Let's start with the power units. The sedan is equipped with two gasoline "fours" 1.6 - atmospheric VTi (116 hp, 150 N m) and supercharged THP (150 hp, 240 N m) - yes HDi turbodiesel (114 hp, 240 N m ) of the same volume. That is, the 120-horsepower engine left the range, taking with it the problematic four-band “automatic”. The presence of two pedals in Citroen now means that the box here is a six-speed Aisin AT6 III, which shifts gears 40% faster than the AT6 II before restyling. The same six steps are now in the C4 with “mechanics”, with the exception of the basic modification, where there are still five of them.

Modified gasoline engines meet Euro-6 standards, although according to the documents they are still certified in Russia for Euro-5. In the "turbo" replaced the pump high pressure and a thermostat whose temperature sensor before, he shamelessly lied and drove to the service, since the engine simply did not start due to an error. As for the diesel engine, it is well known from the related Peugeot 408 model. In France, the C4 hatchback has not shunned diesel fuel for a long time, ours thought, doubted - but now they decided. The "mechanical" heavy-fuel sedan will get a Driver's Choice Award from me, but I'm starting with the "automatic" C4 THP. The engine is started by a button to the left of the steering wheel.

A partner of a dense physique grumbles - the entrance / exit is inconvenient, he needs a wider doorway. Something else worries me. It seems that the steering wheel is adjustable in height and reach, the range of settings for the soft seat is decent. However, with a height of 187 cm, I invariably rest my knee on the sharp edge of the center console (“mechanics” or “automatic” - it doesn’t matter). For a tall front passenger, such a problem will pass if the back row is uninhabited. Moved away to the fullest, and that's it. The front seat cushion is short, the back slightly pushes out, there is no lumbar support, lateral support for show. But there is no crime in ergonomics, you can live.

Before the update, the “automatic” hung in second gear during acceleration and generally worked slowly. The new Aisin is more agile, making the noisy Sport mode completely irrelevant. I pressed the right pedal - overtook, on the left - slowed down as much as I wanted (a slight wadding of the brake drive was preserved). Soundproofing has not lost its former advantages (suspension, tires, wind are barely audible, but mostly quiet), but it has not acquired new ones either - wheel arches are still noisy. The return of the turbo engine is enough for me always and everywhere, besides, 150 “horses” now accelerate the C4 to hundreds faster: 8.1 s is not 9.6 for you. The maximum speed increased from 200 to 207 km/h. Not a bad result for a facelift.

"Tse-fourth" was on the drive test three years ago. Then we delivered a verdict on steering, recognizing feedback modest (everything is the same with her), but the smoothness of the ride has since improved thanks to the new Spanish-made KYB shock absorbers, which have been mounted since November 2014. The suspension did not become impenetrable, but it works out all types of defects more gently. The pre-styling car in the MKAD ruts had to be caught hard, the updated one behaves calmly and does not require every second taxiing.

The sedan provokes, you willy-nilly go fast. It feels like 80 km / h, on the digital speedometer - over a hundred. On good roads Tatarstan, where we are starting to test the car, war has been declared on exceeding the limits: cameras calculate and average speed, there are many traffic police cars on duty. We see that the locals do not drive, we roll carefully, like they do. In neighboring Chuvashia, on the contrary, the attitude to restrictions is indifferent. On an empty country road, we overcome the mark of 170 km / h to make sure that it is comfortable to drive in a Citroen. Climbing off-road is reckless, but the organizers insist - they paved a patch of liquid earth. Ground clearance of 176 mm allows you to keep the front bumper.

We transfer to diesel car on the new six-speed "mechanics" and realize that this is, perhaps, best citroen C4. Mutual understanding (what is there - unity!) With a well-coordinated tandem of a turbo engine and a box, you find it instantly: it is impossible to stall at the start. Lever strokes are short, gears of “medium length” are switched effortlessly, no need to part. The car briskly accelerates both in the "fifth" and in the "sixth". At the same time, fuel consumption in our, almost 90% extra-urban cycle is about 6.5 l / 100 km (three liters less than that of a gasoline “turbo-four”). The fact that I underestimated the diesel on the Peugeot 408, I blame the old "five-step".

