minivan
A minivan is 1-volume, less often 2-volume. Here are its features:
- The body of this car is a cross between a station wagon and a small bus (often referred to as a high-capacity station wagon);
- The door to the second row of seats is usually sliding;
- Minivans are also called cabover bodies or a small van (translated from English);
- Minivans can also be equipped with a third row of seats (Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna).
The advantage of minivans is called them dimensions and spaciousness. Ideal family car first released in the 80s.
Note. There is also a body called a compact MPV. This is a kind of middle peasant, similar to both a minivan and a microvan (a copy of a hatchback). These vehicles are equipped with a third row of seats. The exterior of a compact van looks much neater than that of a minivan. A new type of body, which began to be produced only in the early 90s.
SUV
One of the popular cars of the beginning of the new century. Body features as follows:
- 2-volume body is equipped with 5 or 6 overall doors;
- The presence of rows of seats - 2 or 3.
In principle, an SUV is the same station wagon, but it is distinguished by features technical nature: four-wheel drive, huge dimensions and large ground clearance. Ideal car for off-road driving.
crossover
A kind of SUV, but with differences:
- Lower clearance height;
- Great compactness.
Crossovers have been very popular lately. They are increasingly bought for the urban jungle, because compact car makes it easy to maneuver under traffic lights and move even on poor-quality asphalt.
Pickup
3-volume body type with an open cargo area. It refers, rather, to the passenger-and-freight variants of the car, and not to the passenger cars. Differs in the following features:
- The trunk (cargo area) is separated from the cabin by a rigid partition;
- Cars with such a body are super passable.
Favorite workhorses of farmers from America and Australia. The current cars with a similar type of body are mostly assembled on the basis of an SUV.
Category of cars with an open body
This group includes cars such as a convertible, roadster, brogue and others.
Cabriolet
Open automobile 3-volume body. It looks like a coupe, but differs from it by the presence of a soft awning roof that folds behind the rear seats.
Other features:
- The roof is folded so that the doors and side windows remain motionless;
- A striking example of such cars is the Peugeot 206 SS.
Note. It is also customary to distinguish between coupe-cabriolet. These cars have a metal roof instead of an awning, and it folds into the trunk.
Roadster
Open 3-volume body, like a convertible. The following features make it stand out:
- The presence of one row of seats and a soft opening roof;
- A striking example of such cars is the Mini Cooper Roadster.
Phaeton
This is a 4-door body with a folding soft top. Its other features:
- Designed for 5-6 seats;
- Does not have side windows.
Note. Phaetons are often confused with high-end 4-door convertibles.
Brougham
Type of 3-volumetric body, characterized by the following:
- The presence of a closed zone of the top. It is designed for rear passengers;
- The presence of free space above the driver's head.
Coupe de ville, as brogues are often called, is not so popular in our time. But if desired, it is made to order.
Targa
Type of 3-dimensional body, rarely seen on the roads. Distinctive features:
- Considered one of the variants of the 2-seat roadster type Sport, but with a rigid fixation windshield and the presence of a cylindrical frame behind the seats;
- Open, foldable in the trunk, the middle part of the roof. The rear of the top of the body is completely covered with glass;
- A striking example is the Porsche 911 Targa.
Note. Targa is a passenger body equipped with a very powerful middle rack.
In addition to the described open body types, the spider, landau and shooting break are also known.
So, having learned a lot about the types and varieties car bodies, the reader can do right choice. I would like to remind you that in addition to the above information, it would be useful to study articles that describe in detail the advantages and disadvantages of various design features a specific car, as well as instructions for caring for the body with your own hands.
“Each industrial product is connected in a certain way with a person,” Janusz Pawlowski wrote 40 years ago. Oh, and smart uncle, this Polish professor! It was not for nothing that his books on car bodies were published in England itself and engineers were taught from them. It was enough to look at Army General Shoigu, who was taking the parade on Red Square in an open black ZIL - the majestic road battleship, of course, left its mark on the person standing in it. Do you remember how the old dandelion Marya Ivanna, driving an invalid C-3A, towed the unlucky trinity from Coward, Dunce and Experienced to the nearest police station in a fierce snowstorm? Quite a different matter, right? But, by the way, both elegant, like the Palace of Congresses, ZIL-41044, and the Serpukhov motorized carriage with an 8-horsepower motor are equipped the same body. No, not a convertible, but to be exact - a phaeton.
