Almost all novice drivers, after graduating from a car school, do not know all the nuances of traffic. This is understandable, because in the preparation of these moments they pay very little attention. Of course, compared to normal driving, reverse is not used as often, but without it it is simply impossible to perform some maneuvers. This is, for example, parking or leaving the garage. According to the rules

If you follow the current Rules, driving in reverse gear on the carriageway is allowed. However, the driver is required to be as circumspect as possible and not create significant interference with others. Regarding the speed and duration of such a ride, the Rules say - for a short time and with a minimum speed. Quantitative characteristics are not given, so you can not be afraid of traffic police inspectors with cameras, but you should not drive a few blocks in reverse gear.

If behind or another car, it is recommended to give a sound signal to avoid collision. However, you will not be fined for its absence - this provision is advisory, not mandatory. Experts recommend turning on the alarm - although this is not in the Rules, the car will attract the attention of others even in the dark, and law enforcement officers will not have any claims against you.

Of course, reversing is prohibited on some sections of the road. Similarly, you cannot enter under the signs "Movement prohibited" and "Entry prohibited". In the first case, the driver will be punished with a fine of 500 rubles, and in the second, he will have to pay 10 times more and put himself at risk of deprivation of rights for 4-6 months. However, driving in reverse gear on a one-way road is not considered a violation and does not result in a penalty. But getting into the lane for urban route transport will lead to a fine of 1500-3000 rubles, depending on the scene.

The rules also prohibit such maneuvering in places where the driver is prohibited from turning the car - regardless of whether it is prescribed by a sign or markings. There is also a whole list of special sections of the road in which reversing is fraught with an accident. Among them it is worth noting:

  • Crosswalk;
  • Bridge, overpass, overpass;
  • moving;
  • Shuttle bus stop;
  • Tunnel;
  • Crossroads;
  • Motorway;
  • Places with visibility on both sides of no more than 100 meters.

Learning to make turns

The skill of driving in reverse involves skill. The main rule that you must remember is that the direction of movement does not change when driving backwards. This means that if you want to turn the car to the right, then the steering wheel must also be turned to the right, and vice versa. This principle is the same for driving forward and in reverse.

Learn to determine the minimum radius of the rear wheels when turning the car ninety degrees. Practice on terrain with any soft surface (such as sand). Stop the car, get out and mark the center of your rear wheel (on the side you plan to turn on). After that, sit in the car, turn on the reverse gear and turn the steering wheel all the way. Start moving slowly until the car turns ninety degrees.

Then stop the car and get out of it again. Determine the turning radius by eye and put something next to the last mark that will act as a stick (for example, a stick). Again and, looking in the mirror, start turning. Do it as slowly as possible. Turn around until you see your pole in the side mirror.

Before you start learning to ride in reverse, select yourself. We do not recommend that you train in busy places, because due to inexperience you can provoke an emergency. It happens that newcomers, when honing their skills, touch lampposts or neighboring cars. But the worst case scenario is a collision with one of the pedestrians. Therefore, choose the most deserted place.

Don't trust mirrors

We advise you wholeheartedly not to trust the mirrors of your car. They are just a source of additional information about what is happening in the immediate vicinity of the car. Their visibility is quite limited. If another car or pedestrian moves on the side, it will be quite difficult to see them in the mirrors.

Therefore, combine in reverse. Use not only mirrors, but also your own vision, turning halfway back and observing the situation over your right shoulder. Only in this way you can get the maximum overview. Some novice drivers find this position uncomfortable to drive. However, this is not the case - after two or three workouts, you will see that it is optimal for reversing.

Minimum speed

That you can move backward only at minimum speed. Therefore, release the clutch pedal of the car until it starts to move. If you need to slightly increase the speed - release the pedal a little more, but not completely. If the car goes too fast, you will not be able to see what is happening on the road. As a rule, to reduce speed, it is enough to press the clutch a little harder or until it stops. If this is not enough - press the brake pedal. The speed of the car in reverse gear is approximately the same as the speed of driving in first gear.

Carrying out maneuvers when reversing, it is necessary to take into account the nuance that the front of the car takes out to the side. That is, if you turn to the right, the front wing will move to the left, and vice versa. Therefore, when maneuvering, it is very important to ensure that the moving part does not touch neighboring vehicles or other obstacles.

