When in 1951, one of the oldest American automakers - Hudson Motor Car Company announced the release of a new model, there was neither hysteria nor huge queues. In part, time did not contribute to this - the Korean War had just begun, and the market was divided between GM, Ford, and Chrysler, which had grown stronger on military orders. However, "Hornet" ("bumblebee"), in comparison with classmates - full-size cars of the above giants, was a fairly progressive design. First of all, it was a monocoque car, sitting quite low to the ground - and at that time, high and narrow chassis and frame structures were still in use. When developing a load-bearing body, the designers decided to play it safe and did not stop strengthening the body until they got a real tank. It got to the point where the B-pillar was usable as a rollover roll cage.

Also, it had the largest at that time, 6-cylinder lower-valve engine in the world - with a volume of 5 liters and with a return of 145 forces (in the course of production it was raised to 160hp). its peculiarity was its high forcing, which, coupled with excellent "accelerating" potential, allowed experienced motorists to accelerate the standard "Hornet" to unprecedented speeds - 180 km / h! At that time, only supercars, or home-made lightweight hot rods, could encroach on this.





While sales were sluggish, the Hornet was carving out a track for itself in the arena of motorsport - which was just emerging in America. The efforts of the engineers on the Hudson, who paid much more attention to the design of the car (than the guys from the Big Three, who think too much about money), were not in vain. "Hornet" literally flew on dirt tracks - its low center of gravity and excellent handling imposed an extremely intense struggle on rival drivers.











But the Hornets' high point came in the developing NASCAR racing circuit. All 4 seasons that it was produced - 1951, 52, 53, 54 years - "Hornet" did not give rivals a chance. All 4 seasons ended with the complete dominance of the light “Hudson” - this record for the number of successive victories has not been broken to this day. The prototype of Doc Hudson, or rather his real-life version, was called the Fabulous Hudson Hornet - it was a racing car specially prepared by Hornet in a two-door "club coupe" body, driven by racers Marshall Teague and Herb Thomas - they gave it this is the title. Soon, the sides were decorated with beautiful vinyls, although the Hornet, completely unlike its competitors, was instantly recognizable without them.





However, as is often the case in the world, wild racing success for a well-made car did not at all mean its commercial success in America. Perhaps the "Big Three" did not pay enough attention to the design of their cars, but alas, money won over enthusiasm here too. In 1954, when the unprofitable Hornet was discontinued, the Hudson company, failing, merged with another unprofitable company, Nash, which had previously specialized in the production of the well-known Metropolitan small cars. In this form, the newborn American Motors concern will exist until the end of the 70s, remaining in the shadow of the "big guys" all the time. Both the car and the character were forgotten and abandoned.

Yes, it was already the second such cup in his modest collection. Most of them froze in surprise, looking first at the cup, then at the happy driver. In a moment, Meter, Luigi, Guido, Flo, Ramon, Sergeant, Fillmore, Sheriff, Sally, Hose... they all began to warmly congratulate McQueen. He was clearly moved by this reception.

However, not all residents of Radiator Springs came out to congratulate the rider. He pulled up to the first turn, which just led to the track, where he and Doc love to compete. He pulled to the right side, but turns to the left - this is the essence of dirt roads. Anyone who does not understand this will certainly not see victory. Finally, McQueen sees a huge rock, behind which is a dark blue car with silver edges that adorned its body. Hudson Hornet was here, and Lightning had no idea how long.

Sorry for the delay, Doc," the young rider apologized as he stopped next to his mentor. He nodded approvingly, thus showing that he was not at all offended by his student.

Both started their engines. McQueen's was much louder and smoother than Doc Hudson's - it had a quieter motor with sometimes distorted sounds, and Doc himself wasn't as fast. They got ready to start, about three tires whistled and both cars rushed off, leaving behind dust that rose like a tuber and could seriously dust the body of the one who would have been left behind.

They drove in sync and were not in such a hurry, as is customary in real races. McQueen often overtook his mentor, but at times he slowed down a bit so as not to offend the old man, and it was boring to lead alone. Hudson was no longer as fast and agile as he showed before. But sometimes he tried to overtake the student, doing it not diligently, but with a smile and a warm twinkle in his soul. Then Lightning also smiled a little and even succumbed.

And now, the impetuous Hudson Hornet is once again taking the lead! The young racer did not try to overtake him, he just enjoyed this race, but one detail made the Lightning brake hard. Unexpectedly, McQueen closes his eyes against the dust that has risen into the air and begins to cough. Doc slows down as well and backs up to the young racer.

What are you up to, youngster? Hudson asked with a note of concern. Catching his breath from the sharp braking, McQueen looks at his mentor in surprise.

You have a crack in the glass... and a dent... Where from?

Doc was a little surprised. He did not know, and could not even imagine that his student would find out about this injury so soon. Hudson closed his eyes and looked away, then stopped next to Lightning.

Suddenly, a small and very awkward silence was broken by Doc, who all this time of his student's thoughts was looking at the sky, painted in the colors of the sunset: white, yellow, orange, crimson ... and all these colors slowly turn into the color of the night sky. And it is the night sky that will soon overshadow all these bright colors.

It's getting dark. I think we should finish the race as soon as possible, - suggested Hudson Hornet and started off, continuing the race. McQueen followed him hesitantly.

It took about a minute of this ride. A light breeze blew, which barely swept away the small grains of sand on the road. For riders who have been riding on dirt roads for quite some time, it seemed that this breeze gave them speed. Mentor and student rode at the same pace, bumper to bumper and wheel to wheel. As they rounded the curve near the cliff, McQueen closed his eyes, feeling a slight freshness from the breeze that touched the glass. Hudson shared the feelings of Lightning, but in one moment everything changed dramatically ...

