The new Mini Cooper 2018-2019 is built on the UKL front-wheel drive platform with a MacPherson strut front suspension and a rear multilink. With the change of generations, the model has added in size on all fronts. The hatchback with a three-door body reaches a length of 3,821 mm (+ 98), a width of 1,727 mm (+ 44), and a height of 1,414 mm (+ 7). The wheelbase is 2495 mm.

As for the five-door, it turned out to be longer (3,982 mm) and higher (1,425 mm). The distance between the axles here is 2,567 millimeters. In curb condition, the three-door Cooper weighs 1,085 kg, while its more practical variant weighs 1,145 kg.

The trunk volume of the hatchback is frankly modest - only 211 liters. The Cooper 5D version is slightly more spacious - 278 hp. The backs of the rear sofa on both versions fold into the floor in a ratio of 60:40, which allows you to load a compartment of 731 and 948 liters.

The 3rd generation MINI Cooper is equipped by default with a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo engine with 136 hp. and 220 Nm, while the more expensive version with the “S” index is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo four that develops 192 “horses” and 280 Nm of torque.

The top version of the Mini called John Cooper Works boasts a 2.0-liter engine with a return of 231 hp and 320 Nm. The engines listed above work either in conjunction with a six-speed mechanics, or with a similar machine, while only automatic transmission is installed on the JCW.

In terms of safety, the car has taken a step forward: the hatch is equipped with both passive and active safety equipment. The driver is equipped with a parking assistant, an urban collision avoidance system (works at speeds up to 60 km/h), a front impact warning system (works at speeds above 60 km/h), as well as a traffic sign recognition function and much more.

Exterior

Working on the design of the Mini Cooper 2018-2019 in a new body, the designers of the British brand tried to preserve the brand features of the model, while making the look of the compact hatchback more solid and masculine.

They did an excellent job with the task: the third Cooper remained recognizable, but at the same time it seems noticeably more mature than its predecessor. At the front, the car received a different bumper with large fog lamps and a massive hexagonal grille.

The British did not abandon the branded rounded optics, while the headlights got a chrome trim and a revised filling with LED DRL sections (for a surcharge, you can order full LED headlights).

The profile of the new MINI Cooper 2019 is also quite interesting. The hatchback has a short bonnet, near-vertical windshield and a completely flat roofline with stylish black pillars, while swollen wheel arches and sills are framed by protective strips of unpainted plastic.

By default, the “British” is set to 16-inch wheels, however, in the top trim levels, the wheels go to 18″ (the latter look very impressive). At the stern of the Mini Cooper, massive lamp shades are installed, which received a neat chrome trim. Plus, the shape of the trunk lid and rear bumper have undergone changes.

Salon

The interior of the Mini Cooper is completely new after the generation change, although in general its style is again reminiscent of previous generations. The design of the front panel has been redesigned for ergonomics, with twelve different materials to choose from.

The hatchback dashboard now consists of a large speedometer dial, which is complemented by a color display of the on-board computer, as well as a “crescent” tachometer. This combination looks fresh and stylish, but how well it reads on the road is another question.

A modest TF screen is installed on the center console of the 2019 Mini Cooper, but on more expensive modifications (or for a surcharge), the car is equipped with an 8.8-inch touch screen multimedia system. This screen is built into a branded "saucer", which pleases the eye with a changing rim illumination.

It is impossible not to note the stylish three-spoke steering wheel with contrasting stitching and elegant sagging on the rim. Compared to its predecessor, on the spokes of the new "steering wheel" there is a whole scattering of buttons responsible for controlling various functions of the car.

The salon of the new Cooper is remembered not only by the stylish design of the front panel, but also by the quality of the finishing materials. The car has received new door cards, and the seats have a combination of leather and checkered fabric inserts, although there are some other options to choose from.

The driver's seat and front passenger have a well-thought-out backrest profile and developed side support rollers. The rear double sofa in terms of comfort is noticeably inferior to the front seats, and there is relatively little space in the gallery, although, according to the British, there is still more free space in the back than it was before.

