How to choose the right car battery. Engine displacement, s m³

Is it time to change your car battery? The variety of batteries on the market is so great that you do not know which one to choose? Which parameter to prefer: a large capacity or a powerful starting current? Which company is more reliable?

Let's try to figure out which battery is better to choose for a car.

How to choose the right

The easiest and most uncomplicated way to choose correct battery for your car - see its parameters in the manual of your car. Or go to a specialized auto shop where you will pick up a battery from the catalog. You just have to decide on the manufacturer or price.

You can also look at the label of your old battery, if it is there, and if you are sure that you had the original copy specifically for your car model.

If you do not have such an opportunity and you choose the battery yourself, then the first thing to consider:

  • Does your car have a petrol or diesel engine?
  • what is the engine size?

According to these data, select the first parameter of the battery that suits you - capacity(amps/hours). Battery capacity is a parameter showing how much energy the battery will give out in 20 hours. For example: a value of 60Ah means that the battery will deliver a current of 3A for 20 hours.

The second main parameter is starting current. This parameter shows the maximum current that the battery can deliver within 30 seconds.

If you explain very primitively, then the battery capacity is responsible for how long it can turn your starter, and the value of the starting current will show how fast it will turn it.

Also on the marking of the battery, one more parameter can be given: “80 minutes” or “100 minutes”. This - " Reserve power". The figure shows how long a fully charged battery can deliver a current of 25 amperes.

Again, if very primitive, then this figure shows how much time you can drive a car with an idle generator.

Batteries are further divided into serviced And unattended. Make up your mind: if you like driving a car, buy a serviceable battery that you can monitor and carry out the necessary work to extend its service life.

If you are a busier person, you can take an unattended one. It has an almost hermetically sealed body and has been working for exactly as long as it has been working.

What options to choose

Engine capacity

In general, a diesel vehicle requires a battery with larger capacity than for gasoline engine the same volume.

So for a gasoline engine with a volume of up to 1.5 liters, a battery with a capacity of 45-55 Ah is suitable. For a car with the same diesel engine, a capacity of 65 Ah will be optimal.

For larger engines, 2.5 liters and more, respectively 65 (gasoline) and 75-100 Ah (diesel).

These figures are, of course, very approximate. The exact values will depend on specific model car and on which consumers are installed on board (the presence of an air conditioner, an additional heater, a music amplifier, etc.).

Company manufacturer

The next parameter is the brand of the manufacturer. The choice here is very large.

It should be noted that, unfortunately, there is not always a direct relationship " famous brand– an excellent high-quality battery that will serve you for many years” – in many respects, the operating conditions for a particular car also affect the service life.

There are quite a lot of cases when a mid-range battery lasts 6-7 years without fail, and an expensive branded one bought in a salon dies after a year and a half.

Normal battery life is considered to be approximately 4 years under normal operating conditions. The key word here is "conditions of use" and in different occasions conditions can differ significantly: the annual mileage is 40-50 thousand km or 10 thousand km, the average temperature in winter is -10 or -30. All of these factors affect battery life.

Video - which battery is better to choose for your car:

The duration of battery life is greatly affected by the number of full discharges “to zero” and the length of time during which the battery is discharged.

In any case, regardless of the price and brand of the manufacturer, when buying a new battery, you will be given a guarantee of only 2 years.

dimensions

The next parameter when choosing is the physical dimensions: length, width, height. It must fit in its regular place in the car and be fixed with a regular mount.

Positive contact location

In addition, be sure to check which side the positive contact is on the battery - on the right or on the left. If in your case the plus is located, for example, on the right, then the length of the positive wire is not enough to put the terminal on the instance in which the plus is on the left. And the design of the majority modern cars mobile batteries does not allow them to "deploy" and install the other side.

Date of issue

When buying, pay attention to its release date. It may be marked on the label or on the battery case itself. If there is no release date on the battery, then you should think very carefully: buy it or not?

Numerous stories “bought a new battery, and he died after a year and a half” have a very common explanation. The battery left the assembly line, stood for six months in the warehouse of the plant, then went to the regional warehouse and stood there for another six months. From there he moved to the wholesale warehouse of your city, and only then he got to a specific store. How long he was waiting for you in this store is also a big question. So you may well buy a new battery that was released 2 years ago.

Which company is better to choose according to the reviews of car owners

According to reviews on various Russian cars forums, the most popular batteries are firms: "BOSH", "VARTA", "OPTIMA".

Very pleased with the increase in recent years positive feedback about Russian batteries, for example: "TITAN", "AKOM", "PILOT", "BEAST".

But let's be fair: their percentage of marriage is slightly higher than that of foreign manufacturers. This explains the multiple disputes on the forums: “I bought a Russian battery and threw it away after 2 years!” or “I bought a domestic one - I have been driving for 5 years and no problems!”

auto battery rating

Bosch Silver- recognized as optimal for year-round use.

Varta Blue Dynamic- the best winter battery. Sufficiently large starting currents at low temperatures.

Optima Red Top For those who love everything American. The batteries of this particular company are used in America on rescue and ambulance cars. It also has high starting currents at low temperatures and minimal wear with frequent discharges. Made according to AGM technologies(filled not with a liquid, but with a solid electrolyte).

Tyumen(Russian-made) - excellent inrush currents at very low temperatures, combined with a price that is 4-5 times cheaper than imported analogues.

Medalistlong term services in conditions of frequent discharges and low price.

