Fourth generation Toyota Supra. Why Toyota Supra became a legend Toyota supra year of manufacture

18.07.2019

many readers liked it, so I decided to do something similar, only about another, no less legendary car.

Any person who owns or has ever owned Toyota Supra will tell you what it is unique car that will change your view of life forever. It has a lot of pluses, but it was not possible to do without minuses.

Special reputation and undue attention

When you buy a Supra, you're buying more than just a car, you're buying a new reputation and lifestyle. Wherever you go, all eyes will always be on you. This attention is both good and bad at the same time. Of course, we all love to show off our cool car, make people wring their necks looking at her, but there is also unwanted attention. In some places, you should not leave your car, as vandals can damage it. Not to mention the police who will stop you every 100 meters, checking if you are doing something illegal.

Too slow!

Many people, looking at such cars, no doubt believe that they are able to drive with incredible speed. While driving a Supra, many people believe that they have entered the Fast and the Furious universe, but this is not entirely true. Without an expensive turbo and good tuning, any stock Toyota Camry will do.

Too expensive!

The car itself may not be particularly expensive, but its contents will burn a hole in your wallet. Registration, insurance, not to mention spare parts and fuel - all this costs a lot of money. Do not forget that most people buy Supra for tuning, which is also not at all free. And here it’s like with a drug - if you try it once, you will never stop, because the market is simply teeming with details for the supra!

Owners

You will find a lot of good guys among Supra owners, but just as many proud owners of the JDM legend are complete nerds. They believe that their car is the fastest in the world, so they will pester you with offers to race, or give you a lot of "useful" advice.

Tuning war

As I said, there are simply countless supra parts on the market, so if you have the right budget, then you can make any dream of modifying your Japanese beauty come true. However, no matter how cool you tune your Supra, there will always be an upstart who invested more and got a better result. This is a vicious circle, if you plan to buy a Supra, then get ready for this.

Toyota Supra is too overpriced

When in public, say "Supra!" and most people will imagine the car from the Fast and the Furious. If your model is different from the mkIV Supra, then no one will even recognize it. Remember that there are mk1, mk2 and mk3, which were just great cars! Sellers often claim that the Supra is best car on the ground, but in fact modern market There are many better cars out there.

Only the Toyota Supra Mk4 was able to compete with the world-famous Porsche 911. The thing is that the Japanese-made car had a similar characteristic, but it cost half as much. The entire range of Toyota.

Car history

Such a modest-looking car has become an icon for connoisseurs of motor sports and just fans of fast cars. The appearance of the Supra was taken over from the Toyota Celica, but the body became longer and wider. Since 1986, the Supra has been separated from the Celica and has become an independent model.

Because of this, Toyota stopped using the Celica prefix, and the car was simply called the Supra. Since the vehicles are very similar, they are often confused. If the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Supra family were assembled at the Takhar enterprise, then the last option is at the Toyota city enterprise. The Supra has a connection with the Toyota 2000GT, from which the engine migrated.

Toyota 2000 GT

The machines of the first 3 families were equipped with M-series power units from Toyota Crown and 2000 GT. All generations had in-line 6-cylinder engines. The chassis had its own name under the code "A". Together with the name, Toyota developed their own logo for the Supra. Auto often became the hero of filming - the most popular "role" in the movie "Fast and the Furious."

However, the coupe was liked and popular even before the movie. He is well known all over the world and, of course, in America. Despite the fact that in European countries not many people drive right-hand drive cars, the Supra has won fans there too.

They produced a model in the back of a coupe and targa. Supra in translation means "above", "above". Toyota Supra manufacturer - Japan. This article will describe the Toyota Supra price and characteristics of the car.

1st generation (1978-1981)

For the first time, the plate with the word Supra could be seen on the most powerful samples of the Toyota Celica. But already in 1978, the company decided to make a strong GT class car so that it could compete with its fellow countryman, the Datsun Z, which dominated the British markets. The new Celica Supra coupe received much more efficient 6-cylinder engines instead of the standard four used on the Celica. The Toyota Celica Supra Mk 1 coupe was produced from 1979 to 1981.

The debut Supra family was essentially based on the Toyota Celica Liftback, but the hero of our review was a little longer. The doors and aft area are similar to the Rear, but the bow stands out. It is important that power unit The rear sight, which had 4 cylinders, was replaced with a 6-cylinder power plant.

Initially, the Japanese company planned to assemble the model as a rival to the famous Datsun 240Z. Therefore, the 1979 Toyota Supra Mk I (the car entered the Japanese market in 1978) initially had a six-cylinder 2.6-liter 4M-E engine that developed 110 horsepower. It was a 12-valve SOHC with an in-line arrangement of cylinders.