Cadillac V16 452 Convertible Coupe
What is the difference? If by by and large, then there is no difference ... no! IN different countries car bodies are called differently - one "sedan" is worth something: named after a French city, in France itself it received the name of a German city - "berlin". And the current notions, all these hatchbacks, notchbacks, liftbacks and fastbacks are essentially the same sedans, only with a loin part of a different shape. Here is the time to recall Pavlovsky again: "The classification of car bodies is characterized by diversity, uncertainty and often inconsistency with reality." And I must say that in the family of open car bodies, the mentioned uncertainty and inconsistency with reality is perhaps more abrupt than in any other.
Custom bodies built
dozens of companies, often giving them proper names - "Rolls-Royce Trouville Town Car" from the English "Brewster" in 1932
Body visa-a-vee
was very popular in the 19th century. The driver of this 1899 FIAT was sitting in the back, and the passengers were in the front, back to front.
It all started at the end of the 19th century - the inventors of the first self-running carts were so inspired by their mechanical filling that they hardly thought about the shape, that is, the body. At first, riders were seated on open platform with the motor face-to-face ("vis-a-vie" in French) or back-to-back ("dos-a-do"). Or they adapted the engine to the crew already available in the horse yard.
And the first of them was the phaeton - a 2-seater stroller. Very soon, already at the beginning of the 20th century, a back sofa open to all winds was added to the motorized phaeton, doors were adapted to it, then front doors appeared. The resulting body in France and Germany was called a double-phaeton, and in the States - touring.
And off we go! The double phaeton was dubbed the phaeton-sport - either a roadster (road), or a speedster (high-speed), or a runabout (walking), or in a simple way, a two-seater, that is, "2-seat". But very soon, an additional "mother-in-law's place" appeared behind the main seats - the British called it a clover-bodice, "clover leaf". A tonne (“barrel” in French) budded from the phaeton - without side doors, it was possible to exit from the back.
It was through the rear swing door-seat that Shura Balaganov fell out of the "Antelope-Gnu" when the characters of the "Golden Calf" fled from the deceived inhabitants of the glorious city of Luchansk.
Even when it became clear in the second decade of the 20th century that closed body much more comfortable, because it reliably protects riders from rain and snow, dust and immodest glances, numerous semi-open bodies were in good demand - landole (and all its varieties) with a soft top over the rear seats, coupe de ville and brogham - these, on the contrary, were open front.
Convertibles
French coachbuilders on the Delae-MS135 chassis were distinguished by extraordinary grace: Letourmeur & Marchand 1947, Figoni et Falaschi 1938
It was then that the convertible was born. But here's what's curious: unlike the modern concept of a convertible, it was a 4-door body, a removable top covered only rear seats and the driver was in the fresh air all the time. And only the conduit-cabriolet (or coupe-cabriolet in England) was the 2-door car familiar to us.
It is interesting that the French word “conduite” in relation to a car body means, as we wrote 30-40 years ago, “with internal control”, or more precisely, intended for a driver, and not for driving with a hired driver.
« The classification of car bodies is characterized by diversity, uncertainty and often inconsistency with reality" Janusz Pavlovsky, 1974
But during the Great Depression, all this diversity quickly faded away. The fact is that a closed body suits a car much better, and from almost any point of view. It is stronger and tougher, which means it has greater survivability and reliability, and provides better handling.
A striking example
mother-in-law is this Playboy Roadster on a 1927 Rolls-Royce Phantom chassis
But most importantly, it is much cheaper to manufacture. When in 1928 the American firm "Budd" applied a patent for an all-metal body made of large stamped parts containing window and door openings, all kinds of exotic, all these landole, cabrio-limousines, coupe de ville and Berlin-transformable were doomed - for mass production they didn't fit.
Only a few have survived to this day. This is a 2-seater roadster (the Americans also call it a spider), a 4-seater 2-door convertible, a 4-door phaeton. However, if you call front ZIL phaeton, there is no mistake in this. Of course, saying (and even more so writing!) “a car with a removable top” is long and tedious, it’s much easier to use a beautiful foreign word. Such, for example, as convertible - “opening”.
Now many new convertibles have left the Russian market. The devaluation of the ruble, the high cost of models and, which requires mandatory, very expensive certification of cars, affected. But there is a secondary market that makes it possible to purchase a convertible for a reasonable price.
What you need to know when buying a used convertible? Firstly, the price of such a car will be 20-60% higher than the cost of a similar model in a conventional body. Convertibles can be called inexpensive to maintain, because they are made on the basis of production cars. However, the roof mechanism, the roof itself, the elements of the rear of the body are individual. And the price of these parts is high. In addition, they are rare, therefore they are available only on order. WITH scheduled maintenance the car, say, needs to be serviced, there are no problems. But if the roof mechanism is broken, this can become a problem. Not every service will undertake to repair the roof, since this requires special equipment, knowledge and skills. And not everyone has them.
