Vromos approached another Bulgarian firm called Overdrive to mask the utilitarian roots of the Hilux cab. As a result, the conventional pickup truck received power-adjustable seats taken from , a more ergonomic steering wheel and a combination of leather and Alcantara upholstery on the seats, door panels and dashboard. This is not the first six-wheeled Hilux, ever built, but this is by far the most luxurious of them all.

Although technical details have not been published, the fact that directly tells us that the power is most likely provided by a 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine, which generates 171 Horse power at 3,600 rpm and 358 Nm of torque from 1,400 to 3,200 rpm. The Hilux is also offered with a smaller 2.5-litre engine, but most European countries can only be paired with a 3.0-liter diesel engine.

Vromos did not share what it plans to do with the six-wheeled Hilux in the future. This instance can be a simple prototype or a test sample, the future exclusive extreme line of three-axle Hilux from Vromos.

Be that as it may, they saw the car, liked the idea!

Washers deliberated for a long time how much to take for washing two cars. If everything is more or less clear with the white pickup truck, then questions arose with the blue one. Count as a passenger car or as a truck? The car has six wheels. In the end, however, it was considered that Toyota Hilux Arctic Trucks AT35 6X6 - passenger car.

To say that both cars are visible on the road is to say nothing. Everyone was looking at us. Both pedestrians and drivers of premium all-terrain vehicles. In the dealership Toyota center They said it was a normal reaction. It is worth putting such a car in the salon, as it literally begins to attract the attention of visitors.

Where are these machines from? They are made by Arctic Trucks, founded in Iceland in 1990. Russian representation Arctic Trucks Russia opened in Krasnoyarsk ten years later. There they make cars under this brand.

Arctic Trucks is a kit, not a set of disparate technical solutions. You can’t buy something separately for an ordinary pickup truck, from the equipment that the company offers, and then install on their own. This is done intentionally so as not to produce collective farm tuning under a serious brand. Anyone who wants to buy such a car must come to official dealer Toyota and order a car. Any repairs are also carried out only at the service of an authorized dealer.

The model has several versions: AT33, AT35, AT37, AT38. They differ in the size of the wheels. The index after the letters AT indicates the outer diameter of the wheel in inches, which are designed for the structural elements changed or replaced during the preparation of the car.

The white four-wheeled pickup truck is a version of the AT35. It is the most popular among buyers. It accounts for 95% of sales. There are few changes to the car. This is a 45 mm lifted suspension, arch extensions, wheels with discs own production and reinforced front brackets for attaching the body to the frame. As a result ground clearance pickup has grown to 275 mm.

Toyota Hilux Arctic Trucks 6X6 pickups were first built in 2009. The main task that the designers faced was to increase the carrying capacity of the machine. Arctic Trucks has completely revised the design rear suspension and developed an additional frame. When building a six-wheeler, it is welded to the factory frame of a pickup truck.

The blue pickup in the photo is the first six-wheeled Hilux of the new generation built in our country. IN technical specifications means: the curb weight of the car is 2600 kg, and full mass- 3500 kg, but, according to rumors, the car is capable of taking on board more than two tons.

Six-wheelers work in Yamal, uranium mines, oil fields, in general, in those areas where conventional transport cannot pass. In general, there are a little more than 60 of them in the world, including cars of the previous generation.

In deep snow, this pickup truck rides literally like on an asphalt road. And you won’t understand how deep the snow is under the wheels - the car doesn’t care. At first I did not even touch the lock buttons. The pickup, like a huge snowmobile, floated over virgin soil. When the snow got deeper, I turned on the rear axle locks. I knew that somewhere under the snow are old car tires. So, Arctic Trucks simply does not notice them. I confidently continue to move forward. The four-wheeled vehicle also moves no less confidently on virgin soil, but the steering wheel needs to be worked a little more. IN deep snow there is some wiggle.

The power units of the machines are standard. This is a 177-horsepower diesel engine, paired with a 6-speed automatic. Off-road, and on the track, the motor is more than enough. Although driving on such machines is absolutely not pulling. The tires are not racing. And if in the snow they behave perfectly, then when braking on asphalt, you need to be careful and slow down in advance. Finally, the most important thing is the prices. A test four-wheeled pickup truck costs 3,500,000 rubles. Exclusive six-wheeled Hilux - 11,675,000 rubles. Well, this is worthy of a dream!

They literally rode in circles around the Urals, hard-fought in the virgin lands, in Chukotka.

And yes, I was quite surprised myself. The car was really running. And she was driving at such a speed that the caterpillar MTLB could not catch up with us on the Egvekinot-Anadyr section, where wheeled vehicles do not travel in principle.