There was a muffled explosion, and after it a sliding squeak. McQueen snapped to his senses and watched in horror as Doc's tire burst. The old man tried to steer directly, but he accidentally jerked in the wrong direction, turned right onto a steep slope and rolled down.

The dark colors were starting to cover the sunset sky more, making it harder to find Doc among the dirt and cacti. It was a little colder downstairs, but the air was drier, and McQueen could feel it. It seemed to him that at that moment everything was directed against him, but despite all these difficulties, he must find the old man, and if he needs help, be sure to provide it.

From excitement, the oil pressure in the engine began to go off scale. It seemed that she would only get a little excited, and would have to be towed to Luigi and Guido. McQueen's lack of headlights made searching much more difficult. But suddenly a hoarse cough was heard, which echoed in the mind of the young racer ... Lightning indulged in instinct and rushed at all speeds towards the sound.

He drove closer and closer. Now, instead of coughing, you could hear the faint hum of the engine, which sounded like some kind of rattle, but who could have believed it was Doc! What happened to him - McQueen did not understand. He was getting closer and closer, and finally the dark blue spot became clearer. You could already see the silver edges on the body, and half-closed blue eyes. The hood smoked, Hudson's heavy breathing was uneven ...

- D-doc... Lightning said softly and approached the hot car. Doc, seeing his student, smiled, despite the pain he now felt.

Plot


The animation hero is a racing car nicknamed "Lightning" McQueen, who lives at high speed. At the beginning of the cartoon, during the Piston Cup, due to damaged tires, he finishes at the same time as Chico and King, so the judges organize a decisive race in the state of California. Heading there, McQueen falls out of the trailer carrying him in his sleep. Hoping to catch up with the trailer, he gets lost along the way, breaks every possible rule, and ends up under arrest in a provincial town located on Highway 66 called Radiator Springs. There, the racer meets other cars: the tractor Metre, the tattoo artist Ramon, the judge Doc (who turns out to be a famous racer in the past), an Italian sales car named Luigi and the beautiful Sally Carrera. All of them become Lightning's friends, helping him see the meaning of life in simple "car" joys, and not just in the ongoing race for success and fame. McQueen helps his friends breathe new life into the city, which has disappeared from all road maps, after a modern highway has been bypassed. He made it to California and led the race, but stopped to help King, who was knocked out by Chico Hicks, drive to the finish line. Chico Hicks became champion, but Lightning McQueen did a good deed.

Inside, passengers expected a truly huge cabin. The record-breaking sofa, formally a three-seater, without much hesitation accepted four adults into its arms. In the early 50s, the NASCAR racing series was rapidly gaining popularity. Liberal rules and generous prize money attracted more and more new participants to the start every year. Soon, automotive companies realized the charm of the new championship. After all, the pilots fought each other behind the wheel of practically serial models - “stock cars”, which literally means “standard cars”.

Already in 1951, auto repair shop owner Marshall Teague won the prestigious Daytona 500 miles driving a Hudson. His car was inferior to rivals in maximum speed on straight lines, but in protracted turns, the “hornet”, due to its design, more than recouped.

Teague soon found himself at Hudson's Detroit office to negotiate factory support for his own racing program. The firm gave him three cars and mechanical engineer Vince Piggins. But even such modest costs turned out to be quite enough - by the end of the season, the racing “hornets” will have time to win thirteen NASCAR stages and take third place in the team standings.

The Hudson emblem is more like the city's coat of arms. At the heart of the logo is a triangle symbolizing the "dynamics", "reliability" and "value" of the brand's cars. Later, ships were added to the triangle, hinting at the high engineering potential of the company, and fortress towers - a symbol of stability and reliability.

In the off-season, Teague and Piggins gave the car a good shake-up, paying special attention to the engine. The new engine, loosely called the 7-X, was a boosted version of the standard straight-six with straight-through exhaust, increased compression, larger valves and a twin carburetor. Thanks to these tricks, power from the standard 145 hp. soared up to 210 "horses". And as soon as the best car in terms of handling received a decent engine, it had no rivals on the track. In the 1952 championship season, the Hornets won 27 out of 33 races, still a NASCAR record. In 1953, the Hudson racers put in another 22 stages, which was more than enough for another title.

The only pity is that the racing exploits of the “mythical hornet” did not affect the sad fate of the Hudson brand in any way - sales have been declining since 1950. Full-size Hudsons were expensive from the start - the 1948 model was $450 more expensive than its predecessor. And when the Big Detroit Three began a price dumping policy, all the smaller companies were the losers. Sadly, the design of the car itself played its role. The Hornet, complex in engineering terms, was difficult to modernize. While GM and Chrysler models offered customers new stylistic delights every year, Hudson models remained the same. Worse, the squat, aerodynamic shape of the car fell out of fashion very quickly. Perhaps the matter could still be corrected by investing in the development of a new generation of the model, but Hudson management put everything on another card - the Jet compact sedan. And they didn't guess. Jet, the creation of which took the last money, a resounding failure in the market.

On May 2, 1954, the Hudson Motor Cars Company ceased to exist, becoming part of the newly organized American Motors. Well, the “mythical hornet” remained the brightest spot in the biography of the forgotten Detroit brand.

Did it ever imply what exactly happened to Doc Hudson between the events of Cars and Cars 2? At one point, one of the characters says something like, "Doc would be proud of you." My guess is that the reason for the character's exclusion is that Paul Newman wasn't signed.
