The sixth-generation used Camry in the V40 body is in stable demand: solid, moderately comfortable, structurally simple and reliable. The latter is confirmed in car services. For this, the Camry is hated there. Mechanics shrug their shoulders - as a rule, the owners come only for regular maintenance. However, this does not mean that you can take the first car that comes across with your eyes closed.

"Six" or "four"?

The sixth generation Camry was sold from 2006 to 2011. Restyling of 2009, although it was cosmetic, but some design flaws in Toyota eliminated. And since March 2008, dealers began to receive cars exclusively from a plant near St. Petersburg. By the way, the production established in Russia did not affect the quality.

Unlike Japan or the USA, we can mainly find two versions: with a 2.4-liter engine (167 hp) and a 3.5-liter (277 hp). Although there is still a hybrid on the market, it is from the exotic category. Officially, such "Camry" was not supplied.

Both motors are with aluminum cylinder blocks. The units are reputed to be reliable, but their overhaul, as a rule, is not carried out in services. On average, engines with normal maintenance last from 350 to 500 thousand kilometers. In both cases, the timing drive has a chain that usually does not bother with extraneous sounds up to 200-250 thousand. So when choosing a car with solid mileage, you should listen to the operation of the motor. After all, spare parts alone for replacing the timing chain (including tensioners, guides, trims, etc.) will cost about 25 thousand rubles. Plus, work for another 10,000. For clarity, we take average prices in specialized technical centers in Moscow - in a semi-underground garage, of course, it will turn out cheaper, from official dealers - more expensive.

Versions with a 2.4 liter engine are more popular. There are about twice as many of them in the secondary market, also due to the heavy tax burden on the V6. The low demand for a top-end engine is also due to the fact that the "fortieth" "Camry" with its wadded brakes, uninformative steering wheel and super-soft suspension does not really need a powerful atmospheric "six". Plus, it's greedy. And the younger motor is enough for a comfortable ride.

Some owners of pre-styling cars with V6 came to the service in connection with quick oil drain. The rubber connecting tube of the oil line is to blame. For someone, it burst even before 50 thousand mileage. The emergency pressure light came on with all the consequences in the literal and figurative sense of the word. If you come across a pre-styling car with factory tubes, it is better to replace them with completely metal ones. The price of the issue together with the work is 7-9 thousand rubles.

The younger motor 2.4 has its own unpleasant features. So, it is subject to thermal shock. Even a short overheating will cause the aluminum cylinder head, as they say, to "get up a house." Therefore, the temperature and level of antifreeze must be monitored. And it's not just reinsurance. The engine is characterized by smudges of the cooling system pump - it was changed under warranty. Work on average costs 3,000 rubles, and the water pump itself costs from 3,000 to 9,000 rubles. To protect yourself from overheating, it is also recommended to clean the radiator more often. The fan starts to work, practically without stopping? So it's time. If the radiator itself ordered to live for a long time, the replacement will cost a pretty penny. Prices range from 8,000 to 24,000 rubles.

Like the “big brother”, on 2.4 liter engines with runs under 100 thousand, the problem of oil consumption may arise - from one to two liters per 10 thousand. But for other reasons. By this time, the piston rings are usually coked. Their replacement, together with valve stem seals, costs about 30,000 rubles. By this time it is usually time to change the engine mounts. The part costs at least 4,000 rubles, the original is exactly twice as expensive.

Of the common faults, we note the short life of oxygen sensors (6000-10000 rubles). Sometimes the owners of both modifications of the Camry complain about problems with starting the engine. There may be several reasons. The first is the fuel system pressure regulator, which ordered to live for a long time, costing an average of 7,500 rubles. It happens that the engine does not start at all, the fuel pump does not turn on and at the same time the computer does not give any errors. The reason for this is the water that gets under the fuse box due to design features. To prevent trouble, it is better to treat the wires with a water-repellent lubricant.

Not for sports

Three gearboxes were installed on the fortieth Camry. Five-speed mechanics relies only on the 2.4 engine. For quite a long time, it does not remind of itself, but after 60 thousand kilometers, drivers sometimes begin to have difficulty shifting gears. An alarm bell indicates the need to change the clutch disc (7000-11000 rubles).