Review of the Mini Cooper S 5D 2018-2019: appearance, interior, specifications, equipment, parameters, security systems and price. At the end of the article, a photo and video review of the Mini Cooper S 5D 2018.

Review content:

At different times and in different countries, compact and economical cars have always been in demand. Some models did not exist for long, but there are also models that created a whole cult of fans. One such example is the famous British Mini Cooper. The car was first introduced in 1959, for that time it was a significant breakthrough and drivers of all ages quickly fell in love with the novelty.

The classic model is considered a three-door version, with round headlights and rough roof shapes. Progress does not stand still and buyers always want more, besides, the fashion for two-door cars is gradually moving away in favor of a sedan or 5-door. The British manufacturer wasted no time in developing and introducing the 5-door version of the Mini Cooper. Many will say that the same Countryman or Clubman already exists as a 5-door version, but alas, this is a crossover class, and not a compact hatchback. The regular 5-door Mini Cooper was the first to be presented, and not so long ago, a charged version was introduced, also known as the Mini Cooper S 5D.

With the usual 5-door Mini Cooper, the differences are minimal, but still, the charged version of the hatchback looks an order of magnitude richer and more stylish. In addition to the standard variants of the Mini Cooper S, the manufacturer offers many options to emphasize and diversify the usual look of a hatchback. In the article, we will consider a charged 5-door hatchback Mini Cooper S 2018-2019, also named by the manufacturer as 5D.

Exterior hatchback Mini Cooper S 2018-2019

The appearance of the 5-door hatchback Mini Cooper S 2018-2019 is almost no different from the usual 3-door counterpart. But if you take a good look, then there are still differences, both in the door frames themselves and in individual details of the exterior. The front of the new charged Mini Cooper S stands out with a more evil grille and an additional one at the bottom of the bumper. The radiator grille includes a large number of small parts, including sensors and sensors for security systems. The upper part is made of black mesh insert.

Below the grille is divided into two parts by a black glossy wide strip and a small chrome one. In addition, to recognize trim levels, the letter “S” has been added to the grille, denoting a charged Mini Cooper S model. Depending on the wishes of the buyer, the grille trim can be black glossy or chrome. Another detail that says that the model belongs to a special series is the front bumper.

The lower part in the center is occupied by an additional radiator grill, divided into three parts. On the sides of the bumper are two round LED foglights in a rectangular frame. To finally emphasize the bottom of the 5-door Mini Cooper S 2018-2019, it was decorated with black plastic protection, the same one is installed around the perimeter of the entire hatchback body.

The hood of the new Mini Cooper S 5D 2018-2019 is quite peculiar, the designers tried to minimally modify it, leaving it the same as in the 3-door version. On the sides of the hood, as before, they placed oval optics, with a dedicated black border. The optics itself, depending on the configuration, will be based on halogens or LED elements, but according to the standard, the circumference is decorated with LED daytime running lights. For the maximum configuration of the Mini Cooper S 5D 2018, matrix headlights will be installed.

The central part of the hood of the long Mini Cooper S is decorated with a small air intake and the classic emblem of the company. From the inconspicuous details of the hood, a small ledge can be noted, behind the air intake, closer to the windshield. Thus, the designers hid some of the engine parts. Depending on the wishes of the buyer, two stripes of black or white can be applied to the hood of the Mini Cooper S 2018-2019 hatchback, or left without decorations at all. In fact, the hood performs several functions, including wings and a carrier, for fastening the front optics. The hatchback windshield remains the same, slightly rounded and slightly sloped. Depending on the configuration of the Mini Cooper S 2019 hatchback, the windshield is fully or partially heated.

