Cabriolet four-seater. Roofless: all convertibles on the Russian market

Cabriolet four-seater. Roofless: all convertibles on the Russian market

It's no secret that many convertibles have different roof folding / unfolding technologies. Some owners need to use physical force, while other owners of such cars just need to press a button.

Today we bring to your attention the rating top 11 convertibles with the fastest folding roofs. Moreover, our hit parade included only those cars, the equipment of which includes an electric system for folding / unfolding the top.

We are sure that our rating is more than relevant, because the long-awaited summer is finally in the yard. So, check out the list to see which convertibles with electric roofs can open faster to enjoy the sun and wind as soon as possible.

The roof of the Mazda MX-5 RF folds in the same 13 seconds. According to experts, this is a very impressive result, given the cost and positioning of this car.

5. Jaguar F-Type Convertible (12 seconds)

Jaguar F-Type Convertible

Premium British Model Jaguar F-Type Convertible equipped with a roof that can be raised or lowered in 12 seconds at speeds up to 30 miles per hour (48 kilometers per hour).

What could be better than riding a cabriolet on a fine day? Warm air caresses the hair, the engine murmurs pleasantly, the sound of which is “superimposed” by the singing of birds. Beauty! The only pity is that with the onset of the crisis, many companies stopped importing open cars to Russia. Previously, relatively affordable open-top cars were offered by Peugeot, Ford, Opel. Now "postcards" are the prerogative of the premium. Although there are exceptions.

Smart Fortwo Cabrio (from 1,100,000 rubles)

BMW Z4 (from 2,600,000 rubles)

The Bavarian hardtop roadster coupe debuted back in 2009, but is still admired for its shape: a low, sprawling body and a long hood make you involuntarily look back. To fully fold the roof, you need to stop and wait 20 seconds. The most affordable version is equipped with a two-liter 184-horsepower engine. Its forced version develops 245 hp. But the modifications with an in-line three-liter “six” that, depending on the performance, develop 306 or 340 hp, really excite the head.

Mercedes-Benz SLC (from 2,690,000 rubles)

This is not a mistake at all. Indeed SLC. That is what the compact Mercedes coupe-cabriolet, which replaced the SLK, is now called. However, replaced is too strong a word. In fact, this is not a new car, but a product of a small restyling, during which the well-known model has slightly changed the design of the body and interior. Unlike its predecessor, its roof can also be folded down while driving – at speeds up to 40 km/h. A feature of the car is the photochromic glass on the roof (option), which can change the degree of dimming. The initial SLC is equipped with a 184-horsepower two-liter engine. Its forced version produces 245 hp. The top modification is supplied with a three-liter V6 with a capacity of 367 hp.

BMW 4 Series Convertible (from 2,770,000 rubles)

This four-seater coupe-cabriolet is made on the platform of the well-known 3-series. The metal roof folds/unfolds in 20 seconds at speeds up to 18 km/h. But it is too heavy and takes up a lot of space: with the top down, the trunk volume is 220 liters, and with the top up - 370. The Bavarian convertible is unusual in that it uses ... a turbodiesel (2.0 l, 190 hp) as the base engine. ). There are also gasoline engines in the range: a two-liter 249-horsepower and a three-liter 326-horsepower.

Of course, all of the following is applicable to roadsters, speedsters, targs and landaus, but for ease of perception, I propose to call all open bodies convertibles within the framework of the article, without touching on the division into subclasses.

1. Not for our weather, not for our cities

For some reason, supporters of this point of view are sure that an open body is appropriate only in a hot climate. Skepticism is easily treated. We ask a couple of unobtrusive questions about the critic's trips to hot countries (UAE, Egypt, Thailand, etc.), after which we politely ask about the number of convertibles seen on the roads.

You won't hear big numbers, because driving with the roof open in the heat is a sure way to burn yourself in the sun in half an hour. Even in the southern part of Europe, open-top convertibles are mostly driven by tourists during the day. Wise natives open the roofs in the evenings. Last summer, with relatively comfortable St. Petersburg +25, it was enough for me to spend only an hour and a half behind the wheel to get an overabundance of sunburn in the arms, face and neck. It is no coincidence that convertibles are popular, for example, in the UK and even in Scandinavia - just remember the open Volvo and Saab loved by Finns and Swedes. Why are we worse? But in any case, a cap is the best friend of a convertible owner.

“There is nothing worse than standing in a traffic jam on a convertible, covered in dust and breathing the exhaust of a fuming KamAZ” - this is practically a quote that regularly appears in almost all articles related to open cars.

