Types of timber carriers

Trucks for transporting timber are divided into several types:

Different timber carriers are focused on the transportation of one or another type of cargo:

Technical characteristics of the main models

To deliver timber, Russian carriers often use the domestic KAMAZ or Ural, or they prefer foreign transport, such as Volvo and MAN. These manufacturers create the best tractors and trailers.

Ural has one of the most outstanding indicators of quality and reliability. Thanks to all-wheel drive, it will not get stuck on forest roads. And this is very important point, since a large number of objects for loading are located where there is no normal asphalt road. Such transport can carry cargo weighing up to 17 tons. The presence of lugs guarantees good stability on road. In the Urals, an assortment with a length of up to 27 meters can be accommodated.

KAMAZ is a classic of Russian bulky transportation. Most of these timber trucks are based on all-wheel drive models. They will easily pass through almost any terrain, even in the most severe blizzard. But their carrying capacity is slightly less than that of the Urals - about 12 tons.

The choice is influenced by many factors, from climatic and road conditions and cargo parameters up to the restrictions imposed by the legislation. For the export of assortment - forests of a standardized length of 2, 3, 4 and 6 m - they build timber trucks (English timber trucks or timber-loggers) on the basis of a chassis and a trailer and on the basis of truck tractor and a semi-trailer.

A chassis combined with a trailer is a specialized timber hauling solution, featuring maximum load capacity, maneuverability and cross-country ability, as the trailer follows the tractor almost trail after trail. Long 4-axle trailers allow you to transport a large volume. A manipulator mounted in the rear overhang of the chassis loads and unloads the chassis and trailer. The manipulator is an optional accessory. Taking into account the specifics of Russian timber harvesting, Scania has formed an offer of log trucks of the P, G and R series with wheel arrangements 6x4 and 6x6 and log trailers. When you look at photographs of half a century old timber trucks, it seems that over the years the concept of these vehicles has not changed much: after all, a timber truck is just a truck adapted for transporting logs.
However, modern timber trucks have gone far from their ancestors: they not only carry timber, but load it themselves. If we talk about the design, today the timber carrier consists of three main parts - the chassis, the crane and the superstructure.

CHASSIS


Last summer in Sweden international exhibition loggers - Elmia Wood 97. Chainsaws, cranes, skidders... Along with this equipment, timber trucks were also presented here. Our news story Scania companies, Doll and Loglift.
One of the central places at the exhibition was occupied by the Scania exposition. The Swedes have been specializing in the production of such equipment for more than a decade; to confirm this, they brought the "grandfather of timber transport" - a restored 1956 Scania-Vabis Regent.
The first mention of Scania timber trucks dates back to 1919-1920: five special tractors were built then. All their wheels were not only driven, but also controlled: it is no wonder that tractors could carry entire "trains" of four trailers - under forty tons in weight!
And in the seventies, at harvesting in Finland, with a permitted gross weight of 40 tons, an extra twenty to thirty tons were loaded onto timber trucks.
And so - day after day, along broken and bumpy forest roads.

Especially for these conditions, Scania developed a bonneted model in 1972, which had drive axles with wheel gears and strong frame.

One of the cars that has survived to this day survived two owners and traveled 600 thousand kilometers; during this time there was no serious damage!
Today, "a typical Scania timber truck" does not exist: the fact is that all trucks of this brand are assembled, as if from cubes, from standard elements. It all depends on the wishes of the client: for example, Indonesia ordered a machine with a 6x6 wheel arrangement, a very strong "construction" frame with double spars (C series), spring suspension and a simple cab with a low ceiling.
And next to this timber carrier stood a completely different one, clearly designed for not so harsh Western European conditions: a 6x2 wheel formula, a less powerful G-series frame, air suspension at the rear and a comfortable bonneted cab with berths.

The most well-known firm, producing cranes for timber trucks, is Loglift from Finland. Hydraulic cranes can be very different: shorter and longer, designed for different loads.

The specificity lies in the fact that Canadian logs can reach a diameter of 1.5 m, respectively, the mass of a loaded road train sometimes reaches one and a half hundred tons, and a height of 7-8 m.

An ordinary tractor, of course, will not pull such a mass. Until 1975, Hayes produced specialized equipment designed for forest roads. Many of their timber trucks are still alive today, but most of the tractors are Pacific and Challenger trucks. On highways, this super-technique is prohibited (for obvious reasons), therefore, for transportation over long distances, more traditional timber trucks with tractors from Internationa, Kenworth and other American brands are used.

Minsk car factory- is one of the honored and oldest manufacturers of transport for the transport of timber in the entire former Soviet Union. Timber truck MAZ with a hydraulic manipulator is a representative of special equipment used in logging and timber transportation.