The side of the new hatchback Mini Cooper S 5D 2018-2019 has received significant differences. In particular, as mentioned, now the new car is designed for 5 doors, two on each side and one behind (trunk lid). Another nuance is that there are frames around the side windows, front and rear doors. Previously, there were no frames, due to uselessness, and the entire load fell on the roof and body pillars. The characteristic color of the pillars around the perimeter of the Mini Cooper S 2018-2019 remained unchanged, as before it is black, optionally for an additional fee, the buyer can choose an individual color, although in most cases black is still suitable.

The door glass of the new Mini Cooper S 2018-2019 heftback turned out to be rougher, one might even say square. The lower part of the glass along the perimeter of the 5-door was emphasized with a chrome edging, which was previously only optional. The manufacturer did not touch the door handles of the new charged car, leaving them the same as before and simply copying them to the back door. The side mirrors of the new Mini Cooper S 5D 2018 attract special attention; at the request of the buyer, the reverse side of the mirrors can be painted black or white, or you can leave the standard color to match the body color.

The mounting leg of the mirrors is painted black, according to the standard, the set of mirrors includes an electric adjustment drive, heating and automatic folding. Whether there will be a memory function for several settings, the manufacturer has not yet specified. Otherwise, the side part for the charged five-door Mini Cooper S 2018-2019 and the regular version will be the same.

The body color of the Mini Cooper S 5D 2019 is still bright:

  • olive;
  • beige;
  • dark grey;
  • orange;
  • red;
  • silver;
  • grey;
  • black;
  • green;
  • blue;
  • blue;
  • Navy blue.
It should be borne in mind that black lines will not be available on black, just like white on beige. The same color situation will apply to the roof and side mirrors of the Mini Cooper S 5D 2019.

The back of the new Mini Cooper S 5D 2019 hatchback turned out to be more interesting. The designers finalized the hatchback feet by making LED elements in the shape of half the British flag. Depending on the configuration, there will be black or chrome trim around the feet. As for the trunk lid, a small sports spoiler with LED stop repeater adorns the upper part as standard. The glass of the trunk was tilted more than in the usual three-door Mini Cooper S, but the dimensions of the lower part of the trunk became a little smaller.

The recess for the license plates of the Mini Cooper S 5D 2018 looks pretty good, rectangular with rounded corners. The upper part can be decorated with a black or chrome insert with the company logo, a rear-view camera and license plate lights are also located here. The minus that fans of the model noted is the same step in the luggage compartment, which is not so convenient when loading bulky items. Like the front, the distinguishing feature of the charged Mini Cooper S 2018 from the usual hatchback is the bumper. Mesh inserts were placed in two levels, the top two were placed on the sides, but the bottom two were in the center. Here, in the center, there are two tips for the exhaust system of the Mini Cooper S 5D 2018 and two LED fog lights.

The last element in the appearance of the new 2018-2019 Mini Cooper S 5-door hatchback is, of course, the roof. As already mentioned, the choice of the buyer is available in three options for the color of the roof: white, black or the same color as the body. Naturally, the exception will be the black color with the general black color and the white color of the roof in the case of the beige color of the Mini Cooper S 2019. In most cases, the roof of a charged 5-door is solid, but in the top configuration for a fee you can add a panorama, like those what's in Clubman or Countryman. The very back of the roof is decorated with a small antenna in the form of a shark fin, a kind of mini fin.

As before in the three-door, the buyer of the new Mini Cooper S 5D 2018-2019 is not limited in the choice of additional options, except for the standard options. According to the manufacturer, the new five-door Mini Cooper S 5D 2019 is waiting for an order of magnitude greater demand than the classic three-door. A similar situation was with the main competitor Audi A1, after the release of a 5-door hatchback, but now in the near future the German manufacturer plans to completely remove the 3-door from the assembly line. In terms of design, the new Mini Cooper S 5D 2018-2019 inherited the recognizable features of the earlier model, only some exterior details have been updated.

