At home, the car finds its application in a fairly wide field of activity: from ordinary utilitarian taxis to "bossy" cars with a luxurious interior and a lot of "gadgets" designed to provide complete comfort for those who are used to looking at the world exclusively from the car window, conveniently lounging on the back sofa.
The premiere of Toyota Crown in a new body took place at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1995. Compared with the previous generation, the number of modifications has significantly expanded. This is partly due to the fact that in the same year the production of the eighth generation sedan was discontinued, which lasted longer than the due date on the assembly line, and the tenth generation was already represented by two types of bodies: hardtop and sedan. In addition, in order to expand the boundaries of sales, left-hand drive analogues were offered for other markets. In both bodies, all-wheel drive versions (only with automatic transmission) were offered, which were not available in previous generations, and sedans also had “mechanics” (the simplest Super Deluxe equipment). The most expensive versions are still the chic hardtops of the Royal Series trim levels. In addition to the luxurious Royal Saloon modification, the Royal Touring modification with a sports suspension can be distinguished. After the completion of the release of the hardtop of this series in 1999, the sedan was produced before 2001.

As for engines, their number has not changed compared to the previous generation. Of the gasoline ones, these are still popular for those years in-line "sixes", which are highly reliable: 1G-FE with a capacity of 135 hp; 2.5-liter unit 1JZ-GE (180 hp) and three-liter D-4 2JZ-GE (220 hp). However, shortly after the release of the tenth generation, the 1JZ (1996) and 1G (1998) engines underwent modernization, receiving a VVT system, an intake manifold geometry change system, distributorless ignition and an electronically controlled throttle. Their power has increased, respectively, to 160 and 200 hp, but at the same time, the requirements for operation have also increased, especially for the 1G engine, on which now, in particular, the valves are bent when the timing belt breaks. The 2L-TE turbodiesel and the 1G-GPE gasified modification were intended to a greater extent for commercial purposes: taxis, rentals, service delivery cars, etc.

As mentioned above, the Toyota Crown S150 now has a load-bearing body, and the steering system is represented by a rack and pinion drive, which radically - for the better - affected the handling. The choice of the car was offered with different types of transmission: 5-speed manual, 4- and 5-speed automatic. The latter is in expensive trim levels. Front and rear suspension Toyota Crown - independent. On all-wheel drive versions, a FullTime type system was used: permanent all-wheel drive with an asymmetrical center differential and a hydromechanical lock-up clutch. 11 generation

Toyota Crown is one of the most luxurious cars designed for the Japanese domestic market. The first copies of the eleventh generation (170th body) rolled off the assembly line in September 1999. Compared to its predecessor, the new Crown has added a few centimeters in width and length, has become a little higher, thereby increasing the interior space. The changes also affected the layout of the engine compartment, the front overhang became shorter, although the wheelbase did not change. The fuel tank has shifted to the center, which has freed up additional space for the trunk. In terms of design, the model has largely retained the features of the previous generation, but received smoother body lines. The release of a hardtop that did not meet modern safety requirements had to be abandoned.
On the other hand, Crown is now represented by different modifications: Royal and Athlete, each with its own set of trim levels. In the 130th body, there was already a complete set with this name, but now it has been put forward for a separate equipment level. If Crown Royal is a "classic of the genre", then Athlete is the same Crown, but with a sporty character. Accordingly, there are other suspension settings, another (5-speed) automatic transmission, less ground clearance. External differences are also striking - in optics, bumpers, a radiator grille, and a pattern of alloy wheels. Both versions provide a very wide range of equipment both as standard and as additional options. The Athlete modification formed the basis for the creation of the Crown Estate station wagon (the previous Crown Wagon station wagon in the 130th body was hopelessly outdated in 11 years of its existence). Four round headlights, a mesh radiator grille, a tuning suspension went to the new model from a sports modification, however, like other accessories: a leather steering wheel, special seats, xenon headlights.

Toyota Crown in the 170th body was equipped with several types of engines. The base power unit for the Royal and Estate Athlete E-type trims was a two-liter 1G-FE with 160 hp. Higher trim levels were equipped with 2.5- and 3.0-liter JZ series engines. They were also installed on the Crown Athlete, and the base was a 2.5-liter with 196 hp, and the Athlete V versions were equipped with a turbocharged 1JZ-GTE with 280 hp. For the Crown Royal, a “mild hybrid” option was also offered - a three-liter 2JZ-FSE combined with an electric motor. The power of such a power plant is 200 hp.

The Toyota Crown's suspension provides an exceptional level of comfort, but it lacks some stiffness, which is why on our roads, where active steering is often required from the driver, the Crown's smooth and majestic ride turns into roll and lack of controllability. That is why the more “collected” version of Athlete is much more in demand. Some Crown trims came in all-wheel drive versions: 4 WD FullTime with an asymmetrical center differential and a hydromechanical lock-up clutch. Expensive configurations were equipped with air bags instead of springs.

NASVA has crash-tested this generation of Toyota Crown twice, in 1999 and 2001. The vehicle demonstrated body integrity in full overlap and sideshift frontal impacts. In the latter case, the only complaints were made for the deformation of the feet of the driver and passenger, despite the fact that, in general, the position of the dummies after the collision was completely preserved. An excellent result was demonstrated in a side impact, while even the possibility of opening both doors was preserved. A new strategy was put forward: "Not just performance, but style." Moreover, both the first and the second should not compete, but act in close unity. A completely new chassis was created that could take on a larger body. In terms of interior space, the new Crown surpassed the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5-series. The base and length of both axles have increased, while the load on them is distributed so as to achieve maximum controllability. In the external details, the desire of designers is clearly visible not only to make the car stylish, but also to improve the aerodynamics of its body. Thanks to the active use of parts made of aluminum alloys, it was possible to make the car lighter. And this, in turn, played a positive role in improving the speed characteristics of the new car.

A no less revolutionary decision touched engines - in-line “sixes”, with which Toyota premium cars were traditionally associated, went into oblivion. They were replaced by engines of the new GR series, first introduced in 2003 in the domestic Japanese market. These are six-cylinder V-shaped engines with a volume of 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 liters with a capacity of 215, 256 and 315 horsepower, respectively. As with the previous generation, the 2003 Crown was offered in two versions: the plush Royal and the sportier Athlete with stiffer suspension. And, as before, the most powerful engine was installed only on the Crown Athlete, complete with a 6-speed gearbox. However, it could also be chosen for trim levels with a lower rank. A 5-speed automatic transmission was standard. A rich list of equipment relied on both modifications and was designed to satisfy the needs of the most demanding customers. The key accent in the Athlete configuration is sportiness, which is indicated by a more predatory “muzzle” with a mesh radiator grille, wide cutouts in the front bumper, and round “eyes” of fog lamps. The modification of the Crown Hybrid with a hybrid power plant looks different in small things - a slightly different grille, light blue rear optics, a THS2 label under the rear right lamp. The power of the 2GR-FSE with a mechanical supercharger reached 360 hp, and the torque rose from 368 to 498 Nm. Such an indicator as specific power is only 4.69 kg per force! The same 3.5-liter 2GR-FSE served as the basis for the second-generation hybrid power plant.