Which car batteries are best for working in low temperatures

All parameters indicated for the battery are calculated for a temperature of +27 degrees.

In severe frosts (below -25), the battery capacity can be reduced by half. Therefore, in the northern regions, at low temperatures, it makes sense to install a battery with a larger capacity than the original one, for example, 65 Ah instead of the standard 55 Ah.

But at the same time, you should not get carried away: the capacity of a standard battery is correlated with the power of the car's generator. By installing a significantly larger battery, you run the risk that the generator will not be able to cope with its charging. This will be excessive, which can cause it to overheat and break. It is allowed to install a battery with a capacity of up to 20% higher than the original one.

Also, at low temperatures, the amount of cold start current of your battery matters. The higher this parameter, the stronger the starter will turn the engine of your car that has frozen overnight. When choosing a battery, try to keep this parameter at least 500.

If you live in a region with a mild climate, then think about whether you should overpay for a large capacity or starting current of the battery?

Things to keep in mind when choosing a battery

Attention: when buying a battery, be sure to carefully inspect its case for chips and cracks. Even slight mechanical damage to the case may indicate that the battery has been dropped or hit, which means that its case may be leaky and it may have internal damage.

If you buy a serviceable battery that is already filled with electrolyte, be sure to remove the plugs and check the electrolyte level. It should completely cover the plates.

Important: Avoid completely discharging the battery!

Each discharge of the battery "to zero" significantly reduces the life of the battery. Avoid situations in which the battery is so discharged that the signal lamps on the dashboard car.

It should be noted that in many modern cars, the computer does not allow the battery to be discharged to such a state and, when the voltage drops to a certain value, it simply turns it off.

Conclusion

Purchase batteries from well-known, market-tested companies about which you can find information and reviews on the Internet.

It is not always worth trying to buy an expensive imported battery. Very often, a cheaper battery performs its functions just as well. Just keep the contacts clean and avoid frequent "zero" discharges.

    Since I am fat in Murmansk and we have severe frosts, when I changed my native battery, I took a new one with a capacity of 10% more.

    Oleg

    When changing the battery, I was guided by reviews and was not mistaken. Everything else is listed in the manual for your car. By the way, I did not install a larger capacity battery, on the advice of experts. The generator of your car is designed for a certain capacity and it will not fully charge a large capacity, you will have an undercharge, which will quickly make the battery unusable. I experienced it myself when I was young.

    Ilgiz

    I took the battery Tyumen 520 A and 60 A \ h. Machine 2109. Either it was undercharged, or it was restored. In general, after a year and 2 months I had to take a new one. As the saying goes, a miser pays twice.

    Alexander

    I recently had to change the battery in my car. The previous one was 6 years old. Starting current 55 A/h. I took it with the same starting current. I drive a car all year round. Frosts are up to -35.

    Andrey

    When choosing a battery, do not chase too much capacity. The difference between the native factory and the newly acquired should not exceed 10%. Those. if when buying a car there was a 55 Ah battery, then you need to buy a new battery with a maximum of 60 Ah. A higher battery capacity threatens to damage the generator. What it threatens on the way, it is understandable, I think to everyone. You will stand on the sidelines
    And the second point - do not chase the brand. Much more important is the timely periodic maintenance of the battery and how you use it during operation - if you often turn on the lights and loud music with the engine turned off, the battery will not last long.

    Nicholas

    Nowadays, the choice of batteries is quite large, but you need to buy according to the operating instructions for your car.

    I have had cars since 1997. I started with Moskvich-412. And on it stood the Tyumen battery. Proezdil 5 years, never failed, but of course, brought the density for the winter, charged to the stop, and sold it with it. Since then, if we are talking about replacing the battery, then I will definitely take the Tyumen and serviced one. All the same, at -50 in winter and +40 in summer, the density should be different. And they all worked and did not fail. Although, of course, the matter is not only in quality, but the attitude of the driver means a big role. Some people, in case of problems with winding, turn the starter to full discharge, and in fact, at the same time, the plates begin to collapse, well, how long will it last. It is reasonable and careful to treat everything and then everything will work.

    Artyom

    Native battery welled up and there was a problem which battery to buy. I rummaged around on the Internet and made sure that expensive imports do not always need to be taken. There are similar domestic ones. The main condition: always look at the release date, it may turn out that it is new, but overdue, and then it's a disaster. I bought myself Bosch Silver and I can use it even in the heat, even in the cold. When buying, I carefully examined the battery so that there were no chips, cracks and other mechanical damage. The store warned that it would last longer to control the charge and not bring it to zero.

    The regular battery worked for six years, tried to change it two years ago (at a crucial moment the car did not start), recharged it and safely forgot until recently. This winter, I purposefully decided to change it, I didn’t look at the brand much, I was looking for a battery with a starting current of 450 - 500 AMPS. Capacity - a maximum of 60, more is not necessary, why load regular units. Yes, one more important point- date of manufacture. It is from her that the battery life is counted. As a result, I bought Varta for 5500. Tyumen and this one stood nearby with a difference of 800 rubles. Decided not to spare money. Starting current 540 A, capacity 60 Ah, Niva Chevrolet car. I got up like a native, frosts, though not yet, but now I am calm.