But sorry, standing in a traffic jam on a sedan or crossover is not at all more fun, and normal people prefer not to open windows in such situations. Why this should be done on a convertible is an interesting question. Well, in general, if car life consists entirely of traffic jams and traffic jams, maybe you should think about the subway or a bicycle?

2. Convertible is cold in winter

But no! Even if we are not talking about transformers with a hard folding roof, but about their relatives with a classic soft top. The multi-layer roof material (most models have a three-, and some even a five-layer awning) of modern open cars keeps heat well and is not blown by the wind, besides, it has a rubberized layer that prevents precipitation from entering the cabin. As a result, it is absolutely comfortable in such a car in winter. Any modern convertible is an absolutely all-weather vehicle. Here is a year-round use of the Saab 9-3 Aero Convertible.

By the way, driving without a roof is also possible in winter - with a windscreen, windows raised and the stove turned on, a slight minus is not a hindrance. The cabin is warm and cozy. Even more comfort will be given by systems like the Mercedes “air scarf”.

But there are a couple of recommendations for fans of such walks. Opening and especially closing the roof is warm, allowing the car to warm up. The ingress of moisture into the inside of the mechanism, combined with a negative temperature, can play a cruel joke, leaving you with a half-open awning, waiting for a bill from the service for a considerable amount. Also, in the cold, you need to be careful with the plastic rear window, which is found on age convertibles (for example, early versions of the Mazda MX-5, BMW Z3). If, when lowering the roof, it folds in half, then in sub-zero temperatures it can simply burst.

In the photo: BMW Z3

3. The roof will be cut

Necessarily! And in addition, they will pierce the wheels and scrawl an indecent word on the hood with a key. Next time you won't park your car across the yard and turn on loud music after 11 pm. But seriously, there have been no recent mass cases of vandalism motivated by class hatred directed at convertible owners. Repairs are expensive, that's true. If we are talking about a complete replacement of the roof fabric, then even with the use of non-original materials, the amount of repair is unlikely to be lower than 100,000 rubles. Another thing is that it takes a really serious effort to cause serious damage to a modern multi-layered soft top. Cutting a 5-layer awning with a graceful movement of a clerical knife will not work.

4. Not safe

Here it is most logical to rely on the results of crash tests. For example, testing conducted in 2007 by the North American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) included crash testing a number of open models such as the Audi A4, Saab 9-3, Volvo C70, Volkswagen Eos, BMW 3 and Ford Mustang. . The convertibles were tested to the same standard as all cars for a frontal impact, a side impact that simulated being hit by an SUV, and a rear impact to see if the seat's headrest would break the driver's neck.

Summing up the test result, we can say that convertibles in recent years have almost caught up in strength with conventional cars. Given that the risk of serious injury in the case of unfastened seat belts in an open body is indeed higher than, say, in a sedan.

In fairness, it should be noted that in case of a rollover, despite the use of ingenious firing safety arches, convertibles are far from closed relatives. This was confirmed by the test Opel Cascada, Peugeot 308 CC, Renault Megane CC and Volkswagen Golf Cabrio, organized in 2014 by the German club ADAC, the largest public organization of motorists in Europe.

The results are disappointing, but rollover tests for closed models are not regularly carried out (for example, the well-known Euro NCAP does not include such a test), therefore, there is no way to compare the results. But a convertible is a priori less prone to rollover, if only because of the greater weight compared to the original model.

As a rule, in terms of the main technical parameters, convertibles are identical to closed counterparts, and parts from related models are widely used in the design. Therefore, the price of ordinary maintenance is no different from that of relatives with a closed body. This must be remembered when contacting the service in order to stop any attempts to make an extra charge for the exclusivity of the serviced car in time.

But you need to be prepared for the fact that some of the parts are not interchangeable even with the coupe, which affects the price, narrows the choice, and the search for spare parts will take time. Such parts include, for example, the body elements of the rear of the car. Especially often - the trunk lid and optics.

One of the most expensive parts of a convertible is the roof mechanism. In the event of a breakdown, the financial costs can be serious. Nevertheless, despite the complexity of the design, such systems do not suffer from regular failures.

Large manufacturers usually outsource the design and assembly of convertibles to third party contractors with considerable experience in building open models. Do you know what the Audi A4/S4 Cabriolet, Renault Mégane CC, Mercedes CLK convertible, Nissan Micra C+C and Volkswagen New Beetle Cabriolet have in common? The development of roof mechanisms and the final assembly of these models was carried out by Karmann, which is one of the leaders in the field of convertible construction.

