Design

The model was planned to be produced in two trim levels: Comfort (with 2.0 and 2.4 engines) and Lux ​​(2.4 liter engine). There were also plans to install a 2.7-liter. It was originally planned that 10,000 Volga Siber vehicles would be produced in 2008, and 45,000 in 2009. To be or not to be a legend? Such a truly Hamlet question was faced by the participants of the test drive of the new generation of Volga. No, now “Volga Siber”. We, perhaps, will no longer meet the usual Cyrillic spelling. It is naive to compare the old “Volgovskaya” base with a fairly modern car platform “Chrysler Sebring”, albeit the previous generation that replaced it. It's about something else - will the adherents of the classical model find in the novelty all those positive features that they have become accustomed to? Will old chronic deficiencies and “diseases” go away? To resolve all doubts, the organizers of the test drive laid a route through the traditional “habitats” of Volga buyers - both along Moscow avenues and small Russian towns.

... TAXI, called late in the evening after the test drive, by coincidence turned out to be the good old Volga GAZ -3110. Sitting on the back sofa, I involuntarily began to compare the familiar feeling of a familiar car with the debutant, behind the wheel of which I spent that day. Yes, the new “Volga Siber” can no longer be called a “barge”. Instead of an impressive domestic business sedan, we got a solid “middle peasant” family class. However, in “Siber” it is still quite spacious, this can be confirmed even by our photojournalist, who manages to prop up the ceiling of the editorial office with his head. He was quite comfortable both in the front seat and on the back sofa. In a word, there are no special problems for passengers. And yet, under a rather low Chrysler roof, you psychologically feel not as comfortable as under the volumetric dome of the former Volga.

I am a short person and can easily fit in almost any car, except for a children's pedal car. Therefore, it was not the slightest difficulty for me to get behind the wheel of the Volga Siber. Moreover, we were given cars for testing exclusively in the top modification “Lux”, the driver's seat of which is equipped with electric adjustments in ten directions. (There is also a servo drive in the database - but there are only six directions.) But a few days earlier, at the Moscow Motor Show, our colleague, a very large man, barely squeezed behind the wheel, even with the driver's seat completely retracted. But here it is not a matter of height, but, delicately speaking, in the non-standard proportions of a comrade. Belly ate the whole place up to the steering wheel. But for the passenger seat, servo adjustments are not provided at all. This is a typical American trait, because in the States a car is often bought to move only one person - so why spend money on unnecessary options? But the Volga is often driven with a personal driver, and passengers, especially nomenklatura workers, out of Russian habit, like to sit in the front seat. So, perhaps, electric drives would not interfere with them either.

An unpretentious key does not correspond to the “luxury” configuration.

Go ahead. It seems to be a luxury equipment, but the key is the most common - without a retractable “sting”, not to mention the “radio lock”. You have to open the door manually, and then press the central locking button from the passenger compartment so that the rest of the passengers can sit down. Not very convenient, especially for taxi drivers and hired drivers. The trunk opens with a button in the cabin and ... with a lever inside the luggage compartment itself. This solution has passed unchanged from American cars, because in the USA the ability to open the trunk from the inside is a mandatory requirement. At the same time, the volume of the trunk is inferior to the “Volgovsky”, 453 liters are placed in it. It is quite enough for family needs, but perhaps not for a taxi.

In the cabin of the old "Volga" there is a kind of old-fashioned comfort, like in a grandmother's bedroom. But supporters of healthy conservatism will not be disappointed with the current model either. I catch myself on a seditious thought, they say, it’s even good that a not-quite-new car served as the basis. From the lines of the “Volga Siber” salon, which are very far from modern trends, it blows with some kind of “old-mode” calmness and solidity. This shows up even in small things. Here is a simple American air conditioner regulator - the upper pictograms near the round handle are white, this is a simple airflow, the lower ones are blue - artificial cold. To the left are two of the same kruglyash - temperature and fan speed controls. Even a child will understand. And there are many such little things. The equipment of the car is very good.

