Of course, you shouldn’t meddle with testing these cars on a plowed field with black soil in rainy weather, maybe they will take you out of this mud, but as they say, you shouldn’t tempt fate, yet these cars are designed for ordinary moderate off-road and dirt, and not for total potholes and continuous driving through plowed and muddy black soil fields.

Sportage is rightfully considered one of the most popular crossovers in history. And this is not surprising, because the model, which was presented back in 1992, is still in incredibly high demand among motorists. Interestingly, since 2004, the car has been produced in Russia. By the way, Sportage 2 debuted in the same year.

In 2010, the third generation crossover was presented. By the way, this modification was recognized as the best at the end of the year in a number of European countries. In 2015, in Frankfurt, the fourth generation Sportage was exhibited to the public, which was awarded the prestigious Red Dot 2016 award.

The developers of Kia Motors, analyzing the success of their previous crossovers, decided to increase their success and introduced the new Sorento in 2002. Interestingly, the first generation model was considered an SUV by all European standards. In the spring of 2009, the Sorento 2 was presented at the Seoul Motor Show, which could already boldly position itself as a crossover.

In 2014, the third generation car debuted in Paris. It is worth noting that the developers also proposed a 7-seater modification, which was called.

No one was surprised by the obvious similarity of the exterior of both crossovers, since the Sorento developers immediately announced that they planned to follow in the footsteps of the “old man” Sportage. Considering its volume, it is not surprising that the Sorento power unit can provide 175 horsepower, while the counterpart's engine can only produce 150 horses. This did not directly affect the dynamism indicators. For example, it takes 11 seconds to accelerate a Sorento from zero to a hundred, and 11.1 seconds for a Sportage. Car engines are quite economical, Sorento consumes - 8.8 liters on average, against 8.2 liters of its today's opponent.

As for the dimensions, the Sorento is 205 mm longer than its counterpart and 65 mm higher. The wheelbase of the Sorento is 2700 mm, which is 30 mm more than that of the Sportage. The positive trend for the Sorento continues in terms of ground clearance - 185 mm, against 182 mm for today's opponent.

There is, however, one significant "but". The entry-level "Classic" means unopposed front-wheel drive and manual transmission - neither of which can be obtained in the base "Kia" for any money. If you are ready to be content with such a car - decent equipment, a spacious body with a roomy trunk, high ceiling and doorways, a good ground clearance of 185 mm - the gasoline Sorento will be an excellent option. In any case, much better than the middle class station wagon - it is not surprising that the latter are in less and less demand not only in Europe, but also in Russia.

"Premium" will require an additional payment of 100 thousand. But in addition to the panoramic roof and the constant ground clearance system, you will get 19-inch wheels of dubious value.

However, if you rightly believe that in winter in Russia, all-wheel drive can be very useful, but you live in a city and do not want to suffer in traffic jams with a clutch pedal and a “mechanics” lever, the picture immediately becomes more complicated. Because both with a 4x4 transmission and with an automatic transmission, the Sorento is combined with a minimum of the Comfort package and will require 140 thousand (with an automatic), 170 thousand (with all-wheel drive) or 240,000 rubles in the Comfort version -4WD-AT".

Of course, such a car is more convenient and prettier - its “foglights” are trained to highlight turns, a grid and a shelf are provided in the trunk, the seats are equipped with heating, climate control is divided into two zones, there is ESP and parking sensors, and for an additional 40 thousand you can get two seats of the third row. That's just the difference with the diesel modification in this case will be only 100 thousand rubles. Even if you count the official fuel consumption figures, this money will almost pay off after three years of operation. However, I very much doubt that the all-wheel drive "Sorento-2, 4" with an "automatic" will fit into 12.3 liters per hundred in the city. For more than five hundred miles, of which four-fifths were on the highway, I personally achieved a result of 12.9 / 100 km.

Many experts call the period of the 2000s the era of Asian crossovers. Indeed, just at that time there was a real automobile boom, in which SUVs played a key role. If before, European models were the undoubted leaders, then, with the beginning of the 21st century, the situation has changed dramatically in favor of Korean and Japanese cars.

Not only are they fighting for a place in the sun with cars from the Old World, but in recent years, competition between the Asian concerns themselves has intensified. It is about this case that we will talk today. In this article, we will compare the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento - two crossovers that can already be safely called old-timers in the automotive industry.

Santa Fe's career began in 2000. Analysts, even before the release of the model, predicted a great future for the car. One of the main reasons for this was considered the use of a modular platform from the legendary Hyundai Sonata. Indeed, according to most experts, the use of this type of body is a direct path to success. Due to the fact that the car was originally created for the US market, marketers and the name picked up the right one - Santa Fe. For those who do not know, the city located in the US state of New Mexico is also called by itself. The great demand for the new product prompted the company to think that it was time to deliver the crossover to Europe.