6. Difficult to care for

For some reason, it is believed that along with a convertible, its owner needs to buy a subscription for daily dry cleaning of the interior. This takes place only if there is a light upholstery, and a weekly subscription is still needed. But beige leather and similar branded interior trim options are beautiful and not particularly practical for any body type. If the interior is decided in dark colors, then everything is not so scary.

The interior of my Lexus SC430 is trimmed in black leather, so when I often drive with the roof open, I wipe the interior a couple of times a week with special wet wipes, and then with microfiber. A similar procedure, only once a week, I always carried out with my other machines. The only thing that the convertible specificity added was the treatment of the leather with a special conditioner that protects it from ultraviolet radiation.

The roof awning does not require frequent maintenance. Road dirt is easily removed with a regular brush, similar to the one used to clean shoes. Fluff and dust are removed with a sticky clothes roller. A couple of times a year it is recommended to treat the awning with a special cleaning agent, followed by the application of water-repellent impregnation. The main thing to remember is that the product should not get on the paintwork, so it’s worth protecting the body by covering it with ordinary plastic wrap sold in a hardware store. The prices of automotive cosmetics for a convertible do not exceed the cost of average body polishes.

During year-round operation, in preparation for the cold, you will have to open the roof halfway, clean the visible parts of the mechanisms and pay attention to the numerous rubber seals, treating them with silicone.

In general, everything is easy and inexpensive

In addition to obvious advantages, such as a free tan, popularity among others and high chances of spending a hot night with a stranger you like, owning a convertible has a number of additional, purely practical bonuses.

1. Low risk of theft

If you are not a happy owner of a collectible model that needs to be kept as the apple of an eye, but the owner of one of the mass cars, then the chance of losing a car by someone else's will is small. The owner of, say, a Mercedes E-Class Cabrio, unlike a neighbor on a platform sedan, can sleep peacefully at night. Well, if car thieves are interested in a coupe almost 15 times less (5 two-doors versus 73 sedans according to the official statistics of thefts from the traffic police for the first half of 2016), then who needs an exotic convertible?

If we are talking about the mass segment, where the sad statistics still include the Ford Focus, which is stolen for analysis, then the coupe-cabriolet based on it can also, if not thrown open, then not particularly worry about the risks. Longer doors, new rear fenders, trunk lid - even without the roof, the difference between the cars is too great for the villains to be interested in such a car.

2. Profitability of the purchase

This, of course, is about buying a used car. There are not very many convertibles on our market, but a knowledgeable person always has plenty to choose from. Such a purchase can be interesting for a number of reasons.

Sometimes this is the only chance to get a two-door body style from your favorite brand. For example, in the Audi model range, after the 80-series coupe was discontinued and before the introduction of the A5, the A4-based convertible was the only way to get a stylish four-seater two-door from Ingolstadt.

If we take the coupe as a starting point, then the platform convertible, as a rule, will have less mileage, better condition and richer equipment. New, such models cost 30-40% more than other versions, were often delivered to order and were often the second or third cars in a wealthy family. The price of a used convertible, other things being equal, is still higher than that of a coupe. But open models are sold, especially when it comes to versions with a soft roof, not quickly, so there is always a chance for a good bargain.

The lowered roof of the car, the wind that develops the hair, a complete sense of freedom are not only available to financially secure drivers. There are several offers on the convertible market that deserve attention. We offer an overview of convertibles that can be purchased from 20 to 40 thousand dollars.

15. Audi A5 Convertible - $44,500

This offer is for real spenders. Among the most modern convertibles on the list, the A5 is a spacious 4-seater. It's not a traditional hardtop convertible, the soft top is a small downside to a luxury car that deserves a hefty price tag.

14. Mercedes Benz SLK 250 Convertible – $44,450

Hard top, leather interior and manual transmission - these characteristics belong to the luxury car Mercedes Benz SLK 250. For this price, you can get the best from Mercedes. And you can limit yourself to a minimum of options.

13. Audi TT Roadster Convertible - $43,795

Roadster fans dream of driving this car on the most famous serpentines in the world and giving it the opportunity to show all that it is capable of. The Audi TT can make a dream come true. This is not a Sunday car for a picnic trip and not a car for every day. It is designed to conquer the highway, as under its hood are 211 hp. and turbo engine. This sporty model is designed to drive fast and impress your friends.

12 Lexus IS 250C Convertible - $43,770

Perhaps someone does not like it when the wind blows in the face, so the car is equipped with a specially designed windshield. Under the hood of the IS 250C are 204 hp. If the IS 250 model was modified in 2014, then its type C has remained unchanged since 2013, perhaps because it is going to be discontinued. This is a signal for those who are interested in the model.

