In November 2013, Russia started accepting applications for the new BMW X5 (index F15). The third generation of the famous "X5" was officially presented during the Frankfurt Motor Show, and its production was launched in the USA, where, as in Europe, sales of new items began a little earlier. Initially, only three modifications of the American-assembled crossover were offered in Russia, but in May 2014, several more versions were added to them, the production of which has already been launched at the Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad.

The quality of the materials used in the interior decoration has become even better, but the fit of some elements, in particular the glove compartment lid, leaves much to be desired. Visibility from the driver's seat has not changed much, since the glazing scheme has remained practically unchanged, but the side mirrors have become slightly smaller, which increased the volume of blind zones.

The layout of the cabin is still five-seater with the possibility of ordering the installation of two more third-row seats for passengers whose height is not higher than 1.5 meters. The level of equipment has become noticeably better: front seats with electric adjustment and settings memory are already available in the database, a 10.25-inch display flaunts on the center console, and behind additional fee you can install dual-zone climate control and an entertainment system with two monitors for rear passengers.

The usable trunk space in the third generation of the crossover is noticeably larger than that of its predecessor. In the standard state, the trunk holds 650 liters, but due to the rear row of seats, folding in a ratio of 40:20:40, it can be increased to 1870 liters, not counting the niche under the floor. The upper flap of the trunk lid is equipped with an electric drive, controlled both from a button in the cabin and from a key fob.

Specifications. Initially, the engine line for the 3rd generation BMW X5 offered only three options for the power plant, but after the launch of production in Kaliningrad, three more engines were added to it, which significantly expanded the options.

  • Basic version xDrive25d received an in-line 4-cylinder 2.0-liter turbodiesel under the hood with direct injection and a 16-valve timing, which is capable of producing up to 218 hp. power at 4400 rpm and provide up to 450 Nm of torque in the range from 1500 to 2500 rpm. With the younger engine, the X5 will be able to make a starting jerk from 0 to 100 km / h in an acceptable 8.2 seconds, while the upper speed limit is limited to 220 km / h. As for fuel consumption, the xDrive25d modification eats up about 5.9 liters of fuel on average.
  • The Germans equipped xDrive30d with an N57 D30 in-line diesel engine with six cylinders of 2993 cm³ and a return of 249 hp. at 4000 rpm. The engine is no longer new, well-proven, but has undergone major modernization. In particular, the injection pressure was increased (from 1600 to 1800 bar), the mass of the motor was reduced and the operation of almost all electronic controls was reconfigured. We also note that the diesel is equipped with a new turbocharger with variable geometry, third-generation battery injection and Bosch piezo injectors. The engine torque has been increased to 560 Nm at 1500-3000 rpm, which will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds, while the upper speed limit will be 230 km/h. According to the manufacturer's calculations, the average level of fuel consumption this motor is at around 6.2 liters.
  • The same diesel engine, but with a triple turbocharging system (N57S), will decorate the engine compartment of the xDriveM50d modification. In this case, the maximum power is about 381 hp. at 4000 - 4400 rpm, and the peak torque falls at around 740 Nm in the range from 2000 to 3000 rpm. Such characteristics will provide the crossover with impressive traction, allowing it to make a starting spurt from 0 to 100 km / h in an almost record-breaking 5.3 seconds for the class, but at the same time it will require at least 6.7 liters of fuel for every 100 km of track.
  • Between the two engines described above, there is another diesel modification - xDrive40d, which received a 6-cylinder 3.0-liter power unit with a capacity of 313 hp, developed at 4400 rpm. Like previous engines, this engine is equipped with direct fuel injection and a turbocharging system. The peak torque of the unit is 630 Nm and is kept in the range of 1500 - 2500 rpm, which allows you to accelerate the crossover from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.1 seconds or reach a maximum speed of 236 km / h, spending about 6.4 liters fuel in the combined cycle.

There will be gasoline engines in Russia, but only two:

  • The role of the base will be performed by the unit designed to modify the xDrive35i. It has 6 cylinders with a displacement of 3.0 liters (2979 cm³), a 24-valve timing, direct fuel injection and a turbocharging system. Max Power the younger gasoline engine is 306 hp, developed at 5800 rpm, but the peak torque falls at around 400 Nm, held in the range from 1200 to 5000 rpm.   • Gasoline engine N63B44 with 8 cylinders V arrangement and an advanced twin turbo system, Twin Turbo is designed for the US-only “X5” xDrive50i. Working volume this engine is 4395 cm³, and its equipment includes a direct fuel injection system, an air-to-water intercooler, a Valvetronic valve train system and twin scroll turbochargers. The gasoline engine is capable of producing up to 450 hp. power at 5500 rpm and 650 Nm of torque at 2000 - 4500 rpm, while spending about 10.4 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. As for the dynamic characteristics, with this power unit the crossover is capable of accelerating to a maximum of 250 km / h, while spending no more than 5.0 seconds on the “starting jerk”.

All available motors are fully compliant environmental standard Euro-6, and in the "Eco Pro" mode, they are able to save almost 20% of fuel due to a "cunning" technological solution: at speeds in the range of 50-160 km / h, when the gas pedal is fully released, the gearbox automatically switches to neutral, transferring the crossover to driving coasting. The manufacturer promises another 5% savings due to a “smart” tie with navigation system, which, knowing the configuration of the route, will regularly tell the driver when it is necessary to slow down so that they do not have to resort to braking before turning.

The 8-speed ZF8HP automatic transmission, which first appeared in 2008 on the BMW 760Li sedan, was chosen as the gearbox for all three engines. The "Automatic" was seriously improved by rewriting the control program, reducing its weight and reducing friction losses by 4%.