    Ilya

    Completely overlooked important parameter battery as Cold Crank Current (TCC). As a rule, they remember about it after buying a battery, and most often in winter in frost -20 ... -26, when the starter refuses to turn the flywheel even on a fully charged fresh battery. Well, or it turns, but the rotation speed is not enough to start the engine. This parameter is especially important for owners of cars with diesel engines, since it is much more difficult to start a diesel engine in cold weather than a regular gasoline one. As for car batteries in general, the quality of modern batteries is simply terrible, and both cheap and expensive ones work on the strength of 2-5 years. This is despite the fact that even 15 - 20 years ago, any battery quietly worked out for 7-9 years!

    Egor

    A very dubious offer about serviced batteries. Firstly, you probably won’t find one anymore - they simply aren’t on sale. Secondly, if all manufacturers have switched to maintenance-free, then you need to understand that specialists work there, who understand what is better and what is hopelessly outdated.
    And about the capacity, I also disagree! The charging current does not depend on the capacity, so you can exceed it twice - nothing will happen to the generator. Especially for those who live in the North. It is better to spin normally once with big battery than to poke around with a small battery, and then start it with a pusher.

    Alexei

    I would like to note that "discharge to zero" has a beneficial effect on nickel-cadmium batteries(found mainly in "Japanese"). Since these batteries have a so-called "memory effect". But for lead, a complete discharge, on the contrary, is extremely undesirable. I would also like to add that European and Japanese batteries different types terminals. Accordingly, a non-native battery may simply not be suitable, even if everything else is taken into account (“polarity”, i.e. the location of the positive terminal relative to the case; dimensions - it only seems at first glance that they are all the same 🙂). And yes, it is advisable to take a battery with a current margin, so it will definitely last longer.

    Novel

    I bought a Topla 66 battery in the fall, I never regretted it, we have frosts below -30 in Siberia, the car always starts!

    Kostya

    You need to see what engine size and which engine is gasoline or diesel. Based on this, we select by amperes, by starting current and by reserve power. I took myself a maintenance-free battery, but in general, whoever has the time and desire can also be serviced (more durable if you follow it). Well, you need to see who made this battery. I had cases when a promoted brand lasted only 3 years, and a cheap one plowed for 5 years. When choosing a battery, I always look at the date of manufacture, as well as the condition, so that there are no chips or cracks. I try to follow the rules.

    Edward

    I have a battery with a high capacity "Beast". For our northern latitudes, this is a good option. Even at -40 the car starts immediately.

    Andrey

    I had to change the battery for my Nexia. I was guided in the choice primarily by the one that stood there before. A little-known manufacturer, but has worked out its full. I advise you to take a battery with a slightly larger capacity for the winter.

    Svetlana

    The starting current of 55 A / h is quite enough for the RENAULT LOGAN 1.4 and it is better to take ours, TYUMEN BATTERY, personally verified.

    Andrey

    Just like the speaker above, I prefer and recommend our domestic Tyumen or Kursk batteries. At a cost of at least two times cheaper than foreign ones, but they work no worse, well, or not noticeably worse. Moreover, for a hundred years nothing fundamentally new has been invented, the same case, the same acid and the same lead plates. The question arises - why then overpay three or four prices for Fuel, Bosch or Mutla? Yes, and it is worth supporting the domestic manufacturer! Moreover, they will last for about the same time. By the way, perhaps not everyone knows, but at the end of the battery life, it can be returned for quite decent money (500-1000 rubles).

    Michael

    I had a Bars Silver 60 Ah on my car, which lasted 2 winters, and on the third it began to die rapidly. I lit a cigarette 4 times from other people's cars, then I bought a Flagman 62 Ah, and I have been driving to this day for the fourth winter. So I don’t advise taking Bars)) I’ll say right away that the electrics in the car are in good condition, the contacts are good, the generator gives out a normal charge, the power wires are duplicated, i.e. Akum died not from malfunctions, but by itself.

    Anton

    I took a Varta 60 Ah battery. It has been working properly for more than two years - so far I am satisfied. In winter, the car starts without any complaints, even at -30.

    Basil

    I work as a salesman in an auto parts store and from year to year I observe the same picture - battery buyers in 80% of cases take the wrong batteries for their car! They prefer to buy larger capacities, they say they are both “stronger” and “more powerful” than those recommended by the automaker. And after all, they don’t even think that this is an additional load on the generator and undercharging of the battery (moreover, chronic). And then some bring back, they say he does not hold the container - change it! Well, of course it doesn't! He's really in the city traffic jam and does not charge! Comrades! Buy batteries for your car! It was not designed and developed by idiots!

    Yuri

    It is necessary to understand the principle of operation of the battery, when discharged, crystals form on the plates, and when charged, these crystals dissolve again, and so when deep discharge the crystals become huge and, when charged, do not completely dissolve, accumulation occurs and, subsequently, the jar closes.

    Sergey

    In principle, when choosing a battery, it is difficult to decide, especially for novice drivers. If determined by the latest technologies, then it is better to choose a gel one. Such a battery does not have evaporation from the electrolyte, it can be transported in any position, the plates in the device do not crumble until the end of the service life. But this species best used only in warm or moderate cold weather. IN this case, it is better to have two options - gel + lead-acid. Many more begin to get lost when there are many advisers, and the seller is ready to sell you anything, just to make a profit. There are sites that help you choose a battery for those. characteristics of the car, without any purchase of goods.

    I have a Tyumen battery, the fifth winter. 60 Ah, 520 starting current. I let it down once, corny did not have time to recharge, I rode five kilometers in the cold for a week, and then the car stood for ten days without movement. Perhaps I will change by next winter, but in Tyumen in any case.