I summarize like this. The car unconditionally liked the balance of qualities. A rare occurrence these days. The updated one is much better than its predecessor. It is clear that during the crisis, which will last at least another couple of years, the French sedan will not be a bestseller in Russia. But after the test, only positive emotions remained, so I want the “fourth”, especially the turbodiesel, to be as lucky as me.

But this simplicity, with the Euro-5 environmental standard, which has not been forgotten, eliminates additional costs. Urea for exhaust cleaning? Forget!

The gearbox is short-stroke, with excellent selectivity - the likelihood of misses in steps, even for a beginner, is minimized. But it's not only that. Of all the modifications, this one seemed to me the best in terms of exchange rate stability. Under the heaviest engine, the front suspension was reinforced with stiffer springs and shock absorbers. Take turns on a far from flat, wet road- pure pleasure. Mandatory now for all complete sets of ESP did not work even once.

If the pages of our "book" with a turbodiesel and a six-speed manual transmission left the most positive impressions, then the more familiar ones, dedicated to the already well-known 150-horsepower engine with a new six-speed "automatic" did not cause such an unambiguous perception. Firstly, there is little trust in the turbocharged “direct” Prince: in operation, the engine showed an oily appetite and annoyed it with breakdowns in fuel equipment. They seemed to work with reliability, but "the sediment remained." Secondly, the “petrol” suspension setting, which differs from the “diesel”, especially in combination with 17-inch wheels, was much less liked in the pits. This disadvantage was strongly manifested on the Chuvash peripheral roads that were far from ideal.

Well, but with a powerful gasoline engine offered maximum equipment: rear view camera, multimedia system with a seven-inch Touchdrive screen, supplemented by Carplay and Mirror Link software for visualizing Apple and Android content, push-button engine start and keyless entry in the car - all this is wonderful.

Here a few words should be said about the box. The French call it the “new EAT6”, but in fact it is still the same Aisin Warner TF70SC, released by the Japanese in 2009 specifically for PSA models. This is a "relative" of the famous TF80SC, which stood on several dozen modern models from Alfa Romeo 159 to Volvo S80.

What is the essence of the update? It is not disclosed in all details, only talking about the transition to a less viscous oil, updated software and friction clutches. They only overdid it with the instrument panel: the three “wells” look beautiful, but only the speed readings from the digital understudy of the speedometer can be considered at a glance. To the “automatic” itself (EAT6 of the Japanese company Aisin of the new, third generation), no questions arose: the box quickly “sorts through” the gears, “tugging” the downshifted one in time when overtaking. Its active character is revealed especially brightly in tandem with the THP 150 turbo engine.

Thanks to a 40% reduction (compared to the previous version of the gearbox) shift speed, as well as a maximum torque of 240 Nm developed by the engine, available already at 1400 rpm, the 150-horsepower C4 Sedan easily and naturally follows the pedal. And the moments of switching are felt only by the change in the sound with which the motor works.

And I would be ready to recognize such an engine-box pair as almost ideal if my colleague and I didn’t get a diesel C4 Sedan with an HDi 115 engine and a 6-speed “mechanics” for dessert.

France has long been famous not only for wine and the Louvre collection, but also for heavy-fuel engines. However, in this case The French seem to have outdone themselves! With the same displacement, a 114-horsepower turbodiesel develops 30 Nm more than a 150-horsepower petrol turbo engine, and this is felt both when starting from a standstill and when accelerating from 80 km / h. There is always a reserve under the pedal, and it makes no sense to unscrew the motor into a ringing: it pulls perfectly already at 1000-1500 rpm, and reaches the peak of thrust at 1750 rpm.