Even in the "lower" configuration "Comfort" there are front airbags with several stages of inflation, outside rear-view mirrors with electric adjustment, heating and auto-dimming, six-way servo adjustment of the driver's seat, ISOFIX child seat mounts and so on. That's just the "smell of a new car" in the cabin is very peculiar. Pet lovers as one have stated that it smells like… dry cat food. Outside design can not be called a revelation. It clearly shows the features of the good old "Chrysler Sebring", albeit a little turned over. Its creators obviously saved money on sound insulation of the Volga Siber... But this, of course, is not the taxi in which I returned home, exploding on overtaking with a low roar with tin overtones. Most of all, the annoying rumble in the Siber cabin manifests itself at a typical city speed of about 60 km / h. Obviously, in such conditions there is a special resonance. According to subjective sensations, at 120 km / h the cabin is even quieter, but how often will you drive so fast? The front panel especially rattles - the quality of its plastic is far from ideal. Against the backdrop of a leather interior and other luxury details, this is a tangible minus. By the way, the panel plastic itself, although hard, like most “Americans”, is not so cheap in appearance.

As for overtaking, I don’t want to abuse them at all. I repeat, for the test we were given only the top configuration, equipped with an in-line 2.4-liter “four” with a capacity of 143 hp. paired with a four-speed automatic. Nevertheless, just like on the classic Volga, you won’t be able to drive the Siber either. Acceleration is quite sluggish. According to the documents, 13.4 s to “hundreds”, and according to the sensations - even more. When overtaking, if you press the gas pedal to the floor, a “kickdown” readily works, but the engine squeals in protest, which also does not add acoustic comfort, but acceleration is so-so. Although the automatic transmission is equipped with the “Autostick” function with the possibility of manual shifting, pushing it left and right also soon gets boring. This does not particularly improve the dynamics, and when the maximum speed is reached, the box switches “up” without permission. The most interesting thing is that the version with “mechanics” is faster for a couple of seconds, with a smaller engine size. And in terms of power, the two-liter version is inferior to the older model by only 2 hp. The difference in torque is also not so great - respectively 188 Nm at 4.350 rpm and 210 Nm at 4.200 rpm. Therefore, I can assume that it is the 2-liter modification “Siber” that will be in main demand among buyers due to better dynamics, lower fuel consumption and not so high prices.

... On straight and empty Moscow avenues, my taxi keeps its course unshakable, like an electric train. The old “Volga” knows how to keep straight. The new one too. Long country roads without overtaking and frequent rebuilding - this is her element. "Volga Siber" confidently goes forward and does not scour the sides even at a speed of 180 km/h and not even on the best asphalt. Nakarkal ... When leaving on a secondary road, the “not the best” coating turned into disgusting - with numerous potholes and pits. Here it is, “slalom in Russian”. Here, the old Volga, with its archaic steering and spring rear suspension, would not have been able to keep up with us. “Siber”, of course, is far from a sports car, but it cuts obstacles two orders of magnitude better than its predecessor. At least my breathing is even and my back is not wet, considering that I had to travel dozens of kilometers along the gullies.

The next section of the route ran along a dry but broken dirt road with many potholes and “waves”. At first, I conscientiously went around each hole, but soon laziness won out, and I ventured to go directly. In vain! The car started shaking like crazy. The suspension for such conditions turned out to be too flabby, and the clearance of 14 cm is clearly too small. The old “Volga” in these conditions would immediately win back all the lost points. So if the Gazites are counting on sales in our outback, they cannot do without further “Russification” of the suspension.

The release of this car was launched back in 2008 and lasted only a couple of years. Already in 2010, mass production was closed. Why? Siber can by no means be called an exclusively domestic car. The fact is that the equipment of the American Chrysler plant was bought by representatives of GAZ. Key changes affected only the front and rear bumpers, as well as optics, which were somewhat redesigned and improved.