    Vladimir

    After 5 years, the battery fell into disrepair, sparing no money, I bought a new Bosch company. And I don’t regret it, I’ve been skating quietly for the seventh year now, nothing bothers me. Of course, we don’t have severe frosts, but at -20 it starts up without problems.

    Oleg

    I had Varta Blue Dynamic left the factory for 4 years, and if it weren’t for my sloppiness, I left it in the garage for a month with open door. it may be departed and more. But alas, he died. I had to worry about buying a new one. At first I wanted to take as much as the 70th, but consulted with an electrician in time. Buying a more powerful one does not save in the winter with an easy start, but adds hemorrhoids. The generator does not fully charge such a battery, moreover, the load on the "horseshoe", i.e. on the diode bridge of the generator can lead to its failure, and this is if you cannot replace the diodes in the generator yourself, then you need a service with all the consequences. Therefore, on the advice of an electrician, I took it with native parameters, but only Tyumen. I took it not because of money but on advice. It's been five years now with no problems.

    Vyacheslav

    About these batteries, I have to work a lot with them, I can only say that miracles happen. So a battery of an unknown brand, bought in a stall near the Moscow Ring Road in 1997, lasted 9 years, Varta Silver - 3 years, and did not survive 3 winters. Tyumen often stands on the special equipment that I service, according to reviews, it has been caring for 3 years on tractors. And marriage is everywhere. THERE WAS a case of battery Patriot died faster than I drove from Voronezh to Lipetsk.
    You can philosophize a lot about capacity, charge strength, starting currents, but on MTZ tractors there were previously two batteries of 225 amps 6 volts in series and they were charged by a very modest 35 amp generator, and on the MTZ-50 there was no generator at all in the early versions, but a dynamo and somehow, after all, she charged them .... These two are 225

    Alexander

    I prefer to take Tyumen batteries, they are inexpensive and the quality is quite decent. And since the car is domestic, I don’t see the point of taking something more expensive. On average, they work for me for 4-5 years, then I change, despite the fact that he has not yet been killed. Yes, and once every six months I do a control recharging, since in a car it still does not fully recharge.

    Ivan

    I live in Novy Urengoy, this is in the Yamalo-Nenets autonomous region. Winter 9 months and installed Webasto, give a big load on the battery. From my own experience, I rely on Tyumen batteries, the capacity is the same as that of a standard battery. Tested on many cars, always confident start of the internal combustion engine.

    Denis

    I thought for a long time which battery is better to choose for my car, and now I will be wise in choosing it (I didn’t even know about many parameters). The battery will probably last much longer now.

    Andrey

    When buying or replacing a battery, you still need to be guided by a sense of proportion. There are no "eternal" batteries, 2-3 years and for replacement. Is it worth throwing money away for "brands" and other marketing tricks?

    Nicholas

    On all three machines. which I bought only in salons, there were VARTA batteries. So, in 2108, he retired for 7 and a half years, on Lada Priore, 4 years, and on Veste for 1 year. So I put Tyumen on the last two, though I didn’t choose stronger, as many try, believing that it’s easier to start a car in winter, but by charging current. Powerful does not mean better, the capabilities of the generator are limited by its output current and it will not always be able to charge your powerful battery. And its undercharging in winter will manifest itself, one day you will not start your car. I've had Tyumen on the Prior for 5 years, and I've been driving on Vesta for two years now. True, I regularly check the charge of the battery and the operation of the generator.

    Vitaly

    You should always be guided by the manual for the car, when choosing any spare part for it, this also applies to the battery. Here I read reviews, many take more powerful ones, they think that in winter it will be easier for them to start the car. And the fact that the generator works with a greater load and does not fully charge the battery is forgotten about. Ask any electrician at the service and they will tell you that the current should be the same as that of the regular one that was on the car from the factory. And as for imported ones, now we have enough good reliable domestic-made batteries, so don't waste your money. The performance and reliability of the battery depends only on ourselves, with quality care, the domestic one will live for 7-8 years. It is checked up on own experience.

    Anatoly

    The battery is undoubtedly one of the important element car equipment. It is not possible to start the engine without a battery with a starter, and is it necessary to modern operation car. I still remember the times when cars were easily started with a crooked starter, or in a simple way, with a special handle adapted for manually cranking the engine. Now they are absent in the vehicle configuration and correctly. I have had several times in my life when the battery failed right on the road, or completely discharged, or closed for some reason. If it was possible to start the engine from the pusher, I drove to the place possible replacement battery without stopping without turning off the engine. There were cases when the generator failed. In this case, I had to ride on a battery, praying all the way so that its capacity and charging would be enough to get there. Therefore, when I select a battery, first of all, I look, such an indicator of it as possible time work it until it is completely discharged. And so in general, I buy a battery with a capacity corresponding to the displacement of the engine. For a 1.6 liter engine, 55-60 ampere hours, respectively. And also so that in size it sits well in the nest and is fixed with a car mount.

  • Ivanovich

    By taking good care of the battery, permanent care, recharging, most batteries are guaranteed to provide power to the car for 3-5 years. When the battery terminals are constantly dirty, wet, when the battery is not firmly fixed in the seat, what can be expected from it? Only premature wear and closing cans.
    If I buy, then batteries with the BOSCH brand, although all this is a convention.

The battery is the source of autonomous power on the machine, providing start power plant. The operating period of the device is from 3 to 5 years. But it all depends on the conditions in which the machine is used, the characteristics of the battery itself.

The need to select a new drive arises after the old one loses its ability to hold a charge. There are situations when the battery does not charge or mechanical damage occurs. This makes further operation impossible.

