In terms of price-benefit ratio, this is the most competent "body kit" for the Duster.

Another useful little thing is an additional grid in the lattice. front bumper. She helped out - she protected the radiators from a stone flying out from under the truck. As a result, I limited myself to removing the bumper to replace the torn mesh, which cannot be compared with the replacement of the charge air cooler and the radiator of the cooling system. Although the radiator of the air conditioner still had to be changed ...

Problems with interior cooling appeared last summer: the compressor turned on, the system seemed to work, but the air entering the cabin was not cooled. Diagnostics in a specialized service revealed a lack of refrigerant in the system.

We did not find obvious fistulas, so we filled it with the addition of a fluorescent additive, which will later help find the leak.

The air conditioner worked without failures all summer, and this spring it became capricious. The fluorescent additive helped to quickly identify the leak location: the lower left side of the condenser turned yellow in the rays of an ultraviolet lamp. I assumed that one of its many tubes had rotted, but the plastic diffuser at the bottom of the bumper turned out to be the culprit. He moved off the mounting points and rubbed the condenser. The master, specializing in the maintenance and repair of air conditioners, noted that this is not an isolated case - this happens even on one-year-old cars.

The bumper must be removed to access the condenser. The replacement did not go smoothly - two M6 threaded bolts broke off, with which the bumper is attached to the subframe. If you do not want to drill broken bolts, during the next maintenance, spill the inner cavity of the subframe with anticorrosive. By the way, there are also captive nuts with M6 thread for fastening steel protection. power unit.

Protective vinyl film on headlights for two and a half years slightly clouded. I decided to clean it with a solvent - it will not be worse. Aggressive liquid restored the transparency of the film, it was not necessary to re-paste it.

Duster's main drawback is poor ergonomics driver's seat. Due to the almost horizontal and short seat cushion and the lack of reach adjustment of the steering column, I cannot find the optimal driving position. On a long journey, after a couple of hours, the legs begin to get tired. To reduce the load, I put an inflatable C‑shaped neck pillow under my hips.

A little reason to be nervous threw the engine. After changing the air filter, I felt an increased vibration. I found out that the brackets of the filter housing were bent and it began to touch valve cover engine. This is an inevitable process, because when replacing the air filter, you have to remove and put in place its body, and the brackets are thin - and gradually bend. The fault was quickly fixed: he bent the brackets with a mounting blade. Check, maybe your car has them deformed. With the engine running, pull the air filter housing up slightly - if the noise subsides, fold in the brackets.

At the 92nd thousand, Delphi specialists, whose fuel equipment is installed on the Duster, proposed to diagnose the pump high pressure without removing from the engine. It is undesirable to open the fuel system for prevention without special need, but not just anyone will take up the matter - and I agreed. The master from England conjured over the pump for a long time. It took more time to wash and clean the connections than to diagnose. As a result, the pump gave out 1180 bar - a worthy indicator. Cause for concern when the pressure is below 1100 bar. So the pump will still work. Thanks to a good diesel fuel: I did not save on fuel, I avoided gas stations at little-known gas stations.

Despite the solid mileage, all suspension and steering parts are native. But nothing lasts forever - the first bell sounded at the 92nd thousand: there was a faint knock from the front right when driving at low speeds. Inspection revealed play in the right steering tip. Didn't bother with a replacement. At the same time I stopped by to adjust the toe and camber. Along the way, the mechanic corrected the corners at the back: they slightly left the tolerance field. All the servicemen were tormented by one question: why don't I change the tips in pairs? I explain: not out of greed. I am opposed to changing serviceable parts for new ones without the need. In my practice, there are many examples when those sentenced to replacement worked flawlessly for years.

Duster goes to the second lap on the odometer. Although the finish line is already visible. Therefore, I summed up his life in our park, calculated the costs and compared with other editorial machines. So, while Duster fully complies with the definition of "budget": the cost per kilometer (4.15 rubles) will be envied even by many cars- what can we say about crossovers.

