Therefore, when he wanted to get hold of a drift car - a car for spectacular sliding in a skid - he did not think for a long time, but got down to business himself. Fortunately, he has a whole workshop at his disposal. The idea was this: the car should be able to drift not for the sake of sports victories but for fun. Accordingly, his appearance should also be "fun", and technical filling may well not be the most "evil". Thus, rear-wheel drive BMWs of two models, the E21 and E34, were chosen as the donor of the units, but there was a hitch about the outer shell. I wanted the drift car to look somehow unexpected, catchy ...

And why not Zaporozhets? thought Ruslan. What could be more unexpected than a drifting Zaporozhets in clouds of dust and burning rubber? At first, the author himself liked the idea, then it was approved by authoritative colleagues. On the basis of such initial data, the final concept of the project took shape: let it be Zaporozhets on the outside, and BMW on the inside! That's just about the ZAZ model, clarification was required. The iconic "humpback" was not good: the trunk is too short - the engine cannot be squeezed in longitudinally, and the base is too small - it will not be easy to keep the corner while sliding in a drift. Therefore, a longer ZAZ-968 was chosen as a prototype, which was soon purchased.

After all, in addition to the desire to maintain a given exterior style, you can break a couple of golden proportions of car design and mutilate the car to obscene. It seems that the authors of this project with proportions guessed everything correctly. The car turned out to be quite nice, turning from a budget Tudor into a kind of cab forward - with wheels moved apart at the corners of the body and a cab placed in the center of the base. It was not easy, but I had to tinker even more with the “transfer” of the power unit forward. Since the difference in the track size of the two cars is also noticeable (16-17 cm), the wheel arches had to be widened accordingly. At the back, it turned out to be easier thanks to the air intake channel that has become essentially unnecessary, and at the front I had to be smarter more frankly - using expander pads. The splicing points of the two bodies were connected by welding and reinforced to maintain the load-bearing capacity. The joints of the outer panels were made of fiberglass.

As for the mechanics

As befits a BMW, the engine is now positioned longitudinally at the front. two liter gasoline unit borrowed from the BMW E34 along with its "native" five-speed gearbox gears. The suspension also passed to Zaporozhets from the BMW E21 - entirely, up to the thrust cups of the body, as well as levers, springs and shock absorbers front and rear and steering rack with a trapezoid.