Beginners quite often make the mistake of dropping the clutch pedal at the end of the movement and not first disengaging the gear. As a result, the car begins to "roll" in the opposite direction. So you can crash into someone else's car, garage wall or curb. Watch out to avoid an emergency.

Advantages and disadvantages

If it is possible to use a forward move to carry out certain maneuvers, then it is better to do so, even if you have to perform a little more movement. Driving in reverse is much more dangerous, but it has its advantages:

  • higher maneuverability;
  • the possibility of parking from uncomfortable corners;
  • it is more convenient to control the distance to neighboring machines if there is not enough space on the site.

We recommend unfastening the seat belt while moving backwards. Also, turn on the appropriate turn signals when manoeuvring. If you are reversing in difficult conditions (for example, tight parking, busy traffic or poor visibility), then you should turn on the emergency gang. Then other road users will pay attention to your maneuvers and it will be easier for you to leave.

1. You should always try to watch where you are going - there is nothing fun in falling, crashing back into some grandmother. Therefore, immediately try to get into the habit of looking over your shoulder when you drive in reverse.

2. In order to feel more confident and stable, put one foot slightly in front of the other (at least half a shoe)

3. Do not keep your legs straight, but slightly bend them at the knees - it will be easier for you to maintain balance.

Exercise "Hourglass"

The pattern left by your rollers when performing such a movement should resemble the shape of an hourglass, i.e. legs diverge to the sides, converge back and diverge again.

Start the movement from the position of the legs together, the heels are directed slightly to the sides, and the socks touch each other.

Slightly bending your knees at the narrowest point of the hourglass, begin to "push" the rollers in the direction of travel, straightening your legs. The speed is gained precisely due to this "pushing out". To make it easier to maneuver, describing the desired arcs with the rollers, slightly transfer the weight to the front wheels of the rollers.

When everything starts to turn out easily and freely, you can move on to a more complex method - the "eight".

As you may have guessed, with this movement, the pattern that your skates draw on the pavement should resemble a figure eight.

Place one foot in front, the other behind, there should be a small distance between the toe of the rear skate and the heel of the front skate. Slightly bend your legs, distribute the weight evenly between the front and back legs.

Start by doing a variation of the "Hourglass" exercise - try to keep one leg in the "narrow" place of the "clock" in front, the other in the back, and the distance between them is maintained. When it starts to turn out - just continue moving so that the paths of the rollers intersect. Ideally, when moving in a figure eight, you should go around the chips on the slalom track.

If the "eight" still seems too complicated for you - you can limit yourself to the execution "half eight". Of course, you can’t bypass the chips on the slalom track in this way, but this movement is much simpler and looks quite decent :-)

In fact, with this method of movement, one leg moves almost in a straight line, and the second makes a figure eight.

An inexperienced driver should not rely solely on the rear-view mirrors when reversing. Recently, it has become popular to install in the car interior, curved mirror, it is specially designed so that an experienced driver can more easily assess the situation behind. But with a beginner, such a mirror can play a cruel joke, since the display in such a device is slightly distorted.

In such a mirror it is difficult to recognize how close an obstacle is. In this situation, it is best to act like most motorists. It must be remembered that no matter what brand the car is and whatever its characteristics, its maneuverability in reverse will always be higher than in front. How to park properly

In the future, you will have to drive the car into fairly narrow openings, but for the duration of the training, you need to select parking lots with a sufficient supply of space.

Many novice motorists mistakenly believe that it is very difficult to park a car using the rear drive due to many nuances and therefore, it is more reasonable to park in the forward direction. But when a beginner in real life tries to park the car several times using the forward gear, he quickly realizes how much he was mistaken.

What is wrong with parking a car in front of it in constant use? As mentioned above, the rear wheels of a car react much more sharply when turning the steering wheel than the front wheels. From this it follows that reverse parking is much more maneuverable than conventional parking.

