4. Measure the oil level and fill it up to the upper mark and wait 10 minutes for the oil to glass into the pan. It must be understood that the oil must be of high quality;

7. Start with a starter, while monitoring the oil level on the pressure gauge and pointer on the instrument panel. The first start of the engine after the overhaul may take longer than usual, but do not worry - this is filling the power system;

8. The instruments should show the oil level at around 3.5 - 4 kg / cm2, immediately after that, start warming up the engine at idle. It's okay if smoke came out from under the hood - it's just burnt oil that got into the engine, the smoke will soon pass;

9. After that, we start the radiator fan and wait until it works, then turn off the engine;

Then we wait until the engine cools down, up to 40 degrees (that is, it will be slightly hot or warm). After that, we start the engine warm-up cycle again. And so 10-15 times. After that, you can start running the engine at medium speeds. To do this, you need to start the car and increase the speed to 1000, about 3 or 4 minutes, then the same amount at 1500 rpm and 5 minutes at 2000 rpm. After that, you can start running on the go. You need to drive within 60-70 km per hour, avoiding high gears.

It is advisable to read the operating instructions for the machine, it contains all the speed modes available during the break-in. After a couple of kilometers, you can begin to adjust the speed. Running in the engine after repair should be accurate, do not heavily load the engine. Increase the load very carefully, and maximum load give after 10-15 thousand run. It is also worth mentioning the viscosity of the oil. During summer break-in, viscosity oil should be used: 15W -40 or 10W -40. In winter 10W -40 or 5W -30. The API motor oil classification system recommends the use of low-viscosity oils, supposedly they accelerate the running-in of parts, despite the fact that more viscous oils do not allow roughness of the upper layers of parts. Some manufacturers prohibit changing the oil at the initial break-in stage, as branded oils manufacturers contain a special additive package that accelerates the grinding of parts.

There may be a great many reasons when the engine does not start after a major overhaul. They are usually divided into two groups. The first is solved by diagnosing and re-parsing the engine, the second is solved by the forced supply of oil to the oil pump and subsequent pumping of fuel.

Running in the engine after overhaul can be cold. Cold running of the engine is the forced cranking of the crankshaft, cylinders, etc. in a forced mode with a given frequency and a certain time. Cold break-in eliminates the fact of damage to parts from a sharp change in cold temperature to hot, since the components after the overhaul of the motor heat up more than usual (everyone is familiar with physics - when heated, the metal expands and vice versa). With such a sharp change in thermal conditions, the gaps between the parts may increase or decrease, there will be hanging friction and excessive wear.

They use cold break-in at special stands of service stations, for some engines - their own stand. Typically, a cold run-in lasts about three hours. Craftsmen run the engine in the "cold way" with the help of electrical appliances, manually, by tow, etc. The right tool and equipment, as well as the subtleties of the procedure, only specialists know.

Running in a diesel engine is no different from running in a gasoline engine, but here are the basic conditions:

1. The period up to 10000km is the break-in period;

2. It is not allowed to sharply increase the speed;

3. Long-term increased speed (over 3,000 rpm) is not allowed;

4. It is not allowed to overload the car;

5. It is not allowed to start a "cold" engine, it is necessary; warm up for at least five to six minutes;

6. Running in a diesel engine, if a turbine is installed on it, does not allow the engine to stop immediately after a fast ride;

7. Oil and filter change after 2000 km run;

8. After the break-in, the engine is diagnosed;

When is a break-in necessary?

It is produced when they interfere with the motor:

  • minimal (camshaft or chain replacement). Then the engine is run in at a minimum - 500 km;

The problem in this situation may be that the new rings fit into the worn piston grooves. When the pistons are very “gotten” and the groove is badly broken, then there is a high probability that you will break the rings when you first start the engine.

In this case, the brokenness of the groove is assessed by visually looking at the old ring. When its lower surface is glossy and plays a little waviness in the sun, and when you run your finger over the surface you feel wear steps, then such pistons must be changed unambiguously.

Basically, the grooves in the pistons are spaced so that their bottom surface tilts down a little. Therefore, the old ring wears along its bearing surface at the same angle. The new ring will then begin to twist and, in most cases, break.

The fact is that piston wear can be determined precisely by the brokenness of the upper groove (compression). All other rings, except for the compression one, are almost not subject to wear.

