New Toyota Fortuner: how it differs from Prado and Kruzak. Test drive Toyota Fortuner

13.07.2019

But first, let's deal with two important points. First - how, in fact, is the name Fortuner pronounced correctly? Toyota is categorical here: no "Fortuners", "Fortuners", "Fotuners" and other variations! In Russia it is used English pronunciation words Fortuner, and it sounds like "Fortuner", with the stress on the first syllable.

Why only in this way, and not otherwise, is available in our section "Let me speak". By the way, some Russian wits have already stuck the nicknames "Grumble" and "Lucky" (Fortuner - from the word Fortune, "fortune") to the car ...

Fortuner in Russia has at least 17-inch wheels with 265/65 tires. The top version of the "Prestige" (pictured) has 265/60 R18 road tires, but for the test they put more "toothy" tires. LED headlights near and high beam- basic equipment.

The second point is genealogy. Contrary to common misconception, neither the first (2005-2015) nor the second generation of Fortuner (since 2015) use the Land platform Cruiser Prado! At the heart of the Fortuner, both past and present, is a more durable frame chassis and units Hilux pickup corresponding generations.

Minimum price

Maximum price

Although the platforms have differences, of course. The wheelbase of the current Fortuner (2745 mm) is 340 mm shorter than the current one. Hilux generations. The pendants are also different. Fortuner dampers are already different, with more comfortable settings. And instead of rear springs - softer springs, anti-roll bar and other kinematics with 4 longitudinal jet thrusts and one transverse.

Question from azarenko

What is the difference between Fortuner and Prado?

Toyota claims Fortuner as a car for those who do not want to overpay for Prado, and plans to actively use the car as an SUV and "expeditioner". It’s a pity to ruin the expensive and sophisticated Prado off the roads, Casco insurance costs it like a cast-iron bridge, and they buy it more often as a “status car”, and not an earthmoving projectile. And the Fortuner standing a step below is just that simplified and more utilitarian alternative, without unnecessary pathos and show-offs.

Against the background of the "Asian" Fortuner furniture, the Prado salon clearly looks stricter, more concise - and more expensive. The slippery wood on the steering wheel is out of place, the easily soiled multimedia screen (no navigation) is dissonant with the ancient buttons on the dashboard, and the plump leather “cheeks” of the center console interfere with the knees. But the gears click on the steering wheel, there's room for coffee and a phone, and an electric heater in the air ducts helps warm up the cabin faster.

In addition, SUVs have differences in bodies, different interiors and equipment levels (Fortuner is simpler). For example, cameras all-round view, ventilation of the front seats, 3-zone "climate", rear air suspension, adaptive and off-road cruise control, auto-brake function, lane control and driver fatigue, Prado has an MTS off-road mode selection system, but the more utilitarian Fortuner does not have them from the word "completely".

Prado has permanent all-wheel drive with a Torsen interaxle "self-blocking" (it can be blocked by force), while Fortuner has a front axle that is hard-wired by the driver (part-time scheme) only on slippery surfaces. Forced blocking both SUVs have a rear cross-axle differential.

  1. The glove compartment is 2-storey (the top one is cooled), under the corner air ducts there are retractable cup holders.
  2. The "beak" of the armrest prevents you from using the buttons rear lock, disable stabilization and calibration of tire pressure sensors. In front of them are the keys for the "power" and economical modes of the automatic transmission.
  3. Block "climate" is clear and convenient. The all-wheel drive selector (lower left) is easy to use by touch without taking your eyes off the road. Nearby are buttons for the hill descent assistant, a heated steering wheel and 1-stage heated front seats.

Dimensions are also different: the Prado is 45mm longer, 30mm wider and 60mm taller than the Fortuner. More from Prado wheelbase 45 mm longer and track 50 mm wider. The Fortuner has more ground clearance (225 mm versus 215), but the Prado has a steeper approach angle (32 degrees versus 29), and parity in the exit angle (25 degrees).

Question from arturfritzandreev

Is the engine still the same? How about the old ones?