It is noteworthy that it was the 2.6-liter 4M-E engine that became the first injection engine produced by Toyota. When 1981 came, the coupe got a 2.8-liter 5M-E engine, which already developed 116 horsepower and 197 Nm of torque. For the Japanese market, there was also a car with a 2.0-liter EC engine, and it was also possible to install an M-TEU turbo engine.

Datsun 240Z

All subsequent 1st generation Supra variants were fitted with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. All boxes had overdrive. Toyota Supra T series managed to keep the principle from Celica rear axle in cars MA45 and large F line in cars MA46 and MA47.

The coupe also had standard four disc brakes, rear suspension with coil springs and stabilizer roll stability. The front suspension was McPherson and stabilizer. Toyota Supra Mk I inside had power windows and central locking. The steering wheel is adjustable. On the "board" of instruments, information from the stereo speakers was displayed.

It also had an analog clock and a speed sensor for the power unit. By the middle of 1979, changes to the car for the United States market were largely cosmetic. The interior has a modified center console and a digital quartz clock.

The appearance was changed by external mirrors, and light alloy rollers were already in quality standard option. Moreover, it was possible to order special mud flaps, which were painted to match the body color. Rear end the coupe was named Celica. Celica XX. That was the name of the debut family of Toyota Celica Supra cars in the Japanese market. It was sold for only three years, then updated in 1981 with the support of Lotus Cars.

The XX version was only sold to Japanese consumers. The 2000GT coupe was considered the flagship of the XX list. With the help of a smaller 2-liter six-cylinder 24-valve DOHC 1G-EU engine, Yamaha, taking the 1G-EU as a base, was able to improve it, which increased power and a similar engine was installed on the Toyota Soarer since 1985.

The return was equal to 160 "horses" at 6,400 rpm. The 2800GT version was considered the most powerful on the list, as it had a 2.8-liter 6-cylinder DOHC 5V-GEU engine that made it possible to “bring out” 175 horsepower at 5,600 rpm. When 1981 came, XX for the first time became the owner of a computer navigation system.

2nd generation (1982-1986)

Three years later, the Celica Supra Mk2 came out, which was distinguished by an extended wheelbase and an elongated hood, under which there was an updated 6-cylinder in-line engine of various sizes. In the UK, targa and coupe cars were introduced, based on a 2.8-liter engine that produces 178 horsepower, which is synchronized with a manual 5-speed gearbox or a 4-speed "automatic" gearbox. Suspension independent type.

Although the Celica name was still in use, the second generation focused more on the Supra than on the Celica. In practice, it was, Supra was a more significant option. Toyota Supra Mk II came with a variety of engines for different countries. Sweden, Switzerland and Australia bought a car with the preserved MK 1 5M-E engine, but Japan MK2 (MA 63) had a SOHC M-TE turbocharged engine or a 2-liter 1G-GTE (GA61).

Among other things, it was in Japan that 1985 marked the end of the MK 2, but problems with the production of the MK 3 at the end of 1985 forced the release of the MK 2s, which was supposed to be sold at the beginning of the next year. Among them were 1985 cars with minor cosmetic upgrades.

Due to taxes, they decided to use smaller power units, so the two-liter version appeared specifically for this. By 1985, the novelty received the title imported car of the year at Motor Trend in the US. In addition, magazines such as "Car" and "Driver" ranked the car in the top ten in 1983 and 1984.

For the United States market, the 2.8-liter SOHC 5M-E engine was replaced with a 2.8-liter DOHC 5M-GE. MK2 was offered in 2 versions: P-type and L-type. They were distinguished by accessibility, body design, as well as wheel and tire sizes. All options came with a 5-speed manual gearbox W58 or a 4-speed "automatic" A43DL / A43DE.

Engine Celica Supra Mk2

Adding to the excellent powertrain was a special development appearance coupe in the company. Although they were technically similar, they differed in trim levels, tire sizes, wheels and body kits. The P-type had fiberglass arches over the rollers, but the L-type did not. The P-type in the "base" had adjustable sports-type seats.

From 1983 to this vehicle began to install a leather interior. Versions of the L-type had an installed digital "tidy" with an on-board computer. IN digital panel included an engine speed sensor, a digital speedometer, as well as a volume sensor fuel tank and coolant electronic type. The onboard computer was able to calculate and display various information - gas economy in miles per gallon, approximate time of arrival and how many kilometers to the destination.

Except for the cars released in 1982, all P-types received headlight washers as a separate option, but the L-type did not receive such an opportunity. The P-type also had a self-locking differential. From history it can be seen that Japanese company at the end of 1981, she decided to fully update the Celica Supra and that's all model family Celica 1982.

