The suspension of the “off-road Kalina” was inherited from the “ordinary car”, but at the same time it received improvements: different shock absorber settings, new strut mounts, reinforced silent blocks and other front springs.

The steering has also been changed. Due to the increase in the dimensions of the wheels, the engineers had to reduce the steering rack travel, so that the turning radius of the "cross version" increased from 5.2 meters to 5.5 meters.

According to the official website, the cost of Lada Kalina Cross in all trim levels for April 2017 varies from 454,000 to 523,000 rubles, which retains the status of a budget car for this model.

It will not be a discovery for anyone that the boom of “SUVs” at AvtoVAZ has literally overslept. Design

Considering that almost the only direct competitor in the Russian Federation is Renault Sandero Stepway, the Cross-version of Kalina 2 has to take an example from him. In connection with the imitation of him, the domestic station wagon received a plastic body kit around the perimeter of the body, roof rails and a ground clearance that has grown by 23 mm (up to 208 mm in a “free” state and 185 mm when fully loaded), which makes it higher than many SUVs, including the most popular are the Ford Kuga or Kia Sportage, for example (198 and 167 mm, respectively). Improved together with colleagues in the alliance, the suspension led to an increase in ground clearance by 16 mm, and another 7 mm appeared after installing wheels with an increased radius - R15/185/55. They are soft enough for dirt tracks and moderately hard for asphalt.

Adaptation to Russian conditions

For Russian operating conditions, the station wagon is prepared well, but not at all by 5 points. It does not have and is not expected to have all-wheel drive, there is no steering wheel heating, and you need to pay extra for the Era-Glonass alarm button. But there is heating of the 1st row seats, side mirrors and windshield, a climate system, a spare tire on a 14-inch steel disk, and most importantly, a competitive, almost 20-centimeter ground clearance. Comfort

There are definitely more changes in the interior of Kalina Cross than in the exterior. The same coloration is on the rims of the side air ducts and on the insert on the steering wheel (keep in mind that the interior is also available in gray). The Cross chairs were equipped with a high leg cushion, a new frame and a denser filler, due to which the lateral and lumbar support improved (you no longer jump out of the chair when making sharp turns). On the one hand, the new seating configuration is good, but on the other hand, it is only good for people of a “standard” build, and those who are larger will have to adapt to the sidewalls supporting their backs. Unfortunately, there is no reach adjustment of the steering column, but its absence is slightly compensated by the increased volume of the seats.


In general, the impressions of the modified Kalina interior are positive. Without losing free space for riders and retaining the entire volume of the luggage compartment, it has become more practical and convenient. The amount of extraneous noise has significantly decreased - in order to achieve this effect, vibration and noise insulating materials were added to the car in the area of ​​\u200b\u200bthe floor and the engine compartment, rubber seals were installed in places where they simply did not exist before, and the door trim was improved at the points of attachment to them. body "hedgehogs" (and the "hedgehogs" too). An additional contribution to the acoustic comfort was made by sound-absorbing rear fender shields integrated into the rear wheel arches - from their supply, the noise from stones flying from under the wheels and lumps of dirt almost does not annoy.


In terms of reliability, Kalina Cross cannot be called an excellent student. Firstly, because in the "base" there is one airbag - for the driver. You have to pay extra for a pillow for the front passenger, and there are no other “airbags” at all. Secondly, there are only two head restraints for the rear riders by default - the third is offered only for a surcharge. And thirdly, of the electronic assistants, only emergency braking assistance systems (BAS) and brake force redistribution (EBD), and anti-lock braking system (ABS) are available. At least, this is what the unpretentious center console of Lada Kalina Cross claims, which the display without physical buttons does not shine even for a surcharge. Here, the main place is given to a modest radio with a miniature screen, an SD card slot, 4 speakers and a USB connector. Oh yes, there is also Bluetooth with Handsfree, and thanks for that. The Kalina Cross engine range today consists of two 1.6-liter engines that prefer exclusively 95th gasoline. The 8-valve unit produces 87 hp. and 140 Nm, working in tandem with a cable 5-speed “mechanics”, and a 16-valve engine develops 106 hp. and 148 Nm, combined with both the manual transmission and the VAZ 5-speed AMT “robot”. According to the manufacturer, the average fuel consumption, depending on the modification, ranges from 6.5 to 6.6 liters. per 100 km, but actual numbers may vary. After Kalina 2 lifted up, got a plastic body kit and got bigger wheels, it could not help but lose in dynamics. In order to compensate for the weighting, the VAZ team changed the gear ratio of the main pair in the 5-speed manual transmission: it was 3.7, and it became 3.9. Despite the fact that the new car is called a crossover, it can only be conditionally attributed to this category and to this segment. It would be more correct to call it a station wagon, which received an increased ground clearance, which from now on is an impressive 208 millimeters.

