The Ford Focus ST hatchback based on the second generation of the Focus, at the time of its appearance, became the most powerful and fastest modification of the Focus. Be that as it may, the Ford Focus 2 ST turned out to be a worthy successor to the traditions of “charged hatchbacks”: it circles the Nurburgring's Nordschleife 10 seconds faster than the first-generation RS.

The external differences between the ST modification and the standard "civilian Focus's" are skillfully hidden from the uninitiated. The only thing that catches the eye is the rims of the original design, but the exhaust pipe sockets spaced on both sides of the bumper. And only a trained eye will notice the repeaters of the “turn signals” on the front fenders, a different grille and, in fact, a new front bumper.

If we talk about the technical characteristics of the Ford Focus 2 ST - here, as we noted above, the engine borrowed by Ford's in the Volvo division. This is a five-cylinder turbocharged power unit, with an in-line arrangement of cylinders, the working volume of which is almost 2.5 liters. The third generation of the "hot" five-door with the prefix ST, developed by the global division of the company "Global Performance Vehicles", was first presented to the world community in September 2011 at the stands of the international Frankfurt Motor Show. Compared to its predecessor, the car has changed in all directions, losing the three-door body along the way.

At the end of June 2014, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the premiere of the restyled Ford Focus ST took place. and recalibrated steering and stabilization system. In this form, it was produced until 2018, when it gave way to its successor.

Externally, the third generation Ford Focus ST looks attractive, harmonious and quite restrained, regardless of the bodywork.   • The second is a Duratorq TDCi aluminum diesel engine with a working volume of 2.0 liters with a turbocharger, Common Rail battery “power” and a 16-valve timing structure, which generates 185 hp. at 3500 rpm and 400 Nm of torque at 2000-2750 rpm.

From standstill to 100 km/h, the car accelerates after 6.5-8.3 seconds, and reaches a maximum of 217-248 km/h.

From a technical point of view, the Ford Focus ST of the third incarnation repeats the standard model - it is based on the C1 front-wheel drive platform with independent suspensions “in a circle” (McPherson strut front and multi-link rear).

Its distinctive features include stiffer springs, dampers and pivot joints, as well as thicker anti-roll bars. The vehicle is equipped with an adaptive electric power steering located in the steering rack housing.

At the Moscow dealership of Ford, they simply handed me the keys and documents for the new Focus ST and sent me alone to the huge parking lot behind the car. I did not know the exact location of the search object, but I did not doubt for a second that I would find it immediately among dozens of other machines.

Undoubtedly, Ford chose the main color for its hot hatchback - orange: it catches the eye and changes the aura, turning a quite standard look of a 3-door golf-class representative into a revealingly extraordinary one. However, not only the color is ready to please the appearance of the hot Focus. In front, the aggressive nature of the "clockwork orange" is given out by a new bumper with a black mouth of the air intake - just look, it will bite the exhaust pipe of some teapot that gapes in the left lane. Fog lights (front and rear) received silver trim. On the front fenders appeared shiny plates with the abbreviation ST - in the manner of BMW. The tailgate is decorated with a dashing rear wing, and the exhaust pipes eloquently protrude from under the rear bumper. Not to mention the turn signals in the rear-view mirror housings and the aerodynamic ribs on the rear arches. I open the massive door. The interior of the sports version looks richer than the standard one. And a little more fun, despite the ubiquitous dark skin. A visor appeared in the center of the panel, under it there are 3 dials. These are indicators of oil pressure and temperature, as well as the pressure of air injected into the cylinders. Sports set! The three-spoke steering wheel with metal overlays and the letters ST is sheathed in perforated leather, working with it is a pleasure. The numbers on the dashboard have become slightly larger. The metal pedals are equipped with rubber inserts - the soles do not slip, the moves are small. The brake drive is slightly shifted to the accelerator pedal - so that a real athlete can press them with one foot. Recaro seats are very similar to those on the Mondeo ST 220 - comfortable, with good lateral support. The adjustments here are strictly mechanical.