11 Nissan 370Z Roadster Convertible - $42,280

A luxurious look does not always correspond to high quality. No one doubts that the Nissan 370Z Roadster is an iconic model, but nothing more - little luggage space, no rear seats. You will not be able to take your friends with you on a trip. For $42,000, you can only get a chic appearance.

10. Volkswagen Eos Comfort Convertible - $36,460

The main feature of the Eos is its flawless hardtop, which, unfortunately, takes up the entire luggage compartment. But this slight drawback is minimized by the fact that there are 200 hp under the hood of the car. and a turbocharged engine. With three friends in the car, you can enjoy the ride on a warm summer evening.

9 Chevrolet Camaro 1 LT Convertible - $32,050

The Chevrolet Camaro is distinguished by its performance characteristics and impeccable appearance. $32,050 for a 323 hp V-6. and quite full-fledged rear seats - an acceptable price. You can take your hat off to Chevrolet's engineers who left the rear seats in favor of a hard top. If it's not important for someone to have a V-8 engine, then this car is made for him.

8 Chrysler 200 Touring Convertible - $28,945

Safety is the word that comes to mind when talking about the Chrysler 200 Touring. This is a reliable car with a spacious interior, it is easy to drive, but not designed for fast driving.

7 Ford Mustang V6 Convertible - $28,335

Another powerful car that can be a lot of fun to buy is the Ford Mustang with a 305 hp V-6 engine. This American high-speed classic car conquered many connoisseurs of beauty. The only drawback is that you will need to manually fold and unfold the roof. For almost $30,000, you can buy a powerful car and, as a bonus, a convertible.

6. Fiat 500 Abarth Cabrio - $26,895

There are times when a convertible cannot be called one hundred percent. This is when a large sunroof appears instead of a folding roof. This characteristic, plus the presence of a manual transmission - everything is created for a pleasant ride. However, for those who drive infrequently, this car is not suitable. The sporty model is designed for fast driving.

5. Volkswagen Beetle 2.5L Convertible - $25,990

The "women's car" tag attached to the "Bug" is thankfully a thing of the past after the public saw the Volkswagen Beetle 2.5L convertible, especially its streamlined design. Not everyone, speaking of a convertible, will think of the Beetle, and it is in no way inferior to the more famous models. The roof opens and closes in seconds, even while driving at 50 km/h. The beefy, turbocharged Beetle isn't made for luxury.

4 Mini Cooper Convertible - $25,945

The 4-seater is available for $25,945 base, with a full package of optional extras for $40,000. This is a compact and economical convertible that is worth the declared money.

3 Mazda Mx-5 Miata Sport Convertible - $24,515

The Miata is another sports car designed to conquer the highway. It's nice to ride in it on the highway on a hot summer day. It should be noted that the model is considered seasonal, especially for northern countries. But despite this, Miata is popular among convertibles on the market, as it has everything that a driver needs for such money.

2. Fiat 500C Pop Convertible - $20,495

Instead of the traditional folding roof, the Fiat 500C Pop convertible gets a sunroof. But it should also be noted that the roof stops before entering the luggage compartment, partially blocking the driver's rear view. In addition, the side racks do not give a full sense of space. The car is sold at an affordable price, but it's not exactly a convertible.

1. Convertible for two Passion - $ 18,680

Imperfection meets luxury in this electric car. The limited capabilities of the car do not give him the opportunity to feel confident on the highway. It's more suited for Sunday park rides than highway driving due to its poor aerodynamic and speed performance. We'll have to abandon it in favor of the modern car market.

If earlier four-seater convertibles had rather a sporty-romantic image of inaccessible models, now they are increasingly considered as a comfortable, stylish and profitable car for every day. Progress does not stand still. Almost without exception, convertibles have acquired convenient automatic drives for folding the roof. They are not deprived of the most advanced security and comfort systems. And the quality of finishes is often superior to comparable closed versions. After all, in a convertible - all for show. And this is a great opportunity for the automaker to show the public its vision of design and interior trim levels. In this review, we did not adhere to any price restrictions, divide the cars into regular and premium, but simply decided to collect all four-seater convertibles available on our market, suitable for year-round use. For this reason, exclusive sports convertibles with more than 350 hp. not included in this material.

"Audi A3 Cabriolet":
let's all sit down!