Based on the Celica platform, there were some key differences - the appearance of the "front end" and hidden headlights. If we talk about the inside of the MK2, it had power windows, door locks, electric drive mirrors and a steering wheel that could be customized. The central locking button was located on the center console near the power mirror adjustment buttons.

North American models received an analog speedometer dial that was limited to 85 mph (140 km/h). Interestingly, the cruise control option is already available in the basic version of the 2nd family. The list of features includes the presence of automatic climate control, sunroof, 2-color body painting, 5 speakers in the cabin, cassette radio.

The radio antenna was integrated into the front glass instead of the external antenna. Fuel filler hatch, sunroof, and rear bumper painted black, despite the body paint color. L-type cars could have a leather interior as a separate option, while P-type cars could only have a fabric interior.

In 1984 year Toyota The Supra Mk II has undergone a slight facelift. Looking at the Toyota Supra photo, it is noticeable that the car has improved. The front-mounted direction indicators were now streamlined. The rear-mounted lid and bumper were redesigned and painted the same paint color as the body.

Changed and door handles. The steering wheel, cruise control and door lock switch decided to change a little. On dashboard the speedometer scale was increased to 130 mph (210 km/h).

3rd generation (1986-1992)

Following came the updated Supra Mk3 - which differed in that the Celica had front-wheel drive, and the Supra Mk3 had rear-wheel drive. They also featured forged aluminum double wishbones and updated motors. These were a 3.0-liter 270-horsepower naturally aspirated unit and a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine producing 276 horses.

It was the middle of 1986, and the Japanese company Toyota was ready to create the next generation of Supra. Due to the fact that the obligations between Supra and Celica were removed, now they were 2 fundamentally different cars. Celica rebuilt technical part of his car, making it front-wheel drive, but Supra saved the rear drive wheels.

Supra Mk3

The power plant has become more powerful and received a volume of 3.0 liters. In 1988, the Turbo-A version was introduced, which was a special project aimed at winning first place in Group-A in the world car championships. In total, only 500 copies of this brand were produced. Under the hood, she had a special power unit 7M-GTEU, issuing 263 horsepower.

This allowed the coupe to be the fastest Japanese road model until it was introduced. The third generation Toyota Supra Mk III featured many new technologies. By 1986, the car received ABS and TEMS. It's 1989 and the MK3 has changed its look and become more elegant and sportier. By 1990 airbags were being installed as standard equipment. In total, Toyota Supra Mk III (A7) produced 241,471 cars.

4th generation (1993-2002)

By the beginning of 1993, the Japanese leadership of Toyota was able to please car lovers with the next 4th generation of their own. sports coupe rear wheel drive. The car received the internal factory index "A80", and the company has been designing since February 1989. If you put the 3rd and 4th generation side by side, it is clearly seen that the sports car has undergone fundamental changes that have affected not only the appearance, but also the design component.

Auto became famous for its compact size and was not as heavy as previous generations. The car gained its fame with the help of a 1-liter bi-turbo engine, which squeezed out 326 horsepower from the factory. However, this was not the limit.

Some engineers managed to squeeze out of it up to 2041 liters. With. Sadly, the company had no choice but to stop the production of Supra in 2002, because environmental standards were only getting tougher.

Appearance Supra MK IV

After restyling Toyota Supra Mk4 got a brand new body. The appearance of the car now looked more sporty and elegant due to the use of more rounded plastic shapes of body panels. Moreover, this innovation had only a positive impact on the aerodynamic performance of the car.

Toyota decided to abandon the use of expressive and distinguishing the car from others, "signature retractable headlights" that were used in past generations. They were replaced by oval combined headlights with separate linded optics.

The restyled Toyota Supra Mk4 brand used a three-section front bumper with a “skirt”, the doors got a more oval shape, and air intakes were installed in them near rear arches wheels. In addition, there was a spoiler and an auxiliary brake light on the luggage compartment.

The optics itself has acquired rounded shapes. In addition to this, Japanese engineers tried their best to reduce the weight of the car. For this intention, lightweight and practical aluminum was used as an essential raw material for the production of some body elements. For example, he found his place in the hood, suspension and other details.

In 1996, the coupe was improved and received a retouched appearance and some technical changes. In this form, the model was produced from the assembly line until 2002, without receiving a direct successor. Even today, the exterior of the Toyota Supra 4 family looks stylish.

The model knows how to attract glances with her swift appearance, where there are smooth outlines and verified aerodynamic performance. However, despite the expressive front and rear bumpers and a massive rear wing on the trunk lid, the appearance of the sports car does not even hint at aggressiveness.

