During the Soviet Union, the YuMZ-6 tractor was the most popular machine designed to perform all the necessary work in agriculture. And this is due to the fact that this machine is easy to operate, unpretentious in maintenance, can be aggregated with almost all available attachments, and, most importantly, has high reliability, both the power unit and other components and mechanisms.

Initially, YuMZ-6 was designed at the Minsk Tractor Plant, however, serial production was carried out by the Southern Machine-Building Plant, located in Dnepropetrovsk. This decision to produce a tractor made it possible to significantly save money when introducing the machine into mass production. The first tractor models left the assembly line of the plant in 1966 and in a fairly short time have proven themselves well as universal equipment. This tractor was based on the MTZ-5 and has many similarities with it, mainly related to the design.

Since 1974, this car has also appeared in Sweden under the name Volvo BM-700, since the documentation for this model was sold. But it is worth noting that this tractor was produced in Sweden in the form of a deep modernization until 1982, after which it was removed from the assembly line. In the USSR, the mass production of YuMZ-6 continued until 2001, as more productive models of tractors replaced it. The YuMZ-6 tractor belongs to the 1.4 class of traction special equipment.

Purpose

First of all, the YuMZ-6 tractor is designed to perform a full range of work in agriculture. Namely, it performs such processes as plowing the field, cultivating, preparing and processing the fertile soil layer before sowing, sowing and harvesting.   • A variety of mowers designed for mowing vegetation in rural areas. Mounted on the rear hitch of the machine.

Modifications

The entire YuMZ-6 tractor family consists of four modified versions, namely:

  1. Modification YuMZ-6L. The main differences of this modification from the base machine is a rounded radiator grille. In general, the tractor repeats almost all elements of the design of the MTZ-50 tractor. The power unit is driven by an electric starter.
  2. Modification YuMZ-6AL. This model is distinguished by a rectangular hood, modified brake mechanisms and a modified dashboard. The steering column was also subjected to changes, namely, it became possible to adjust the position in height and angle of inclination. As in the previous modification, in this one the engine is started using an electric starter.
  3. Modification YuMZ-6K. This version was designed specifically for some industrial work, namely the addition of several attachments for the dozer blade and excavation equipment (hydraulic arm, bucket and special side supports). Also, one of the differences from the base tractor is the absence of a rear attachment, which significantly limited the installation of attachments. But some time after the launch of this modification into mass production, it was decided to convert the tractor for agriculture.
  4. Modification YuMZ-6AK. This version left the production line for the first time 12 years after the release of the first samples of the base tractor (1978). When creating the modification, all the shortcomings were taken into account, and as a result, the tractor found a cab with a larger glazing area, which significantly increased visibility. At the same time, the tractor became similar in its cab to the MTZ-80. The hydraulic system has been improved and equipped with position and power regulators.


Specifications

The operating weight of the YuMZ-6 tractor has a value of 3200 kilograms. The design of the machine has a length of 4165 millimeters. The width of the rear wheels is 1884 millimeters. YuMZ-6 is equipped with a diesel four-cylinder power unit of the D-65 brand, which can produce a maximum power of 45.6 kilowatts or 62 horsepower. Under the hood of the YuMZ-6 is a D-65 diesel engine with a capacity of 45.6 kilowatts or 62 horsepower. Its maximum crankshaft speed is 1750 rpm. The basis for the creation of the YuMZ excavator was a wheeled tractor, which was produced in 1970-2001 by the Southern Machine-Building Plant. This tractor was intended for work in agriculture.

  • D-242 with a power of 62 hp (44 kilowatts) with a cylinder capacity of 4.75 liters.

Transmission parameters

The nine-speed gearbox, which is part of the YuMZ-6 excavator transmission system, contains several double gears. In addition, the system includes a dual-flow dry clutch. If there is a gearbox in the model, the number of gears doubles.

The machine overcomes slopes up to 10 degrees on the rise and speeds up to 32 km/h forward, up to 25 km/h back.

Chassis

The advantage of the unit, which makes it possible to optimize work, is that the undercarriage is wheeled, not caterpillar. The rear wheels act as driving wheels, and the front wheels act as guides. The working surface of the wheel is equipped with pneumatic tires, which are great for working on loose or uneven surfaces.

The steering mechanism consists of a worm, a helical sector and a hydraulic booster.