Debut of the second generation: 2012
Restyling: no
Wheelbase: 259.5 cm
Dimensions: 442.1x179.3x140.9 cm
Trunk volume: 320 l

- At the moment, the “A3” in the open version on our market is offered only in a front-wheel drive modification with a seven-speed robot, but with two TFSI engines to choose from - 1.4- and 1.8-liter, with a capacity of 125 and 180 hp, respectively . Four-wheel drive and a larger engine (300 hp) will be introduced on the “S3 Cabriolet” version.
- The fabric three-layer awning is lifted by an electric mechanism in 18 seconds at speeds up to 50 km / h. In the retracted state, it practically does not reduce the volume of the trunk.
– The vehicle is equipped with four airbags (front and side), as well as a knee airbag on the driver's side, ABS and ESP. For a surcharge, a lane keeping assistant is installed along with a high beam machine.
– The basic equipment of “Attraction” includes daytime running lights, automatic climate control and an audio system. The “Ambition” version adds a sports steering wheel and sports seats, fog lights, an on-board information system... An “Ambiente” version is also offered, which will have parking sensors and improved comfort seats.
– Options: heated seats, bi-xenon or full LED headlights, navigation and premium audio system with advanced features, adaptive cruise control, adjustable suspension, parking aid, rearview camera and more.
– The seats are finished with fabric (except for the “Ambiente” versions, which use a combined upholstery using the “Mono.Pur” material). Leather interior is a privilege of the “S3” model. However, the appearance of ordinary models can also be brought closer to the prestigious version by ordering an extensive styling package “S-Line”, which includes a combined leather / fabric or Alcantara trim.

Although the “A3 Cabriolet” is notable for its affordable price, the interior immediately reads belonging to a premium brand.

“For the open version of the new generation A3 model, they chose an elongated platform of the sedan of the same series, which made it possible to place a full-fledged second row in the cabin.”

Yuri URYUKOV, “Klaxon” No. 18 ‘2013

The recently debuted “A3 Cabriolet” not only retained but continued to develop the image of the compact sports convertible for which its predecessor became famous. The car has an expressive front and classic design, as in the prestigious models with a traditional soft top. Usually protruding safety arcs here have given way to an active safety system that automatically works in the event of a car overturn. The rich set of options available for the “A3 Cabriolet” inspires respect: natural leather interior trim, sports seats with developed lateral support, neck air deflectors with warm air, a soft top with improved sound insulation ...

The smallest convertible in the Audi line was built on the MQB modular platform, where aluminum and hot-formed steels are widely used. Thanks to them, the body has considerable strength. Excellent visibility and a comfortable low driving position literally provoke a dynamic driving style. In addition, the open version also has light responsive reactions. The suspension settings are quite comfortable, the optional “Audi Magnetic Ride” system allows you to vary the stiffness of the ride, and the proposed motors cannot be called weak - there is an option for 125, and there is also a 180 hp option. However, it is worth considering the recently introduced 300-horsepower modification with the “Quattro” drive to be truly sporty.

"Audi A5 Cabriolet":
for every taste

Debut: 2009
Restyling: 2012
Wheelbase: 275.1 cm
Dimensions: 462.6x185.4x138.3 cm
Trunk volume: 320-380 l

“The A5 is available in many modifications, starting with a 170-horsepower 1.8 TFSI, which is combined with a CVT, and ending with three-liter engines (with a six-speed robot), which are represented by a 272-horsepower V6 petrol. or a 245-horsepower turbodiesel. The average 225-horsepower 2.0 TFSI modification can be selected with any transmission - mechanical, CVT or robot. In the latter case, the model will also have all-wheel drive.
- Already in the standard version, an awning with enhanced thermal insulation and an automatic drive is installed on the car, which folds the roof in 17 and unfolds in 15 seconds at speeds up to 50 km / h.
The convertible is equipped with six airbags (front, side, window), ABS, ESP and a driver fatigue control system. Among the options offered are assistants that maintain a safe distance and follow the lane.
– Climate control, audio system, fog lights, LED daytime running lights, heated seats and electric drives, rain and light sensors, on-board information system are all standard equipment on all “A5 Cabriolets”.
- On request, xenon headlights, navigation, adaptive adjustable suspension, dynamic mode control system, heated rear seats are installed. With the “S5 Cabriolet” version, many of the above are already included as standard equipment.
- Sports seats, as well as sports trim in the “S-Line” style, are offered exclusively as an option for regular models, and only modifications with a V6 engine receive a leather interior instead of a fabric one. But for a surcharge, special Alcantara / leather trim or extended leather trim is available.

The interior of the A5 Cabriolet can be called an Audi classic - in terms of layout it resembles the A4 with its impeccable ergonomics.

“There are buttons on the center console of the convertible that allow you to select the driving mode that suits you: “comfort”, “dynamic” or “automatic”.