The question arises - how to choose the right battery for a car in order to ensure normal work transport, electrical equipment? When choosing a suitable device, study the recommendations of the automaker.

Basic indicators:

  1. Capacity - determines the ability of the battery to work for a certain time, giving the right amount of current. If the battery has a potential of 40 amp-hours, then for 40 hours a current of 1 A will be supplied.
  2. Starting power is an indicator representing the value maximum power, which the drive produces for 30 seconds and a temperature of -18. The value determines the ability to start in cold weather.

These options are basic.

When choosing which battery is best for a car, you should not install a battery with a lower potential, since starting problems will arise with the onset of a cold period. Exceeding the norm is undesirable - the generator, the equipment in the machines is designed for a certain power. The exception is machines with an improved electrical system.

Additional selection criteria

In the process of searching for a drive, they pay attention to the characteristics of the car, its operating conditions. The year of manufacture of the vehicle, model, manufacturer also matters - all this allows you to do right choice.

Extra options:

  • Standby power - determines the period, the time during which the device is able to replace faulty generator for normal movement. Thinking about which battery to choose for a car, it is worth studying this factor.
  • Dimensions - determine the ease of installation. Smaller parameters are undesirable, since the dishonesty of manufacturers leads to a reduction in potential. The exception is models of trusted brands made using new technologies. Exceeding the required dimensions is accompanied by an increase in weight, load, which is also undesirable.
  • Additional elements designs for ease of use. These are comfortable handles, a charge indicator, shields that cover the terminals.
  • The location of the terminals determines the wiring diagram. On foreign cars, the polarity is often reversed, on domestic cars it is direct.

Application the latest equipment, technologies and developments allows manufacturers to create products with an extended service life. So the brand is also important.

Which drives are better - serviced or unattended

If the question arises, how to choose a battery for a car, you should pay attention to the type of device.

  • serviced models. Today they are used extremely rarely, but when the plates are closed, it is possible to replace them. There is a lack of structural strength.
  • Maintenance-free - modifications suitable for operation in ideal conditions. With their choice, there is no need for special maintenance. Represented by calcium and hybrid models. Differ in the increased operational period, smaller self-discharge.
  • Low-maintenance - executions where periodic checks of the level and density of the electrolyte cannot be dispensed with.

It is difficult to determine which are the best batteries for a car; each performance has its own advantages and disadvantages. For modern machines, which are constantly in motion, calcium accumulators are preferable.

For rare and occasional use of transport, hybrid drives are preferable that can cope with a full discharge, rare operation. With regular, active operation and loads, a low-maintenance model will be the best.

Regular research, tests, and the use of special technologies allow manufacturers to create new drive modifications. Considering auto batteries, it is easier to decide which brand to choose, having studied the advantages and properties of the proposed designs.

Often the real parameters differ from the declared ones, there are differences in the durability of reliability.

Top drive models:

  1. Bosch Silver, Silver Plus - productive, represent an average price category. The difference lies in the use of silver alloys in the design, which slows down the processes of oxidation and destruction. stand out high performance reliability, hassle-free.
  2. Varta Blue Dynamic is one of the best manufacturer's batteries. The design includes elements of silver, but differs in layout, which helps to increase the starting current.
  3. Optima Red Top is a line of American batteries that are distinguished by their performance at low temperatures.
  4. Tyumen - domestic low-maintenance modifications that compete with foreign brands. There is a minimum self-discharge, high starting currents.
  5. Medalist - reliable, durable performance. These calcium batteries are the most productive, resistant to oxidation even at high temperatures.

Timely care of the drive, maintaining the cleanliness of the structure, removing contaminants are actions that maintain the health of the device.

When installing a battery, it is worth remembering how to maintain a car battery.

Subtleties of service:

  • maintenance-free models need only periodic recharging, visual control, diagnosis is possible;
  • low-maintenance ones may additionally require filling with distilled water, but this happens 1.5 years after installation;
  • serviced versions require a competent approach, control of density and electrolyte level.

The question often arises - how to maintain a car battery? This concept also implies a care process that affects the operational period, the quality of work.

Important points:

  • dry, heated rooms are chosen for storage;
  • reliable fixation of the terminals ensures traffic safety;
  • proper operation eliminates the preliminary failure;
  • charging is carried out with a deep discharge of the device, it is important to connect the unit correctly, follow the instructions.

IN winter period the drive needs special care due to increased load, more systems, severe weather conditions. Here it is desirable to protect the device and engine compartment thermal insulation, which will minimize the aggressive effects of the environment.

All car owners, sooner or later, are affected by the choice of the best battery for their car. In order not to make a mistake when buying and not to play the lottery with stores, you should independently understand the main features of reliable devices. Before getting to know best models devices, we will figure out what criteria you need to select a battery for your car.

To choose a good battery for a car, you need to understand a few nuances. The choice should be approached responsibly and without haste. So, what characteristics should you pay attention to?

  1. Decide on battery capacity the higher the score, the better. A car battery is the same as a phone battery. On the battery itself, you will see a marking on which it will be written how many hours the battery can accumulate.
  2. The second important point is terminals. There is no particular choice here, you need to buy a battery with the same terminals that were on the old sample.
  3. Pay attention to features such as starting current. It is thanks to him that the engine heats up in cold weather. And the colder it is outside, the more current is required to accelerate the motor. Therefore, it is better to choose a model with high performance from the very beginning.
  4. When choosing brand, it is better to stay on a foreign model. However, it's up to you. But it is always worth remembering that the quality standards of devices from Europe are much higher than those of their Russian counterparts.
  5. Of course, one should not forget about cost. All battery models can be divided into three groups: economy, standard and premium. Which one to buy is your choice.