The technical part refers to the Volvo brand. We have already had to deal with the power unit that is installed on the Focus ST - the turbocharged inline 20-valve “five” is also equipped with the S40 T5. However, it would be naive to believe that this motor is installed on the flagship Focus without alterations. The nature of the engine has changed thanks to different nozzles, new ignition maps, a lightweight flywheel, as well as a proprietary Ti-VCT system (variable valve timing on the intake and exhaust). The engineers were faced with the task of making a smooth and flexible motor, and it was solved with brilliance. The power unit is ready to offer the driver 320 Nm of torque in the range from 1600 to 4000 rpm. Maximum power is available at 6000 rpm - close to the limit.

In addition, the gentlemen from Ford, of course, worked on the sound of the engine. Focus ST during acceleration emits an impressive growl in the medium speed zone, and when re-gassing, it is fired off by the exhaust system. Nice! The Swedish relative in the concern and the platform did not possess such outstanding vocal abilities.

In general, the creators position the Focus ST not at all as an uncompromising sports weapon. On the contrary, they emphasize that the car was conceived as a vehicle for every day, but for a gourmet driver. Who will appreciate not only the degree of understanding with the car in extreme conditions, but also how it behaves in normal, “civilian” conditions.

A little more theory - a few words about the body and suspension of the Focus ST. There are few changes in the power structure. Unlike, for example, Mazda engineers, who drastically strengthened the body of the “three” and “six” before turning them into MPS, Ford got off with a minimum of modifications, considering the initial data of the model sufficient. The first revision is the strut between the front struts. The second is a modified front suspension subframe, which now has thicker walls.

More in the news bulletin. The springs have become stiffer by a third, new shock absorbers have appeared. The rear anti-roll bar is 1 mm thicker (the front one remains the same). The understatement was 150 mm. Wheels to choose from - 17 or 18 inches. On our car - the first option.

As you can see, the amount of alterations is not the most impressive. However, it was enough to bring the chassis in line with the powerful torque motor and provide the driver with a lot of riding pleasure.

Now that driver is me. I move in a dense atmosphere of benevolent attention - both neighbors along the stream and pedestrians are of great interest to me. The car pleases others like the arrival of spring ...

The main driver's impression is the waves of smooth, assertive acceleration that the car bestows. A couple of times there was diesel deja vu. You switch, and if the arrow is in the mentioned interval of 1600-4000 rpm (which happens quite often), then the Focus ST easily rushes forward even in sixth gear! This is especially true in fast corners - the Focus is ready to accelerate powerfully at any moment.

The car is surprisingly comfortable for a charged hatchback. Shock absorbers can easily cope even with narrow metal “cops”, which are now found everywhere. There are no inconveniences when driving on Moscow roads, devoid of quality due to the winter period. But did the handling suffer?

To be honest, it could have been better. The steering is sharp - from lock to lock the steering wheel makes less than 2.5 turns. However, Focus ST reactions lack clarity. This is especially noticeable with small movements of the steering wheel - the car reacts to them with a delay. According to subjective sensations, the suspension lacks elasticity.

In turns, the Focus immediately shows a tendency to understeer, but under the release of gas it changes its character - the rear suspension first holds on to the coating, steering, and then the wheels break into a slip. On the snow, this gives a certain pleasure - a short steering wheel, front-wheel drive, a torque motor that is ready to be pulled out almost always ... You can (and regularly - need to) go through the arc in a slide, accelerating your blood and reminding ST that he is an unusual Focus!

The brakes on the Focus ST are more powerful than the standard ones. Discs with a diameter of 320 mm are installed at the front, 280 at the rear, calipers and brake pad area are increased. The car slowed down during the almost winter test perfectly. The 6-speed gearbox also worked without comment - a convenient lever, perfectly matched gear ratios, clear inclusions.

I drove the Focus ST for three days and a little more at night. I think that the creators of the car have achieved their goal. They wanted to make a hot hatchback for everyday use - and they did. Driving performance and comfort level are combined in the right proportion, and the orange color creates a mood that is very appropriate in the conditions of winter-spring beriberi. However, it is always helpful.