This was achieved with the help of "friendly" lighting, as well as smoother and softer edges. The fourth generation received a ground clearance of 130 millimeters. Supra MK IV stood out significantly from previous families of the brand. The design staff successfully worked on the body shape.

The turbocharged model of the car from the factory has a massive rear spoiler. The car received an almost perfect weight distribution along the axes. Depending on the configuration, the front axle takes 51-53 percent of the total weight of the car, and the rear axle - 47-49 percent.

Salon Supra MK IV

Taking into account Toyota interior Mk4, then the designers tried to bring the atmosphere of the car as close as possible to the temperament of a natural racing sports car. Its design included the front seats of the sports version with the inherent lateral, lumbar support and lowered landing. There was also a unique center console, which shimmered smoothly along with a large instrument panel, the center of which was occupied by an engine speed sensor.

The IV generation Supra gained its fame among motorists, and not only, thanks to the shooting of the Hollywood film Fast and the Furious in 2001, where one of the main characters Brian O Connor (Paul Walker, who died in a car accident on November 30, 2013) drove it. Slap Jack (Michael Ealy) drove a Toyota Supra Mk4 in the continuation of the film, in its second part "Fast and the Furious".

Then in 2013, Fast & Furious 5 came out and Toyota was driven by Tej Parker (Chris Bridges) - where the car was used for testing in order to slip through surveillance cameras. When the latest part of Fast and Furious 7 was released to the world (in 2015), many saw this sports car again at the end of the film, driven by Brian (Paul Walker). Moreover, for 8 years the car has received many different awards in the "Touring Championships".

Everything inside eloquently testifies to the sporty nature of the car. The driver is in an unusual cockpit, where there is an arc-shaped front panel with built-in 3 round instrument clusters, as well as audio system settings, "microclimate" and other things. The cabin of the fourth generation Supra stands out not only unusual view, but also materials good quality, as well as a nice build.

Although the car is considered a 4-seater, it will be extremely uncomfortable for those sitting in the back. The front seats turned out to be “tenacious”, there is a clearly distinguished profile and enough space, but the rear seats are deprived of an abundance of freedom in the legs and overhead. Although it is difficult to call a car a champion in low ground clearance, the chairs were set so low that it feels like you are sitting right on the asphalt.

The handle for opening the doors is very conveniently located - at knee level. Why Other Car Companies Haven't Thought Out this moment? The luggage compartment of the Toyota Supra MK4 did not receive an increase in volume, and it is unlikely that anyone here will be surprised, because the car was created for completely different purposes. Trunk volume was only 185 liters of usable space.

Despite the small volume, the designers have made it easy to access the trunk with a massive rear door. The 2017 Toyota Supra, which was shown as a concept, should be coming soon. Toyota Supra 2017 will have a completely changed exterior, which is not surprising, because 15 years have passed since the end of production. In 2002, the company's management decided to close the production of the popular coupe toyota Supra MK IV due to low demand and tightening environmental requirements.

Specifications Supra MK IV

power unit

Supra 4 generations has only gasoline power plants. These are six-cylinder 3.0-liter units. Under the hood there is also a 24-valve DOHC type gas distribution mechanism with a distributed supply of gasoline.

The most “pumped” version of the sports coupe can accelerate to 250 kilometers per hour (there is an electronic speed limiter), and acceleration from zero to 100 km / h takes only 5.1 seconds.

In European countries, you could buy more powerful model Supra with a motor that developed 320 "horses". This was achieved with the introduction of 2 turbines. They function in a sequential manner: during a “measured” movement, only one turbine is connected, however, if you sharply press the accelerator pedal, the 2nd turbine instantly turns on, bringing the power unit to peak power.

Despite the fact that there was a 450-horsepower version of the base 2JZ-GTE engine from Toyota Team SARD, the specialists decided to replace the engine in order to reduce the weight of the car. The cast-iron 6-cylinder block was clearly superfluous. Therefore, later introduced a 3.2-liter new motor where the crankshaft, pistons and connecting rods were replaced.

The engine has already developed 918 horsepower along with 1,100 Nm of torque. Production was handled by JUN Auto-Mechanics and Blitz Tuning. With such a “monster”, a two-door sports coupe could reach speeds of more than 300 kilometers per hour.

Japanese tuner Top Secret has fitted the Supra with a V-12 engine from Toyota's flagship Century. The power plant was boosted to 1,000 horsepower, and maximum speed was 358 km / h.

Transmission

The 225-horsepower engine was synchronized with a 5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic. The 280-horsepower engine was paired with a 6-speed "mechanics".

Suspension

The 4 family of the Japanese sports coupe uses a rear-wheel drive platform, where there is a load-bearing body structure, some of the attachments of which are aluminum. Hodovka is fully independent. Both front and rear used a multi-link design with coaxial shock absorbers, transverse stabilizers and coil springs.

