In the general mass of such proposals, the KIA concern stands out with the Rio X-Line model, but not so long ago, the Korean concern decided to bring to the market another compact with the same abbreviation - Picanto. What makes it special and how competitive is it?

The premiere of the new one took place as part of the exhibition in Frankfurt in 2017. This modification of the Korean small car, according to official representatives of the brand, is designed to make the model's position in the European market even stronger.

Although it must be admitted that the usual Picanto is quite popular among the inhabitants of the Old World and occupies the first lines of sales in the monthly ratings. But KIA strives in every way to please the consumer and creates the conditions for its cars to please a wide variety of audiences.

If we talk about the modification of the X-Line, then along with the GT Line variation, first of all, it should attract the attention of a young public who prefer an active lifestyle.

KIA Picanto X-Line was purchased with a 1.0 liter turbo engine. I needed a car with which I can feel comfortable not only in the city, but also outside it - I like to get out into nature. And the Korean compact is quite suitable for this role.

Currently, the mileage is estimated at 14 thousand kilometers. It is already possible to draw the first conclusions about ownership.

Strengths:

Weak sides:

  • Complete lack of soundproofing (in my opinion).
  • Uncomfortable front seat.

Of course, Picanto X Line can hardly be considered a full-fledged crossover. The maximum that I allowed myself on it was to drive along a country road. But, in general, I was satisfied with such an omnidirectional model. In all other respects, the compact is also pleasing so far, which inspires optimism.

Appearance

KIA Picanto X-Line 2018 is perhaps the most spectacular Picanto of all on the market. “Off-road” paraphernalia made the compact body very aggressive, and even the GT Line version looks somehow inexpressive against the background of the novelty.

The “evil” look was achieved due to pseudo-metallic silver linings on massive bumpers, a body kit made of black plastic, a cellular radiator grille with yellow inserts, moldings, an interesting rear diffuser, and wheel arch extensions. The spoiler on the tailgate makes the profile of the car swift, while the increased ground clearance does not interfere with this at all.

Interior decoration

The interior of the Picanto X Line differs slightly from the standard modifications, and the most noticeable thing that can be observed here is the yellow stitching on the controls, yellow patterns on the door armrests-stampings.

However, this does not disappoint, because the interior of the Korean compact is initially very pleasant in all respects: the quality of finishing materials and assembly are acceptable, and the front panel is decorated in a trendy minimalist style.

The strict instrument panel is read perfectly - its digitization is clear and large, and the white backlight provides high contrast. The on-board computer display is small, but very informative and easy to use.

There is no center console as such - the air conditioning control unit is shifted down, closer to the transmission lever, and multimedia is concentrated above the central blower deflectors.

It should be noted that the multimedia entertainment complex has a color touch screen. It displays a navigation map, audio system data, although the projected picture is far from ideal - high-resolution graphics do not shine with detail.

A plump, high-slung driver's seat may not appeal to tall drivers. Otherwise, it is quite good and provides optimal fixation of the body when maneuvering. The rear sofa is expectedly cramped, even for two riders with a height of up to 175 centimeters. But the luggage compartment of 270 liters is quite roomy due to its regular shape (a rectangle without significant protrusions and bulges), and if you fold the rear row of seats, you can achieve a flat floor and a volume of 1010 liters.

Driving properties

The naturally aspirated 1.2-liter power unit is quite suitable for city driving - it demonstrates good acceleration in the medium speed zone and responsiveness when pressing the accelerator. However, driving a car with such an engine is problematic on the highway, because the dynamics after 80 kilometers per hour deteriorate noticeably.

The 1.0-liter turbo engine looks much more versatile, which famously starts from a standstill and is able to quickly complete overtaking. Its fuse is enough for speeds up to 160 kilometers per hour, while the fervent roar constantly provokes to drown the gas pedal to the floor.

However, it is still not worth flirting with high speeds. The reason for this is the weak stability of the car, which manifests itself in the form of yaws.

Moreover, it is problematic to “catch” a fast-moving Picanto on the road because of the uninformative, light steering, and the high center of gravity imposes restrictions when cornering - tangible rolls. But in the normal driving mode, the Korean compact only pleases - it reacts vividly to steering turns and allows you to briskly maneuver in a busy traffic flow.

Suspension with high energy intensity turned out to be short-stroke. Therefore, on bumps, there can be no talk of any smoothness. The car projects in detail every small bump on riders, and when it hits a pothole, its entire body shudders with unpleasant vibrations and shocks. All this makes you be more selective in choosing a route.

Verdict: KIA Picanto X-Line 2019 cannot be attributed to the "SUV" even conditionally. The increased ground clearance does not make a “rogue” out of the Korean compact, but simply allows you to more confidently climb high curbs and overcome tram tracks. Nevertheless, the formed image of a "utilitarian" will attract even more potential buyers to the model and expand its influence in the A segment.

The chairs are noticeably more comfortable. We must pay tribute to the designers of the manufacturer. Landing of the front seats has become lower. Thanks to this, the ergonomics of the cabin have been improved and a high level of passenger comfort has been ensured. On the chairs there is lateral support, which fixes the position of the body during sharp turns. Seats are supplemented with a heating system. Adjustments can only be mechanical. There is no seat ventilation even in the top version, perhaps this is still a minus.

The second row of seats can accommodate three, but only two passengers will be comfortable. This is due to the compact dimensions of the Kia Picanto X-Line 2019. Here you can’t see not only ventilation, but also heating. This circumstance is due to the rather budgetary cost of the hatchback.

The luggage compartment of the Kia Picanto X-Line 2019 cannot boast of a large capacity with the standard position of the second row seats. The volume is 255 liters. However, a larger volume cannot be demanded from such a compact car. By folding the second row, you can achieve an increase in volume immediately up to 1010 liters. We have recently tested a small city car Kia Picanto, but now we decided to try what this car is like in the recently appeared version of the X-Line.

