How it all began

PRODUCTION HISTORY

The car was first shown to the public at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1991. The initial line was offered in two bases and four engines, for a total of eight models. The first were the cars "300SE" and "300SEL", versions with a wheelbase extended by 100 mm were designated by the letter "L" and were 10 kg heavier. In all other respects, the cars were identical. Sedans were equipped with a five-speed manual gearbox and six-cylinder engine M104E32 (104.990). The engine, developed in 1989, in the volume of 3.2 liters was first used on the W140.

Next in line were the traditional S-Class V8 models: the 400SE and 400SEL, and the 500SE and 500SEL. The five-liter M119E50 engine (119.970) was launched two years before the W140 body, and its smaller version M119E42 (119.971) with a working volume of 4.2 liters made its debut on it. The standard equipment of the 8-cylinder versions was a four-speed automatic transmission, alloy wheels, 235/60ZR16 tires (instead of 225/60R16 for the 300ths) and a large list of other equipment were included.

But the flagship of the new generation aroused the greatest interest of the public, which for the first time in the post-war history of the brand had a 12-cylinder M120E60 engine (120.980). The "600SE" and "600SEL" models gave the car the unofficial nickname " six hundredth» in Russia (see below). For the Mercedes-Benz company itself, the number “600” was also a reference to the legendary W100 “600” limousine (produced in 1964-1981), a competitor of non-representative cars, but the so-called. of the highest class like the Rolls-Royce Phantom V. At the Geneva Motor Show in March 1992, they introduced a coupe on the S-class platform, which received the C140 index.

Like its predecessor, the C126 coupe, the car did not have B-pillars. 6-cylinder engines were not installed on the coupe, only the 500SEC and 600SEC versions were offered with engines and transmissions similar to the sedan.

In general, the 140 series sedan and coupe were positively received by the public, which was reflected in the sales figures. However, their huge dimensions and cost more than a quarter higher than their predecessor (from 90 thousand DM for "300SE" to 220 thousand DM for "600SEC") caused their share of criticism.

Already in October 1992, two “budget” models appeared at the Paris Motor Show. The first was the "300SE 2.8", having a similar "300SE" engine but reduced to 2.8 liters (M104E28, 104.944), and a similar manual transmission. The second model, "300SD Turbo" had a turbodiesel 3.5-liter six-cylinder OM603D35A (603.971). According to the tradition that has developed since 1978, the S-class diesel models were intended only for export to North America, which explained some of the features of their configuration (for example, automatic transmission as standard equipment, as on more expensive versions).

The first batches of the car, released in October 1991, really went across the Atlantic. But in September '92, Daimler makes the model available in other markets. Basically, it was purchased for official purposes by companies and taxi companies. The introduction of stricter exhaust gas regulations forced Mercedes-Benz to reduce the power of all other engines by limiting injection at high speeds. This had almost no effect on the dynamic characteristics, but it led to an improvement in fuel consumption. The appearance of "budget" S-classes made it possible to improve the standard equipment of more expensive versions and abandon manual transmissions on the 300SE and 300SEL from January 1993; tires 225/60R16, replaced by 235/60R16.


In June 1993, Mercedes-Benz adopts a new model naming system based on letters (one, two or three, some combinations are abbreviations), the so-called. "class", and the numbers, still indicating the engine size. All modifications of the W140 were renamed according to the new system: "300SD Turbo" became "S350 Turbodiesel", "300SE 2.8" → "S280", "300SE" and "300SEL" → "S320", "400SE" and "400SEL" → "S420 ”, “500SE”, “500SEL” and “500SEC” → “S500”, “600SE”, “600SEL” and “600SEC” → “S600”. However, the transformation of "300SE" and "300SEL" into "S320" affected not only the new name. 1994 brought a number of changes. During the first three years of production, despite the high appreciation of buyers, the high price of the car did not allow reaching the level of sales of its predecessor W126, so Mercedes is taking a number of measures to reduce it. In February, the model range of the C140 coupe is supplemented by the “lightweight” model “S 420” (during this period, the C140 coupe had not yet been allocated to the CL class). In March, the sedan is restyled. Externally, the car changes the orange glass of the direction indicators to transparent ones, and gets new lights at the back. In addition, the clearance of the car is reduced, and matte plastic bumpers begin to be painted in body color. Inside, the car gets updated electronics and a new interior. And the flagship sedan S600 can now be distinguished by a slightly modified grille. The update also affects V8 and V12 engines. The M119 engine received a new crankshaft, optimized valve control, lighter pistons, individual ignition coils for each cylinder and an optimized engine control unit. The last two changes also affected the M120. Together with a new, more compact and lighter automatic transmission with an electronic control unit and the introduction of a fifth, overdrive gear with a lock-up mechanism in the torque converter. Fuel consumption decreased by 7%, and the emission of harmful gases by 40% without deterioration in dynamic qualities.

The last changes take place in June 1996. The coupe gets a similar update to the 1994 sedan. At the same time, Mercedes decides to further develop its classification system and separates the C140 into a new CL class (CL - Comfort Leicht or Light Comfortable). Many of the coupe's upgrades also carried over to the sedan, such as the removal of retractable "antennas" in the rear fenders to aid orientation when parking. They were replaced with a parking radar system - Parktronic. A GPS receiver also appeared - a satellite navigation system. At the same time, the S350 Turbodiesel model was replaced by the S300 Turbodiesel with a new three-liter OM606 turbodiesel. The displacement was reduced, but the engine had twice as many valves and turbocharging with intercooling, which, in addition to reducing fuel consumption, improved the dynamic characteristics of the car.

Updates and increased production and sales by the end of the 90s did not help the W140 repeat the success of the W126. Nevertheless, the value of the S-Class W140 for Mercedes is difficult to overestimate. The car-symbol and benchmark of the executive class (F) set a kind of standard and approved the leadership of Mercedes in the segment for years to come. In July 1998, production begins to curtail, and on August 25, the conveyor stops. Small-scale production of the 140s continued until the beginning of 2000, these were special series: armored Sonderschutz and extended Pullman limousines. At the end of 1998, the S-class W140 was replaced by the new Mercedes-Benz W220, and the coupe, allocated in 1996 to the CL-class, was replaced by the Mercedes-Benz C215.

That is why the last 140s that left MB were only in March 2000. And in March 1997, the most unique modification of the V140 S500 appeared, especially for the Vatican, the landau "Papamobile" was built to transport the Pope. If the landau was assembled in a single copy, then the exact number of armored cars and limousines is unknown, since according to the documents they passed as standard “five hundredth” and “six hundredth”.

If Mercedes itself settled on these modifications, then independent tuners also created many interesting models. Just during the release of the W140s, Mercedes-Benz became close to AMG. When Daimler himself retired from motorsport at the end of the 1950s, in 1967, enthusiastic engineers in Affalterbach formed a firm that specialized in converting stock Mercedes-Benz cars into racing cars and entered them in various motorsport leagues, mainly in DTM. But at the same time, she did not limit herself to her motorsport parts and sold them to private customers. By the beginning of the 90s, the business expanded to such an extent that during the mentioned marketing transformations of Mercedes-Benz in the early and mid-90s, in early 1993, an agreement was concluded with AMG, which became the official tuner and finalized the standard models, which then Mercedes itself sold in dealer networks. The introduction of the V12 M120 engine enabled AMG to create a range of modifications for both its CLK-GTR and the Pagani Zonda. Although the engine itself had impressive characteristics, for these Supercars, it was necessary to significantly modify them, creating a number of modifications with a volume of 6.9 7.1 and 7.3 liters. The Mercedes-Benz W140 was in no way suitable for sporting purposes, but in 1997, Hassanal Bolkiah, the Sultan of Brunei, known for his passion for collecting cars, made an unusual order for 15 cars from AMG. The result was a kind of station wagon (based on developed prototypes for ambulances) with a front from the C140 coupe. But, under the hood was a 7.3 V12 engine, identical to the one on the Pagani Zonda. Although Bolkiah later reduced the order to ten cars, AMG converted eight more S600s into S73Ts. And at the same time, it provided an opportunity to privately modify the S600 and CL600 into S73 and CL73, respectively.


Other firms also created a number of modifications for the W140: Brabus lengthened the V140 by half a meter, creating a six-seat limousine; Lumano removed the roof from the C140 to create a full-fledged convertible, while Zagato, on the contrary, turned it into a three-door liftback. Extended limousines were also built by Caro and Binz. And Carat Duchatelet, created "Pullman-Sonderschutz" in her performance.
