The 2GR engine was developed in 2005 as a replacement for the 3MZ-FE, based on the 4 liter engine, by reducing the piston stroke from 95 mm to 83 mm. Faults, 2GR problems and their causes

1. Oil leak. Kia Sorento is a mid-size crossover named after the resort town of the same name in southern Italy. The car was put into series production in 2002. This engine was installed on Chrysler 300 and 300M, Concorde, Intrepid, Pacifica, Prowler and Sebring models, on Dodge Magnum and Charger, Avenger, Challenger.

Two generations of 3.5 V6 engine

In 1993, Chrysler "upgraded" the middle-aged 3.3-liter V6, which, despite its far from the most advanced design with one camshaft on both halves of the block and a pusher valve drive, was produced in parallel with the new engine.

During the update, variants of the V-shaped “six” appeared with working volumes of 2.7, 3.5 and, in the second half of the 2000s, 4.0 liters. The lower V6 and the new upper had only one thing in common - the oil pan.

However, in fact, the 3.5-liter Chrysler engine (engine designation EGN, EGE, EGF, EGJ, EGG, EGK) is based on the same cast-iron block from the 3.3-liter V6. The piston stroke of 81 mm has not changed, the cylinder diameter has been increased from 93 to 96 mm. The compression ratio was increased to 10.4. Engine power was 214 hp. at 5800 rpm, and the moment is 300 Nm at 2800.

The block heads, of course, were designed from scratch: each has one camshaft. Each cylinder had two intake and two exhaust valves. The front wall of the block has been modified to accommodate an oil pump and timing drive with overhead camshaft pulleys. The timing drive is not carried out by a chain (as in 3.3- and 3.8-liter engines), but by a belt, which also drives the cooling system pump. By the way, the 3.5-liter engine is designed in such a way that a broken timing belt does not cause a collision of valves and pistons. The first generation motor had three ignition coils, each of which ignited two candles at the same time (while one of the candles sparked not during the compression stroke).

Also, the 3.5-liter engine received an intake manifold with a mechanism for changing the length of the intake tract. Interestingly, in the first generation, that is, from 1993 to 1999, the 3.5-liter engine was equipped with a double intake manifold, each half of which supplied air to its own half of the V-shaped block. Accordingly, there were also two throttle valves on such engines.

Chrysler's first generation 3.5-liter V6 uses two drive belts for attachments without tensioners. Their tightness must be checked and adjusted manually.

In 1998, the 3.5-liter engine was upgraded. Since then, its block has been cast from an aluminum alloy. In this case, the block was lined with cast-iron sleeves. The compression ratio was reduced to 10.1. Each spark plug received an individual coil. Engine power was raised to 232 - 250 hp. at 6400 rpm (and about 339 Nm at 3900 rpm) due to improved cylinder ventilation. The diameter of the throttle (this time the only one) was increased, the diameter of the intake valves was also increased, and the "depth" of their opening became greater. The intake tract, which is now made of a plastic composite, has been significantly optimized. In the early 2000s, the power-to-weight ratio of Chrysler's V6 outperformed its competitors, especially since the 10.1 compression ratio American engine was designed to run on 92-octane gasoline.

The production of this engine was discontinued in 2010, it was replaced by a new 3.6-liter unit of the Pentastar family.

Problems with Chrysler's 3.5-liter V6

Both generations of the 3.5L engine, both cast iron and aluminum block, have a few inherent problems. In particular, the oil channels in the block have a small cross section, the performance of the crankcase ventilation system is insufficient, the cooling system pipe passing under the intake manifold often leaks. In general, the American V6 was created quite thoroughly and is devoid of dubious decisions. But after years of operation, it turned out that this motor can also be broken.

The 3.5-liter Chrysler V6 is extremely demanding on the quality of the oil and the frequency of its replacement. This motor is literally quite hot, and therefore the oil is of low and even medium quality, it quickly loses its properties. Poor crankcase ventilation also creates problems, due to which oil mist falls on the surfaces of the crankcase that are not washed by oil in the form of strong varnish deposits and oil clots. These clots get into the oil and clog the channels that supply oil to the main and connecting rod bearings. As a result, Chrysler's 3.5-liter V6 either starts to knock or simply jams. This problem is known both in the homeland of the power unit and in the CIS. Unfortunately, the rotation of the liners and jamming, accompanied by a breakage of the connecting rods, is a very common misfortune that accompanies this motor on all the cars on which it was installed.

You can extend the life and resource of the EGN motor by reducing the intervals for replacing high-quality oil to 5,000 km and performing periodic (once every 50,000 km) cleaning of the valve of the crankcase ventilation system.

Often on a 3.5-liter engine, a leak can be observed from a tube supplying antifreeze to the “stove” radiator. The tube runs under the intake manifold - it is very difficult to get to it. The tube (part number 04792185AC) may simply be corroded, or antifreeze may be escaping along its o-ring (06505692AA).

Chrysler's 3.5-liter V6 coolant pump impeller is molded from plastic and is less likely to suffer from cavitation, but can fail due to rust and sediment that builds up in antifreeze. Problems with the pump are accompanied by a high temperature of the engine and, in the most advanced cases, overheating. Antifreeze in this engine must be changed at least once every 5 years. It is better to change a worn pump immediately along with a thermostat. If, after replacing the antifreeze and pump, the engine overheats or the antifreeze leaves, it is necessary to conduct a leak test of the cooling system: it is not uncommon for a cylinder head gasket to leak on a 3.5-liter V6 Chrysler.

Rarely, but there are cases of failure of the control unit of this engine. This is due to one procedure that is prohibited on this motor. Namely: the 3.5-liter V6 Chrysler cannot be turned with a starter with the ignition coil disconnected from the spark plug. If the coil shorts to ground, all ignition control circuits in the control unit will burn out.