Externally, the Picanto X-Line differs from the regular Picanto. Here we have front and rear bumpers with the so-called off-road design, similar wheel arches, "off-road accent" on the side moldings and grille, double chrome muffler, tinted glass rear doors and tailgate. Internal differences are the presence of aluminum pedals and seats with artificial leather trim with a touch of "lime". As a result, the car in this design looks quite aggressive and even a little off-road, despite the modest ground clearance. I emphasize that this is only an appearance - it is not worth storming the dirt.

At the same time, the car has the largest wheels possible for the Picanto model - cast 15-inch wheels, a full package of winter options (heated front seats, steering wheel and windshield washer nozzles), but for some reason there are obvious flaws in the level of equipment (compared to the top version GT-Line) - there is no electric folding side mirrors and LED turn signal repeaters in them. Also, there is no keyless entry and engine start system available in other trim levels with a button and a Supervision dashboard with an LCD display. There is no navigation either.

The front seats are moderately comfortable, even with a hint of lateral support, although you don’t really want to ride in them for particularly long distances. The solution with a leather interior is traditionally unsuccessful in inexpensive cars (leatherette does not look so hot, plus it’s cold in winter and hot in summer - and there is no seat ventilation, of course, and heating is only for the front row seats). Between the front row seats there is a miniature armrest, and under it there is a no less miniature compartment-box. From the power supply - one USB-input and one 12V socket. No frills.

The orientation of the car to the female half of humanity is intended to be emphasized by the solution for make-up mirrors in sun visors - both the driver and the passenger have them, but the driver has a mirror with a cap and abundant illumination (already from three sides), and the passenger has a mirror without a cap and without illumination.

Rear passengers have nothing but "fear handles" - no outlets, no blowers, no armrests. And yes, it shakes them during the journey along an imperfect road significantly more than those in the front row.

The forward visibility of the car is generally excellent, but back - no, because the side mirrors, due to the strange shape, are too small for full use for their intended purpose and often they do not see what you want to see in the next row - the blind zone is quite large.

Dimensions. The length of the car is only 3,595 mm. Width - 1 595 mm. Height - 1 495 mm. Wheelbase - 2,400 mm. Ground clearance - 161 mm. The turning circle is 9.4 meters.

Maximum speed - 161 km / h. Maximum power of 84 hp the motor develops at 6,000 rpm. It shows the highest torque of 121.6 Nm at 4,000 rpm.

Gasoline - 95th. Tank - 35 liters. The fuel consumption declared by the company is 7 liters per hundred kilometers in the city, 5.4 liters in mixed mode and 4.5 liters on the highway. The real consumption is more - in the city in traffic jams with active pedaling - 9.6-9.7 liters, in the city with a quiet ride - about 9, in mixed mode - 8, on the highway, if you drive calmly and do not exceed 100-110 km / h - about 7 and even a little less.

Curb weight - 980 kg. Load capacity - 390 kg.

The trunk is 255 liters, when the rear seat backs are folded down, it increases to 1,010 liters. A flat floor, alas, is not formed, but a dokatka is placed under the raised floor. There are no outlets in the trunk.

Acceleration time to a hundred in a car with this engine is 13.7 seconds. The stated time matches the actual time. It seems to be a lot, but in practice it seems that it happens faster. Especially when this same hundred is not needed, for example, eighty is enough.

The car drives very well. The number of turns of the steering wheel from edge to edge is 2.8. Despite the fact that the steering wheel is light and without clear feedback, the system settings allow you to actively maneuver both on the track and in the stream. The suspension is set up quite well within its capabilities, the car can overcome small and medium bumps gently if it is done at the appropriate speed - it is recommended to slow down before the traffic policemen, otherwise the suspension breaks through at once - the moves are very small. Ravon R2 in this regard was more forgiving and more forgiving. But it still doesn't feel uncomfortable. The engine would still have a moment more - and in general it would be ideal.

Noise isolation is not the strong point of this city kid. But it is worth recalling that none of the cars in this category can boast of good sound insulation, even significantly more expensive. Well, here - in the cabin at speeds from 50-60 km / h it’s really very noisy (extraneous sounds fly from the arches and from the engine compartment), it’s hard to talk and the music always wants to be louder.

The city minicar Kia Picanto is now offered to the Russian buyer in a fairly large variety of designs. There are two engines to choose from - 1 liter, 67 hp. and 1.2 liters, 84 hp The first version - only with a manual transmission, the second - on the contrary, only with an automatic transmission. For the liter version, two configurations are offered - poorer for 560,000 rubles and richer for 645,000 rubles. For the version with a 1.2 engine, there are as many as seven different trim levels to choose from, priced from 660,000 to 865,000 rubles. One of them is the X-Line we tested. For 810,000 rubles.

Front riders comfortable and functional chairs with good lateral support, a wide number of adjustments and heating are offered. Between them is a small armrest, a parking brake “poker”, a gear selector and a pair of cup holders.


Rear row of seats in theory, it has a triple layout, but with maximum convenience only two adult riders can sit here.

Unfortunately, the second row of seats does not offer any additional amenities. However, given the class of car, it would be foolish to consider this a disadvantage.


Trunk volume with a five-seat interior layout, it is only 255 liters, and with the backs of the rear sofa lowered, it can be increased to 1010 liters. In the trunk underground there was a place for a dokatka and a small set of tools.
In general, the interior of the Kia Picanto X-Line offers a sufficient amount of free space by the standards of the class, excellent ergonomics and a wide range of equipment, both basic and optional, which can not always be found even in cars of a higher class.