Not really. Under the hood of the Fortuner supplied to Russia is a completely new 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV turbodiesel, which debuted in 2015 on current generation, and in the same year he registered for Prado. By the way, he also has a 150-horsepower younger brother 2.4-liter 2GD-FTV, but Fortuner with such an engine is not yet sold to Russia, although it is available in other world markets.

The Russian diesel Fortuner has two batteries and an engine coolant heater in the form of a viscous coupling that heats up during operation and is driven by a belt from the crankshaft pulley (the same scheme for Hilux and LC200). The parking lot can also be lifted idling button. Prado has preheater engine and cabin, controlled by application or SMS, but Fortuner is not supposed to.

The top-end 2.8 liter diesel engine has a direct 5-stage fuel injection with a pressure of 2200 bar, a turbocharger that gains momentum faster with variable geometry and timing chain. Recoil - 177 hp and 450 Nm of torque, while the 3-liter predecessor had 171 "horses" and 360 Nm. The new diesel engine complies with Euro-5 standards, for which, in addition to the catalyst, a particulate filter. The gearbox for the Russian market is only a 6-speed automatic.

With the new diesel and automatic transmission, the Fortuner drove faster and quieter than it was with the 3-liter predecessor. Without revelations, but confidently pulls from a place and accelerates from medium speeds and revolutions, less often requires switching "down", leaving due to increased torque. And now the diesel engine also reacts to the gas pedal more quickly than it was. You can also rev up the engine and gearbox by pressing the Power Mode button near the box selector - it makes gas reactions sharper.

The engine compartment, aluminum transfer case and fuel tank are covered with steel protection. The towing eyes are hidden behind the upper plastic shields.

On the track, with active acceleration, the diesel pressure already expectedly decreases, although overtaking was given without problems here. By the way, the box is still not manual mode, and traditional ranges for Toyota. That is, the figure when "tidy" does not show the step, but the switching range - for example, from the first to the third. As for the highway engine speed, in 6th gear and 2000 rpm, the speedometer shows almost 120 km / h.

On the go, the diesel Prado will be quieter: the Fortuner has a characteristic diesel growl that breaks into the cabin more, especially on high revs during active acceleration and overtaking. As for fuel consumption, a pre-styling rode with us in the column diesel Prado. In city-highway-off-road mode on-board computer Fortuner got 12.5-13.1 l / 100 km, Prado - 13.4-14.1 l / 100 km. Fuel tank Fortuner has 80 liters, Prado has 87.

Leather seat upholstery and a servo driver's seat are only in the top, although it also does not have a lumbar support setting. Ease of landing - without revelations (Pradovskie chairs seem more comfortable), and the ranges of longitudinal settings of the steering wheel and seats are too small for tall people. There are handrails on the racks only at the front.

In terms of dynamics, the Fortuner is also faster than the Prado: maximum speed 180 km / h against 175, and acceleration to 100 km / h for the diesel Fortuner takes 11.2 seconds against 12.7 for the Prado. Why such a difference if the engines, gearboxes and even the main pairs (3.9) are the same for both SUVs? The larger diesel Prado is heavier: it has a curb weight of 2235-2500 kg, depending on the configuration, while the Fortuner weighs 2215-2260 kg. By the way, the weight of the towed trailer with brakes for both SUVs is the same and is 3 tons.

Question from shax0055 and shefah89

How does it hold the road high speeds, what is the smoothness of the ride and vibration load?

In tests of off-road vehicles, the journalistic fraternity often writes that they say that this car would have “more toothy” rubber. Toyota clearly heard these calls and changed their shoes test machines, having put more "evil" Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac AT tires in the serial size 265/60 R18 instead of the standard road tires (these are put on the top configuration "Prestige", which was on the test). And since we had to drive on icy roads, this rubber was also studded.

  1. Air ducts are on the ceiling and under the front seats. The ceiling panel controls only the second "air conditioner".
  2. At the back there is a drawer with a 12-volt outlet, pockets for small items and hooks for bags.
  3. Landing on the middle sliding row is low, the knees are spacious, but under the front seats the legs in large shoes are cramped. With a height of 180 cm, a fist passes over the head, in front there is a larger gap to the ceiling. The backrest (there is an armrest with cup holders) cannot be folded back far - the folded chairs of the 3rd row interfere.