In order to properly park the car, use the step-by-step instructions:

  • find a parking spot with sufficient space;
  • we stand close to the parking place in such a way that 20 centimeters separate you from a nearby car;
  • we drive up to the car that is in front, then we align the position of our car so that the bumpers are on the same level with the car next to it;
  • we go into reverse. Hold the steering wheel. We need to carefully monitor the angle at which we will enter the turn. You need to back up until the rear wheel of our car is on the same level with the bumper of the car that is parked in front;

  • turn the steering wheel to the maximum. If the correct angle of entry into the turn is observed, it is impossible to hook a nearby car. This is a fairly simple task - when you turn the steering wheel, the car will move in the right direction;
  • moving backwards, turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction in order to align the movement of the car.

Once you get the hang of backing up and driving forward again, most of your attention will be freed up (because going forward is much easier). This freed up part of the attention can easily be transferred to monitoring the traffic situation, which will significantly increase your safety. At the same time, the process of driving a car (pressing the pedals and turning the steering wheel) will be brought to automatism.

Secondly, when moving forward in a car, you need to be able to use rear-view mirrors both when changing lanes to the left or right, and simply to review the mirrors every three to five seconds in order to understand what is happening behind the car. Very often, when it's time to learn to reverse, people say, "Oh no... I'll never be able to do this, it's very difficult!" In fact, there is nothing complicated about this. You just need to deal with the main problems that a person faces on the way to mastering the movement in reverse.

The first thing to remember when backing up is that when the car is moving backwards, its rear axle is going first. Therefore, all movements in reverse must be performed with the thought of the rear axle of the machine. Very often there is confusion with where to turn the steering wheel in order to achieve this or that reaction - to the left or to the right. Imagine that we are looking at the car from above and see its wheels (Fig. 2.74). Now let's analyze in which direction the car will move in reverse if we turn the steering wheel to the right. Of course, with this position of the steering wheels, the front of the car will initially go to the left, but if we immediately think about the rear axle, then it will naturally go to the right. Therefore, the rule can be stated as follows: "Wherever I want, I turn there." That is, I want to go to the right - I turn the steering wheel to the right, I want to go to the left - I turn to the left. At the same time, at the first stage of training, you can not even pay attention to what happens to the front axle of the car.

Very often, before driving, the driver does not know what position the steered wheels of his car are in, and the position of the steering wheel cannot help him at all. Many for this purpose open the door and look out or even get out of the car to look at the wheels. Probably, this method has the right to life, but from the point of view of saving time and adequate impact on the car in real traffic conditions, this is wrong. Therefore, in order to understand what position the wheels are in, you need to use the image in the windshield. If the front wheels of the car were straight, then when moving backward, objects in front of the windshield will simply begin to be removed. In order to notice this, it is enough to drive 15-20 centimeters back. If the wheels of the car were turned to one of the sides, then when moving back, the car will move in an arc and the image in the windshield will go in the direction where the wheels are directed at that time (Fig. 2.75). Thus, if we imagine that the car is standing still, and the asphalt in front of it not only begins to move away from the windshield shelf, but also goes to the left or right, then the front wheels of the car at this time are also turned left or right, respectively. Moreover, if the wheels are turned all the way out, then the image in the windshield will begin to go in the corresponding direction very sharply.

When reversing, you need to understand that the car is not moving as usual - it reacts to turning the steering wheel with a clear delay. In other words, when driving backwards, after the driver turns the steering wheel in one direction or another, the car drives in a straight line for some time, and only then, remembering that it needs to turn, it starts to turn. And this is often misleading for a novice driver. In this regard, it is very useful to remember which trajectory the car will perform when turning the steering wheel at different angles (Fig. 2.76).

I generally recommend dividing the handlebar positions into three parts - full turn, full two-thirds turn, and a third turn. So, if the steering wheel turns from the central position to the stop in one and a half turns, then, accordingly, such positions will be at one and a half turns, at one full turn and at half a turn of the steering wheel. It turns out that if you turn the steering wheel all the way to the right, then the rear inner wheel for the turn (in this case, the rear right one) will outline a circle with a radius of two meters, and the outer wheel with a radius of two meters + the width of the car. In this case, the position of the car body relative to these circles will always be tangential - like sparks on a fireworks wheel. With two-thirds of the steering wheel eversion, the turning radius will be large, with one-third - even more, well, with straight wheels, the car will simply go straight back. It is very useful to remember such a grid of possible trajectories in order to know that if the steering wheel is turned so much, then the trajectory of the car will be such and such. After that, all that remains is to mentally apply a suitable trajectory from memory to the real traffic situation and turn the steering wheel as much as necessary to complete this maneuver.