Steering

The car was equipped with a rack and pinion steering mechanism, as well as a power steering.

Brake system

Disc wheels allow you to feel confident on the road brake mechanisms installed on all wheels. In addition, they are all ventilated. The brakes are really very good. The stoppage record could only be broken by the Porsche Carrera GT in 2004, 7 years later! The installation of electronic "assistants" is envisaged.

Prices and equipment

It is possible to buy a Toyota Supra Mk4 from 400,000 rubles. When there is a desire to purchase a tuned Mk4, you will have to pay a very large amount, which can vary from 1,500,000 to 2,000,000 rubles. Supra is highly valued by Russian motorists, so finding a car on the used market is not so difficult.

The price will depend not only on the year of production, but also on the condition, level of tuning, good interior. The equipment has ABS, traction control, air conditioning, automatic front spoiler, power windows. More expensive equipment got leather seats with electric drive.

Summing up

To many who know this car, it will be remembered as a powerful and fast supercar that is able to show an excellent, dynamic and comfortable ride at a high level. Its streamlining and light weight allowed to reduce drag and unnecessary fuel costs. It's safe to say that Toyota engineers did a great job.

At one time, the car could seriously compete with some European titled automotive companies. Most motorists are attracted by this two-door model due to the fact that it is ideal for tuning. On the Internet, it is enough to write: “Toyota Supra tuning”, and you will see hundreds of pages with examples of upgrades and improvements, and all of them are different from each other. That's where there is room for fantasy.

There are also many drift lovers, because the coupe has a rear-wheel drive. Of course, there is no luxury and expensive materials inside the sports coupe, but you should not forget for what purposes they created this car. But the interior is made with high quality, and all the necessary controls are in place. Carrying adults in the back seat is extremely difficult, so the back row is best used for children or transporting things or luggage, especially given the small trunk.

With each subsequent generation, Toyota Supra got better and got a more pleasant appearance with a dynamic and frisky engine. It remains only to wait for the next generation of Toyota Supra 2017, which should cause a huge sensation.

Test Drive

Video review

It's been 25 years since the last Toyota Supra was released. 93 year. At the time, the internet was still in diapers, and all you needed in life was a manual, a turbo 2JZ, a giant trunk spoiler, and the number of your buddy who sells tunes.

New supra

Toyota Supra A80 - milestone automotive history. Fast, not very expensive and tuned to infinity. It was the peak of the Japanese automotive industry in the 1980s and 1990s. And then? Nothing. Silence. Coffin.

Until now, of course. The new toyota supra is finally on the road. And while many details are being kept under wraps, having skimmed through the prototype track by track, I can tell that right now it looks like a golden greatest hits album from all of our favorite cars.

And yes, Toyota was kind enough to pay for a round-trip flight from Belfast to Madrid, a nice hotel in the center of Madrid, dinner, breakfast and lunch.

Return of the legend - Toyota Supra

We need legends. Legends don't die.

Toyota CEO, ardent auto enthusiast Akio Toyoda, a few years ago, despite the fact that under his leadership Japanese auto giant felt good, with decent sales and profit records, recognized that focusing on sales volume is a race in which no one cares about your brand.

So he commissioned Toyota's jogging director Tetsuya Tada to create the GT86, a return to the roots of the good old Celica and rear-wheel drive Corolla AE86. This time, Tada was tasked with bringing Supra back to the 21st century. Then the Gazoo Racing concept. Now the camo prototype of the Supra is spotted at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The new Supra had more hype and teasers than the last Avengers, and even that didn't speed up the car's production line. Production will not begin until next spring. It will be on the market in summer 2019. Pre-orders will open on October 2nd.

What we know and don't know about the Toyota Supra

Final technical specs haven't been released yet (although you don't have to be Lieutenant Colombo to find out) and I still don't know exactly what she looks like without camo.

As for the design, it is mainly BMW. Chassis, three-liter inline six and an eight-speed automatic are all from Munich. Toyota says that software in the "brains" - patented Japanese product, while the engineers openly declare that the engine is "beam".

As I understand it, they themselves do not see anything shameful in this. I asked about whether bmw engine as bulletproof as a Toyota, but I was told it was covered by the standard Toyota warranty and that should be enough.

Although one of the "officials" admitted that he had "lengthy conversations" with the warranty department. What do we have at the moment? A very compact two-seater coupe with a famously painted body and two "bubbles" in the roof, so that even a helmet of the size of Nikolai Valuev could fit under it. Explicit styling of the FT-1 concept.

Well, rear-wheel drive, of course. Front suspension - double wishbone, multi-link - aft. The transmission was not moved back - too heavy, says Tada.

