The success of the serial Toyota Prius with a hybrid power unit (about 360 thousand units have been sold since 1997) inspired designers to further develop in this area. The result of one of them is the "Lexus RX400h". The main goal of this development is to reduce fuel consumption and respect the environment. Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) is the name of the RX 400h power plant. It is based on a 3.3-liter gasoline V6 with a capacity of 211 hp. which is needed in order to move the entire hybrid system - without it, nothing would have happened. Power is transmitted to the wheels through a planetary gear, the gear ratio changes steplessly, as in a variator. An additional electric motor on the front axle is powered by a battery, where energy is stored, generated by a generator, which in turn is driven by the engine. Another, rear, electric motor helps, which, if necessary, makes the car all-wheel drive. When the RX 400h starts to brake, the corresponding energy is stored in the battery, which is located under the rear row of seats. By the way, the total power of the car, which is 272 hp, is added from the power of this battery (45 kW) and the motor. Thanks to this scheme, the car does not require constant recharging, the only thing you need is just to drive. - I met the Lexus RX400h directly on a test drive. However, I was well aware of its predecessor, the Lexus RX350. In the new model, I was primarily interested in how the gasoline engine and the electric motor interact.

At the beginning I rode at 400h as a passenger. It was difficult for me to tell by ear when the gasoline engine was running and when the electric engine was running. This could only be learned from the on-board computer display. In theory, the essence of a hybrid installation is simple: in order to reduce the consumption and harmful emissions of a gasoline engine, a significant part of the peak loads on the power unit (such as starting, acceleration) are “given” to electric traction. The battery acts as a buffer storage device, smoothing out surges in energy consumption. The gasoline engine, in addition to the "additive" with dynamic acceleration, compensates for the just spent ampere-hours.

I was convinced of this when I myself got behind the wheel of a Lexus. I insert the key into the ignition, turn it and ... nothing happens. But the word “Ready” appears on the current power indicator - having flashed the electronic “brains”, the 400h has already prepared the electric motors for the start. The selector is in Drive, I carefully step on the accelerator pedal. And again, silence. The car moves off, but the motor is not audible, since only the front electric motor is working now. I pushed the pedal a little more boldly - another traction electric motor is connected to the case, which sets the rear wheels in motion. And only when I drowned the pedal seriously, the petrol "six" came to the aid of the electric motors. Just hold on. The acceleration of the car is excellent! I especially liked the growl of the engine: the car is clearly ready to fight for leadership in its class.

On the track, the car showed good performance. She is frisky, accelerates instantly. On an impromptu off-road Lexus showed other indicators. On bumps, the car glides smoothly and resiliently. Nothing, never hurts, does not swing and rulitsya perfectly. Plus, it's eerily quiet. True, it is better not to use the 400h as an SUV. The reasons for the limited "all-terrain" Lexus lie in its dignity - the electric drive of the rear axle.

The element of this car is city streets. For example, for any engine, the most painful mode and the highest fuel consumption are traffic jams. But not for 400h! As soon as the speed drops, and the tail of the cars is shown ahead, the gasoline engine stalls, and the pushing in the queues to the traffic lights occurs only on electric traction. After a while, the motor starts up again, replenishes part of the electricity expended, and stalls again. So, if on an improvised off-road track and at high speed fuel consumption was 13 liters, then in the city it was only 9 liters (!). Savings on the verge of fantasy!

A huge plus Lexus — comfort. Everything has been done in the car so that the driver feels protected from various unforeseen situations. "Electronic brains" actively help with drifts and accelerations, making driving a car calm and smooth. People taller than 180 cm feel at ease in the rear seats. However, I didn’t like the noise of the wheels in the back seat in complete silence. But with a working audio system, this drawback is not felt. By the way, regular acoustics in the car is good. Feels like luxury.