Nevertheless, there are many used convertibles on the Russian market. We decided to focus on the most bright cars whose price does not exceed 1,000,000 rubles, and whose age is ten years. Still, this is usually the second, or even the third car in the family, and therefore the runs of such cars are small. So to find a copy of a venerable age and good condition in this case is even easier than when looking for a regular model.
We dig in ads
Before buying a convertible, first of all, you need to decide on two main parameters. First - what should be the roof: soft or hard.
In case of damage, the tarpaulin roof can be repaired in Russia. Such work costs about 60,000 rubles. Prices vary depending on models. You can also order a non-original awning from Europe or the USA. Will cost about the same money.
The second is how many seats will be in your future convertible: 2 or 4. You can immediately forget about the five-seater saloon - the roof folding mechanism eats up too much space. Decided? Then about everything in order.
Let's start with the soft top.
Smart ForTwo Cabrio
For a little less than a million rubles you can buy the most small convertible, presented on the Russian market, -. Even in . The last one is different richly equipped. Rear-wheel drive Smarts are equipped with a liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 82 or 102 hp. Gearbox - robotic. Full of copies with low mileage of 20,000 - 30,000 kilometers.
Volkswagen Beetle Cabrio and Volkswagen Eos
This Beetle appeared in 1998 and was produced until 2010 at factories in Wolfsburg (Germany) and Puebla (Mexico). In total, about a million cars were made. On secondary market in Russia, a convertible can be found with a 150 hp gasoline engine. and automatic. But the runs of used copies are great - from 90,000 kilometers.
Another convertible from Volkswagen - Eos - created on Golf platform and began rolling off the assembly line in 2006. The car differed from competitors in the design of the convertible roof: the five-section top did not fold, but slid into the compartment above the trunk. Thanks to this, it was possible to raise the roof, for example, in the garage.
On the secondary market, these convertibles can be found from about 650,000 rubles. It will be a car of 2007 with a run of 110,000 km. Under the hood is a 200-horsepower 2.0-liter engine, paired with a robot.
Mini Cooper Cabrio or Mini Cooper Roadster
Mini Cooper With convertible most often found with a 1.6-liter engine with 116 forces and a variator. A 2007 car can be found with a mileage of 90,000 km. Cooper's main problems may arise with the CVT. But this applies to all cars, not just convertibles. Repair of the variator will cost a tidy sum.
Fiat 500C
The only convertible we found on one of the sites for the sale of used cars. This is a 2008 Fiat 500 with over 100,000 miles on it. Under the hood of the car is a 1.4-liter engine with 100 hp, paired with a robot. The car also has a loaded version with a folding roof - Abarth, but its price (of course, a used car) exceeds a million. The soft roof is devoid of an electric drive, it is laid out manually. However, in the updated such a decision remains.
BMW Z4 or 1 Series Convertible
Bavarian cars are popular in Russia, which is why the choice of convertibles of this brand is great.
One of the most compact BMW- Series 1 - produced since 2004. And on the used car market for 900,000 - 1,000,000 rubles, you can find convertibles from 2007-2008. Runs - from 70,000 to 100,000 km. Under the hood - 2.0-liter gasoline engines 143 or 170 hp There are also 3.0-liter engines with a capacity of 218 forces. Transmissions - automatic 6-speed.
For about the same money, you can find a Z4 roadster. It will be a car from 2003-2007. Under the hood - either a 2.5-liter engine with 192 horsepower, or a 3.0-liter unit with 231 horsepower. The range of runs is large - from 50,000 to 170,000 km.
Audi TT Roadster or A3 Cabrio
The TT Roadster, for example, manufactured in 2008 with a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 200 hp, fits into the amount of up to a million rubles. And robotic box gears. The mileage of such a car will be from 50,000 to 100,000 km.
A million fits A3 Cabrio 2007-2008 with a range of 60,000 km. Under the hood there will be a 1.8-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 167 hp. The unit works with a robotic gearbox.
But there are also more practical convertibles, with the so-called hard top, or Hard Top. Let's look at them too.
Mercedes-Benz SLK
The most compact can be found on sites selling used cars quite often. Apparently, this is due to the fact that premium is held in high esteem by us. A roadster, for example, made in 2006, fit into the price of up to a million rubles. The car is equipped with an air scarf system. Air ducts are placed in the headrests of the seats, from which warm air is supplied to the necks of the driver and passenger. Under the hood of the car is a 1.8-liter engine with 163 hp. working in tandem with the machine. Mercedes runs are relatively small - from 50,000 km. Tempting offer!