But there are additional adaptive dampers, even-force steering and fairly simple “Normal” and “Sport” electronics settings.

Inside a Toyota Supra

Entering and exiting through the small doors is unusually difficult. This is not Lotus Exige. The cockpit is cozy and more or less free for tall people.

Unlike the last one, this Supra is a pure sports car with no rear seat. I'm taller than 182 cm, and I settled down quite comfortably inside, pressing the bucket close to the back panel. Much of the interior looks like a BMW Z4, though Toyota claims the cabin is unique. I'm not sure yet. Since the cars on the test were prototypes, all but the most important dials and buttons were covered in funny felt masks. Peeking behind them while the PR people were looking away, I found a lot of buttons and switches in BMW style. And even the puck of the iDrive controller.

The steering wheel, paddle shifters, display and everything else speak German. The main visual difference between this cabin and that of the Z4 is that the center console and infotainment screen are separate units, rather than combined like the Bavarians.

I haven't been able to decide how I feel about it. It's clear that the split makes good economic sense, and if saving on a panel is the price of a new Supra, then I'm all for it. But I can't help feeling that it looks a bit like a Mazda MX-5 / Fiat 124 Spider - dangerously close to a direct copy.

To be fair, it's not yet final version, but if they leave things as they are, there will be too much BMW sticking out in the interior and not enough Toyota itself. Well, there is still time to make changes.

Pressing a silver button at the steering wheel, and the inline-six imperceptibly comes to life. The launch occurs in normal mode, without artificial roaring. So in the morning your Supra will not disturb the neighbors.

Hitting the streets, cool sounds and Porsche-like steering. As for a working prototype, our Supra felt remarkably finished. There were some missing pictograms on the plastic (well, where we could see it), but there were no squeaks and rumbles, the engine did not choke or stumble, and, above all, the cars were perfectly controlled.

Toyota says that 90% of the tuning of the car was done on public roads, not on racetracks, and damn it, you feel it. The Supra rides calmly and collectedly, the suspension handles sharp-edged bumps and the usual potholes without a hint of breakdown or excessive stiffness.

On Madrid roads - usually smooth, sometimes with coarse grain and corrugation - she went remarkably. Comfortable, but with an emphasis on stiffness. Exactly right, seriously.

As for taxiing, there is something to discuss. There is some… yes, some feedback. Basically, it concerns the weak feedback with front wheels, like most electric boosters. It is well balanced, but does not indulge in sensations.

In fact, it is very similar to the settings of Le Mans cars. Not very hard, without much effort or weight, you do not get tired of it.

Given the light steering, comfortable suspension and a reasonably spacious cabin, the Supra feels more like a lean Gran Turismo than a tough sports car.

But wait. There will still be. Gotta give her time and find suitable road. Unlike the old A80 which always felt like large car, A90 is comparable to Porsche Cayman.

It weighs about 1.4 tons (weight ratio is 50:50 - remember, this is a BMW) and, despite the height of this engine, has a lower center of gravity than the four-cylinder GT86. In general, the car is agile, paradoxically. In sport mode, the car does not change much, but it becomes livelier. Of course, the motor decides.

And there is a kick, the right kick. Acceleration isn't breathtaking, 4.5 seconds from 0-60 mph or so, but it has plenty of headroom. 340 HP offhand. Since it is already known that the version of the Z4 for the US market will receive 382 hp. and 500 Nm of torque.

Toyota did not touch the engine, only the software, so everything should be very similar. Engineers are avoiding a direct answer, they say homologation has not yet been completed.

Two-thirds of the test route is winding and very mountainous. It's used for rally events, and this is where the Supra goes from fast GT to proper canyon lighter. The steering, as I said above, is not super-informative even in sports mode, but it is always predictable and accurate.

New Toyota supra on the track

Engineers have softened the action of the front stabilizer, removing stiffness in the hunt for big toe. They also added active rear differential. Which, again, is not about drifting, but for clean power transfer to the road and more sharpness on the front wheels.

If you “stomp” sharper, then the stern starts to walk, but this is not an aggressive drift-batch, like a Mustang on a V8. Golden mean between Cayman and 911, if you know what I mean.

The muscle and stability of the 911 mixed with the agility of the Cayman. Plus a nice soundtrack.

On a pre-production prototype like this, it's not worth walking around the track trying to set record times. Which I didn't try to do. But I can say that the sound of this motor never gets boring, even when you repeatedly hammer into the limiter from the descents and rises of Askari to the corners of Portugo.

What more can be said? Well, it almost certainly will. more options engine. Four-cylinder turbocharged versions have been confirmed, plus rumors of hybrids.