Vadim KHUDYAKOV, “Klaxon” No. 6 ‘2009

Behind the taut, sporty silhouette of the “A5 Cabriolet” is actually a car with a very wide user experience. Let's start with the fact that four people can fit in it without any hesitation - it has a really spacious interior. Moreover, on the second row, the fabric top in the raised state does not “press” on the passengers’ heads. The convertible is able to carry a fairly substantial amount of luggage - with the roof raised, the trunk volume increases from 320 to 380 liters. And since the three-layer awning is endowed with thermal insulation, the car can be used all year round. But the main argument in favor of the “A5 Cabrio” is a very wide range of modifications. There are simpler models, with mechanics. Available with a CVT, with a robot, with a diesel engine, with a powerful petrol “six” ... And this is without taking into account the prestigious 333-horsepower version of the “S5 Cabriolet”, which also meets the review criteria.

In terms of acoustic comfort, the open “five” will be able to approach a similar coupe if you order a roof with a 15 mm soundproof lining. There are no problems with smooth running either - partly because the convertible, due to powerful steel struts-amplifiers on the bottom, actually moved into the “weight category” of business sedans, which are characterized by imposing driving manners. For this reason, when choosing this model, it is still worth giving preference to more powerful modifications so as not to complain about weak dynamics later.

“BMW 4 Series Convertible”:
warm embrace

Debut: 2014
Restyling: no
Wheelbase: 281 cm
Dimensions: 463.8x182.5x138.4 cm
Trunk volume: 220-370 l

- Of the extensive range of BMW engines for the convertible, only three are offered, all equipped with a turbocharger: a two-liter diesel engine with a capacity of 184 hp, a gasoline “four” of the same volume with a return of 245 hp. and in-line three-liter 306-horsepower "six". Only modifications with an eight-speed automatic are now delivered to Russia, although Europeans are also offered six-speed mechanics for the same versions.
– Hard three-piece top designed by Webasto. It takes about 20 seconds to move from one extreme position to another. The front passengers are protected from drafts by a windscreen and deflectors in the seat backs.
– In a rollover situation, the bars behind the second row head restraints will fire in less than 0.2 seconds, after which the car will automatically turn on the SOS signal and report its location to the rescue services. Safety is also provided by six airbags, ABS, ESP and an automatic braking system in emergency situations.
- The European “base” is not offered on the Russian market. Models come to us with an automatic, bi-xenon headlights, dual-zone climate control and heated seats, a BMW Professional multimedia system with a 6.5-inch color screen, rear parking sensors and a rain sensor. The petrol models also come standard with adaptive cruise control.
– Both the wind screen and the warm collar system will have to be ordered as options when purchasing. They also include front parking sensors, navigation technology, TV, Internet applications, adaptive or LED headlights, active chassis with variable stiffness or sports suspension, improved seats, etc.
– Initially, the model is already offered in three design lines, and the possibilities for individualization are the widest in the review.

A variety of luxurious finishes are available for the interior of the BMW 4 Series Convertible.

“The car looks sportier and more muscular. But from the driver's seat it seems that you are sitting in an ordinary three-ruble note - most of the interior details are taken from the third series sedan.

Dmitry BARINOV, “Klaxon” No. 16 ‘2013

Having replenished the model indexing system with a new figure, BMW was a little cunning. After all, the basis of the entire fourth series is the chassis of a modern “three-ruble note” sedan. Therefore, the coupe-cabriolet presented here can be considered a direct successor to the open third series of the previous generation.

The layout is traditional for BMW: with a motor shifted behind the front axle to the passenger compartment, with rear-wheel drive and equal weight distribution along the axes. But unlike its predecessor, the new “four” has practically no body panels in common with the donor sedan, which gives the model individuality. There is also an emphasis on sportiness: narrow headlights, ventilation “gills” behind the front wheels, extended rear wheel arches ... The latter is by no means a props, because the car's track has really increased compared to the sedan - two centimeters in front and three behind. For better handling, the suspension was completely recalibrated, at the same time reducing the ground clearance by a centimeter.

But if the BMW Series 4 coupe is a “driver’s car” without a doubt, the open-top version is more of a pleasure car. This is due to the additional 230 kg of weight that arose due to the large roof with a complex folding mechanism. But in the cabin - a full four seats. No one complains about tightness or lack of heat - the roof provides thermal insulation in winter no worse than that of a sedan. And with the top retracted, the front passengers will be treated with warm air “collars” from the deflectors in the seatbacks.