Plus, against the background of the usual Kalina, the pseudo-crossover is distinguished by plastic lining placed on the doors and around the perimeter of the body, factory protection for the gearbox and engine compartment, enlarged wheels, and so on.

Interesting optics can be seen on the front, as well as metal inserts and the traditional nameplate of the manufacturer. The radiator grille and false grille have also undergone quite serious changes, which made it possible to make the car more elegant and much more interesting than the original Kalina.

On the side of the photo you can see large black moldings and inscriptions saying the name of this car, which we will try to call nevertheless a crossover, despite the fact that it frankly falls short of this class. In a similar color design, they made a decor for the car seats. Now being inside has become more interesting due to the revived interior. By the way, the cabin has also become quieter, since now Lada Kalina Cross has additional sound insulation.

Inside the domestic crossover, the driver and four more passengers can easily fit. There is enough space on the back sofa, yet maximum comfort is provided when two are behind. Plus, the crossover cannot boast of a large supply of free legroom for rear passengers, and therefore it will be more difficult for tall and long-legged people here.

As for luggage space, in its usual position, the Lada Kalina Cross crossover can accommodate 355 liters of luggage. If you fold the rear row of seats, then the space will almost double - up to 670 liters of free luggage space.

Equipment

The maximum equipment will allow you to get in this budget crossover the entire set of options that AvtoVAZ can only now offer. But still, it is much more interesting to find out what will be included in the basic equipment. Many initially expected that Lada Kalina Cross would cost about five hundred thousand rubles. However, do not forget that it costs about the same. Therefore, the estimated price at the moment is from 400 to 450 thousand rubles.

Agree, the price tag is set interesting and promising. In particular, if we take into account the equipment that AvtoVAZ will offer already in the basic version.

Specifications

What domestic cars have always lacked is good and solid power plants. It just so happened that the development of engines is not the strongest side of AvtoVAZ. And borrowing engines from other manufacturers is not always successful.

Well, if we talk about the technical characteristics of the new budget crossover from the leading Russian automaker, they are frankly not impressive. Unfortunately, but it's true.

And the thing is that under the hood of the Lada Kalina Cross will be placed gasoline engine, the volume of which will be 1.6 liters. There is eight valves and only 87 horsepower power. For a crossover, of course, I would like much more.

As for the transmission, the manufacturer does not give alternatives here. This means that a weak motor will be equipped with a five-speed manual. What is true, the gear ratio of the main pair at the checkpoint was changed from 3.7, which the original Lada Kalina had, then the current 3.9.

Conclusion

So we got acquainted with the domestic pseudo-crossover, crossover or station wagon with increased ground clearance. Call the car whatever you want, but it will still remain a car built on the basis of Kalina and received not so global changes compared to the donor.

One way or another, but the project turned out to be interesting and promising. Now the segment of compact crossovers is developing incredibly rapidly. Plus, the market is clearly lacking a crossover for a small price. AvtoVAZ managed to compensate at least partially for the lack of representatives in this segment.

All anything, but frankly disappointed the motor. I would like to see modern, low-volume, but powerful and economical engines appear on Russian cars. But for now, we can only dream about it.

As a result, a very interesting development was spoiled by one serious drawback - the lack of horsepower.