Although Toyota is reluctant to say anything specific, one of the senior engineers told us that: "More news on engine development may come later." "One of the joys of launching a sports car is to regularly update the original model." I didn't say it, Tada said it. So think for yourself.

Early verdict

Will one of these updates manual transmission? “We know that mechanics give you more joy while driving, but it's not that simple. The motor has a lot of torque, and you can cope with it by sacrificing the quality of the shift. What Tada does not want to do.

Engineers can figure this out, but Miata-like shifts will come at a cost. Tada says he wants to keep the price of the Supra affordable for the fans, so there's no reason to inflate the budget.

All in all, the new Supra is a car that drives like a Cayman, rides like a Mustang, doesn't sound like a 911, and (must) have Camry quality. Considering how long Toyota has been working on it.

We still need to make sure the final version is the same, but for now, the new Supra is a car worth waiting for.

Model 86 is not for those who love only comfortable cars with expensive materials. If you need a car for amateur racing, then the TRD Special Edition level is the most suitable. For him, the manufacturer Toyota has developed a set of systems for basic equipment.

Toyota knows that it is necessary to install a manual box here. The machine is designed for a wider range of buyers of model 86.

Features of the Toyota supra

Model 86 in 2018 received three levels of equipment. The new top-of-the-line TRD Special Edition will only be produced in quantities of 1,418 units. WITH mechanical box a two-liter block will give out 205 horses and 212 Nm.

With an automatic, power drops to 200 horses and 205 Nm. For model 86, only rear-wheel drive is installed. In the standard, the Toyota manufacturer sets:

  • seventeen inch alloy wheels,
  • automatic led headlights,
  • air conditioner,
  • keyless entry,
  • leather steering wheel.

Due to the huge number of videos about cars with a capacity of 1,000 horsepower and a wide variety of memes from the movie, we have already forgotten why latest model Toyota Supra has become legendary. This is what this car was like before all these myths appeared.

My idea of the world of cars was based on what they wrote on old sites about sports cars and muscle cars of the 1960s and 1970s. And the rest of the information I scooped from magazines. If EVO praised a car, then I liked it too. If the CAR magazine painted Porsche in all colors, then I took it as a common truth.

I still have a habit of looking into old car magazines and reading reviews. Because of all this hype around the appearance new Supra, I decided to see what the most arrogant wrote about this car, that is, I want to say the most knowledgeable experts, when the car had just appeared and was not yet burdened with fame and the Stage 4 turbo kit.

It looks like the guys were very impressed with the car.

In 1994, CAR magazine compared the Supra to the then new BMW E36. It may seem strange today, but in those days, these two cars were matched to match. Here is the whole review, if you have time, read it.

So what are the results of the comparison. Both cars weighed about the same. Both models had a 3 liter inline six-cylinder engine, independent suspension and rear wheel drive.

However, the Supra proved to be much more powerful, thanks to two turbochargers that the M3 did not have. The Supra's cast iron engine block produced 326 horsepower and 577 Nm of torque, according to CAR magazine. Compared to 286 hp. and a torque of 319 Nm y, and this despite the variable valve timing.

I find it curious that in making this comparison of the two cars, CAR magazine leaned more towards BMW. “Where the M3 growls and roars,” writes CAR, “only hums and whistles softly, stunned by its twin turbochargers.” The M3 has a shorter gear, so it immediately takes off from a place, you just need to give it a go. "The old clichés describing this car won't fit."

The Supra appears to have good power, but it's not fun to drive.

In fact, it's not quite like that. The Supra is not only a step ahead of BMW in terms of comfort (better seats), technology (traction control) and optimization, but also has more impressive parametric steering. Thanks to the angle of the wheels, the Supra will shoot through corners like an arrow. It is unlikely that the M3 will be able to do this. BMW still has everything at the back of the car, so it doesn't handle corners well enough, this car can't be blamed for oversteer. Toyota with disabled traction control is absolutely free to behave on the road even in third gear. “Large and voluminous, yes. Bulky and clumsy - no, "this is how the car was described in CAR.

Not everyone fell under the Supra's charm.

So, for example, Motorsport magazine tested the car at the end of 1993 (read the full review here) and gave its opinion:

"not agile and nimble enough to satisfy the driver and not fast enough on winding roads". The reviewers also complained that the traction control slowed down the car, making it "unnatural" and jerky. The reviewers also said they didn't like the car, as it had unnecessary features like air conditioning and cruise control. I told you that the British can be, how shall I put it, picky.

"You can take your right foot off the pedal so you don't have to rev or speed up", Motorsport journalists complained about the "unnatural" traction control system, “and in more extreme cases, you can even feel how the brakes". This puzzled the author of the review very much, apparently, in the early 90s it had not yet come time for traction control.