According to the developers, the BMW X5 is the founder of the SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) class: sports cars For active rest, and therefore, to maintain the appropriate image, driving tests are held in cities that previously hosted the Olympics: Atlanta in 1999 (E53), Athens in 2006 (E70), and the F15 was “run in” in Vancouver.

In terms of driving performance on paved roads, the crossover added practically nothing, but the off-road patency of the car has noticeably decreased. The design of the crossover chassis has remained the same: an independent double wishbone suspension system is used at the front, and a multi-link design is installed at the rear in the basic version and air suspension in the top equipment versions. There were no changes at all: both suspensions had a slightly changed geometry, shock absorbers were retuned, and most components were lightened by increasing the proportion of aluminum.

Then new, much more powerful engine options appeared.

The first generation of the car was equipped with independent suspension and all-wheel drive with electronic torque distribution. The mechanics very cleverly arranged the system: when the wheel slips, it “slows down” it and at the same time gives greater moment to the rest of the wheels. This explains the good cross-country ability of the car.
The rear axle was equipped with specialized elastic elements based on pneumatics. Electronics allows you to maintain the clearance height even with a significant impact of static load forces.
The braking system also has significant differences from " simple cars". Significantly larger brake discs plus an emergency braking control system allows you to increase the braking force. The system is activated by fully depressing the pedal. Also, this off-road vehicle has an additional speed control system in the region of 11 km / h when leaving an inclined plane.

Did all this make it possible to get an SUV from a crossover? Probably not, experts say. The BMW X5 E53, having received many good qualities, still fell short of a “full-fledged all-terrain vehicle”. Instead of a frame, the designers planned a load-bearing body, which naturally affected all the qualities of the car. The Germans also “overdid it” with automatics: when entering a hill or falling into a rut, it does not allow you to switch to downshift, and with sharp turns, the car can be brought to the desired course only by the steering wheel, the gas pedal in this case “falls into a stupor”.

Since 2003, obeying the laws of the market, the Germans have carried out a significant restyling of the E53.

  • The all-wheel drive has been completely redesigned. The new xDrive system has been improved to an incredible extent: electronics "learned" to analyze in real time the status pavement, the steepness of turns and, commensurate with the data mode of motion, independently redistribute the torque between the axles. As a result, lateral rolls and damping are automatically adjusted.
  • The V-shaped gasoline engine was equipped with a Valvetronic system designed to regulate the valve stroke, and a soft intake system was added to the bargain. The designers worked on the bumper and headlights. The dimensions of the car have changed somewhat. So, the length of the body has increased by 20 cm, which, in general, is significant. Accordingly, the interior volume has increased, allowing the X5 to be made seven-seater, with the presence of a third row. Some “extra” bells and whistles were removed from the cabin, and the dashboard was replaced. The appearance of the car has become somewhat softer due to the plastic body kit.
  • By aerodynamic performance X5 E53 achieved good performance, the Cx coefficient is 0.33, which is practically perfect result. New sensors and systems were added to the electronics. Incredibly expensive spare parts, as well as crazy fuel consumption (with the declared 10 liters, on a test drive, the consumption was twice as high as the norm) - the price for the "chic" and elegance of the car, automatically transferring the owner to the category of successful businessmen.

Be that as it may, it was the BMW X5 that was recognized in 2002 as the best all-wheel drive car in Australia. And after 3 years, this title was confirmed by hitting Top Gear. Other major brands followed BMW's lead, resulting in Porsche Cayenne, Range Rover Sport, Volkswagen Touareg.

Surprisingly, the more forced "M-motor" has fewer problems due to the lower operating temperature. He has at least valve stem seals after a year, they don’t start pouring oil into the cylinders, and therefore, the “oil burner” does not grow so rapidly, it does not die and the catalyst does not overheat.

But in general for high performance you have to pay in the most literal sense of the word. Because of the hellish working conditions, the turbines themselves do not withstand, the control systems fail, the oil supply hoses coke, and the plastic of the intake manifolds does not withstand.

Yes, and the notorious direct injection nozzles are already eight, not six, and they work in harsher conditions, and the piezoceramics are sensitive to temperature. Problems are delivered by the timing with two thin “bicycle” chains in the drive, which break and jump easily and naturally when worn.

In short, without serious intervention in the design, such a motor does not live happily ever after. Here, even lowering the operating temperature helps weakly due to the layout features. The oil thermostat does not cope with the oil temperature at all, and at the same time, the plastic parts of the oil system and pipe seals do not withstand.

Diesel engines are a joy for owners of the X5 E70, because the pre-styling models had a very reliable diesel M57 series, which is deservedly considered one of their best engines in recent years. Although on machines with two turbines, oil leaks from the turbine supply pipes are frequent, and the resource of timing chains above 160 thousand km is no longer guaranteed, although it can reach up to 250 thousand. particulate filter can cause trouble, it sometimes does not regenerate due to errors, short runs and engine underheating, it is expensive and it is also not removed for a penny.

The more “fresh” motors of the N 57 series on restyling are completely new, but also quite strong. And even the piezo injectors here are distinguished by a calm character. The forcing margin is even higher. Due to the novelty, the motors do not cause much trouble, and, most likely, they will not differ much from the M 57 in operation.

What to choose?

Unlike the first X5 in the back of the E53, there are still enough “live” E70s, despite the more complex design of the electrics. If you buy a car after a caring owner who looked after it not according to the rules, but according to conscience, then there are good chances that the options with N 52, N 55, M 62 engines and diesel engines will be in full running condition.

As for other electrical and suspension chores, they are almost mandatory.