No doubt, on such "bast shoes" Fortuner looks cooler, and off-road tires cling and "row" unlike standard ones, and on stones you are less afraid of punctures due to the thicker sidewall and developed tread. But such wheels are very weighty, and grown unsprung masses immediately reflected in how the car rides. But it is clear what the future owner needs to prepare for, who wants to put more off-road tires on the Fortuner.

And you need to prepare for a rougher and bumpier ride than the Prado, although this should not be surprising. On the track, the Fortuner holds a straight line, handles and brakes adequately, rolls predictably, and the tires are less noisy than expected. But also because of the heavy wheels, Fortuner transmits medium and large canvas defects to the steering wheel, seats and body in the form of pokes and vibrations, shakes the rear riders into speed bumps.

You can connect the front axle (H4 mode) at speeds up to 100 km / h, and to turn it off speed limits No. IN front gear there is an oil overheating sensor that sends a signal to the dashboard.

On graders and primers, you also need to "heap" with an eye. As long as it is more or less even under the wheels, everything is fine, you can drive briskly. But if you get into a large hole, then along with blows to the steering wheel, it is easy to catch a hard breakdown of the front suspension, which happened to us more than once or twice.

If potholes and gullies go in succession, then on a good move the suspension does not have time to work out the course of heavy wheels - and the Fortuner, trembling with its whole body, begins to "swim", especially astern. Here it is necessary not to yawn and catch it with the wheel, because the stabilization system is in no hurry to intervene in the process and allows the stern to move noticeably to the side. In order to feel sorry for the car and passengers, in such scenarios, you must either slow down or relieve pressure in the tires to soften the ride.

Question from yuragrustniy

Fortuner was supposed to be cheaper than Prado, but something went wrong...

And Fortuner even in expensive trim levels cheaper, especially when comparing diesel versions of SUVs! And then the alignment is obvious. A restyled 5-seater Land Cruiser Prado with a 2.8-liter diesel engine costs from 2,922,000 rubles, and a 7-seater version with this engine costs already 4,026,000 rubles! Against this background, the diesel Fortuner costs 2,599,000 rubles for the Elegance package and 2,827,000 rubles for the Prestige. That is, already at the start, Fortuner is 323,000 rubles cheaper than Prado. And even in the top version, it is still 95,000 rubles cheaper than the basic diesel version of its older brother.

  1. Adults in the third row will not be fun at all.
  2. IN Russian Fortuner so far only 7-seater. The third row in the stowed position is strapped to the sidewalls of the body and eats up a lot of space in the trunk. Toyota advises to unscrew these seats if they are not needed.
  3. With the second row of seats folded forward, a flat floor for the entire length of the trunk does not work.

As noted above, the Fortuner has simpler equipment than the more "premium" Prado, but it's still not bad. Already in the database there is a "winter" package, which includes heating of the steering wheel, front seats, mirrors, parking areas for "wipers", a diesel heater with an additional electric interior heater, as well as ceiling air ducts for rear passengers.

The starting price also includes LED foglights and headlights (near/far), footrests, 1-zone "climate" and a second air conditioner for the rear rows, a cooled / heated glove box, cruise control, a leather multifunction steering wheel with paddles "blades", a servo drive for windows and folding mirrors, reversing camera with parking sensors, light and tire pressure sensors and multimedia system with 7 inch screen and 6 speakers. 7 airbags, vehicle and trailer stabilization systems, and an uphill start assistant are responsible for safety.

In the top version, automatic windows, a tailgate servo with memory, an electrical adjustment of the driver's seat, interior trim with a mixture of genuine and synthetic leather, keyless access to the salon with a push-button start of the motor, as well as an assistant to descend from the mountain.

Large suspension travel and rear rigid blocking compensate for less "evil" than the Prado, electronic imitation of wheel locks. And on tenacious tires, Fortuner flourishes off-road, raking out where there is nothing to catch on the "highway". "Ponizhayka" with a number of 2.56 allows you to turn large wheels without problems.