We bet that when you look at this car and try to start the engine, you will decide that it will not start. The secret of the focus is simple - when you turn the ignition key, the electric motor starts, and it runs very quietly. The petrol engine starts when the battery needs to be recharged. Well, the algorithm for the operation of this couple, or rather, the triple (two electric motors on each bridge) is simple, but requires explanation (more on that below). But not to hear the rumbling of the engine by turning the key is indeed very unusual. As well as watching the maneuvers of the car in complete silence. Sometimes it seems that this car is from some parallel world, another life, even from another dimension, for nothing, which outwardly differs from the RX300 only in a different grille pattern, bumper and fog lights, slightly modified lights and a nameplate at the back.

The very name of the car does not mean anything, the word "Lexus" is synthetic and it smells of something fantastic in the manner of a movie about the future. Outwardly, the hybrid does not seem huge, but the spaciousness inside the cabin is frankly surprising. This applies equally to the driver's seat, front passenger and rear passengers. The salon is very cozy and solid, but not to say that it is luxurious. It is very pleasant to sit behind the wheel of this car. The car is friendly and comfortable. An experienced eye picks out a “Toyota” trace from the interior details (the shape of some buttons and controls). The instrument panel is "optitronic" with excellent readability in any light, whether it is bright sun or twilight. Moreover, the speedometer is designed in such a way that the speed readings are a purely intimate thing between the driver and the passenger (I asked a neighboring passenger if he sees the speedometer readings). Such a solution is found on some cars “sharpened” for sportiness. Additionally, there is a battery power indicator with the inscription Ready (ready) and on the move in front of the nose an animated picture showing the energy flows from the battery and the gasoline engine. And on the large display while driving, you can watch a funny movie that shows in detail the movement of energy flows between electric motors, a battery and a gasoline engine. On the move, the car matched my forecast, it is predictable, understandable and very smooth. If you need to accelerate, then the acceleration is very assertive and smooth, like on the latest "automatic machines". Switching is not felt, everything happens calmly. Apparently, the word "smooth" is the most accurate description for this car.

For daredevils, I recommend opening the instruction manual on page 360, where it is written in black and white that this car is not designed for off-road driving. It's like the law of conservation of energy: if it arrives somewhere, then it is sure to decrease somewhere. Got savings and better dynamics - lost in cross-country ability. And why, in fact, is it needed in a modern asphalt paradise. At its core, this is a front-wheel drive wagon, which sometimes becomes all-wheel drive, thanks to the rear electric motor. Still, this is a purely urban car, but in the city the Lexus RX 400h is like a fish in water. Still, it is not customary to drive in complete silence (apparently, this is why the expensive Mark Levinson audio system is installed. The characteristic quiet trolleybus buzz breaks the silence.

The brakes work perfectly, very informative, you can perfectly dose the force and control the braking. The steering wheel is quite sharp, it is possible to make it quieter for a high-standing car. Well, roughly speaking, claims - a minimum. True, I did not like the fact that the climate control was displayed on the monitor screen, it would be easier to have separate knobs. By and large, what will the buyer of this car get? And he will get a Lexus, with all the ensuing features. The highlight will be that it will be more dynamic and extremely economical at the expense of off-road capabilities. You choose.

Lexus! This name alone sounds like grace, reliability and commitment to the best classical traditions. Several of my friends have driven the RX300 and the reviews have always been very good. But this is a car of the last century, today everything should be better and, I'm not afraid of this word, cooler.

So, Lexus RX400h, a chic SUV with the latest hybrid engine. The car is excellent in every respect, so let me criticize it a little before showing admiration. 1) "Pockets" in the rear doors. To pull them out, something voluminous or long is hindered by the rear seat cushions. Not fatal, of course, because you can pull "it" out with the door open, but unpleasant. 2) Parktronic screen. It is quite possible that I am corrupted by the pernicious influence of the West, but it always seemed to me that the operation of parktronic (with or without a video camera) should be intuitive. And here on the screen we see randomly intersecting (!!!) lines, but where to move and what will happen in this case is not clear. I am ready to agree that after a detailed study of the instructions, you will recognize this function in the 400 as the best among all parktronics. Maybe. But I would like it to be easy to understand. 3) Rear air ducts. First, a few words about the back seat. It is wide, and there is so much space in the knees that “... eleven” people plus an accordionist can easily fit there. It's impressive. But if we sit in the back seat together, we will immediately notice that two things are sorely lacking. No, this is not what you thought, everything is much simpler. I would like to control the climate in the back seat, and the audio remote control would not hurt. 4) The parking brake pedal. Still uncomfortable. I looked at the picture of a right-hand drive car, there it is in its place.

