We also really liked the stylish ventilation deflectors, similar to those used on other models of the company, but the appearance of these comfortable round pieces in the SL cabin looks the most appropriate and harmonious.

The main interior advantage during a visual test drive of the BMW M6 Coupe is a concise dashboard. The BMW instrumentation is as generic as the overloaded Mercedes-Benz steering column switch, which is why this contraption, convenient in all respects, has not undergone major evolutionary changes. But in all other respects, the orientation towards American taste is felt especially sharply. The exhibition of the achievements of the German economy, located near Munich, brings to mind the lines of one immortal anecdote: "... and with all this we will now try to take off ...".

The takeoff and leisurely ride of the SL65 AMG came out smoother and more comfortable. We already wanted to sing the professionalism of Mercedes engineers, who were able to give the AMG Speedshift robotic automatic clutch with the softness of the characteristics of traditional torque converter automatics, but quickly realized their delusions. It turns out that the AMG Speedshift box is of two types: with the prefix MTC in the name - the one with the clutch and with the prefix 7G-Tronic - with a torque converter. So, the more sporty AMG Speedshift MTC is installed on the less powerful SL63 AMG, and the "sixty-fifth" is content with the AMG Speedshift 7G-Tronic. Apparently, the clutch was unable to digest 1000 Nm of torque and this was taken into account for hydromechanics, and the proud prefix Speed ​​\u200b\u200bshift, one must think, should caress the ear and testify to sports refinement in AMG.

We're not offended by the confusing names, especially since the Mercedes specialists did their best by adding two extra gears versus the previous SL65's five. Now, in terms of the number of gears, the Stuttgart supercar is not inferior to the BMW M6 participating in the test drive, and even slightly surpasses the Bavarian in terms of ease of traction control. Take, for example, starting from a place in the normal mode. "Es-El" operates according to the algorithm standard for cars with an automatic machine: he released the brake pedal in a drive and the Mercedes rolled smoothly. A BMW equipped with a dual-clutch robot stays in place in such a situation, while further addition of gas leads to a sharper jerk forward. Of course, you can get used to and live in traffic jams, the previous M6 / M5 behaved much more obstinately, but after the refined SL, additional gestures in BMW already look like an extra burden.

The dynamics of both coupes in an urban test drive is hidden by comfortable modes in the operation of gearboxes and the sensitivity of the gas pedals. How nice that this was done not only for the ultimate fuel economy, but also for the most convenient control of heavy-duty vehicles in the crowded metropolis. The desire to transfer control electronics to more sporty modes does not arise in principle. For confident overtaking of everything and everything, it is enough to just slightly drown the right pedal, and switching to “Sport” will only lead to a deterioration in comfort and nothing more. Considering that already now many car navigators are able to predict turns and slopes, one can imagine a situation in the future when one or another preset mode will turn on automatically at the command of the electronics, depending on traffic situations. For example, in the city - "Comfort", on the highway - "Sport", and on the race track - "Sport +".

Fortunately for us, the time for artificial automotive intelligence has not yet come, and flipping the toggle switches is always useful, at least to cheer up or, as in the case of Russian road conditions, to reduce the buildup on the waves of the surface. But in this test drive discipline, the Mercedes SL65 AMG turned out to be a little better, but better. Needless to say, the ABC hydraulic spring suspension is, by definition, a more complex and efficient design than the adaptive chassis of the Bavarian Six, where performance adjustment is provided solely by changing the shock absorber settings. As a result, the softer and more comfortable chassis of the Mercedes is able to suppress rolls no worse than the Bavarian M-suspension and is less susceptible to the influence of bumps on the trajectory in corners.

Why, then, the ABC concept was not adopted by other manufacturers? On reflection, we came to the conclusion that the smooth roads of developed capitalism are to blame for everything. Indeed, on an ideal surface, the BMW M6 is not much different in smoothness from the Mercedes SL65, and if so, then there is no need to increase the cost of the design. To some extent, the ABC hydraulic spring suspension can be called an adaptation to the harsh Russian conditions, which is very pleasing and is a pleasant exception to the rule. Indeed, as practice shows, the degree of intelligibility of the population in cars is directly proportional to the level and quality of the road network of a state. In relation to Russia, adaptation in most cases implies an increase in ground clearance, a reduction in sound insulation and a reduction in the cost of the quality of interior plastic for budget models. Premium brands are left unchanged, apparently believing that we have never tried anything sweeter than horseradish ...

The limiting possibilities of accelerating dynamics in a comparative test drive left two impressions. On the one hand, emotionally, “em sixth” is just as good, especially considering the percussive switching of the preselective robot in Sport Plus mode. On the other hand, "es-el" came off the more, the higher the speed became. Not only is the Mercedes more powerful than the BMW by 70 forces, it also has a closer transmission range. We have never experienced such a corrupting superiority over other participants in the movement. Yes, in the Ferrari 458 Italia and Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4, the acceleration level will be at least as good, but Italian supercars, which initially imply a certain degree of sacrifice and deprivation in landing geometry, visibility, and overall comfort level, present stunning dynamics as an excuse for their impracticality. . The SL65 AMG is a normal and comfortable Mercedes in this regard, only with a personal backup rocket booster under the hood.

There is more hi-tech in the song of the Bavarian motor, but this does not save BMW from losing to the Stutrart two-seater in acceleration right off the bat. Even by transferring the transmission to the hardest mode and rewarding yourself with sledgehammer-shaped shifts, thoughts of world superiority will not arise. The carbon-roofed BMW M6 coupe simply has to be the fastest and a little slower than the Ferrari and Lamborghini. To some extent, the ideologies of the participants in this test of cars are similar. Practicality - first of all, plus powerful overclocking if necessary. Only acceleration in the "emka" is a little less, and there is more practicality, thanks to a full-fledged four-seater saloon with a decent trunk.

The fact that the competitors of the test drive, to put it mildly, are not intended for torture in the conditions of a racing track, is not a revelation for us - they don’t go with such weight here. However, the BMW M6 Coupe clearly shows how a perfectly tuned two-ton chassis should drive, while the Mercedes SL65 AMG hides the flaws of how a short-wheelbase “two-ton” with a massive V12 on the front axle can be driven as effectively as possible. The three-beam star all the time tends to fall out of the bend, and the minimum distance between the axles, coupled with incredible traction, leaves no chance for stable reactions when controlling acceleration and braking. But if you do not lead to sin, then outwardly, and in numbers, Mercedes does not look at all clumsy. From the outside, it seems that a professional kart driver turned out to be driving, who moved from a kart to an older formula - everything is correct, only slower, further adaptation is needed.

We must pay tribute to the BMW specialists - they fully confirmed their status as wizards in the settings of the rear-wheel drive chassis. You can grumble for a very long time about the huge curb weight, understeer, average brake efficiency, but the fact remains that the above nitpicks would be fair to full-fledged athletes, but not to Gran Turismo. Where Mercedes on a test drive asks: “Boy, didn’t you make a mistake with the car?”, “Six” famously shoots out of the next turn and offers to add. Neutral habits and the absence of any delays in reactions, even the slowness to fuel supply from low revs, was replaced by track sharpness. After this, accusing the BMW M6 Coupe of glamor will not turn your tongue. We can say: M6 more than atoned for the sins of the seven chassis, designed primarily for comfort. And in general, we invite all critics to remember the story, “em sixth” has never been a full-fledged sports car, neither in the first generation, nor in the second.