Infiniti Q60 Convertible:
under a new name

Debut: 2009
Restyling: 2014
Wheelbase: 285 cm
Dimensions: 466x185x140 cm
Trunk volume: 333 l (with folded roof - 70 l)

- There is no alternative to the 3.7-liter naturally aspirated V6 with 333 hp, which is combined only with a seven-speed automatic, in the “Q60 Cabrio”. The motor pulls, is well balanced, however differs in the increased consumption of gasoline. The transmission has a manual control function and a sport mode.
“When closed, the Q60 Cabrio is hard to distinguish from a coupe – the hardtop elements are so carefully fitted together that the characteristic joints are almost invisible. The second advantage of the roof is first-class sound insulation. But when folded, it takes up almost the entire useful volume of the trunk.
- Six airbags, pre-tensioned belts, electronic stabilization, traction control and anti-lock systems in the “Q60 Cabrio” are complemented by adaptive bi-xenon headlights, all of which are standard equipment.
– The standard equipment of the model already includes various sensors and electric drives, an advanced multi-channel audio system “Bose Open Air” with HDD and USB, Russian navigation, adaptive climate control “Plasma Cluster”, taking into account outboard driving conditions, heated and ventilated seats, parking display, cruise control and windscreen.
– There are no options for the model. When ordering a car, the client is only offered to choose an improved trim package instead of the standard one. For example, with aluminum decor and light blue leather, or red maple wood decor and crimson seat upholstery.
- Solid size 19 alloy wheels, branded analog clock and leather trim will be on all "Q60 Cabrio". Also, the car differs from the “Q60” coupe by the presence of a spoiler and the original design of the front and rear bumpers.

The interior looks expensive - it combines beautiful forms, quality materials and elegant details such as an analog clock.

“Despite a decent mass, it maneuvers with ease. This is helped by an effective hydraulic booster, as well as adequate coordination of the machine with an elastic and revving motor.

Ruslan TARASOV, “Klaxon” No. 10 ‘2012

Since the premiere, it has not undergone any technical changes, although since this year the model has been sold under a new name in all markets: “Q60 Cabrio” instead of “G37 Cabrio”. However, the status of a long-liver in our review does not mean at all that the model is obsolete. The salon looks expensive and modern thanks to a successful combination of high-quality finishing materials, well-thought-out ergonomics and an advanced multimedia system, which was designed specifically for an open body. The advantages of the “Q60 Cabrio” also include a variety of equipment. On the downside, the second row is relatively cramped for the longest-wheelbase model in the review.

Infiniti convertible buyers don't have a choice of modifications, but the proposed 333-hp 3.7-liter V6 pairs well with a seven-speed automatic. With such an engine, the Q60 Cabrio simply cannot be slow, despite the heavy hardtop folding mechanism. The suspension will not spoil the pleasant sensations from a dynamic ride - for the open-top version, the engineers reconfigured the shock absorbers so that any irregularities are not perceived painfully.

Loses “Q60 Cabrio” in another dispute on speed, characteristic exclusively for coupe-cabrio. It takes 25 seconds to completely fold the hardtop, and to raise it again, you have to stop - this is impossible in motion. Finally, when folded, the roof takes up so much space in the trunk that it can barely fit a small backpack.

"Mercedes-Benz E-Class Convertible":
defender

Debut of the third generation: 2010
Restyling: 2013
Wheelbase: 276 cm
Dimensions: 470.3x178.6x139.8 cm
Trunk volume: 300-390 l

– Although the “E-Class Cabrio” is available in many modifications, the model is presented on our market in only two versions - with a two-liter in-line turbocharged “four” and a 3.5-liter V6 (respectively, with a capacity of 210 and 250 hp .). All use a seven-speed automatic.
– The multilayer fabric roof can be folded (or raised) at speeds up to 40 km/h. The process takes 20 seconds. When folded, it reduces the useful volume of the trunk by about a quarter.
- In addition to automatic arcs, six airbags, ESP, anti-slip and anti-lock systems, the E-Class Cabrio is equipped with a collision warning, automatic high beam. For a surcharge - side airbags for the second row, lane control, active tracking of the distance and dead zones.
- In the "Special Series" - and only such models are presented in Russia - a list of serial equipment, which already includes an adjustable chassis, climate control, an audio system, various sensors and electric drives, expanded with crankcase protection, a parking assistant, heated front seats and heated windshield washer system. In the V6 model, the “Comand Online” system is added to them.
– Options: reversing camera, navigation, special “comfort” and “practical” packages for the convertible, multi-contour seats with ventilation, two sets of AMG sports upgrades, advanced audio system, sports suspension, “Air Scarf” warm air intake to the neck.
– All vehicles feature leather upholstery, metallic paint and light alloy wheels. You can give the model individuality with the help of numerous styling packages for the exterior and interior. The color of the roof can also be chosen from four options.