Switching stages with a slightly long-stroke, but perfectly adjusted both in terms of effort and in terms of clarity of movement and gear shifting with a lever is a pleasure! I also liked the clutch: the effort on the pedal is a bit big, but it is informative and its travel is small.

The chassis of the updated C4 sedan is another striking advantage. Roads in the Republic of Tatarstan and neighboring Chuvashia are good only in major cities. Highways of local importance are replete with potholes as deep as an asphalt layer, and waves, in some places representing real springboards. At times, you even go like on a washboard.

On such roads, the new C4 Sedan rides very well - there is enough smoothness and energy intensity. Moreover, the installation of optional 17-inch rims has practically no effect on comfort: on “17” wheels, the car only collects various kinds of road “small things” in a little more detail and reacts a little more nervously to technological joints on bridges and overpasses. But in any case, it confidently smooths out pits with sharp edges, and in order to feel how the shock absorbers choose the compression stroke, you either need to miss a pit half a wheel deep, or drive over bumps quite mercilessly. By the way, shock absorbers for PSA concern Peugeot Citroen now produced by the eminent company Kayaba.

The updated C4 Sedan is not afraid of country roads: they gain a clearance of 176 mm under a metal crankcase, an energy-intensive suspension, and on cars with an “automatic” there is also a “winter” gearbox mode. The latter is designed not only for snowy roads, but also for slippery surfaces.

Handling of the updated C4 sedan is good regardless of modification. The car may not spur you on to “play hooligans”, but it does not oppose active driving either. The French sedan is stable on a straight line and tenaciously holds the trajectory in turns. And the steering is well balanced: the only thing you can find fault with is the lack of a clear "zero" position of the steering wheel. However, this does not interfere with the feel of the car: the steering wheel is moderately easy to move, does not require extra effort in the parking lot and is quite informative in turns. In general, Citroen found a very good balance of comfort and handling. Also, the brakes are great. It is not difficult to rein the car at least sharply, at least smoothly: the pedal is quite informative, and the car is stable when slowing down.

What is the bottom line?

By itself, the Citroen C4 Sedan is a car that has been able to, if not completely change the attitude of Russians towards the French car industry, then at least make the notorious “rule of three F” irrelevant. Interfered with, as they say, external factors - not the most developed dealer network, weak advertising activity, and most importantly - soaring prices, which, whatever one may say, were still superimposed on a certain biased attitude of buyers.

Restyling and had to correct Citroen, including the last factor. Don't say that updated price leaves no chance for reflection, however, in the current conditions, the price turned out to be at least adequate: 899,000 rubles for a “base” with ESP “mechanics”, air conditioning and full power accessories. The main question is: will it be possible to put the version with the "automatic", which is the most popular at the moment, into a psychological one million rubles?

In addition, if the French are able, as they promise, to increase the level of localization of the C4 sedan and, accordingly, maintain prices for a long time, competitors in the C + class of the Russian market will have to seriously reckon with such a strong rival. The sedan holds a straight line well. high speed and practically does not respond to rutting. The steering wheel is filled with a viscous, artificial effort, not sparkling with information content (as in the pre-styling version). Pretty in corners soft suspension does not allow "anneal". Well, the golden mean is a 116-horsepower gasoline version with an “automatic”. In terms of suspension, such a car is similar to a diesel modification, and in turns it behaves no worse than the 150-horsepower version. And the tandem of the engine with the gearbox is quite good. When trying to accelerate intensively, however, the motor “howls” quite loudly and strainedly at high speeds, but in most traffic situations it just doesn’t get to that, because the traction armament is more than enough. Compared to the previous 120-horsepower version, equipped with the old 4-band "automatic", the acceleration control of the new car is clearly better. In a word, in all respects, this modification is best option. It is not for nothing that up to 47% of demand is predicted for its share.

So, restyling benefited the Citroen C4 sedan. More modern appearance, new technical equipment, reduced price and advanced equipment (basic and optional) should certainly attract new buyers. And I would also recommend ordering LED headlights when buying - they shine just gorgeous!