Remember that in the matter of choosing a battery, saving is not the best adviser. After all, what more expensive model the better it is made, and the longer it will last.

But you shouldn’t choose the most expensive either, because you risk overpaying just for the brand. It should also be borne in mind that there are three groups into which all models can be divided: serviced, partially serviced, unattended. It will depend on which one you buy: whether it is repairable, or if it breaks down, you should immediately go to the store for a new battery.

Conclusion

If you do not know which battery to choose, then it is best to study battery ratings and reviews. real buyers published on the Internet. You can find such a rating on the Brand.guru portal, where the most popular battery models of different groups are presented. Remember that when buying, it is important to take into account not only its characteristics, but also the cost of the model, as a rule, expensive devices have higher quality and efficiency indicators. The duration of its service and your peace of mind depend on how competently you approach the choice of a battery for a car.

We select a battery for a car

Like it or not, the battery is the heart of the car, its energy and life. Whether you have a twice-working engine or a serviceable transmission, with a dead battery, you will not only not go far - you will not even budge. How to choose, maintain and competently operate this not too expensive, but so desired element cars?

First, let's figure out what a battery is in principle and why it is needed in a car. After all, the comparison with the human heart is not accidental: until it gets sick, the location of this organ, and even more so its functions, are of little concern to us. As a rule, the first acquaintance with the battery occurs in an atmosphere of excessive nervousness due to the inability to start the car. This happens either from our own carelessness (they forgot to turn off the dipped headlights or the radio), or due to adverse weather conditions (Siberia, minus thirty overboard, lack of auto-heating). So, sooner or later, you still have to learn how to handle the subject of this article.

A bit of theory

Without delving too deeply into the physics of the process: a battery is a device that converts chemical reactions into electrical energy. It is a series-connected independent containers, consisting of lattice plates immersed in an electrolyte. Most standard version- six cells (cans) of 2 volts, which gives us a total of 12-volt battery (or just battery).

Let's turn to the root cause, because when buying a car (new or used, it doesn't matter), there is no need to run for a new battery. The question is why and why car owners periodically change this element. There are several reasons.

With new cars, everything is more or less transparent. At the design stage of the machine, the battery power is selected based on the specified parameters. Of course, in the project all the numbers are “ideal”, that is, the car has new candles, a generator, high voltage wires, and gasoline - the most best quality. In addition, manufacturers are not averse and once again save money, so often new car the battery is cheap, that is, low-power. This does not mean “just to leave the gate”, however, an additional load, such as the obligatory dipped headlights, radio, heater and wipers turned on, can kill such a battery quickly enough.

In the case of used cars, the seller very rarely pays attention to the battery. Even less often, the buyer himself asks questions. The main thing is that something stands in this place, and the car starts the first time. When buying a used car in the summer, many do not pay attention to the condition of the battery at all, encountering problems only with the onset of the first noticeable cold weather.

Finally, the batteries themselves are a product with a certain life resource. In other words, the battery is mortal, like any other element of the car. You can determine the remaining supply of her strength yourself, or you can in any specialized store, where such diagnostics, as a rule, are carried out free of charge. After all, it's stupid to fork out for a new battery if your battery can be revived with a simple charge.

Basics of classification and main parameters

In the most general sense, batteries are divided into serviced and maintenance-free (or low-maintenance, which is almost the same thing). The nuance is that the service must be regular, otherwise the battery will work very badly. Therefore, if you prefer to look under the hood as little as possible, it is better to purchase a maintenance-free option, especially since, according to experts, these models have a longer service life. With one caveat: a maintenance-free battery is a one-way ticket. If it breaks or deteriorates, you can safely hand it over to the scrap.

Now for three things to keep in mind when buying a new battery. The first is the electrical capacity, calculated in ampere-hours. In fact, this is the ability of the battery to give electricity for a given number of hours. Capacity can be nominal and reserve. Rated is calculated at 20-hour battery discharge. In other words, with a capacity of 60 Ah, every hour the battery will give a current of 3 A. Or the discharge current should be 5% of the capacity declared by the manufacturer.

Reserve capacity - the estimated value of the battery power reserve when delivering a current of 25 A. Let's say that your generator has failed. How many minutes can you drive on just the battery without recharging? That's it. By the way, this parameter, as a rule, is not regulated by documents and is not indicated on the label, but self-respecting manufacturers try to keep the bar around 90 minutes.

There is the following opinion about power: you do not need to install the most powerful battery from the assortment of the store on your car. It is inexpedient neither in terms of money, nor in terms of the benefits received. The generator of the car is not omnipotent and can only charge the battery up to a certain limit. Undercharging and overcharging are two extremes that are best avoided as they significantly shorten battery life. Well, if your model belongs to the category of calcium or hybrid batteries (they are designed so that when fully charged"self-shut off" and stop receiving current). And if not? When recharging, the positive plates suffer (oxidize, crumble, collapse), and when undercharged, the negative ones. This process is lengthy, you won’t feel it right away, but the main thing is not to cross the limit of recoverability, because if the battery voltage drops to 2 volts, no chargers will help you. In the cold, the electrolyte of a discharged battery desperately seeks to turn into H 2 O. You yourself understand that water in a limited space behaves unpredictably and can easily turn into a time bomb. Literally.