The interior repeats the “tseshka” of the previous generation in layout, but not in decoration - here the decoration materials are much better.

“The convertible will now boast the same advanced driving assistance that was recently introduced to the updated E-Class.”

Ruslan TARASOV, “Klaxon” No. 12 ‘2013

Like the “E-Class Coupe” version, the only four-seater convertible in the Mercedes-Benz range is not based on the platform of the E-class business sedan, but on the “truck” of the C-class model (of the previous generation). But that is why the model is distinguished by low weight, good dynamic characteristics and commendable driving habits. The variable-rate adaptive suspension, which is standard on the Convertible, switches from soft comfort mode to hard sport mode at the touch of a button. The branded “7G-Tronic” is also able to adapt to the active driver -

machine with manual control. A multi-layer insulated soft top ensures comfort in all weather, while a wind-shut cap, automatic windscreen and branded air scarves ensure open-top driving pleasure.

A year ago, the car underwent a major update. Having retained all its practical qualities (here you can fold the second-row seats), the convertible has noticeably changed in the design of the front part, received advanced adaptive lighting technology and a lot of driver's assistants, some of which even included in the basic equipment. The model was previously considered one of the best in terms of active and passive safety, and now it has raised the bar for caring for drivers and passengers to the highest level. At the same time, several new powerful and efficient turbo engines appeared in the engine range - however, in Russia they are represented only by an in-line two-liter “four” on the E250 Cabrio modification.

Peugeot 308CC:
in sports style

Debut: 2008
Restyling: 2011
Wheelbase: 260.5 cm
Dimensions: 440x181.7x142.6 cm
Trunk volume: 266-465 l

– The 1.6-liter straight-four with direct injection and turbocharging is the only option offered for the Peugeot 308CC. This engine, developed by PSA together with BMW, is combined with a six-speed adaptive automatic.
- The two-piece coupe-cabriolet roof transforms in just 20 seconds - a record for a hard top. After folding the roof, only half of the impressive initial volume in the trunk of 465 liters remains.
Roll-over and roof-closed safety bars, front, side and curtain airbags provide the model with a high level of passive safety. Anti-slip, anti-lock and stabilizing systems are standard.
– The plain version “308 CC” is not available. The model will certainly be equipped with rain and light sensors, climate control, heated seats, a supply of warm air to the neck, an audio system with navigation and Bluetooth, xenon adaptive head optics and fog lights, cruise control and electric seat adjustments.
- For an extra charge, front parking sensors, a memory system for settings, a drive for folding mirrors, a convenient function for simultaneously opening / closing the roof along with side windows, a windscreen, and a powerful JBL Hi-Fi audio system are installed.
– The only “Feline” package available on our market uses chrome trim and high-quality leather upholstery (four color options). The dashboard with white scales and all seats, including separate rear ones, will be made in a sporty style.

The open "308 CC" interior looks much richer and more luxurious than a simple hatchback "Peugeot".

“On the go, the 308 is pleasant, but does not set you up for a gambling ride. The steering wheel is too light, apparently based on a female audience.”

David HAKOBYAN, “Klaxon” No. 11 ‘2012

As you know, the entire family of the Peugeot 308 model of the previous generation was made under the motto “More sport!” - than the engineers of the French company wanted to give more attractiveness to an ordinary car for every day. And, perhaps, this was most clearly manifested in the two-door coupe-cabriolet “Peugeot 308 CC”. The model has a memorable and rather aggressive appearance. What is worth only one “snapdragon” of the radiator grille, complemented by racing air intakes and xenon headlights. The coupe-cabriolet looks no less impressive from behind due to diffusers on the bumper and an elegant spoiler. “Athletic” external data are reinforced, by the way, by good handling achieved by using gas-filled shock absorbers, although the dynamic data of the model is one of the most modest in the review.

Despite belonging to the golf class, “308 SS” turned out to be quite spacious and practical. Even with the roof up, the convertible can be viewed as a full-fledged four-seater, although the low, sloping rear window somewhat limits headroom in the second row. By the way, a rigid multi-component “hard-top” with an automatic drive for this model is manufactured by Magna, so you don’t have to worry about the reliability and quality of this critical unit. The interior trim was also made at a high level: leather, chrome, soft plastic... Peugeot was aware that the potential buyer of the 308CC was a much more demanding person than the bulk of customers.