Regarding the arrival of Fortuner in Russia, it is already crying with its taillights main competitor in person, although it is cheaper in price. So, a 5-seater diesel MPS (2.4 l, 181 hp and 430 Nm) in Russia can be bought with a 6-speed manual transmission, giving 2,249,900 rubles for a car manufactured in 2018. Diesel options with an 8-speed Aisin automatic - from 2,499,990 to 2,899,990 rubles for 2018 (2017 is 50,000 rubles cheaper). All versions have all-wheel drive Super Select II and rigid rear differential lock.

By equipment Pajero Sport in something more interesting than the Toyota SUV. In it, depending on the configuration, you can get adaptive cruise control, all-round camera, control of "blind" zones and exit from the parking lot, frontal collision mitigation system, headlight washer, 2-zone climate control and heated rear sofa (in addition to the existing heated steering wheel and front seats). Fortuner is deprived of all this.

Question from sakhalin_td

Why won't there be a 4-liter petrol engine in Russia?

Indeed, for the new Fortuner in some markets (for example, in United Arab Emirates or South Africa) a 1GR-FE 4-litre V6 petrol is offered. But not in Russia: we have such an engine only for the more prestigious Land Cruiser Prado, where this engine now develops a “tax” 249 hp.

The fording depth of the Fortuner is a respectable 700 mm. During the test, they dived into the water above the thresholds, but the interior was not flooded, the seals are holding.

By the way, Prado with a V6 engine is more expensive diesel version, and it accounts for only about 10% of Russian sales per year. It is logical that for our market, Toyota does not want to put an unpopular engine on a more utilitarian Fortuner, thereby winding up its already considerable price. And along the way, creating an extra competitor to Prado. Marketing, in a nutshell.

Question from santehnik0201

Will they bring a variant with "mechanics"?

Diesel Fortuner with 6-speed manual transmission, available on a number of world markets, we will not see it in Russia yet. But in February, we already started accepting orders for Fortuners with a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder 2TR-FE gasoline engine and a return of 166 hp. and 245 Nm. AND basic version with this motor it just has a 5-speed "mechanics".

There are also two towing eyes on the back. Full size spare, as on Prado, hangs in the rear overhang.

Except mechanical box, petrol SUV It also has a 6-speed automatic. Production of such Fortuners for Russia will start in Thailand in February, "live" cars will appear by spring.

As expected, the gasoline Fortuner was cheaper and its diesel version, and the updated Land Cruiser Prado with the same 2.7-liter engine. So, Fortuner with manual transmission will cost 1,999,000 rubles for the Standard version, that is, at least 250,000 rubles cheaper than Pradik. In the base - front and knee pillows, air conditioning, fabric interior, 17-inch forged steel wheels, halogen headlights, body-coloured door handles, light sensor, heated and electrically adjustable mirrors, rear axle differential lock, system exchange rate stability and trailer stabilization, an initial audio system with Bluetooth and a third row of seats.

Often, automakers do not indulge the Russian market with new models, but Toyota nevertheless went for broke and expanded the classic line of SUVs by presenting the utilitarian Fortuner at the Land Cruiser`s Land event. A track was prepared in advance for testing, which caused a lot of indignation among onlookers: “too easy”, “I have the same road to my house”, “staged performance”. Did you ask for off-road? We have it!

Video review Toyota Fortuner

“Hello, can you tell me how to get to the waterfalls?” “But you won’t get there, we don’t even go there in the summer ...”

“And where is the road to the waterfalls?” “Guys, there is no road there, don’t break the car”…

Good route to go! There really is no road to the waterfall on Kudma: a narrow track, muddy from rain and snow, among closely growing trees. Crossovers and SUVs today let them stand in the parking lot, full-size SUVs, alas, too. Dense vegetation simply will not allow these giants to pass between the trunks. And for Fortuner just right.

Comparison of Toyota Fortuner with Hilux and LC Prado

Toyota Fortuner is the closest relative of the well-known Hilux. He also, like his older brother, has a Heavy Duty frame designed for harsh off-road. But the Fortuner still had improvements. The first most important difference from the pickup was the suspension, which forced the frame to be upgraded and the wheelbase reduced by 45mm. Instead of a leaf spring, the “lucky one” got a spring independent five-link suspension with hydraulic shock absorbers and a stabilizer bar.