Hydraulic system

Includes two independent hydraulic drives with piston-type hydraulic cylinders. One of the drives is responsible for the operation of the bucket, handle and boom, the second - for the operation of the rotary mechanism, outriggers and bulldozer. Both hydraulic drives have a common filling tank.

Technical characteristics allow the YuMZ excavator to work in any weather with an air temperature from -40ºС to +40ºС. The technique is not afraid of an increased level of dust.

To prevent premature wear of the hydraulics and extend the life of the machine, regular cleaning of the bottom of the oil tank, timely replacement of filters, oil and wipers, checking the tightness of all components in the engine is necessary.

Existing modifications of the YuMZ excavator

The Southern Machine-Building Plant has developed several modifications of the YuMZ-6 tractor:

  • UMZ-6L is distinguished by a rounded radiator grill, outwardly the car resembled the MTZ-50. Has a starter motor.
  • UMZ-6AL had a rectangular hood, steering rack, adjustable in height and angle. The appearance of the dashboard was changed and improvements were made to the design of the brake system.
  • YuMZ-6AK with an adjustable hydraulic system (power and position control), with improved cab visibility. It was first produced in 1978.
  • UMZ-6KL. In this model, the manufacturer has installed standard mounts for a bulldozer and an excavator, and it is this modification that is considered as an excavator.
  • Excavators of this type are still successfully used in the production of construction and municipal works, in agriculture for cultivating and loading and unloading operations, in other industries for laying pipelines, cable lines, digging pits and other works.

    The YuMZ-6 tractor is a universal wheeled vehicle with a pulling force of 1.4 tons. Now this unit is no longer produced - the last copy rolled off the assembly line in 2001 (and the first in 1966). The tractor was called upon to help in agricultural work, in which it was very successful, earning the title of a legend in the Soviet agricultural industry. Many copies are successfully working to this day.

    The unit was developed at the Southern Machine-Building Plant (Ukraine, Dnepropetrovsk) based on the MTZ-5 tractor.     Engine

    The diesel engine of one of the two models (60 or 62 horsepower) with four cylinders in a row is not turbocharged. To start it, either a starting motor or an electric starter can be used (this depended on the engine version).

    Transmission

    The transmission type of this model is mechanical, nine speeds. One lever is used to control the gearbox of the unit drives and the gearbox (five-speed, with moving gears).     Hydraulics

    The hinged hydraulic system is made according to a separate-aggregate method. In the basic model, automatic control of hydraulic units is not provided.

    Modifications

    It should be noted right away that the letter “L” in the name of the tractor meant that the engine was started using a starting engine. If instead of “L” there was the letter “M”, then an electric starter was used for this purpose. The presence of the letter "K" indicated a cabin of increased dimensions.     The very first began to make the YuMZ-6L tractor. They were almost identical to the MTZ-5 and were very similar to the MTZ-50. The difference of this modification is a rounded radiator grille.

    The YuMZ-6AL variant is distinguished by the ability to adjust the steering column. It could be rotated at different angles and its height changed. Also, the changes affected the brakes and the hood - it became rectangular.

    The YuMZ-6K variant was intended to serve for industrial needs, so it no longer needed agricultural attachments (but later, when the model became the base one, it was returned). But there were mounts for the dozer blade and excavator bucket.

    In 1978, the YuMZ-6AK tractor was created, equipped with an improved hydraulic system, with force and position adjustment. In addition, this unit was distinguished by a new comfortable cabin, the viewing angle of which became much larger.

    For five years (from 1985 to 1990), the company produced a variation called YuMZ-6KL, featuring a large upgraded cab and automatic hydraulic adjustment. After 1991, until the beginning of this century, the same modification was produced under the names YuMZ-6AKL and YuMZ-6AKM.

    In the original version, the YuMZ-6 tractor was equipped with a diesel, four-stroke, non-compressor power plant, with a rated power of 65 horsepower. Two variants of engines can be installed on the tractor, one of them of the D65-N brand was equipped with a starting engine, and the D65-M engine is equipped with an electric starter of the ST212R1 brand. The maximum travel speed of the tractor is 24.5 km/h. The mass of the tractor with a constructive cab reaches 3200 kg, while the tractor track is adjustable within 1400-1800 mm, and the specific fuel consumption is 185 liters. In addition, the maximum overcome slope of the MTZ is no more than 10g.