Run-in secrets

With this procedure, carry out (after 800 km and 2000 km). Oil take 10W-30. There is also a more correct running-in.

  • drive at high speeds;
  • load the car with an excessive amount of cargo and passengers;
  • slow down sharply;
  • drive in low gears.

Rule number two is to watch your speed. When your car has not yet traveled 200-300 kilometers, you should not give gas to more than 80 km / h. At the same time, you must try to move with constant speed and don't switch to .

How to break in a diesel?

In order to carry out a high-quality running-in of a diesel engine after a major overhaul, it is necessary:

  • observe the break-in period, which lasts up to 10,000 runs and depends on how the overhaul itself was carried out;
  • do not allow during break-in sharp rises engine speed;
  • do not use for a long time increased speed(with 2000 runs no more than 2500 revolutions, and up to 10,000 runs no more than 3200 revolutions);

  • warm up the engine for at least five minutes after starting it;

You have made an overhaul of the engine of your car, and now you are faced with the task of correct operation during the lapping of new parts. In our article, we will tell you how to properly carry out this important process so that your engine can last as long as possible without breakdowns.

Lapping parts

Deviation from requirements proper break-in in a very short period of time, it can negate the overhaul of the engine, which is not a cheap pleasure. After the failed parts have been replaced in the engine (usually these are crankshaft liners, piston group rings, when boring the cylinder block - pistons, gears oil pump etc.), new ones must be adapted to their environment.

There is a grinding of the surfaces of friction pairs, and it is possible only on a running engine. The moment is indicative of the fact that in the engine oil appears a large number of smallest metal particles. These are roughnesses that are invisible to the ordinary eye, which were erased in friction pairs. Proper running-in allows these irregularities to be smoothed out and prevents friction pairs from quickly destroying each other.

As a result of proper running-in, the service life of rubbing parts is extended several times compared to those that have not been run-in.

Starting the Lapping Process

Proper running-in of the engine after overhaul begins with starting the engine and running it at idle. After 30-40 minutes, we strongly recommend changing oil filter on new.

After that, you can drive a car, strictly observing certain rules, which will be discussed below. As soon as the car passes the first 1000 km, we do a complete oil change in the engine. After another 1500-2000 km, the main break-in process can be considered completed, the oil and oil filter must be replaced with new ones.

Riding style

It is extremely important not to overload the engine after overhaul during the break-in.

Riding methods such as pull-in driving are contraindicated. With it, due to low revolutions, oil starvation engine, especially its upper part, where the camshaft is located. This increases wear and reduces the life of the engine. It is erroneous to think that "pull-in" driving saves fuel. There is no savings for the owner of such a nature of the ride.

Those who like to drive like this and have already done a major overhaul of the VAZ engine have become aware of the heavy wear of the fourth cylinder of the engine. Moreover, not only the piston wears out - the resource is also "eaten up" on the crankshaft. There is no point in talking about the camshaft at all - it is very difficult for him in these conditions. And if on Volga cars, driving "pull-in" does not have such catastrophic consequences, then such driving is contraindicated for the engine of cars of the VAZ family, and even more so when running in.

For the entire break-in period (2500-3000 km), you should have a calm driving style. The number of revolutions should not exceed 3 thousand. It is necessary to avoid lifting from steep slopes, slip in the mud and any other loads on the car - only a quiet ride.

When starting off, you should gently engage the clutch so that the load on the engine builds up smoothly, and not abruptly.

What should never be done when running

If your engine starts to overheat during break-in, do not turn it off under any circumstances. It is necessary to stop, turn on the interior heating to the maximum, turn off possible load(air conditioner), open the hood and achieve temperature equalization in this way.

After overhauling the engine and running it in, it is in no case recommended to tow another car, drive with a trailer, or overload your car. All these actions lead heavy loads on the engine, which means that they are unacceptable in any case.

It is also not recommended to use such a technique as engine braking during break-in. Of course, when emergency this rule can be ignored, but in normal operation, avoid this method of slowing down.

As you can see, running the engine after overhaul is, in fact, its logical conclusion.

Neglecting it important process will soon put you in front of the need to re-repair the engine.

Those who do not want to become a frequent visitor to car repair shops should follow all the requirements for a proper break-in.