The front suspension remained the same, it was only reconfigured for a smooth ride. This becomes noticeable from the first minutes of the trip: small flaws in the canvas are given only by a slight wiggle, and serious bumps do not bring the rear passengers to a state of pitching. Otherwise, he holds the road perfectly and unquestioningly obeys his owner.

Fortuner filled some hollow space in the Russian market between Hilux and LC Prado. Fortuner is not as rough as a pickup truck, but not as elegant as premium SUV. The "lucky" has its own special charm, achieved thanks to the slanted headlights and streamlined body lines. The exterior was not borrowed from anyone, but family traits can be recognized at a glance.

Many try to compare Toyota Fortuner with Prado, someone even snorts that the novelty costs as much as Prado itself, and if there is no difference, then why pay more? The engine is the same as that of the Hilux and LC Prado: a 2.8-liter turbodiesel that produces 177 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque, in general, is nothing out of the ordinary. Why reinvent the wheel if you can't find a more reliable "heart"?

Now let's take a look at the fact: LC Prado is designed for comfortable trips business people through the urban jungle, he has the appropriate suspension. Seeing Prado, everyone immediately has an associative array - wealthy and independent, he is now going to the office "decorously-pancake", but he is not averse to driving along the sandy beach after a working day to the yacht club for a new portion of emotions. Toyota Land Cruiser Prado in a similar configuration will cost more than Fortuner by as much as 700,000 rubles. Does it mean there is a difference? Even some! Toyota Fortuner is suitable for active family people who do not want to sit still. Skiing, river rafting, trips to the mountains, all this will be possible thanks to a lucky person who has absorbed best qualities two flagships.

On the Toyota Fortuner, the most thrill is to drive on a broken primer with cruising speed. Turnovers let the weaklings slow down, Fortuner will pave its own way even where it does not exist. Fear, delight, horror, surprise — this is not a car, but the quintessence of feelings.

Differences between Toyota Fortuner and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport

Now, probably, again the skeptics will go into battle - Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and costs less, and the Super Select system is there. Okay, let's compare. A similar equipment Sport costs 2,649,990 rubles against 2,599,000 rubles for the Forchuner. The point here is that Toyota Fortuner in Russia has only two configurations and what the Toyota team called the base with seven! in some places, the representatives of Mitsu is considered one of the juicy trim levels. If suddenly someday Toyota will bring a really empty equipment, which is produced in Thailand, then there will be no end to those who wish. The question is, is it worth sacrificing your comfort?

Straight Mitsubishi competitor Pajero Sport is famous for its Super Select all-wheel drive system, Toyota Fortuner is equipped with a hard-wired all-wheel drive system Part Time. Many incomprehensible letters, now we will explain in Russian.

Part Time or Super Select: which is better?

In a transmission with Super Select, there are 3 differentials: between the front wheels, center in transfer box and between rear wheels. Super Select allows the use of all-wheel drive with a loose "4H" center differential and a locked "4HLc" center differential when the transmission is in all-wheel drive mode. In the Super Select system, a viscous coupling is used in the transfer case, which, when used for a long time in the “4H” mode, overheats and may fail prematurely.

Part Time has existed since time immemorial. It is a hard connection diagram of the front axle. That is, front and rear wheels always spin at the same speed. center differential absent. If the car is needed mainly for off-road, and it is not planned to use all-wheel drive on asphalt, part-time will fully justify itself, since one of the bridges is immediately connected hard, nothing needs to be blocked. Yes, and the design is simpler and more reliable: there is no differential and locks, there are no mechanical or electric drives to these locks, there is no extra pneumatics or hydraulics. And there is nothing to break here. Feel free to skid, accelerate and conquer the passes.

Don't listen to the skeptics, listen to yourself! No wonder Saddam Hussein said that "Two things work flawlessly, this is a Kalashnikov assault rifle and Toyota."

Fortuner in Russia has been waiting for a long time. The first generation was close, but you won’t bite: the car was made in Kazakhstan, but they weren’t allowed in Russia. The second generation from 2015 came to us late, delaying adaptation and certification for our market. What did you end up waiting for? Now we'll tell you.