The second thing is the starter or starting current. It is also cold scroll current or starting power. Conditions: temperature - minus 18 degrees Celsius, time - 30 seconds. These conditions when checking the battery are kept unchanged by all manufacturers, whether they are Americans, Japanese or Germans with Russians. However, it is worth remembering that starting an engine is an energy-intensive process, and the above temperature is not prohibitive for many regions of our vast country. Other things being equal, the higher the starting power of the battery, the more often the starter will turn the engine, therefore, the more likely it is to start before you deplete the battery or fill the candles.

Battery voltage is the simplest setting. It's either 6 or 12 or 24 volts. All passenger cars are equipped with 12-volt batteries, anything less is motorcycles, mokiki and other small vehicles. Healthy trucks are equipped with 24-volt models, smaller trucks can get by with a battery from a passenger car.

All of the above characteristics can be safely "read" from the marking of the product you like, but this is far from all you need to know when choosing a new battery.

Special attention should be paid to the size and connecting dimensions battery. The fact is that the manufacturer allocates an extremely limited space for the battery. And the scope of American cars is not even close to the compactness and economy of the thrifty Japanese. Area under the hood Japanese car can be so tiny that only its full analogue or a unit of similar, rare in our country, sizes can take the place of a dead battery. The mount can be lower or upper, and this must also be taken into account when inspecting the purchase. For bottom mount there should be a protrusion at the bottom of the battery. The top fastening is carried out using a frame, which should tightly wrap around the battery. Vibrations on the life of the plates have a bad effect.

Pushing the battery under the hood is half the ordeal. The main thing is to connect it. And here the owners of American cars need to tense up, because for relatives, “shtatovskiye”, batteries, the current output is carried out not from the top cover, but from the side. The same goes for battery polarity. It can be direct (plus - on the left) and reverse (plus - on the right). A polarity error can cause you to not have enough wires to properly connect the battery. Of course, you can use adapters, but an extra element under the hood not recommended by the manufacturer will not lead to anything good.

Now let's talk about features of operation and maintenance of batteries, because I would not want to change the battery every time with the onset of winter.

How to determine that your battery is completely dead or is at this stage? Most of the problems are detected at start-up - intermittent, jerky, starter movement. Rapid loss of power - after the third or fourth turn of the key in the ignition, the battery stops turning the engine in principle. The indicator lamp on the display does not go out for a long time, which is responsible for the state of the battery. These are all signs of a deep discharge.

If the battery is serviced, then it is worth checking the level and density of the electrolyte. The matter is simple: we unscrew the plastic caps, load a special pipette inside and look at the color and amount of liquid. Dark color electrolyte is bad, the plates are destroyed. We check the battery with a load, and even better - with a charge. If the density is not restored, the electrolyte is not brought to a boil, which means that the end has come earlier than we would like. It is more difficult with maintenance-free models - they do not have covers, the only way to check is to charge and test on a car. If the starter starts to spin normal mode, then look for the problem elsewhere, your battery is alive and well.

In any case, the battery life is not eternal, so you need to look at the mileage or the time. Before the onset of cold weather, it is advisable to fully charge the battery if you are not completely sure of its strength. In the event that you bought a used car and the seller did not share with you the date of purchase of the battery, or, even worse, deliberately concealed it, it is better not to risk it, but to change the battery as soon as possible. It will be much more offensive if the element is covered somewhere on the track, in complete isolation from civilization. In winter, this can lead to truly tragic consequences.

Remember that the battery "carries" not only the engine, but also all additional electrical loads, including lighting, music, interior lighting, work on-board computer and alarms. If you notice that at idle the headlights noticeably lose their brightness, and in the morning the car does not start the first time even in summer, then there is a possibility of a current leakage. In other words, at night the battery loses its charge more than the prescribed norm. It makes sense to check with an auto electrician or, as happened once with the author of this article, just check the reliability of connecting the terminals. Poorly tightened terminals can cause "funny" perturbations at the time of ignition.

Finally, as usual, let's take a look at model range, main manufacturers and prices.

Buy anyhow where the battery is undesirable. Considering that many shops (you can’t call these points differently) are buying up used batteries from the public, it’s easy to run into a used battery or even a fake. When buying, pay attention to appearance product, no damage, markings, labels stuck on, year of manufacture. If a particular seller specializes in a particular brand like official dealer, do not hang your ears too much. Perhaps, at your expense, they are simply trying to promote something new.

Strange as it may seem, our domestic producers they know a lot about batteries, so you shouldn’t particularly chase after imported brands. Russian brands and products of the CIS countries have proven themselves well in the market and are successfully competing with such venerable comrades as, for example, Bosch or Mutlu. The most popular models are from the companies Varta, Westa, Tubor (Titan, Arctic, Cobat), their products are widely represented in many specialized stores.

The price of a battery largely depends on the nominal and starting power. The higher the power, the more expensive the product. 55-ampere batteries of acceptable quality start at two thousand rubles, 65-ampere ones - from three. The upper price group is also characterized by a high starting current, in the region of 400-500 A, while the average-priced batteries can produce a maximum of 300-350 A. In any case, when choosing a battery, you should first of all be guided by the appropriateness of using this particular model on your car.

Olga Nagornyuk

A failed and non-recoverable battery (ACB) makes it impossible to operate the car and forces you to look for a replacement. What parameters should I pay attention to when buying a battery? Our tips are designed to help beginners who encounter this problem for the first time.

