The wheelbase of the sedan is 2552 mm (versus 2470 for the hatchback), which provides it with a fairly spacious interior for its class and a roomy luggage compartment (the minimum volume is 460 liters).

In our country, the Volkswagen concern decided to produce cheaper cars from the end of 2009. At that time, the fifth generation Polo was the first car produced in Russia. After that, Skoda Rapid began to be produced in Russia, designed on the same platform as the Polo Sedan.

After the Koreans updated their Hyundai Solaris and Kia Rio budget sedans, it became clear that we would soon see a modernized Volkswagen Polo, which by this time had already lost the Sedan prefix. And so it happened. The restyled folk sedan was not long in coming. How much has changed in the course of modernization? Let's look for differences.

The appearance of the German sedan has not changed dramatically. The updated Polo received a new front bumper, front optics and grille, as a result of which it began to resemble the older Jetta model. The rear is much less different. It all came down to installing a new bumper and taillights with slightly modified graphics. And the most expensive versions of the Polo sedan can now be recognized by the chrome bar on the trunk lid.

There are also few changes in the cabin. Only the steering wheel truncated at the bottom and the instrument cluster with modified graphics are striking. Although the changes are actually a little more. During the restyling, the upholstery of the seats was improved, and the material from which the inserts on the front panel are made was also changed. Alas, there are no changes in technology yet: the updated Polo sedan enters the market with the same 1.6 engine of the EA111 family in two boost levels (85 or 105 hp). The gearbox is a five-speed "mechanics", and for the 105-horsepower version, a six-speed "automatic" is offered.

Meanwhile, related Skoda Rapid liftbacks, which are produced at the same plant near Kaluga, will start installing 1.6 engines of the new EA211 family (90 or 110 hp) from mid-June that meet Euro-5 standards instead of Euro-4. At first, new engines will be imported from Germany, but a motor plant has already been built near Kaluga, where mass production of such aspirated engines will begin in the fall (production volume is up to 150,000 per year). The leadership of the Volkswagen brand decided not to install new-generation imported engines on the Polo sedan, but to wait for the start of their local production. Therefore, by the end of the year, Polo will still have new engines.

The same sedan with a 105 hp engine. will cost 587,900 rubles, but there will be no more “trendline” with an automatic transmission: now the two-pedal Polo is at least 673,900 rubles for the Comfortline version.

But Polo became the first Volkswagen car, which has a three-year factory warranty (or 100,000 km) instead of the previous two-year (without mileage limit), and a 12-year warranty against through-corrosion of the body. Soon such conditions may appear for other Russian-assembled Volkswagens (these are Jetta and Tiguan).

The modernization of the Polo sedan will not end there. Next year, the GT modification will enter the market: with a 1.4 TSI turbo engine (125 hp), preselective DSG “robot”, 16-inch wheels, disc rear brakes and “sporty” touches in the design. By the way, the related Skoda Rapid is equipped with such a power unit from the very beginning of production.

The rear brakes are still drum brakes, discs will appear next year on the GT version.

A special version for a taxi is also being prepared: with a modified interior trim and a reinforced manual transmission. In addition, the plant in Kaluga plans to change some suppliers. For example, Volkswagen is not averse to abandoning Kama tires - most likely, they will be replaced by Continental tires.

According to the results of five months, Polo sales fell even more than the market: by 40% (to 16,143 cars). During the same time, Kia Rio sank by 13% (33,700 cars, including hatchbacks), Renault Logan - by 15% (16,493 cars of two generations), and the demand for Hyundai Solaris did not change at all (44,455 cars). In addition, the Ford Fiesta enters the market. The upgrades, coupled with an extended warranty, can help Polo edge out the competition, but all these measures should have been taken at least a year ago when the new Logan and updated Solaris entered the market. Now Volkswagen is in the role of catching up - and the Polo will not have an easy life for sure.