After several small updates, in 2006, the first car of the second generation descended from the assembly line of an enterprise located in the state of Alabama. The new Santa Fe broke all sales records of its predecessor, and, for a while, became the so-called "best seller" in the automotive market. Then there were two restylings, and, in the end, Santa Fe 3 was introduced. It is worth noting that the developers also created a 7-seater modification of the car. By the way, it was twice recognized as the safest in the class.

As a response to a competitor, Hyundai, in the winter of 2002, the premiere of the new Sorento took place. By analogy with its today's counterpart, the car was also named after the city, but this time the resort of Sorrento, located in Italy. Interestingly, the first generation model was classified as an SUV, as there were some differences between European and Asian automotive regulations. It cannot be said that the Sorento greatly outperformed its competitors, but this did not prevent it from showing good sales results.

In 2009, the second generation model was introduced. The developers have worked on the dimensions and features of the body, so no one had any doubts that the Sorento is a crossover. In 2014, as part of an event in Paris, the presentation of the third generation Sorento took place. This event plunged motorists into a pleasant shock, as representatives of the Korean company did not inform anyone about the upcoming premiere. It was a fantastic marketing ploy, as already at the end of the first month of sales, all possible records were broken. Interestingly, in the Russian market, the crossover is called the Kia Sorento Prime.

Given all the above information, when asked which is better, in terms of history - Kia Sorento or Hyundai Santa Fe, the second option looks more attractive.

Perhaps today, Hyundai designers have nightmares about the time when the first generation Santa Fe came out. The exterior of the debut version of the crossover, to put it mildly, was not impressed. In turn, the third-generation model already boasted one of the brightest exteriors in its class. I would especially like to note the ease and ease with which the developers managed to combine dynamism and sophistication in the appearance of Santa Fe. Interestingly, the car has already twice been recognized as the best in terms of design.

Kia designers, unlike their competitors, immediately put a lot of effort into decorating the appearance of the Sorento. In the exterior of the car, notes of aggressiveness are visible, which gives the model an advantage over competitors. It is worth noting that the debut version was considered an SUV, so the overall dimensions were impressive.

The appearance of the second generation has changed markedly. Fortunately for the fans of the company - for the better. The car has noticeably decreased and received a completely new front end. The appearance of the third-generation crossover has undergone only minor improvements, among which I would like to note the installation of new optics and foglights.

Both Czechs and Koreans managed to achieve their goals. Sorento Prime and Kodiak look really fresh and interesting.

Distinctive features of the Kia Sorento Prime are a massive hood pulled up, fashionable narrow headlights, a huge radiator grille. There are no special design frills in the appearance of the Korean, and where can they come from if the German Peter Schreyer was responsible for the design. Sorento Prime looks dynamic, powerful and quite European.

Kodiaq outwardly looks more compact than its competitor. The reason is obvious - its body is more proportional and balanced. It is not for nothing that Skoda designer Josef Kaban boasts that all his cars evoke mostly positive feedback - he really knows how to catch the tastes of the majority and reforge them in his own way. The Sorento Prime is 8 cm longer than the Skoda Kodiak, the cars are identical in the other two overall dimensions, although the Korean still has a slight advantage. Despite KIA's superior length, the Czech SUV has a longer wheelbase.

As in the case of the previous generation Sorento, Skoda Kodiaq seriously overtook him in terms of luggage space. But this is not surprising - in terms of capacity, Skoda cars have always been ahead of the rest.

The difference in the price classes of the Skoda Kodiaq and Kia Sorento Prime is most visible in the interior design. The undoubted advantage of Sorento Prime over Kodiak is, of course, in larger and more powerful engines. "Korean" is equipped with a 3.3-liter gasoline engine and a 2.2-liter turbodiesel. Depending on the type of engine, 200 or 250 “horses” are hidden under the hood of the crossover. It is certainly very pleasant to boast of such a number of horses. But when it comes to the cost of the car and fuel consumption, Kodiaq with its modest units of 1.4 and 2 liters and power up to 190 horsepower is beginning to seem like not such an outsider in comparison with the Korean counterpart.

Since January 2017, Kia has introduced a new 2.4 GDI direct injection gasoline engine with 188 hp into the engine lineup, which has become the base for the Sorento Prime. However, only a 5-seat version of the crossover is available with this engine, and it “eats” 2 liters of fuel per 100 km (in mixed mode) than its counterpart, the Skodovsky 2.0 TSI.

The Kodiaq has both a 6-speed manual transmission and two DSG options. Sorento Prime buyers were not given a choice - a car with both engine options is equipped with only a 6-speed automatic transmission.