When to change the battery

Average service life car battery given that correct operation and timely maintenance is 3-5 years. You will know that your battery has served its purpose when:

  • the battery stops holding a charge. If the battery is almost completely discharged overnight, then it has expired. The battery charge indicator will help track this moment;
  • the battery is not charged either while driving or from a special device;
  • the battery shows signs of mechanical damage: case cracks, traces of leaked liquid, etc.

Only a specialist can give a conclusion about the unsuitability of the battery for further operation, therefore, before sending the battery to rest, have it tested at a service station (if you are dealing with a serviced battery). Perhaps it is subject to restoration and is able to serve an additional year and a half.

How to choose the right battery

If the service station decided that it was impossible to restore the battery, then it was time to look for a new one. By what criteria should you choose a battery in order to ultimately get the best option that would suit both you and your car?

Capacity

This indicator can be found in the car's instruction manual or, if it is lost, on the website of the community of owners of this vehicle model. Another way is to look at an old battery, but you need to be sure that it was a perfect fit for your car.

When choosing a battery, you must not deviate from the capacity set by the manufacturer. Buying a battery with a capacity higher than indicated in the user manual, you risk getting a regular undercharge of the battery. The generator simply will not have time to charge it while driving. A smaller capacity is fraught with a quick failure of the battery.

Capacitance is measured in ampere-hours (Ah) and directly depends on the power of the engine.

Starting current

Designed to start a cold engine, this indicator must correspond to the numbers recommended by the manufacturer and contained in the car's operating instructions. A battery with a starting current higher than necessary will lead to a breakdown of the starter, a lower one will cause problems with starting the engine.

Terminal polarity

Pay attention to whether the location of the "+" and "-" icons on the battery corresponds to their placement on the car. Otherwise, the length of standard power wires to connect the battery may not be enough.

Dimensions. Using a tape measure, measure the height, length, and width of the new battery and either compare with similar parameters an old battery, or figure out if your purchase will fit into the space allotted for it in the car.

Pay attention to the way the battery is attached to your car.

The battery you buy must match it.

Date of issue

Data on the date of issue and service life are indicated on the battery case. Experts recommend purchasing batteries that have been manufactured for no more than 3 months. Then you can expect to receive a product whose specifications correspond to those stated in the instructions.

Keep in mind: the battery life does not start from the moment it is installed on the car, but from the day it is released.

Battery category

All batteries are divided into 3 types, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages:

  • serviced (collapsible). The oldest type of batteries, which can be visually distinguished by the presence of screw caps on the top panel that cover the openings of cans with electrolyte.
    By cons collapsible batteries can be attributed to their need for regular maintenance(electrolyte level control) and short service life (twice as long as other batteries). The advantages are resistance to deep charge, the possibility of recovery (repair) and low price;

  • unattended. These batteries have a sealed case with no filling holes. Such devices do not need regular topping up of water and exclude liquid leakage. Their undoubted advantage is the longest service life among all batteries, averaging 5 years.
    This is where their advantages end and their disadvantages begin. Due to the impossibility of access to the internal contents, the repair of such batteries is impossible. They are susceptible to low temperatures, and therefore in cold climates their life expectancy is drastically reduced. Besides maintenance-free batteries the most expensive of all types of batteries on the market today;

  • low-maintenance. Transitional option between serviced and maintenance-free batteries. The average price, decent service life (about 3 years) and the possibility of repair make these batteries the most in demand.

Like dismantled car batteries, they require constant control liquid level in cans and are resistant to fast charging, but last about 1.0-1.5 years more.

Checking the battery upon purchase

When buying a new battery for a car, pay attention to some of the nuances that will help you avoid purchasing a fake or defective product:

  • the presence on the battery of information about the country of origin and the name of the manufacturer;
  • complete with any car battery must be a technical passport;
  • the absence of defects and mechanical damage on the battery case;
  • output terminals must be smooth.

If you do not observe any of the above in the battery you are purchasing, it is likely that you have a fake in front of you. Buying a used battery will cost about 20% less than a new one. Want to earn more? Save on petrol.

In order not to get a battery that will die for a long time on the second day of operation, do not lose sight of the following:

  • the surface of the battery case must be smooth, without bulges and cracks;
  • the presence of stains on the terminals from the oxidation of contacts is an indirect evidence of wear and tear of the device;
  • calculate how much time has passed since the release of the device (the date is indicated on the case) and whether its service life will end in a month;
  • The price of a used battery cannot be half the price of a new one. The maximum difference usually does not exceed 30%.

How to Extend Battery Life

Having become the owner of a new car battery, make sure that it lasts you as long as possible:

  • keep in mind that in cold weather, the battery has to work with a double load, since more energy is required to start the crankshaft at low temperatures. If it was not possible to start the first time, a second attempt should be made after at least 3 minutes: you need to give time to the electrolyte thickened from the cold to come into contact with the plates;
  • when dealing with a serviced battery, it is necessary to check the electrolyte level weekly;
  • watch the degree of tension of the drive belt, otherwise you are threatened with a weak recharging of the battery and a reduction in its service life;
  • after driving on a new battery for a year, start monitoring the level of its charge. A half-discharged battery must be removed and recharged;
  • before the onset of cold weather, change the oil to a more liquid one (winter version), which does not freeze or thicken under the conditions of our harsh winters;
  • in severe frosts, before starting the car engine, it is advisable to warm up the battery by turning on the headlights high beam. Accelerate the oil with short starts of the starter and only then start the engine.