Having checked the Russified Renault Duster, which had just appeared, we concluded that it was quite reliable. Has this been confirmed by years of real operation?

Predicting the commendable corrosion resistance of the Duster body five years ago, we were not mistaken: the galvanization of all external panels and a generous layer of mastic on the bottom successfully cope with their duties even on the very first copies. Rust is in no hurry to settle even in the places of chips - which, however, start up with ease, especially at the ends of the hood and front fenders.

Door seals rub paint on thresholds

Ordinary acrylic paint is the most vulnerable, in addition, it becomes noticeably cloudy twice as fast as “metallized” paint - after a couple of years. By the way, the first corrosion should be looked for where the bar on the tailgate comes into contact with the paint. Take a look at the inner parts of the thresholds: side door seals are actively involved in such “sabotage”. Adds hassle and plastic: weakly holding front fairings (25 euros at a rate of 62 rubles per euro) roof rails at speed can disappear in an unknown direction, and peeling silver sills and both bumpers often changed already under warranty.

From sandblasting, as we expected, the protruding sidewalls in front of rear arches- it makes sense to protect them with an anti-gravel film, and replace the scanty front mudguards with larger ones.

And they were not mistaken with criticism of insufficient body rigidity: it happens that from strong distortions on off-road windshield cracks spread. And the copies of the first year of production, consider, without exception, were marked by bursting paint covering the mastic in the back of the joints of the roof with the sidewalls. Problem areas repainted under warranty, but stubborn cracks were not slow to reappear. In July 2012, to increase the rigidity of the structure, the length weld in the trunk opening they doubled, but this did not become a panacea for troubles - fortunately, the defect is purely cosmetic and does not lead to further devastation.

In order not to bring the matter to misfires and loss of coils (65 euros original and three times cheaper than analogues), it is better to put the nozzles on a sealant or replace them with three-jet ones from later versions. And if things still went to the extreme, do not hesitate to replace the elements of the ignition system: even signaling a malfunction with a lamp check engine engine electronics and does not think to turn off the nozzles in problematic cylinders, putting excess fuel at risk to the health of the converter (850 euros).

In addition to coils and candles, the culprit of problems with gasoline engines 1.6 and 2.0 for pre-styling Dusters most often becomes a position sensor crankshaft(55 euro branded and from 15 analogues). And remember that the situation with not really efficient system crankcase ventilation for both engines is burdened by too modest air filter. It is better to change it every 10 thousand kilometers, and when a field is discovered engine oil in the body of the receiver (the more driving at high speeds, the richer the deposits) - and more often. For both units, after 60-90 thousand kilometers, the thermostat may jam (15 euros), and on the side of the timing drive during cold starts, a creak and rattle may appear. You should not panic, because, as a rule, weak rollers of the attachment belt are screaming.

Both motors can fail elementary throttle body gaskets in three to five years - with leaky ones it is difficult to start in cold weather. And after a run of 60-80 thousand kilometers, other seals also fail - oil streaks appear at the junction and near the valve cover bolts.

The two-liter F4R engine, although the most popular (half of the cars on the market), is not the most successful. From younger brother K4M with a volume of 1.6 liters (with such a third of the cars), this unit, in particular, is distinguished by the presence of phase regulators (when restyling in 2015, it acquired one at the intake, increasing the output from 135 to 143 hp). And at the same time and problems with them! Couplings (150 euros each) sometimes do not withstand even 60-80 thousand kilometers. You need to check hot: "diesel" rattling notifies you of trouble only on a warm engine. Postponing repairs is risky: the wear products of the phase shifters will first clog the control valve, and then scatter throughout the entire lubrication system.