When we drove forward, we said that having caught up with the middle pillar with an obstacle, you can turn the steering wheel, that is, the criterion for the possibility of turning forward was the passage of the middle pillar near the obstacle. The criterion for the possibility of turning when reversing is the passage of the rear bumper along the level of the obstacle. It is worth noting that the gap between the side of the car and the obstacle should not be less than 30-40 centimeters - this is a safe interval that can be very well controlled using rear-view mirrors.

In other words, if the obstacle on the training ground is a chip, then you need to catch up with it with the rear bumper and, if the chip is not closer than 30 centimeters from the car (Fig. 2.77), you can safely turn the steering wheel in its direction, that is, if the chip located, for example, on the left, then the steering wheel must also be turned to the left. After that, the car will describe a certain arc and go around this chip.

At the same time, it is important to understand that since the board that is inside the turn passes near the chip, we control this by looking in the rear-view mirror. However, do not forget that the whole car at this time unfolds like a fan, which means that you also need to control the outer diagonal, because if, for example, a left turn is made and a tree grows on the right, then a very unpleasant surprise will happen for the driver who did not pay attention to it's attention.

This mistake is made very often - when controlling an obstacle located inside the turn, people forget about controlling the outside of the car, although at that time a rather impressive radius is obtained there. In this regard, if you need to drive away from the wall in reverse, then when turning, for example, to the left (and the wall is on the right), you must take into account the swing of the car in the amount of at least one and a half meters - only in this case the car will not hit this wall (Fig. .2.78).

The logical question is what to do if there is no gap of 30-40 centimeters between the side of the car and the obstacle? What if the obstacle is very close to the car? In fact, there is nothing wrong with this. You need to understand that the instant center of the turn when reversing is the rear wheel inner to the turn. Accordingly, if the car lines up with the obstacle with the axle of the rear wheel, and the gap in this case is only five centimeters, then even in this case you can safely turn and the car will easily go around it.

How to determine from the driver's seat where the rear axle of the car is? Everything is very simple. If you look, turning around, inside the cabin, then the rear axle is located approximately under the headrests of the rear passengers. If you look in the outside rearview mirror, it's practically a tailgate handle. If you remember, when we discussed setting the exterior mirrors, we said that it is necessary to adjust the mirrors so that the rear door handles are visible in their lower corner. If you have a two-door car (for example, a sports coupe), then you need to find the appropriate landmarks in the form of, for example, protruding arches or something similar. Thus, if the car has caught up with the rear door handle (or other chosen reference point) with an obstacle, then even if the gap between the obstacle and the side of the car is five centimeters, you can safely turn the steering wheel towards the obstacle - the car will surely go around it (Fig. 2.79). It is very important to understand that the gap between the vehicle and the obstacle is the visible clearance across the entire height of the vehicle. It is not enough just to see an obstacle in the rearview mirror. It is necessary that there is a gap between this obstacle and the car - only in this case the car will be able to go around the obstacle.

And another important point to consider when driving the car back. Surely, if you have already tried to drive a car in reverse, you have noticed that it starts to go somehow very quickly. This is due to the design features of the reverse gear of a manual gearbox - it is always more powerful than the first gear, that is, the acceleration dynamics, all other things being equal, in the reverse gear is higher than in the first. That is why the car usually breaks back very powerfully, although at the same time we do all the same actions with the pedals.

In this regard, in order to move smoothly in reverse, you need to hold the clutch a centimeter or half a centimeter lower than if you were doing it for first gear.

As before, we raise the pedal and, feeling that we have raised it a little high, we press it again. However, if you raise the clutch pedal to the actuation point and then immediately press it back (not necessarily to the floor, but just to get it out of the actuation zone), without waiting for the car to react, then the car, having received a short impulse, will roll forward and begin to lose speed again; as soon as you feel that the speed starts to drop, you need to "push" the car again in the same way - by lifting and immediately pressing the pedal. By “pushing” the car over and over again with short impulses of the clutch, you can go in reverse for as long as you like, and at speeds of half a kilometer per hour or less.