The interior of the new Mini Cooper S 5D 2018-2019

In the exterior of the 5-door charged hatchback, the changes are clearly visible, but in the cabin, practically nothing has changed. All the same round shapes, the same trim and design details. A characteristic style can be found only in this car, most of the interior elements are round, with fairly large numbers. The central part of the Mini Cooper S 5D 2018 panel is occupied by a small 6.5 "touchscreen display of the multimedia system. The system works on Apple CarPlay, but it is not yet known whether Android Auto will be available. In order not to deviate from the traditional style, the panel above and below the display was made in a round shape, in addition, the contour of the shape is made on the basis of LED lighting, at the request of the owner, the backlight can change color.Similar lighting is installed around the perimeter of the interior of the Mini Cooper S 5D 2019.

Moving down the center panel of the Mini Cooper S is a climate control panel with three selectors, a small panel with buttons for heated front seats, side mirrors, and a couple of other security systems. Most of all, the last panel, made in the form of toggle switches, catches the eye, it houses the Start / Stop button of the Mini Cooper S 5D 2018 engine, control of security and comfort systems. Finishing the center of the console is a small set of USB, 12V and Qi wireless charging, hidden behind a decorative cover.

Like the front console, many of the interior details of the 2019 Mini Cooper S are round. The central tunnel between the front seats is no exception, from its semi-circular shape to the cup holder for the second row of seats. The hatchback tunnel begins with two round cup holders and a gear lever. To save space, but maximize the functionality, a button panel was made around the gear lever of the Mini Cooper S 5D to select the travel mode. A little further on, a multimedia control panel and a selector are added. The hatchback handbrake in most variants of the Mini Cooper S 5D 2019 will be mechanical due to security measures, and an electromechanical one can optionally be added.

The second row of seats of the Mini Cooper S 5D 2019 had the most inconvenience. Although the manufacturer notes that three passengers can sit there, in fact only two, but the third one will be very awkward. The central tunnel ends on the second row, with a large round cup holder in the middle. Thus, the average passenger, when landing in the Mini Cooper S 5D 2018, constantly needs to be careful, or after a while the cup holder will completely suffocate.

Despite such a hyped and solid brand, the seats of the new 5-door hatchback Mini Cooper S 2018 will depend on the chosen configuration. By standard, the front seats are sporty, with a high back and good lateral support. The second row of seats in the Mini Cooper S 5D 2019, as already mentioned, is designed to fit 3 passengers, the folding ratio is standard 60/40. This is evidenced by the three rear seat head restraints.

As a material for trimming the interior of the Mini Cooper S 5D 2018-2019, the manufacturer offers high-quality fabric, leather, as well as a combination of leather and fabric. Fabric upholstery is presented in black shades with different patterns, as for leather upholstery, the buyer is offered:

  1. black;
  2. black with perforated inserts;
  3. white;
  4. dark brown;
  5. brown;
  6. beige.
For a fee, the buyer can choose the shade of the interior to his taste, while the top of the panel is painted black, and the bottom will be in accordance with the selected shade. Despite the small dimensions of the Mini Cooper S 5D 2019 hatchback, there is enough space in the cabin for both front and rear passengers.

Small changes occurred in the driver's seat of the new 5-door hatchback Mini Cooper S 5D 2019. The instrument panel remained the same, a large round speedometer, a small tachometer peeks out to the left of it, and a pair of sensors, fuel level and engine temperature, to the right. Unlike previous models, the new 2019 Mini Cooper S hatchback received a small head-up display that hides behind the instrument panel at unnecessary times. It displays information about the state of the engine, speed and part of the navigation system.

The steering wheel of the Mini Cooper S 5D has also undergone a change, with a sportier design, some models with a flattened bottom. The side knitting needles are normally occupied by functional buttons, and the lower knitting needle is more decorative. Only leather is used as a skin, soft plastic is not provided. As for the adjustment of the steering wheel of the Mini Cooper S, vertical and horizontal adjustment is available.

The interior of the new 5-door Mini Cooper S 2019 received practically no changes, but in terms of build quality and spaciousness it has not become worse. The manufacturer took into account many wishes regarding a charged three-door, introducing them into the new Mini Cooper S 5D 2018. They promise that with a measure of production growth, the optional list will expand, thereby offering more and more interior design options.

