Safety

Objectively, it cannot be said that the “second Soul” has become worse in terms of security, but formally it is so: if the first generation of “Soul” received five stars in Europe according to the results of crash tests, then the second ( after tightening EuroNCAP regulations) received only four stars in November 2014 (which were further confirmed in December 2015 and August 2016).

According to the American IIHS crash test standards in 2018, KIA Soul received a “Good” rating in all assessed parameters, having received the “2018 Top Safety PICK +” award.

Flaws

Despite the excellent geometric cross-country ability and a clearance of 164 mm, the KIA Soul was created as a city car, so it feels extremely insecure on bumpy country roads - it twitches a lot in a rut, overcomes obstacles too hard and is prone to diagonal buildup when driving holes at high speed.

The problem of a small trunk has also remained, which, although it has “grown up”, is not as strong as it is necessary for regular trips to the country.

KIA announced plans to release an electric version of the Soul in the fall of 2013, and already in February 2014 (at the Chicago auto show), the public was shown a serial sample of the Soul EV.

After that, electric car sales started: first in Korea (May 2014); then in Europe (July of the same year); and in October in California, New York, New Jersey, Oregon and Maryland, i.e. in the territories of the United States, where the corresponding infrastructure is best developed ... The electric Soul never reached Russia.

At the start of sales, the Soul EV was equipped with a set of 96 lithium-polymer batteries with a total capacity of 27 kWh and an electric motor with a capacity of 109 hp. (285 Nm), the combination of which allows you to accelerate the electric Soul from 0 to 100 km / h in 9.5 seconds.

Later, the car underwent modernization, in which it received new battery by 30 kWh, which allowed to increase the stock autonomous running up to 179 km according to the EPA cycle.

From the express charging station, the battery "electro-Soul" is charged in 30 minutes by 80% (charging time from a "regular outlet" is about 4-5 hours.

KIA plans to replace this method with a system wireless charging, which in technical center Hyundai-Kia (HATCI) was tested in the USA on the KIA Soul EV.

The Korean auto giant KIA crossed the mark of 5,000 sold Soul EVs already in August 2015, and in January 2016 the volume of sold electric vehicles reached 10,000 copies, while almost 7,000 of them were sold in Europe.

Special versions

As with the first generation, Soul's second generation also received several special versions released in limited edition.

In 2014 saw the light KIA Soul Red Zone for the North American market, sold in quantities of exactly 2,000 copies.

This version featured a plastic body kit with red piping, leather upholstery, sports pedals, lots of red accents on interior trim, 18-inch rims and a 2.0-liter engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

In 2016, the turn of the version came KIA Soul Autonomous Vehicle, on which the Korean automaker tested the innovative DriveWise system, which combines all existing driver assistance systems (ADAS) into one.

The premiere show of the third generation KIA Soul was held on November 28, 2018 during the Los Angeles Auto Show. Which showed three versions of the novelty (intended for the North American market):

In our country, the third generation Soul received three gasoline engines and three gearbox options, while of the cars shown in Los Angeles, only the Soul GT version will reach Russian roads, but in the future, Soul X-Line modifications may also appear, since such a style of crossovers in the Russian Federation is in high demand.

But in Europe, hooked "on the game of environmental friendliness", the third "Soul" will be represented only by the electric version of the EV, which is in demand there even more than in the sunny states of the United States.

The previous two generations of Soul have won a lot of awards, especially in the field of design, so when working on the third generation, the Koreans took into account the need to preserve the continuity of generations and its characteristic, almost iconic, design features.

The Korean Kia Soul has finally appeared in an updated form. The second generation from the moment of the presentation promised to be more functional and comfortable. At least that's how the news came to the media. The premiere of the new city compact van took place in the spring of 2013. The event took place in largest city USA - New York, which explains its pomp and enchantment. The start of sales took place just six months later on the European continent and America, and the car reached the domestic market just recently.

How much does Kia Soul cost in Russia?

It is not very easy to make an essentially ordinary urban hatchback, by changing the shape of the body, as practical as possible and similar to a mid-size crossover. Just such a goal was set by the designers of the Korean company, headed by the chief designer, Peter Schreyer. The very concept of an SUV is called into question in such an idea, because the main purpose of such vehicles is off-road driving. In a metropolis, drivers face completely different problems, the specifics of which need to be taken into account by developers. In addition, the level of functionality, comfort, driving performance definitely needs to be reviewed.

What did we end up with? Surprising as it may seem, this is a car with the appearance of a compact crossover, designed for city driving. This description best describes updated kia Soul 2. Perhaps the fact that three of the largest studios in Germany, Korea and the USA worked on the creation of the model at the same time contributed to such success. The best practices of each layout were embodied in the final version of the concept. The designers, in an incomprehensible way, managed to radically change the "stuffing" of the car, but at the same time maintain the appearance familiar to the fans.

We can say with confidence that the restyling benefited the car. The changes affected almost everything - the body, platform, technical characteristics, equipment of the center console. The front part of the car completely resembles the classic version of a severe SUV with a massive bumper, a flexible aerodynamic lip, rough oval headlights, closed in transparent plastic. The huge false radiator grille is divided into two sections. The upper one seems so small and insignificant against the background of the lower one that the question arises why it is needed at all. Air intakes are also located in the center. It is also noteworthy that the foglights are not located in classic wells, but, on the contrary, literally protrude from the surface of the body.

Viewing the Kia Soul 2 from the side reveals a sharp bend at the end of the roof. Literally for a second, the image of the “criminal” Gelenvagen appears before my eyes, although almost immediately it becomes clear that the similarity is minimal. It is in this perspective that one feels that the dimensions have been increased, and in all directions. At the same time, the body has become more massive, the lines are smoother and straighter. In general, the appearance of the Kia Soul has become more charismatic and remarkable. In addition, the developers claim that they made the body 30% stiffer, which affects the safety of passengers and the driver while driving. They managed to achieve this by increasing the strength of individual load-bearing components of the body. The weighting of the Kia Soul increased the pressure on the suspension, which required some refinement and became lower.

Dimensions, as mentioned earlier, have been increased upwards:
