Toyota's "rogues" performed more than worthy in off-road categories. The modernized Land Cruiser 200 threatens to take over the baton, ready to push the authorities aside with its elbows and having a far from illusory chance of appearing among the leaders of our off-road rating. Will it work?

We are heading to the Dmitrovsky training ground driving a 2013 model. Bloated with feeling self-importance you can see the updated Land Cruiser 200 a mile away. It is easy to distinguish it from a pre-restyling SUV by its numerous changes to the exterior. With a clearer lensed look of the head optics, into which xenon lamps for low and high beams and chains of LED daytime running lights are implanted, a modified front bumper, revised rear lights, chrome door handles and side moldings, the giant looks weightier, more elegant, and “premium”.

Our test is not entirely ordinary: as a rule, we pit several direct competitors from different brands against each other, but here... “My grandmother smokes a pipe, black, very black tobacco. My grandmother smokes a pipe in a severe sailor’s puff.” Old friend! The pre-restyling “cruiser” with a diesel twin-turbo V8 was tested by ORD back in early 2010. Since then, he has managed to put more than 45,000 km on the wheels without dying the death of a brave press-park car. A seasoned man, we needed him not to expose him as a “rascal” with a shiny, fresh coat of paint, but to look at the new through the prism of the old.

Position height

The fit in both cruisers is equally excellent. The high-mounted seat cushion, even in its lowest position, provides excellent visibility, but drags with it the slightly sloping position of the huge steering wheel, the upper and lower sections of which are inlaid with wood. The motif of the massiveness of individual external body parts, for example, hefty bulging headlights, is picked up by the interior. What are they worth alone? door handles, which not every palm can grasp! And the Toyota-style large buttons on the dashboard with large symbols are good - you “get into” them without being distracted from the road. The center console is beautifully designed, from the heart, with expensive-looking black inserts a la piano lacquer finish. But what doesn't hold up well to criticism is the climate control. To operate the direction of flow and adjust the fan speed, you have to turn to the inflorescence of the touch monitor. It is extremely doubtful that the ergonomics of the “weather” have undergone positive changes during the update process.

The thoughtfulness of the mechanism for folding out the benches of the third row, which in the stowed position are suspended along the side walls of the trunk, and the capacity of the cargo compartment are no less pleasing than the expected amount of space in the second row. But the disadvantages are also obvious: due to the double-leaf fifth door, the loading height is high, and there is only enough legroom in the “gallery” for short people or children. “My grandmother smokes a pipe and loves fire rum...” Toyota diesel is a great force! The V-shaped “eight” 1VDFTV with two turbochargers develops 615 Nm and in the sprint up to 100 km/h is not inferior to the latest gasoline unit volume of 4.6 liters even for a fraction of a second. Small but noticeable vibrations at idle, powerful traction in a fairly wide rev range, a thoroughbred thunderous voice... Serious guy! But if the “two hundred” on heavy fuel does not let you forget that you are driving an SUV, then the progress of the gasoline modification is comparable to a silky step large sedan. The V8 wakes up with a dull, satisfying roar, but subsequently the powerful sound insulation effectively drowns out the slightly disappointing high-frequency rumble, devoid of pulsating bass notes. Imperceptibly changing gears, the automatic transmission is nevertheless always ready: it reacts quite quickly to the movement of the gas pedal and does not force you to wait when changing to low gears.

Where the “cruiser” has few equals is the colossal energy-intensive suspension. While driving a 200, you can safely forget about shock absorber breakdowns, unless you accidentally get a mine under your wheel. There is, however, a trembling of the impressive unsprung masses on bumps of various sizes, but it is completely unobtrusive.

Diesel in combination with automatic transmission is no less invigorating. But the ride of the pre-restyling car is a little rougher, a little stiffer.

Although it is believed that the owner of a car of the Land Cruiser level a priori has the opportunity to feed his pet to its fullest, we could not help but pay attention to the fuel consumption. Gasoline Land Cruisers are unlikely to be included in the list of economical models, but with the new engine, the chances of finding favor with tight-fisted owners have increased. We managed to lower the mixed consumption below 20 liters and keep it around 18.5 liters, which is acceptable for a mastodon with a curb weight of 2585 kg. But a diesel Toyota is a trucker's dream! Even in dense traffic jams, the on-board computer monitor did not show more than 14.0 liters per 100 km.

At the limit and beyond

If the stand that determines the suspension travel before hanging at the Dmitrovsky training ground could speak, it would cry out for mercy: the support travel, it seems, will soon almost be selected, but the Land Cruiser does not give up. Our dear and permanent measurer Dim Dimych scratches his head in bewilderment - the updated SUV, without any modifications, is stunning with an articulation result of 600 mm. The diesel “200” has a maximum suspension travel of 560 mm, which is due to a noticeably heavier front end. The weight distribution along the axles of the modernized LC 200, according to our measurements, with a spread of 1-10 kg, corresponds to a pre-restyling car with an old V8 4.7 engine.

The strongest sheet under the crankcase of the engine and automatic transmission will apparently withstand a lot. The front arms are located horizontally. The rear axle housing can stall the “cruiser”; the low-mounted mountings of the rear shock absorbers are capable of clinging to the “landscape”.

“All the pirates in the world are afraid of her and are rightfully proud of her...” The boiling of the ninth, tenth and all subsequent waves raised by a diesel “cruiser” in a small lake drowned out the savory “grunt” that the number frame issued under the onslaught of the elements. If you do not abuse the high air intake and do not overtake the “wave,” then drowning the license plate will become one of the few troubles that can befall you when storming a ford. On deep, wet soil, which is typical for central Russia in the autumn off-road, the main limiting factor will be the weight of the car. With the diesel Kruzak, the situation is twofold - the heavy torque allows you to use a downshift only in extreme cases, but due to the significant “trim” on the nose of the Toyota, standard tires pushes through the rut. Updated car stuffed with electronic “assistants” that partially make life outside the asphalt easier. We liked the Multi-terrain Monitor system with four cameras. It is impossible to overestimate the benefit of the “all-seeing eye”, which allows you to notice in time a boulder that is dangerously close to a wheel, or just reinforcement sticking out of the ground. Succumbing to the trends of off-road fashion, the company introduced the Multi-terrain Select system, reminiscent in its operation of Land Rover's Terrain Response. In L4 mode, the electronics adapt to one of five types of surfaces, plus the ability to lock the center differential. For slalom among the trees, there is also a function such as Off-road Turn Assist, which brakes the inside rear wheel when turning at speeds of up to 10 km/h. Another valuable feature is the upgraded Crawl Control (now with five speed settings), which assists on descents and ascents with low gear engaged and up to 25 km/h. And yet the problem of impressive mass does not disappear. In order for power over the world to mean not an ugly social reality, but fearlessness in the face of difficult off-road conditions, the car will need to be modified - at least, installing more “muddy” tires.

The front and rear axles of the Land Cruiser 200 are equipped with free bevel differentials (D), their locking is simulated by operation brake mechanisms(TM), when the slipping wheel slows down. The effect of increased friction is ensured by the angle of rise along the helix. The ratio of the teeth ensures a torque distribution of 40:60 (in favor of the rear wheels). The updated car, among other things, is equipped with a modern set of systems that make the driver’s task easier off-road. Multi-terrain Select allows you to adapt the on-board electronics to one of five types of surface (dirt and sand, crushed stone, mogul, stones and dirt, large stones).


"Cruiser" as it is

For a hefty, full-size body-on-frame SUV, the LC 200 rides remarkably well on asphalt. But expecting driver-like habits from him is as naive as snow in July. The steering wheel is “lazy” and “long” (but maneuverability is excellent!), responses to commands are softened. On a straight line, you periodically have to steer - the car “floats” slightly in the dynamic corridor. At the rearrangement, the diesel monster is capable of frightening with ship rolls and significant drifts. The stabilization system generally works adequately, first fighting against dragging of the front end and then against skidding. Everything is equally true for the modernized Land Cruiser, with the only difference being that it is more manageable due to its more favorable weight distribution.

In terms of spaciousness, expeditionary qualities, ride comfort and cross-country ability, the LC 200 is one of the most interesting full-size vehicles on the market. We suspect that the updated “cruiser” would be nicer to us in its diesel form as it is the most balanced. A heavy fuel Toyota in the “Lux” configuration is 24,000 rubles more expensive than a gasoline SUV with similar equipment. Considering the cost of 3,301,000, this cannot be called an overpayment.

The legendary Toyota Land Cruiser SUV in the fall of 2007 experienced another (eighth) generation change (having received the “200” index for its name) and made its European premiere at the end of October at the International Automobile Show in St. Petersburg.

Since then, it has been updated several times, but, as they say, first things first... Introduced in 2007, the “200th” not only retained its outstanding off-road qualities its predecessors, but has become much more technologically advanced and comfortable.

At the end of 2011, it received the first “portion” of updates, which affected both the exterior, the interior, and the technical part. On the outside, the car was equipped with new bumpers, modern floodlight-type front optics and mirrors with LED repeaters, and here are the changes interior decoration limited to new “decor” and functions. In addition to this, under the hood Russian versions The SUV was “registered” with a new V8 gasoline engine.

In August 2015, the Toyota Land Cruiser 200, once again, underwent restyling, which did without radical changes. The front part has changed most noticeably, receiving new headlights, a radiator grille and a hood, but the rear has changed in small ways - slightly redrawn lights and a slightly adjusted trunk lid.
There was no revolution in the interior, although it was refined with new options and better materials. The SUV's technology remained virtually untouched, but the list of equipment was replenished with additional items.

In general, we can say that the appearance of the full-size Land Cruiser 200 SUV embodies “indestructible power and absolute confidence.” The intricate, but decisive-looking front part shows a raised trapezoidal radiator grille with “spikes” piercing the head optics, completely LED headlights and a massive bumper with sections of fog lights.

The silhouette of the Japanese SUV stands out with its monumental outlines with “muscles” wheel arches, accommodating “rollers” measuring from 17 to 18 inches. The stern of the “land cruiser” houses rectangular lights with LED sections, interconnected by a chrome crossbar, and a huge two-section trunk lid.

The impressive appearance of the “two hundredth” is supported by no less impressive dimensions of the body: its length is 4950 mm, its width reaches 1980 mm, and its height is 1955 mm. The car has a 2850 mm distance between the axles, and the minimum ground clearance fixed at 230 mm.
When equipped, the weight of the “Japanese” exceeds 2.5 tons – from 2582 to 2815 kg, depending on the modification.

Inside the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 there is an atmosphere of harmony and luxury, which is created through a presentable design and high-quality finishing materials. Behind the massive multifunctional “donut” of the steering wheel are hidden large dials of a laconic instrument cluster with a 4.2-inch “window” trip computer in the middle.

In the center of the front panel there is a solid “chest of drawers” ​​with a 9-inch display of the multimedia complex, under which there are buttons for controlling auxiliary functions and zone control units climate system and standard “music”.

The interior of the SUV is finished with high-quality materials, including expensive plastics, genuine leather, as well as metal and wood inserts.

The front seats of the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 have a wide profile, soft filling and large ranges of settings, but practically no support on the sides. On the second row of seats, which can be moved longitudinally, there is plenty of space in each direction, and its backrests are adjustable according to the angle of inclination. The seats in the “gallery” are also comfortable, but they are more suitable for children.

This engine works in partnership with automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The “solid fuel” Toyota Land Cruiser 200 exchanges the first “hundred” in less than 9 seconds, reaches a peak speed of 210 km/h and on average “eats” about 8 liters of fuel in mixed mode.

“Two Hundred” is equipped with permanent four-wheel drive with a locked center differential, free cross-axle differentials and a low range transfer case. Mechanical part also complemented by rich electronic support. Under normal conditions, traction is transmitted between the axles in a ratio of 40% to 60%. “Smart” torque distribution control is capable of transmitting from 30 to 60% of the torque to the front wheels, and from 40 to 70% to the rear wheels.