Well, done with the “mandatory program”, and now I can freely express my admiration for the Lexus RX400h. God grant both you and me, dear reader, to earn so much money so as not to the detriment of the family to drive such a luxurious car. The smoothness of the ride is amazing. Banks in turns, surprisingly, are minimal. The electric power steering (fuel economy though) is tuned so well it's indistinguishable from a variable-effort power steering. High-quality finishing materials, space in width and, importantly, in height. Even these little things: the driver's cup holder is located on the left, just below the air duct. This is convenient, allows you to cool the drink, and there is no fear of spilling liquid on the central unit, as in the Toyota Avensis. The stability control system works just fine, it “extinguishes” the engine in time during a sharp turn. Now it’s very “glamorous” to scold everything electronic systems: they say they prevent them from making a 520-degree turn with simultaneous controlled skid and vertical take-off to show our coolness. I answer: if you are a pro, then the "eight" in your teeth, and - on the ring track. And in all other cases, you must think about safety. If not about their own, then about the safety of neighbors on public roads. So once again, the stability control works hard, that is, safely, which, along with a lot of airbags, makes the trip in the Lexus RX400h pleasant and calm.

I especially want to note the presence of an electric sunroof. Despite the dual-zone climate control, this gift of civilization is not superfluous. For example, I still remember with sadness and envy the hatch on my old car.

But the audio system upset me, although the music lover will be delighted with it. Changer for 6 discs, but only audio is read, a special warning in the instructions: CD-R, CD-RW, CD-ROM no way! Although, I'm sure audio CDs recorded on a computer will be readable. But MP3 is definitely not. The work of the "TEXT" key, as on all Toyotas, is not without drawbacks: there is no "creeping line", only the first 12 characters are displayed, to view the next 12, you must press the "TEXT" key for a long time. By the way, any radio, no matter how we tried to adjust the timbre, gives a very average sound. The cassette deck is equipped with Dolby noise reduction. True, I did not understand - Dolby B or Dolby C, the difference is huge, because the latter, on a film like Metal, is practically not inferior in sound quality to CD. Such a look at the audio system of an ordinary user. But connoisseurs will be delighted with the reproduction of branded discs on this Hi-End class system.

It was unusual to look at the instrument panel: instead of a tachometer, there was a device showing power (from 0 to 200 kW). I’m driving along the highway, I take my foot off the gas pedal, and the arrow instantly moves to 0! How do you like it? By the way, if the arrow drops below zero, this means recharging the hybrid nickel-metal hydride battery. A long time ago I read articles about different types of telephone batteries: nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride, lithium. The first two types of batteries last longer, but on one condition: if each charge begins only after the battery is completely discharged. Otherwise, as my friend did, they are “killed” in a couple of months. I did not make an excursion into history in order to doubt the durability of the Lexus battery, but to state once again that technology is moving forward, because the hybrid battery is constantly being discharged / charged. In addition to the 3.3-liter engine, there are two traction motors: rear, 50 kW, and front, 123 kW. All this provides exceptionally smooth traction throughout the entire range. It’s a real pleasure to roll the Lexus gently and leisurely, knowing that you can instantly accelerate, it performs perfectly when changing lanes into the vacant “window”. On the other hand, if the hunt is "sinked", then only your sense of security will serve as a limiter.

Some people ask: why buy a Lexus RX400h when there is a cheaper, pure gas Lexus RX350? Firstly, on the 400th it is quite possible to meet the consumption in the city of 9 l / 100 km, and this is with a 3.3 liter engine! Secondly, ecology, it is pleasant for people to feel that they do not cause much harm to the environment. Thirdly, the possession of a thing woven from the highest technologies.