But first, let's deal with two important points. First - how, in fact, is the name Fortuner pronounced correctly? But it is clear what the future owner needs to prepare for, who wants to put more off-road tires on the Fortuner.

And you need to prepare for a rougher and bumpier ride than the Prado, although this should not be surprising. On the track, the Fortuner holds a straight line, handles and brakes adequately, rolls predictably, and the tires are less noisy than expected. But also because of the heavy wheels, Fortuner transmits medium and large canvas defects to the steering wheel, seats and body in the form of pokes and vibrations, shakes the rear riders into speed bumps.

You can connect the front axle (H4 mode) at speeds up to 100 km / h, and there are no speed limits for disabling it. The front gearbox has an oil overheating sensor that sends a signal to the dashboard.

Fortuner was supposed to be cheaper than Prado, but something went wrong...

And Fortuner, even in expensive trim levels, is cheaper, especially when comparing diesel versions of SUVs!

Adults in the third row will not be fun at all. In Russia, Fortuner is still only 7-seater. The third row in the stowed position is strapped to the sidewalls of the body and eats up a lot of space in the trunk. Toyota advises to unscrew these seats if they are not needed.

The starting price also includes LED foglights and headlights (near/far), footrests, 1-zone "climate" and a second air conditioner for the rear rows, a cooled / heated glove box, cruise control, a leather multifunction steering wheel with paddles "blades", a servo drive for windows and folding mirrors, a rearview camera with parking sensors, light and tire pressure sensors and a multimedia system with a 7-inch screen and 6 speakers. 7 airbags, vehicle and trailer stabilization systems, and an uphill start assistant are responsible for safety.

The top version adds automatic windows, a tailgate servo with memory, an electric driver's seat, interior trim with a mixture of natural and synthetic leather, keyless entry to the cabin with a push-button engine start, as well as an assistant downhill.

Regarding the arrival of Fortuner in Russia, its main competitor, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, is already crying with its taillights, although it is cheaper at a price. All versions have Super Select II all-wheel drive and a hard locking rear differential.

In terms of equipment, the Pajero Sport is somewhat more interesting than the Toyota SUV. In it, depending on the configuration, you can get adaptive cruise control, an all-round camera, control of "blind" zones and exit from the parking lot, a frontal collision mitigation system, a headlight washer, a 2-zone climate control and rear sofa heating (in addition to available heated steering wheel and front seats). Fortuner is deprived of all this.

Why won't there be a 4-liter petrol engine in Russia?

Indeed, for the new Fortuner in some markets (for example, in the United Arab Emirates or South Africa), a 4-liter petrol V6 of the 1GR-FE series is offered.

By the way, Prado with a V6 engine is more expensive than the diesel version, and it accounts for only about 10% of Russian sales per year. It is logical that for our market, Toyota does not want to put an unpopular engine on a more utilitarian Fortuner, thereby winding up its already considerable price. And along the way, creating an extra competitor to Prado. Marketing, in a nutshell.

Will they bring a variant with "mechanics"?

Diesel Fortuner with a 6-speed manual transmission, available in a number of world markets, we will not see in Russia yet. But in February, we already started accepting orders for Fortuners with a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder 2TR-FE gasoline engine and a return of 166 hp. and 245 Nm. And the basic version with this engine just has a 5-speed "mechanics".

There are also two towing eyes on the back. A full-size spare wheel, like on the Prado, hangs in the rear overhang.

In addition to a manual box, the petrol SUV also has a 6-speed automatic. Production of such Fortuners for Russia will start in Thailand in February, "live" cars will appear by spring.

As expected, the gasoline Fortuner turned out to be cheaper than both its diesel version and the updated Land Cruiser Prado with the same 2.7-liter engine. So, Fortuner with manual transmission will cost 1,999,000 rubles for the Standard version, that is, at least 250,000 rubles cheaper than Pradik. The base includes front and knee airbags, air conditioning, fabric interior, steel 17-inch stamped wheels, halogen headlights, body-colored door handles, a light sensor, heated and electric mirrors, a rear cross-axle differential lock, a system of directional stability and trailer stabilization, initial audio system with Bluetooth and a third row of seats.