The authors of the review must be given credit, as they noted that the MKIV Supra has made a huge step forward compared to the models of past years. According to them, "the car looks chic, but its potential to join the ranks of supercars is lost because of the running gear of the car."

Autocar also noted that the MKIV Supra was the third most powerful machine after MKIII, but the latest model was lighter. It also seemed to the authors of the magazine that the steering wheel does not obey the driver well, not like in cars or.

But my favorite reviewer, on the contrary, liked the behavior of the car. Tiff Needell, who took part in many, many years ago, described the Supra as light but strong, fast but reliable, a machine that can be driven every day. "Her manners are impeccable," Tiff shared, and praised that the car doesn't have "all-wheel drive and all those four-wheel steering gimmicks" that were usually present in cars made outside of Japan when the Japanese financial bubble hit.

It's easy to think the Supra is old two-door car with JZ engine. In fact, it is a big, powerful and brutal machine. And even a little more - this is a racing car designed to drive at high speeds. But the car is not devoid of delicacy. Do not forget that whole line factors made the car what it is now.

In early 1993, the Japanese Toyota pleased the world community with the next, fourth generation of its rear-wheel drive sports car Supra with the in-house index "A80", which has been developing since February 1989. Compared to its predecessor, the car survived cardinal changes, and not only external, but also constructive.

In 1996, the two-door was modernized, having received, as a result of it, a corrected appearance and small technical improvements, after which it stood on the conveyor until 2002, without acquiring a direct follower.

And by today's standards, the fourth-generation Toyota Supra looks impressive - the car attracts attention with a swift body silhouette with smooth outlines and verified aerodynamic performance. But, despite the embossed bumpers and a large rear wing on the trunk lid, there is no hint of obvious aggression in the exterior of the sports car, and all thanks to the “friendly” lighting technology and the absence of sharp edges.

The fourth "release" of the Toyota Supra is sports car class "Grand Tourer", which is 4520 mm long, 1275 mm high and 1810 mm wide. Wheelbase a two-door fits into 2550 mm, and under its bottom there is a clearance of 130 mm.

The interior of the Supra A80 declares its sporty essence with all its appearance - the driver is placed in a kind of cockpit with an arcuate front panel, into which three "round" instrument clusters and control units for the audio system, "microclimate" and other functions are built. The decoration of the car is different not only interesting design but also with quality materials and meticulous workmanship.

The car is declared by the manufacturer as a four-seater, but if the front riders are assigned “tenacious” seats with a brightly prominent profile and a sufficient supply of living space, then passengers in the “gallery” will definitely feel inconvenience and a clear lack of space both in the legs and overhead.

The luggage compartment of the fourth generation Toyota Supra fully complies with the canons of the class - its volume in the "stowed" state is only 185 liters. Despite the modest capacity, convenient access is provided to the "hold" thanks to a large tailgate.

Specifications. On the "Supra" of the 4th generation, you can find exclusively gasoline power plants- the car was equipped with in-line six-cylinder units with a volume of 3.0 liters (2997 cubic centimeters) with a 24-valve DOHC timing and distributed fuel supply.

  • under the hood basic versions sports car placed naturally aspirated engine, developing 225 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 284 Nm of peak thrust at 4800 rpm.
  • More productive versions "flaunt" a motor with two turbochargers, the output of which depends on the specification: 280 "mare" at 5600 rpm and 432 Nm of torque at 3600 rpm, or 324 forces at 5600 rpm and 427 Nm of potential at 4000 rpm.

The power units are accompanied by a 6-speed “mechanics” or a 4-speed “automatic”, directing the entire supply of power to the wheels of the rear axle. The most “pumped” car accelerates to a maximum of 250 km / h (the speed is “protected” by electronics), and it can accelerate from zero to the first “hundred” in just 5.1 seconds.

The fourth generation Toyota Supra is based on a rear-wheel drive platform with a supporting body structure, some of the attachments of which are made of aluminum. The undercarriage of the two-door is completely independent - both front and rear use a multi-link design with coaxial shock absorbers, transverse stabilizers and coil springs.
The machine is equipped with a rack and pinion steering system and hydraulic booster steering wheel, and its brake complex is represented by ventilated discs of all wheels and electronic "assistants".

The features of the car are spectacular appearance, high-quality interior, high reliability, powerful engines, excellent dynamics, excellent driving performance and good equipment.
But has a "Japanese" and negative aspects- costly maintenance high flow fuel and a low level of practicality.

Price. The fourth-generation Supra is very popular among Russian motorists, so such a sports car is easy to find on secondary market at a price of 400 thousand rubles and more (it all depends not so much on the year of manufacture and condition, but on the degree of tuning).