Mazda MX-5 Roadster
Another stylish rear-wheel drive roadster, but from Japanese manufacturer and more popular. This Mazda can be either soft top or hard top. We found with hard. Actually, only with such a roof was officially delivered to Russia. In the secondary market, you can find roadsters of 2011 with a mileage of 27,000 - 50,000 km. Under the hood is a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 160 hp. With. and a 6-speed automatic. The price starts from 900,000 rubles.
Pininfarina designers worked on the appearance of the convertible.
Global models also have roofless versions. A striking example - Ford Focus. The second generation car looks familiar only from the front. The back is completely custom. Here are their rear lights, the trunk lid, under which the hardtop lifting mechanism is hidden. The trunk itself, like all similar cars, is small. On the secondary for a million rubles, you can find models of 2009 with runs of 70,000 - 120,000 km. As a rule, these are convertibles with a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 145 hp. and 5-speed manual.
Once upon a time, the 207 beat sales records in Europe. Now the 208th has come to replace, to which the manufacturer has given individuality in the form of special body colors, rough to the touch. But when the Peugeot 207 hatchback left the market, the CC version, that is, the coupe-cabriolet, continued to be produced. Within a million rubles today you can buy a car with a mileage of 60,000 km. It will be a convertible with a 120-horsepower 1.6-liter engine. Gearboxes - either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic, which had a lot of complaints. However, this is not a feature of the convertible. Many had problems with AL4 machines, so the company preferred the Japanese unit from Aisin.
Peugeot 308 CC from 2010-2012 can be found with quite modest mileage up to 50,000 km. Under the hoods of cars will be 150-horsepower 1.6-liter engines, paired with 4-speed automatics.
Opel Astra TwinTop
The convertible is 227 mm longer than the hatchback. This made it possible to somehow “get along” in the rear of the car with the hardtop folding mechanism and the trunk. The volume of the latter is 205 liters. This is 175 liters less than the hozblok hatchback. Like Ford and Peugeot rear end neither hatch nor sedan repeats here. Because body parts are rare and will need to be ordered. Convertible asters from 70,000 km are sold for 650,000 rubles. Under the hood of such machines, a well-proven aspirated engine with a volume of 1.8 liters and a power of 140 hp works. Gearboxes - 6-speed manual or 4-band automatic.
Volvo C70
The Swedish convertible was not initially available. After all, this is still a representative of the premium segment. In the secondary market for a million rubles, we found only a few copies of 2007 with runs over 110,000 km. Under the hoods of cars is a 220-horsepower 2.5-liter engine. But there is even a diesel (2.0 l) of 136 forces. All cars have 5-speed gearboxes.
Which convertible to buy, soft top or hardtop, everyone decides for himself. A hard top is more practical than a leather one. True, it is heavier, which causes squeaks in the cabin. For a million, you can choose both a premium and a "people's" convertible. Here you need to look at the mileage, condition of the car and the cost of maintenance.
In the modern world, there is an extremely wide variety of cars, which has long crossed out the concept of a car as a means of transportation.
by the most popular cars Convertibles have recently become the BMW 3 Series and the Audi A5.
Why are convertibles so valued?
Today, a car is an indicator of the status of its owner, a visual aid of his preferences and, of course, a demonstration of individuality. If we talk about the last criterion, then it is he who makes some people opt for a convertible, or, more simply, a convertible.Some car enthusiasts buy because of the peculiar romance that is all around. of this type cars, but romance and a sense of freedom should not cloud common sense, because convertibles have a huge number of disadvantages compared to covered cars.
Disadvantages of Convertibles
To begin with, it is worth noting the material side, which is not in favor. If you look at the catalogs in, you can pay attention to the fact that the cost of some convertible cars is up to 30% higher than the price of the cars on the basis of which they were created.When buying a convertible, few people think about possible colds from driving, although it is clear that even at a speed of 50 km / h, any gaps will begin to let the wind through. Of course, in fairness it should be said that many manufacturers have long solved this drawback, but, as a rule, due to additional aerodynamic approaches.
It is even theoretically impossible to defeat a draft, but if you decide to buy a convertible, then get used to closing the glove box and, if necessary, catching objects flying out of the car.
In convertibles, there is the threat of dust baths, combined with sunstroke. Concerning sunstroke, then many drivers, having seen enough of Hollywood films, travel without wearing caps or hats, which at any moment can lead to loss of consciousness. But with regards to dust, which is an integral companion on any road, within the city, each owner of a convertible will additionally enrich his face with soot and exhaust gases. As it is easy to understand, this is not very good for health, as well as for beauty, since the aforementioned cocktail will easily destroy even the most thoughtful makeup.