In the utility SUV class, sharing a frame with a pickup truck is commonplace. Fortuner is related to the Hilux, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is related to the L200, Ford Everest is fraternized with the Ranger pickup, Chevrolet Trailblazer is based on the Colorado, and Navara will be the basis for the new Nissan Xterra. Yes, the "cargo" chassis is reflected in the habits and comfort, but its endurance is more important.

A gasoline Fortuner with an automatic is 2,349,000 rubles, that is, 299,000 rubles cheaper than Prado with the same combination. There are already 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, rear sensors parking with a rear view camera, heated leather steering wheel, side airbags and curtain airbags, heated front seats, a media system with a 7-inch screen and 6 speakers, luggage rails on the roof.

In terms of external similarity, Fortuner is traditionally compared with Prado. If we consider only by external criteria, the similarity is quite close, but this applies to almost all cars from the brand's new line of SUVs. It is enough to pay attention to Hilux or RAV4. Learn more about the differences and similarities between Fortuner and Prado.

The appearance of the car is quite “aggressive”, but attractive and harmonious for an SUV. The design of the front immediately catches the eye: narrow headlights with stripes running lights, chrome grille radiator, a brutal wide bumper of complex shape, slightly pronounced arches, sills with steps, wheels for 17 or 18 inches.

Body metal is rust resistant. The lanterns are plastic, but, as practice shows, they do not become cloudy for a long time. Of the minuses - the low protection of the painted body from scratches caused by pebbles and sand flying from under the wheels. This shortcoming is easy to fix, just stick protective film on scratch-prone parts.

The Fortuner salon is Japanese-style: a complex angular shape of the center console, a practical, neat instrument panel, an ergonomic steering wheel, square rear seats. Interior trim materials: leather, metal, plastic and small wood inserts.

The cabin can accommodate up to seven people. But the owners of Fortuner note that only children can comfortably accommodate on the “backs”, these places do not differ in space.

No offense to other brands, but Prado - the most common on Russian roads SUV. It was developed on a platform universal for the manufacturer. The car came out stylish and luxurious, the bet on the European atelier, which was engaged in body design, justified itself: massive sills, vertical “stops”, wide headlights and a bumper, it turned out to be a real “male” car.

Prado is an off-road vehicle on a frame, which provides structural strength and high off-road confidence. Of the minuses, one can name the low protection of the frame from rust at the welding joints. Therefore, the owners recommend immediately treating problem areas with special formulations.

There are practically no complaints about the salon. High-quality leather, metal and plastic serve for many years. Of the minuses, we note over time cloudy Windshield and malfunctions of the climate control system.

Common features of Fortuner and Prado

Despite the fact that both cars are built on different bases, they have a lot in common. This applies to both appearance and internal technical characteristics. The fact that Fortuner is maximally interchangeable with spare parts from Prado which are widespread.

Both the first and second cars have a frame layout with independent suspension and all-wheel drive. On the gravel road, they perfectly "smooth out" the bumps. But because of the high center of gravity at speed, cars tend to collapse. This "disease" they have in common.

Differences and characteristics of Fortuner and Prado

  1. Fortuner has diesel engine 2.8 liters (177 horses). Prado in the base has Gas engine for 2.7 liters. and 173 horses.
  2. Torque Fortuner - 450 Nm, Prado - 241 Nm.
  3. Fortuner picks up speed perfectly, up to a hundred acceleration time is 10.8 s., The maximum speed reaches 180 km / h. At Prado performance characteristics not bad, but not as outstanding as the competitor. Given the mass of this SUV, acceleration and resource are somewhat lower than those of Fortuner.
  4. In terms of fuel consumption, Fortunet also surpasses its rival, 11 liters per hundred kilometers on asphalt, outside the city the figure drops to 7.3 liters. Prado, on the other hand, is distinguished by an unfinished crankcase ventilation system, rapid equipment contamination, which ultimately leads to an increase in fuel consumption.
  5. Ball bearings on Fortuner become unusable by 280 thousand kilometers, by the same time it may be necessary to replace the rear axle oil seal. Prado is more vulnerable in this sense, ball joints and the rubber bands of the levers will require repair by 250 thousand km. More often the Prado suffers from the front suspension.
  6. Brakes on Fortuner disc on both axles. The average pad replacement period is 90 thousand km. Steering tips are durable, they do not need to be changed for many years. At Prado brake pads not bad either, but due to the high weight of the machine, they have to be changed more often. But Prado's tips are the most weakness. They have to be changed often, as the resource of their work is small.
  7. By price category machines differ little if you focus on new versions. However, in Russia Prado has been “living” for a long time, and you can find cars of the first years of production at a price 750-800 thousand rubles. More recent models (from 2009) cost about 1.7-1.9 million rubles. Fortuner, on the other hand, reached our market relatively recently, so the price of a car is on average 2.6 million rubles.