The history of the formation of the Cooper name began in the late 40s, when John Cooper registered the Cooper Car Company, where he began the production of compact racing cars. One of his developments - the Cooper 500 - opened the way to racing for many athletes.

In the early 60s, the son of John Cooper - Mike Cooper, and part-time owner of a tuning studio named after his father, decided to create a sports car based on a compact Mini. As a result, in September 1961, the Cooper model debuted, which was yet to become legendary. Conceived as an inexpensive and economical vehicle, the Mini has suddenly become a purebred racing driver. Mini Cooper has become a real "sports car for ordinary people." The reaction of consumers resembled euphoria. Potential buyers wanted even more power. The consequence of this was an increase in engine displacement from 848 to 1071 cm³, power increased to 70 hp, speed - 160 km / h. Taking care of the safety of passengers, John Cooper supplied the car with disc brakes. In 1962, an automatic transmission was included in the list of equipment, which had four gears for moving forward. By comparison, many luxury cars at the time tended to only have three of these gears.

The first generation Mini Cooper was produced for exactly 10 years, from 1961 to 1971, and then was dropped from the production program and replaced by a 59-horsepower 1.3-liter model with the designation Mini 1275 GT. However, the demand for the Cooper was still so strong around the world that John Cooper had to create an upgrade kit that was extremely popular. Sensing the rich opportunities in this market segment, the Rover Group (temporarily responsible for the MINI brand) in 1990 resumes production of the Mini Cooper.

In 1994, the Rover company came under the control of the BMW Group. The Germans have long been hatching plans to start producing small, but prestigious, "luxury" cars, so the Mini brand came in handy for them. The success of the second-generation Mini was based on the seamless combination of eye-catching retrospective design and cutting-edge engineering for which BMW is renowned. Although the car was justifiably criticized for ergonomic flaws and a level of comfort that did not quite match the price.

In October 2000, Issigonis' "classic" Mini designs were discontinued. Indeed, at the Paris Motor Show of the same year, the world premiere of a completely new car with the same name took place, the production of which began at the same plant in Oxford. And the sale of the third generation Cooper appeared in the spring of 2001.

The modern remake of the iconic model of the 60s and 70s was a success. The developers managed the main thing: to preserve the individuality of the Mini and at the same time make it meet modern requirements for capacity and safety. BMW designers carried out a very successful facelift, which did not violate the beloved and easily recognizable appearance of the car. The Cooper III is a full-fledged four-seater, front-wheel drive, 2-door, transverse petrol engine that embodies the features of a modern urban lifestyle, fully meeting the expectations of the buyer of the new millennium and, of course, following the trends of automotive fashion.

The car was developed by a group of engineers and designers led by Frank Stephenson on a completely original front-wheel drive platform. A feature of its design is a very rigid load-bearing body (about 24,000 N/deg), a McPherson-type front suspension on A-arms and a rear multi-link suspension with a passive steering mechanism, which, together with the wheels spaced apart at the corners of the body, provides excellent handling and vehicle stability on high driving speeds.

The third generation Cooper has become longer by 70 mm and, contrary to the current trend, slightly lost weight, although it was not possible to fall below 1200 kg. The hood has been raised by 20 mm and now there is an 80 mm gap between it and the engine - this is dictated by European safety requirements for pedestrians. Huge headlights and taillights received decorative chrome rims. During the transformation, Cooper lost one of its "highlights" - the glazing covering the rear pillars.

In the cabin, the central position is still occupied by a speedometer that has increased in diameter, containing an audio control panel and an on-board computer keyboard. Smaller circles are dispersed throughout the interior - a tachometer, ventilation deflectors, speakers, door handles. Even the key inserted into the mask under the engine start button is round. The trunk is small - only 165 liters (760 liters - with the rear seats folded down).

Under the hood, a 1.6-liter engine with a capacity of 115 hp. an engine that allows a car with a manual gearbox to reach 200 km / h and accelerate from standstill to “hundreds” in 9.1 seconds.