On the track, it's just super, in sixth gear, pressing the pedal a little, the Ford Focus II ST is undermined very cheerfully, yet the 2.5-liter turbo engine from the sports Volvo T5 makes itself felt. Driving this car is not annoying at all, both in the city and on the highway. I was very pleased with the consumption on the highway if you don’t push hard and drive 100-120 km / h - the consumption turned out to be 7.5 liters per 100 km, this is in the summer season, in winter it’s 3-4 liters more, well, this is if gasoline is “98” and of good quality, in less than 12-15 liters in the city did not work because there are a lot of traffic jams. The suspension is very "knocked down" - and not soft and not hard, but quite comfortable there is no such feeling that you are sitting on a stool. The salon is spacious and it is very comfortable to sit in the "Recar" chairs, as for the interior trim, they could, of course, do better, add more quality materials, but the interior turned out to be not creaky. Like other cars, the Ford Focus II ST has its own “sores”, such as the oil separator membrane is torn and the camshaft seals are squeezed out - this is the most common disease. To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to clean the VGK (crankcase ventilation) once a year and this will not happen and rubber, pads and brake discs wear out very quickly. Much more significant changes from the usual "Focus" are hidden inside the body. Under the hood, a Volvo in-line turbocharged five was registered, with a volume of 2.5 liters, coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission, modified by Ford specialists. Different from the usual "Focus" chassis. The interior trim does not differ radically from the usual one, with the exception of a carbon-fiber dashboard finish, a more sporty steering wheel, pedal covers, black headlining, and a “Recar” interior (all four seats). The music is stock, the radio catches well, but the MP-3 does not, although it sounds tolerable to my ears. The engine is started from the button (for a long time I could not get used to it). The tuned exhaust system of the Ford Focus II ST comes from the factory, "growls" as if there is a V-8 under the hood, but at the same time does not load. I’ll say right away for skeptics that nothing broke in 4 months and almost 15,000 kilometers.

This car is really ready to give you emotions every day, for which, of course, you have to pay in a timely manner, as with any “lighter”. This is a worthy competitor to all "HOT-hatch" and not only. Most people think it's just a flashy Ford Focus, let them think it's even easier for me. It looks interesting when you look in the mirror, and there the spot is moving away, and its last horses are trying to catch up with you. This looks really funny. Comfort is present in the Ford Focus II ST, especially in the RECARO seats. It has all the modern gadgets that I adore so much (of the important ones, I will note keyless start, entry, adaptive light, etc.). Given that the car is 2006, there are really a lot of them. In addition, Ford took care of retrofitting. The wiring on the ST or RS is complete and designed for additional gadgets, which is what I like. There is something about the Ford Focus II ST that provokes you. Yes, yes, he is the most T5 from VOLVO (5 cylinders with a turbine make themselves felt already from 1800 rpm). This is unrealistically wild pickup, with a pleasant sounding exhaust. I’m already silent about what happens to her when you do a “not big” tuning. The suspension in the Ford Focus II ST is not a “grinder”, well, it’s not soft, in short, it is sharpened for the city, which is really enough for “sport”. In general, I am satisfied with the car, there are a lot of plans for the Ford Focus II ST.

Great car, perhaps the most beloved of all that were before it. If I'm not mistaken, it's already the seventh. Ford Focus II ST is my first "turbo car", which pleases every day. The surrounding car also pleases, but only in color, its capabilities annoy almost everyone, as it provokes me to a relatively aggressive driving style. Very pleased with the low fuel consumption: 13-15 liters per hundred. By the way, the tax on 225 horses is also not space. Of course, there are also disadvantages and it cannot be said that there are not enough of them. For me, the main thing is that you can’t drive on the Ford Focus II ST, especially on the “long-distance” route, on our roads. The 40th profile periodically reminds of itself. However, I think that this is one of the best options in terms of price / horses / quality plus a bright color.