Fortuner or Prado: what to choose?

According to its status, Fortuner occupies a niche slightly lower than Prado. But despite this, it looks a little more modern. If we take into account the comparison on the technical side, then both for the city and for off-road, this car noticeably wins in terms of its durability.

In terms of price criterion, both cars are approximately on the same level. When choosing Fortuner, it is important to remember the cost of maintaining this car. A significant item of repair costs may require a turbine for diesel engine and suspension arms.

When choosing Prado, you need to take into account much larger list possible breakdowns, however, in terms of the cost of repair and replacement of parts, the Prado noticeably wins. The market for parts for this car is so wide that the competition of sellers significantly affects the cost of parts that are sold on "every corner".

Invariably top the lists of the best-selling in Russia. They are found on roads in all regions and even off-road are often the preferred option. In 2017, two new models entered the Russian market: Fortuner and LC Prado. New items are strikingly different even in their appearance, show a completely dissimilar character on the road and beyond.

Objective characteristics

Although new Fortuner was created on the basis of a completely different car, yet it is more often compared with the LC Prado, since in the manufacturer's lineup these are the two closest SUVs in the class, which have almost the same performance. The first few months on the market showed that there would be no clear leader in this confrontation. However, according to their objective technical indicators these cars are very different.

Fortuner represents more budget version SUVs from Toyota, it is also lower in class, which is not surprising, because its cost is almost 500 thousand rubles less. However, this did not affect the appearance in any way: the design has become much more modern, the lines are more streamlined and at the same time aggressive. Its dimensions have practically not changed, but the clearance has grown solidly and the Prado is now losing: 215 for the Land Cruiser against 225 millimeters for the Fortuner. Off-road, this gives a solid advantage. The models can also be compared according to the main technical specifications, for LC Prado and Fortuner, respectively, they will be as follows:

  • maximum speed 168 and 180;
  • power 163 and 166 horsepower;
  • torque 246 and 245 units;
  • the number of valves is 16 for both models.

Independent front suspension and dependent rear, all-wheel drive make the cars quite worthy SUVs, and not just SUVs, which are plenty from other manufacturers. In terms of technical characteristics, none of the new products has a serious advantage, however, Fortuner shows itself to be more powerful car with increased fuel consumption, but also with significantly improved driving dynamics. While the updated Prado loses a little in throttle response and agility, however, it remains the most comfortable option for those who prefer style and safety.

What to choose

Auto experts are still of the opinion that the new Fortuner is more likely to compete in the market with Mitsubishi's Pajero than with the new Prado line. It is perfect for those who want to get a powerful, passable, roomy SUV without overpaying for it. At the same time, you will have to sacrifice the completeness of the configuration, interior design and the number of built-in electronic functions. The third row of seats will be very useful for those who like to travel in big company and family car owners.

The new LC Prado will have the same roomy 621-liter trunk, and the manufacturer will optionally offer a third row seats. However, more high class felt in the details: a traditional Toyota dashboard with excellent readability, high-quality sound insulation, ergonomic chairs and many electronic assistants. Four-wheel drive here manifests itself more gently, in general spring suspension classic type will make you feel quite comfortable both on country roads, and on asphalt extremely Low quality. But for off-road, this is more than an acceptable option: the angle of entry into obstacles with a clearance of 215 millimeters is 31 degrees, which is one of best performance in class today.