The weak point of the two-liter engine is the phase shifter clutch

More often at 2.0, the piston group also throws up surprises: after 140-170 thousand kilometers, due to the occurrence or wear of the rings, oil consumption can go off scale for three liters per ten thousand kilometers. And in general, the larger motor surprisingly turned out to be less durable: before overhaul with boring cast iron block cylinders usually withstand about 300 thousand kilometers against 350-400 thousand, which 1.6 is able to plow.

In 2015, the well-deserved unit of the K4M series, which has been registered on many Renault models since the 90s, gave way to the Nissan H4M engine (aka HR16DE) of Togliatti production with a volume of 1.6 liters. And this, too, is hardly a cause for special celebration. On the one hand, the phase shifters (at the intake) of this unit are more reliable than those of a two-liter one. But before the overhaul, the engine takes care of the same 300 thousand kilometers, and only a sleeve from craftsmen can save from buying a new aluminum cylinder block. Maintenance seems to be easier: there is no need to replace the toothed belt due to its absence in the timing chain drive, which does not require attention for years, and the electronic throttle is more slowly overgrown with deposits. But the valve clearances are not commanded by hydraulic compensators, like in the K4M, - the mechanism that starts to click every 80-100 thousand kilometers has to select pushers of a new thickness.

The slightly higher power of the H4M is offset by less resistance to overheating. Like its French counterparts, this unit does not always start up enthusiastically in cold weather, it likes to whistle with a generator belt drive. In addition, the sound picture is often enriched by the growl of the exhaust system with a destroyed gasket ring (35 euros) of the exhaust pipe, and nervous trembling after 100 thousand kilometers has to be appeased by replacing the torn pillow of the right support (110 euros).

Weaker versions of the turbodiesel have a "turbine" of constant geometry, the performance of which is controlled by a bypass valve. And the 109-horsepower modification has a variable geometry turbocharger

Nissan's one and a half liter K9K diesel engine, which made its debut in 2001, among others, makes the modest Duster related to cars ... Mercedes! And it is remarkable not only for this. For by the time it appeared on our Duster (with it 10% of cars) got rid of its main misfortune - wear connecting rod bearings after frivolous 100-150 thousand kilometers. Only oil starvation or absolutely unreasonable savings on the quality of oil, which is better to renew every 10 thousand kilometers, can bring reinforced liners (60 euros each) to cranking. By the way, this will also help not to retire the turbocharger (1000-1300 euros) before 150 thousand kilometers.

With simpler and more unpretentious injectors (300 euros each), but with a more demanding high-pressure pump (1200 euros), which can wear out after 120-170 thousand kilometers.

For any of the diesel engines, after 100-120 thousand kilometers, the EGR exhaust gas recirculation system can fail (250 euros for a new valve assembly), and a more powerful version burdened with a dual-mass flywheel with the same mileage may require its replacement (800 euros).

Not everything goes well with the clutch (150-200 euros) paired with any of the gearboxes - the six-speed TL8 and the five-speed JR5 for front-wheel drive versions. The lining of the driven disk lasts 130-160 thousand kilometers, but due to fatigue from increased loads (usually when conquering off-road) of leaf or damper springs, twitching can begin soon after 100 thousand kilometers.

The clutch slave cylinder, combined with release bearing(110 euros): often it has to be changed after a run of 50-70 thousand kilometers. And be careful when pumping: the reason for buying a new unit can easily be a fragile plastic pipe for the hydraulic line, on which the fitting is located.

Although in the early years, oil losses were so rapid that they were brought to warranty replacements for unsuccessfully assembled and jammed units. Simplicity and unpretentiousness match the electromagnetic multi-plate clutch for connecting the rear axle, sitting in front of the main gear. If it junk, it’s the fault of the control electrician: it’s easy to damage the wiring on the roads, and copies of the first two years of production could arbitrarily turn into purely front-wheel drive at the beginning of the movement or turn the steering wheel to extreme positions - the discipline was returned by the service campaign for “filling” the corrected control program.

It's amazing, but even the four-speed automatic transmission, known for its whims, behaves quite decently for the company. Neely DP0, and after modernization in 2013 called DP8 for all-wheel drive Dusters (and DP2 with front-wheel drive), the box in 2015 managed to survive service campaign to replace the oil distributor block and sealing rings. But the unit with a redesigned torque converter and ZF valve body, as well as with a more efficient enlarged heat exchanger and an additional oil cooling circuit, began to suffer less from its main trouble - overheating. And if you don’t skimp and officially change the “eternal” oil, the control hydraulics will last 100-150 thousand kilometers without repair, and the “iron” itself will last 250 thousand kilometers. But the box still doesn’t like the cold, so it’s better to spend time warming it up before the trip than prematurely fussing with replacing valves.


Even in frosts, CV joints stuck with thickened grease can crunch, but before 150-180 thousand kilometers they rarely wear out - which saves you from buying drives that go exclusively in assembly (400-480 euros each). And here cardan shaft it cannot boast of being trouble-free: the crosses (first the front) often begin to play without waiting for 100 thousand kilometers, and for specimens that often encounter off-road conditions twice as soon. Pulling with the repair is fraught: the shaft splitting will break neighboring bearings, and if the crosses are heavily worn, they may fall apart. The piquancy of the situation is that the cardan in spare parts is assembled with non-removable crosses and costs immodest by Duster standards 570 euros, and the only alternative that allows you to save twice as much is to find a service that can select and implement suitable crosses and balance the shaft.

In order not to suddenly be left without the help of a power steering in specimens older than four or five years, do not forget to keep an eye on its high pressure line (250 euros): it is often rubbed through at the point of attachment to the subframe. The design, by the way, is equally unsuccessful for both the hydraulic booster and the EGUR on diesel versions. And for specimens that saw the light before mid-2012, keep an eye on the handbrake cables: their own mounting brackets have torn through the shell through and through for several years.

And yet in general chassis It turned out even stronger than we thought! And the prices for original parts are not sad: they are sometimes lower than for analogues. To break the steering rack, you need to try very hard, and a new branded one will cost only 250 euros. For the role weak link suspensions can only be assigned penny bushings front stabilizer(9 euros original and from two or three for analogues), which have to be updated every 30-50 thousand kilometers. After 50-70 thousand, the turn of the front stabilizer struts comes (20 euros each). The decline of the rear stabilizer struts (the same 20 euros) comes later, after 80-110 thousand kilometers. At the same time, the term of the rear shock absorbers (45 euros each), wheel bearings (40 euros) and ball bearings is suitable - although they are sold in a load with levers, they cost “in the original” only 45 euros. Front shock absorbers (45 euros each) usually last up to 100-120 thousand kilometers, silent blocks - up to 110-140 thousand, and bearings (40 euros) rarely start to buzz before 140-160 thousand kilometers. Not before attention requires and rear suspension- what is McPherson in all-wheel drive versions, what is with a semi-independent beam in front-wheel drive.

So Duster is a clear confirmation that simplicity is the key to health. There is less trouble with him than with most classmates, and a few repairs will not ruin the cost of spare parts. Yes, and the purchase itself does not hit the pocket hard: to become the owner of a three-five-year-old copy, half a million rubles may be enough - only the “Chinese” are more accessible from imported crossovers. And even for very fresh restyled two-year-olds, 600-700 thousand can be enough, and millions of price tags do not exist at all.

In severe frosts, a poor-quality filter passes paraffin particles further through the system, rendering the high-pressure fuel pump and nozzles unusable. In a neglected case, the approximate cost of repairs will be at least 70 thousand rubles. Recently they brought such a Duster on a tow truck: it stopped starting in the cold. The scan tool detected a weak engine start operating pressure issued by the high-pressure fuel pump - fortunately, the matter was limited to replacing the fuel filter clogged with paraffin clots.

The H4M gasoline engine that appeared after restyling, unlike its predecessors, does not get along well with gas equipment: there is a high risk of valve burnout. And do not believe the factory instruction manual, which does not indicate an oil change in an automatic transmission. We strongly recommend changing the working fluid at least once every 100 thousand kilometers. Changing the oil in the transfer case and rear gear also not listed in any scheduled maintenance, but we advise you to update it every 75 thousand kilometers. By the way, often when checking the “factory” oil level in the gearbox and razdatka, we observe a shortage, which is unacceptable. And keep in mind that the transfer case uses a different gear oil than other units.

As for “abnormal” modifications, first of all I advise you to install the mesh in the bumper slot, especially for pre-styling cars: the window there is so large that not only dirt and fluff, but also stones easily get into the radiator. If off-road trips are planned, metal protection will not interfere fuel tank, rear axle gearbox and converter petrol versions. But the armrest that comes as an additional option, if installed, is only original: the analogues are very flimsy. We generally refuse to deal with non-original arch extensions: unlike branded ones, they often begin to peel off the very next day.


I bought an all-wheel drive Renault Duster with a 1.6 engine in May 2012 and recently sold it with a mileage of 160 thousand kilometers, some of which were off-road.

After the first winter, there were numerous chips and swelling of the paint on the rear doors and wheel arches, as well as cracks in the paint at the junction of the sidewall and roof - everything was fixed under warranty. With a run of about 100 thousand kilometers, the lower door seals rubbed the paint on the thresholds to the ground, and deep corrosion even appeared on the lower part of the central pillar of the body. In addition, the chrome trim on the tailgate erases the paint to metal.

The insecurity of the engine compartment from dirt was defeated by installing a door seal from the VAZ-2109. I eliminated the ingress of water into the wells of the ignition coils by installing non-standard fan-shaped windshield washer nozzles and putting them on a sealant, and on a run of 140 thousand kilometers I replaced the cracked rubber tips of the coils.

After 70 thousand kilometers, a backlash appeared in the crosses of the driveshaft - the high cost of the new unit prompted me to turn to a cardan repair shop, where both crosses were replaced and outboard bearing. At 150 thousand kilometers, the right one rattled outer CV joint, and soon asked for a replacement and the left one. I believe the reason was a suspension lift of three centimeters and frequent off-road visits.

With a run of 30 thousand kilometers under warranty changed the right front arm pendants: pounded spherical bearing. Subsequently, I changed the right lever again with a run of 140 thousand kilometers (silent blocks were worn out) and the left one after 100 thousand kilometers (the ball bearing rattled). Then they lost their functionality. rear shock absorbers, but the front passed without problems the entire period. And the main consumable in the suspension is the front stabilizer bushings, which were enough for 20-25 thousand kilometers. bushings rear stabilizer changed only once at 150 thousand kilometers. Stabilizer struts replaced once in a circle.

With a run of 90 thousand kilometers, I discovered a leak in the tube of the drain line of the power steering - new part made in the workshop. Next, the wheel bearings began to fail: first the rear right buzzed, and then the left. The front right one gave up at 140 thousand kilometers, but the left one is holding on. When replacing the front one, I had to do it and tightly soured in knuckle ABS sensor.

At the 75th thousand kilometers, the sound signal suddenly stopped working: the wire going to the button in the left steering column lever was frayed (I solved the problem with a soldering iron). For the third winter of operation, the contacts in the rear number plate lights oxidized and rotted. By 140 thousand kilometers, the steering wheel cover was so worn out that the steering wheel had to be replaced. And in the upholstery of the seats, two small holes appeared on the back at the place of installation of the electric heating elements.

But in general, Duster met my expectations, pleased with its versatility, spaciousness and decent cross-country ability even on serious off-road conditions (by the way, I never managed to overheat the rear-wheel drive clutch). So I didn’t face the problem of choosing a new car: it was again the all-wheel drive Duster, only a two-liter one.

Simpleton Renault Duster rarely gets into criminal reports. But this does not mean that you should not bother with checking the markings at all: problems with the body number can arise as a result of an accident and, as a result, body repair.

The identification VIN-number (it is also the body number) is located on the front right support of the suspension strut in the direction of travel. And when hit in the front right quarter, this place in Duster is often damaged. If traces of repair, non-factory welding and non-original sealant are found, the car will be sent for examination during registration with the traffic police, and if it turns out that during the repair the support was completely separated from the body, registration will be denied.

The marking plate is fixed in the doorway front passenger on the center stand. The absence of a plate is not a reason to refuse registration, but it should alert a potential buyer. Indirectly, the absence of a plate can usually indicate a criminal trail, but in the case of Dusters, it is also more often a sign of a body repair that involved the B-pillar, which in itself does not bode well.

Well, if when examining the VIN number and the marking plate you did not see any traces of extraneous interference, just do not forget to compare the registration data indicated in the TCP with the actual numbers on the car.


Despite the fact that the Renault Duster is a popular and top-selling crossover, finding a really good copy was not easy.

For example, there were no more than two dozen cars with a diesel engine in the entire capital and its environs, although we were looking for a car both from official dealers and individuals. The very first negotiations and inspections revealed that official dealers greatly increase the price of cars even in poor condition, and private sellers, in addition, try to hide their real condition during a call to an ad.

As a result, before finding a car for Autoreview, we examined sixteen (!) cars, half of which were non-retail quality. What does it mean? Too many painted (and not in the best way) parts, there were instances after serious accidents, with missing labels and, of course, with twisted mileage. I suppose that the indicators on the odometer of the copy we bought (85 thousand kilometers) are also underestimated, although in all other respects the car completely suited us. This is a 2012 diesel Duster in full working order, with a clean legal history, sole owner and a few typical "urban" bodywork defects in the form of a painted front fender, scratches on the sills and lapping on the right rear flare. Of course, a Duster with a diesel engine and a “handle” is not as easy to sell as a popular gasoline one with a two-liter engine and an “automatic”. However, there are also buyers who are aware of the economy, high-torque and long service life of this diesel engine, so we hope to get 530-550 thousand rubles for our copy.

Euro NCAP is a European committee that conducts independent full-fledged crash tests on a variety of vehicles. And in the past 2016, this same committee conducted a study of a popular in Russia, and not only a French car, budget Renault Duster, both passive and active complete security, and received this model, only 3 stars, which is actually not complete, but a failure. The committee's requirements are extremely high. For example, since 2010, the built-in system of the so-called all-round stability must certainly be present in the basic new configuration of the car.

The crash test, which was carried out more than once, by the above organization clearly showed everyone that for all passengers this vehicle, including children, during the trip, safety in this case is at an average level of 3-4 points on a 5-point scale, and for pedestrians in general at the level of 1 point. It turns out that pedestrians should stay away from the Renault Duster.

The crash test evaluation showed that the developers of the "Frenchman" needed to make some improvements, and the owners of the cars became aware of the potential for all kinds of dangers, and negative consequences which should be avoided.

General safety in the car

The safety of all adult passengers in the Renault Duster model is 74 percent. Frontal impacts, so to speak, are very dangerous for passengers, and, of course, for the driver himself. Huge pressure on the chest area of ​​​​a person, despite even safety belts and, of course, airbags. But in the test mannequins, the legs were not injured in any way at all. And during a strong blow, the back door opened, which is a bad indicator. Although in general in this test the car scored 11 points, which corresponds to a solid three on a 5-point scale. During the simulation of a strong collision of a car with a pole, the same story with a human chest, the score received - 6 points - and this is really bad.

Some worse car passed another test in which a side impact was simulated. During the impact from the passenger side driver's door opened, and this at times increases the risk of injury. The resulting score is only 7.2 points.

Things are much more unpleasant and worse in a collision from behind. IN this case there is an increased likelihood of severe cervical vertebrae injuries. The resulting score is only 5.2 points.

Passengers children are somewhat better protected. In this category, the budget car crossover Renault Duster received 78 percent. For the model, this was the maximum score.

Further, according to the age groups, the highest rating was given to road transport young passengers of the tested car under the age of 1.5 years - 18 points. The crash test was carried out using a baby dummy, which is in a special car (for a certain age) child seat, which is located on the back seat. During the frontal impact, the dummy was held in its original position in its own place. In turn, the mannequin, which imitated a child at the age of 3, also remained in the chair, but the body moved forward a lot, therefore, the crash test score dropped to 17 points.

In the car, you can disable the function so that the airbag is deployed, and therefore baby car seat You can even install on the front seat of the car, but only against the direction of the car.

There is one thing but - it is impossible to determine the state, so to speak, of the airbag activity, because on dashboard Duster information about this is not displayed in any way.

Pedestrian safety

A video of a crash test made not so long ago, or rather in 2016, proves that Renault Duster "does not like" and can easily cripple pedestrians, and therefore the score is 28 percent, and a complete failure in this test. The front edge of the hood and, accordingly, the bumper severely cripple the legs of pedestrians who have fallen under the wheels. Although, I wonder what even a passenger car will not cripple. But, apparently, our test model is very cruel in this regard. The body can also cause extremely serious injuries in the head area. And this time the result of the test was 10 points.

Without exception, all the means of active increased security of the tested Renault Duster car are concentrated and consist in one service, which reports that the seat belt is not fastened. And then the car received almost the lowest score - only 2 points. And well deserved. The overall score for active and effective safety was 29 points. The built-in airbags, which are intended for the driver and even for all passengers, raised the rating a little higher. But at the same time, it is worth noting that they simply do not exist in the basic new configuration, and separately, as an option, they are very expensive.

However, experts say that you should not panic, because on some cars that drive around Russia, the only means of all security is a small icon installed on the dashboard. The Mercedes Benz Citan Combi has exactly the same rating, and the Jeep Compass model generally received only 2 stars.

What are the results

Interesting fact that the Renault Clio last year was officially declared the safest in its segment. It is not for nothing that the “Frenchman” Renault Duster is not sold at all in Europe, and the Clio is not sold in the Russian Federation.

If we take into account the fact that our car is a budget car, then the overall rating is satisfactory, in the C grade region, not so bad. Plus, the developers of the model, following the results of watching the video of the crash test, received a lesson, and have already officially announced that the car of the 2017 model year will be sold with the most modern safety systems equipped, as well as with some computer assistants of the driver himself.

The end of this year turned out to be very eventful for the Euro NCAP organization: the results of the previous series of crash tests were published only two weeks ago - and now a new batch of victims has arrived. This time, fifteen car models took part in the tests at once, which can be divided into two groups - newcomers and old-timers of the market.

Among the seven new products, four cars earned the maximum five stars: these are liftbacks (some of the results were taken from the donor fifth series sedan) and, midsize crossover and compact SUV. The "Five" was also awarded the crossover, which in Europe occupies the same niche as Rio X Line in Russia, however, there are two nuances. Firstly, the maximum rating is given only to versions with a security package (it includes systems automatic braking and tracking road markings), while without it there are only three stars. And secondly, the tests of Stonik were not actually carried out! Since this SUV repeats in terms of the power structure of the body and equipment, the Euro NCAP experts simply assigned Stonik the marks earned by the original hatchback.

For us, where more interesting results crossover tests, because in a year and a half or two this model will appear in Russia under the Renault brand and will inevitably repeat the market success of its predecessor. Alas, in the current Euro NCAP ranking new Duster received only three stars, although it surpassed the previous model in terms of safety. The loads on the front riders during a displaced impact on a collapsible barrier are reduced (but still exceed the absolutely safe threshold), a side impact on a pole no longer threatens the driver with fatal injuries. Although after a head-on collision with a wall at a speed of 50 km / h, which is more demanding on the vehicle's restraint systems, the Duster's front riders risk their heads: overloads are high. And the seats still don't protect against whiplash in a rear-end collision. Pedestrian safety has been improved, but main reason, for which Duster did not score more than three stars - the absence electronic assistants. However, more on that later.

Another three-star newcomer is Chinese compact crossover which entered the UK market. His passive safety is not exemplary, and the most disastrous positions are the same as those of the Duster: a frontal impact into an indestructible wall and a collision from behind. And he also has no electronic assistants in the same way.

The same circumstance has become the main stumbling block for most old-timer models on the way to high rating security.

The message of Euro NCAP is simple: cars that hit the market a few years ago are not as safe as new ones. Of the eight cars that have been sold in Europe for several years and have now been tested by Euro NCAP, only the recently updated hatchback was able to earn five stars. Its passive safety is not ideal (the loads on the legs and chests of riders exceed the injury threshold), but there are systems for automatic braking and tracking markings.

Four stars earned even more compact hatchback Toyota Ago. He has the cherished electronics in the list of options (without it, the final rating is completely three-star), but he fell asleep on frontal impact into the wall: the load on the chest and head of the rear passenger turned out to be prohibitive - serious injuries are guaranteed.

And now the most interesting. Hatchbacks, and Opel Karl, as well as a compact van (its rating was automatically assigned to the short version without the Grand prefix) in general showed a level of protection for riders close to Aygo: rating for passive safety - from 61 to 76%. But modern electronic assistants for automatic braking and control road markings they are not allowed even for a surcharge. Therefore - only three Euro NCAP stars.

Well, the hatchback crash test became the most resonant. The choice of this model seems strange: under the name this car debuted back in 2005, and already this December it was going to be discontinued, but at the insistence of the trade union, the release date was extended until July 2018 in order to load the Fiat plant in Melfi with at least something. Twelve years ago, the Grande Punto became the first B+ class car to achieve a five-star Euro NCAP rating, but now the organization says that the Punto is now also the first car in history not to receive a single star! Paradox?

Of course, over the past twelve years, Euro NCAP standards have been made stricter, and Punto itself has not become better. If in 2005 a hatchback with six airbags scored 13.6 points out of 16 for a frontal overlap crash test, and a maximum of 18 points for two side impacts, now the base Punto with only two airbags has six points out of eight for a frontal crash. -test and 6.7 points out of 16 for the lateral (hitting the pole was not carried out due to the lack of security curtains). Loads on riders are great, but even with such results, the Fiat Punto could scrape together two stars out of five. If it weren’t for the notorious electronic assistants: the Italian hatchback doesn’t even have signaling devices unfastened seat belts not to mention the auto-braking system. Therefore, the score for preventive security- 0 points. And if at least in one of the disciplines the car gets a “steering wheel”, then, according to the current Euro NCAP rules, all the stars scored are burned out.

Is such a value system with an emphasis on electronic assistants fair? Even in Europe itself, the Euro NCAP organization is increasingly reproached for the fact that the chosen path of toughening tests is not entirely correct. In this regard, the example of the American Insurance Institute for Highway IIHS Security, which introduced in 2012: 25% of the front end instead of the usual 40%. In this case, the blow most often falls past the spar, the main energy-absorbing element. Moreover, the Americans beat the car not only the driver's, but in some cases passenger side front end. On such a test, many famous models burned down, and manufacturers began to take such a test into account when designing new cars. There may be more benefits from this than from electronic assistants. Which, of course, does not cancel the introduction of the latter.

Next year, the Euro NCAP committee promises to introduce new, even tougher test rules. And which approach appeals to you more: European, with an emphasis on assistive electronics, or American, with tougher crash tests themselves?