I had a record machine, I miss it.

And here is the news - the production of Toyota Hilux AT38 6x6 has begun in Russia and the first copy can be driven here in Moscow.

In the comments on Instagram and Twitter, some experts wrote: “pure show-off!”, “What’s the point in an Arctic pickup truck?”, “It doesn’t drive by itself!”, And therefore some explanations need to be given.

The operating experience is certainly not limited to our first ascent to Anadyr.
Arctic Trucks has made hundreds of 6x6 vehicles and their modifications with 44" wheels over the years. This is a natural mass production and that's important.
In Russia, Arctic Trucks has the status of an automaker, they assign their vehicles VIN and issues its own TCP, for example.

These machines are not toys and show-offs, but quite workhorses in conditions that many of us do not even approximately imagine - this is the Far North, Iceland, Greenland, Canada or the very south - Antarctica. Well, Russia, of course.

It is these machines that have been driving tens of thousands of kilometers a year across Antarctica for many years in any direction from the coast to the South Pole, to the Earth's Cold Pole, to the South Pole of Inaccessibility, etc.

And if you think a little about the problems of autonomy in such expeditions, multiplied by many years of experience, it will become a little clearer about reliability engineering solutions from Arctic Trucks. That is why we made cars at their time, and not in the service “I will now put 38 wheels for you at Ivanych, no problem.”

Hence, another important caveat in this review of the Hilux AT38 is that there is no point in testing this machine outside of hard snow conditions, it is made for winter, for polar operating conditions.

But we don’t have winter yet, unfortunately, but I really want to see it!
So let's go at least ride in the sands.

For understanding overall dimensions and the degree of modification of the car.
On the left - 44", then our version of 38" and the stock kid on the right.

In total, I drove almost 500 km on it and everywhere, for obvious reasons, the car attracted attention, people literally climbed out of the windows to take pictures. In Moscow, this is certainly a show car.

The car quietly travels along the Moscow Ring Road at 100 km / h, it is easy to control, easy to steer. This is actually a special ideology - despite the huge wheels, the car must be controlled as regular car, I confirm that it was so here and on Patrol.
The difference with the four-wheeled Patrol - Hilux at speeds above 80 km / h a little podkolbashivat, two bridges at the back affect.
The dynamics are quite acceptable, starting from a traffic light, accelerating from 60 to 100 km / h - everything makes you feel comfortable in the city.

But experienced polar bears are very interested in how everything works.

Luckily you don't need a lift :)

The car now has tires already known to many own development Arctic Trucks 38x15.5
This is a wide soft winter tires, in fact, because of what the car rides so successfully in the snow.
Comparison with winter tires 33":

Transmission.
Front left independent suspension, behind two continuous bridges.
But first of all, the frame - it has been replaced with a reinforced one, lengthened and modified.
Both rear axles hang on special levers and Panhard rods.

The lift is minimal - 90 mm suspension and 20 mm body.
Rear axle - regular Hilux axle, middle bridge- development of Arctic Trucks based on the through axle from Mercedes-Benz.

In H2 mode, both rear axles are driven, with a center differential between them.

Transfer box standard, hardwired four-wheel drive H2-H4-N-L4.

There are three ARB lock switches in the cabin, everyone immediately thought that these were interwheel locks, but in fact it works like this.
1) blocking two at once cross-axle differentials 2 and 3 axles
2) blocking center differential 2 and 3 axles
3) interwheel differential lock 1 axle

So it's a fair 6x6.
On the sand pit, we could not create a situation in which the car would get stuck.
Of course, sand is not snow, and there are no such slides in the tundra, but nevertheless.

On the terrain, the car goes quite softly, they affect big wheels and soft tires.
Suspension travel is minimal, yes, but more in the north is not needed in general.

The body is reinforced, elongated, almost 2.40 m. Load capacity - 2 tons. Yes, it's a truck!
Oh, how we missed this in the Arctic. What if it's a trailer? Dream.

What else?
Engine, boxes - all standard, 3.0 TD, automatic.
The main pairs have been replaced by 4.88 - hence the dynamics and momentum on the bottoms.
The fuel tank is standard, but can be installed with a volume of 200 liters.
Total length - 6.1 m.
Turning radius - 10 m versus 6.4 m for a regular car.
Minimum ground clearance - 322 mm.

Curb weight is a mega parameter.
Stock patrol - 2450 kg. In expedition preparations, we were weighed before being loaded onto the plane in Norilsk - it was about 3300 kg.
Hilux in the already modified version of the AT38 weighs 2610 kg - this is a very, very good indicator.