The safety of the Cooper III is at the highest level. Heavy-duty bodywork, airbags, a reliable braking system, side impact protection and a whole range of other safety features and solutions have made it possible to obtain extremely high crash test scores.

In 2004, the exterior of the Cooper was upgraded. From the base model Mini One, the car began to differ in the form of a chrome grille, a front bumper with built-in standard fog lamps, a two-tone color where the roof panel and exterior mirror housings are white, black or in body color and a chrome-plated exhaust pipe tip. By the way, at the request of the buyer, two characteristic white stripes can be drawn along the body - the Cooper brand name.

Since 2004, a front-wheel drive four-seat Cooper convertible has been produced on the basis of the hatchback, which debuted at the Geneva Motor Show. The soft top of this car can be easily folded electrically by pressing the corresponding button in just 15 seconds. The rear window is heated, the windows are lowered and raised automatically when the awning is folded / raised. The safety of the Mini Convertible is ensured by additional power protection of the body, steel pipes built into the windshield frame and rear safety arcs. Since the Cabrio modification is 100 kg heavier than the hatchback, its dynamic qualities are slightly worse, and fuel consumption is slightly higher. Despite this, as well as the higher cost, stylish convertibles are a huge success in many countries, including Russia.

Since 2005 this model has been available in Seven, Park Lane and Checkmate versions. By order, instead of 16-inch wheels, 17-inch wheels are installed on the Cooper. The updated interior of the Cooper includes a sporty 3-spoke steering wheel, a speedometer directly on the steering column, new seats and a number of other interesting options, such as four variants of the central instrument cluster.

In 2007, the updated Mini Cooper appeared. Significant changes have taken place under the hood. Mini received a brand new 1.6-liter engine with 120 hp, created in cooperation with Peugeot-Citroёn. By the way, the engine is equipped with a Valvetronic system that optimizes power and torque. The car is offered with a 6-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed "automatic". The switches located on a wheel — additional equipment.

On the updated Cooper, the steering is fully electric, it has replaced the electro-hydraulic. Turning the key is a thing of the past - now the engine starts and stops with a light press of the start / stop button. More than 60 options and a huge number of accessories allow you to give your Cooper even more individuality. From sports seats and chrome trim to joystick navigation, there's something for everyone.

The Mini brand has long been a cult brand. The car was not neglected by members of the royal family, the Beatles, Charles Aznavour, Belmondo, Enzo Ferrari and many others drove the Mini ... Cooper is the style of your movement.

Actually, MINI is an English brand. And with a fairly rich past. But today, MINI and its highly popular Cooper model are produced under the auspices of BMW.

It all started back in 1959, when the appearance of the first model of the MINI class caused almost a sensation. At this time, the appearance of a small and economical car could satisfy the massive demands of consumers. Time passed, expensive and prestigious brands appeared, but these cars did not lose their popularity due to their exceptional cheapness. The Austin Rover concern used this and produced cars, although not in very large, but quite sufficient quantities. However, profits were tight.

Then BMW came to the rescue. They decided that the MINI brand is a name that brought and is still able to bring a solid profit, and they took up this project.

The revival of the legendary model began with a wide discussion in the British press. The living creators of the first MINI also participated, in particular, the developer of the original Hydrolastic hydropneumatic suspension, Alex Moulton, and the creator of the “charged” rally car, John Cooper.

In 1997, the avant-garde concept cars "Spiritual" and "Spiritual Too" were shown one after another, as well as the ACV 30 ("Anniversary Concept Vehicle") - a kind of memory of the victory of the "MINI Cooper" in the 1967 Monte Carlo Rally of the year. However, all of them did not receive approval from the new owner of the BMW brand.

The chief designer, American Frank Stephenson, said: "This car is a piece of history, and our task is to transfer its emotional charge to the technological level of the future." Despite certain reminiscences, the new MINI cannot be called a car in retro style, the designer is convinced .