At a time when many French cars quietly and in English left the Russian market, the far from the most popular Citroen C4 sedan unexpectedly reminded of itself with restyling.

The 1.6-liter 114-horsepower HDi, familiar from the Peugeot 408, is as simple and unpretentious to operate as modern diesels can be. The fact that he is eight-valve is not known to many. But this simplicity, with the Euro-5 environmental standard, which has not been forgotten, eliminates additional costs. Urea for exhaust cleaning? Forget!

On the move, such a car turned out to be frisky, although noisy and with noticeable vibrations. The tandem with a six-speed manual gearbox, which is offered for this engine, turned out to be very successful. If the pages of our “book” with a turbodiesel and a six-speed manual gearbox left the most positive impressions, then the more familiar ones, dedicated to the already well-known 150-horsepower engine with a new six-speed “automatic”, did not cause such an unambiguous perception. Firstly, there is little trust in the turbocharged “direct” Prince: in operation, the engine showed an oily appetite and annoyed it with breakdowns in fuel equipment. They seemed to work with reliability, but "the sediment remained." Secondly, the “petrol” suspension setting, which differs from the “diesel”, especially in combination with 17-inch wheels, was much less liked in the pits. This disadvantage was strongly manifested on the Chuvash peripheral roads that were far from ideal.

Well, on the other hand, with a powerful gasoline engine, the maximum equipment is offered: a rear-view camera, a multimedia system with a seven-inch Touchdrive screen, supplemented by Carplay and Mirror Link software for visualizing Apple and Android content, push-button engine start and keyless access to the car - all this is amazing.

Yes, and the dynamics of such a car is not bad, the engine does not roar even beyond 3,000 rpm, the gears switch smoothly and quickly both up and down. But from a turbocharged engine, besides such power, you expect more, if not in numbers, but in sensations.

Here a few words should be said about the box. The French call it the “new EAT6”, but in fact it is still the same Aisin Warner TF70SC, released by the Japanese in 2009 specifically for PSA models. This is a "relative" of the famous TF80SC, which was on several dozen modern models from Alfa Romeo 159 to Volvo S80.

What is the essence of the update? It is not disclosed in all details, only talking about the transition to a less viscous oil, updated software and friction clutches. As a result, we get reduced consumption and better dynamics. Improvements, in principle, are quite in the spirit of the times - friction losses are reduced and the torque converter lockup is tightened. Well, in action I liked the result, the main thing is not to forget to change the oil more often, preferably at every second MOT.

What impressions will a 116-horsepower aspirated engine make with the same updated six-speed? It's no secret that base motors, besides with the "automatic", for the most part weak and dull, like the current weather with endless, drizzling rain. Surprisingly, I was wrong. The well-deserved aspirated TU5, which was not put into consumption by someone's strong-willed decision, is extremely obedient, since the control unit has been finalized. It was not presented in combination with the old five-speed manual gearbox, but for automatic transmission motor performance was sufficient. Moreover, it is hardly much worse than the top-end Turbo Prince, and certainly significantly more reliable.



Naturally, there is no talk of any “sport”, but the thrust is even, in almost the entire rev range, and even on the verge of a cutoff, the engine tries to gain a few extra kilometers per hour. He copes with the basic discipline of “overclocking” like a solid good rider. At least better than similar motors from many well-known manufacturers. Going to overtake at 80 km / h is also not scary. But it’s better not to bring the engine to extreme, it’s not for that. But in normal modes, this version of the C4 sedan is the most comfortable.

The base suspension, combined with 16-inch tires, proved to be the most balanced, if not “impenetrable”, and at the same time not “oak”. And on all types of coverage. From licked asphalt to a muddy country road with a rut that few competitors in the C-class will put their hands on. Of course, a sedan is not an SUV, but the mentioned ground clearance of 176 mm is not superfluous in Russia, and the innovation in the form of a steel crankcase can only be applauded.

All of the above is perhaps the necessary minimum that you should know and consider when buying this car.