Five-speed automatics don't usually have major problems, and a six-speed automatic that only pairs with a V6 can turn up some surprises. On average, her the resource is approximately 150,000 km. To prolong life, mechanics advise more often - preferably once every 50 thousand - to change the oil with a filter, and fill in only the original (ATF-WS). The main drawback is that the machine is not designed for such a herd of "horses" under the hood. And if you are used to driving, as they say, “slippers on the floor”, then the happy story of your Camry at first will surely end in an expensive repair. "Racing" leads to rapid wear of the clutches, overheating of the oil ... When overhauling mechanics, they almost always sentence the torque converter. Restoration will cost at best 80 thousand rubles, and most likely more than a hundred.

The design of the suspension as a whole does not cause headaches, but work “on the little things” after 50 thousand runs, as a rule, is enough. Most often you have to change the bushings and stabilizer struts - 500 and 2500 rubles. The most expensive parts, including shock absorbers, usually live for a long time - up to 150-200 thousand km. However, there are nuances in the suspension design that should be taken into account when diagnosing the selected machine. To replace the lower arm of the front suspension, you need to hang out the engine - as a result, after a seemingly ordinary procedure, the wallet will empty by 17-22 thousand rubles. By the way, if you prefer exclusively original spare parts, you should know that levers are sold only as an assembly for an average of 7,000 rubles.

Finally, when turning the steering wheel, it is worth straining your hearing. A clearly perceptible knock indicates a malfunction of the steering shaft. Some managed to change it under warranty even at a run of 70-80 thousand. Latecomers will have to pay about 10 thousand rubles for work along with the shaft itself. But a new non-original cross at the price of 1000 rubles can save. Still sometimes the power steering starts to howl - it's time to see if there are fluid leaks. In most cases, at the end of the first "hundredth" it is necessary to change high-pressure hoses or seals. And this is another 5000-6000 rubles.

By the way, the owners of American-made Camry faced a very unpleasant effect of "sticking" the gas pedal. Toyota on this occasion arranged a review twice - it changed the mats and the pedal itself, which can now be bought for 7000-10000 rubles.

Internal discomfort

The weak point of the Camry is the paintwork. Thin layer scratches easily and after numerous washes, the body does not look so attractive anymore. But traces of rust are not visible even on ten-year-old specimens.

Quite unexpected, but often occurring problems with air conditioning and climate control can spoil the comfort in the cabin. It is advisable to clean the system once a year. And the most common trouble is an oxidizing air conditioner evaporator. "Ashes" on the front panel of some "Camry" settled after 30,000-40,000 km. Dealers recognized the case as a warranty. If we compare these figures with the version of the car on the machine, then the advantage remains with the car with a manual transmission. Dynamic indicators are 2.5 - 3.5 seconds in favor of the "handle". The automatic machine, on the other hand, loses the race for dynamics, but has other advantages, such as comfort - after all, a driver who owns a car with automatic transmission no longer needs to constantly shift gears and squeeze the clutch in traffic jams and at traffic lights.

Consumption figures again show the advantage of a manual transmission over an automatic transmission. For Camry 40 with the following internal combustion engines, fuel consumption indicators are:

  • engine 2.0 (145 hp) in manual transmission, consumes ~ 7.8 - 8.1 liters of fuel per 100 km in a combined cycle, against an automatic transmission with its 9 liters of fuel per 100 km in a combined cycle;
  • the 2.4 engine on a manual transmission consumes ~ 8.3l - 8.8l of fuel per 100km in the combined cycle, against a car with automatic transmission with its fuel consumption of almost 10 liters (9.7 - 9.9l) per 100km in the combined cycle.

The Toyota Camry of the XV55 generation is equipped, regardless of the engine, with an exclusively six-speed automatic transmission. The transmission has an Aisin U760E index, which is found on front-wheel drive Rav4, Avensis, Sienna, Lexus ES 350, including Camry.
