Checking the hydraulic compensator of the Mitsubishi 4G64 / 4G69 engine

Immediately after starting the engine or while the engine is running, if an extraneous (rattling) sound is heard that comes from the hydraulic compensator, turn it off and perform the following check.

Check engine oil and add or change oil if necessary.

If the amount of oil is insufficient, then air enters through the oil intake strainer into the lubrication system channel.

If the amount of oil is too high, the oil is agitated excessively as the crankshaft rotates, and a large amount of air enters the oil.

Air and oil will not easily separate if the oil is old (lost its properties - degenerated) and the amount of air in the oil increases.

If air enters the high pressure chamber of the hydraulic compensator, it will be compressed inside it during the opening of the valve, and as a result of this the hydraulic compensator plunger will "sag" and increased valve noise will be heard.

This is the same effect as if the valve clearance is not adjusted (too much clearance).

The operation of the Mitsubishi 4G69 / 4G64 hydraulic compensator will become normal when the air that has entered it is removed.

To bleed air from the hydraulic compensator, start the engine and gently depress the accelerator pedal several times (10 times or less).

If the increased noise has disappeared, then the air has been removed from the pressure chamber, and the operation of the hydraulic compensator has returned to normal.

First, gradually increase the engine speed from idling to 3000 rpm (within 30 seconds), and then gradually decrease the engine speed back to idling (within 30 seconds).

If the vehicle is parked on a slope for a long time, sometimes the amount of oil in the hydraulic lifter may decrease and air will enter the high pressure chamber when the Mitsubishi 4G64 GDI engine is started.

If the car is parked for a long time, oil will come out of the lubrication system channel.

Therefore, it takes a short period of time to supply oil to the hydraulic compensator (air can sometimes get into the high pressure chamber).

If the noise persists, check the hydraulic lifter according to the following procedure.

Stop the engine.

Set the number one piston to TDC on the compression stroke.

Press the rocker arms and check if the rocker moves down or not.

Slowly rotate the crankshaft 360° clockwise.

Check the rocker arms of the Mitsubishi 4G64 / 4G69 engine valves.

If the valve rocker moves down when pressed, replace the hydraulic compensator.

When replacing a hydraulic lifter, bleed all of the hydraulic lifters, and then follow the initial procedures.

In addition, if excessive resistance is felt when pressing the rocker arm, and the rocker arm does not go down, then the hydraulic compensator is in order and the cause of the malfunction is different.

Checking and adjusting the ignition timing of the Mitsubishi 4G64 / 4G69 engine

Insert a paper clip into the 1-pin connector between the ignition coil primary circuit and the noise suppression resistor.

The connector must not be disconnected.

Insert a paperclip along the tab on the opposite side of the connector latch.

Connect the tachometer test lead to relieve voltage in the primary circuit of the ignition coil to the paper clip installed in the connector.

Do not use MUT or MUT-II. If MUT or MUT-II is connected to the diagnostic connector, the instrument will show the current ignition timing, not the base angle.

Start the Mitsubishi 4G69/4G64 engine and let it idle.

Check that the idle speed corresponds to the nominal value. Rated value: 750±100 rpm.

Turn off the "ignition" (key position "OFF").

Install a stroboscope.

Remove the waterproof plug from the basic ignition timing connector (brown).

Using a wire with a connector, connect the output of the basic advance angle adjustment connector to ground.

Grounding this connector puts the Mitsubishi 4G64/4G69 engine into basic ignition timing mode.

Start the engine and let it idle.

Check the value of the basic ignition timing, which should be within the specified limits. Rated value: 5° to TDC ±2°

If the basic ignition timing does not correspond to the nominal value, then adjust the ignition timing by turning the distributor housing.

The ignition timing will decrease if the ignition distributor is turned clockwise and will increase if the ignition distributor is turned counterclockwise.

After adjusting the ignition timing, carefully tighten the fastening nut so as not to move the ignition distributor.

Stop the engine, disconnect the connector wire from the ignition timing adjustment connector terminal (brown), and install a waterproof plug into the connector.

Start the Mitsubishi 4G64/4G69 engine and check that the ignition timing is correct.

Rated value: approximately 8° BTDC.

Reliability, problems and repair of the Mitsubishi 4G69 2.4 liter engine.

An updated version of 4G64, under the name 4G69, was released in 2003 on Mitsubishi Grandis and Mitsubishi Outlander cars and became the latest representative of the Sirius engine family (which, in addition to our engine, also included: 4G63T, 4G61, 4G62, 4G63, 4G64, 4G67, 4G69, 4D65 and 4D68). In the new engine, the height of the cylinder block was reduced to 229 mm relative to its predecessor, the cylinder diameter was increased to 87 mm (was 86.5 mm), lightweight pistons were installed (278 g versus 354 g on 4G64), a light crankshaft (14.9 kg versus 15.8 kg on 4G64 ) and connecting rods (530 gr vs. 623 gr). The cylinder head is installed new, with a system for changing the valve timing on the intake shaft and the height of the MIVEC valves, the diameter of the intake valves has increased to 34 mm, exhaust to 30.5 mm. There are no hydraulic lifters on the 4G69, so every 40-50 thousand km it is necessary to adjust the valves, the clearances of the inlet valves for hot 0.2 mm, exhaust 0.3 mm.

In addition, a version with direct fuel injection GDI was also produced, the compression ratio on such engines was increased to 11.5. The intake manifold has been completely redesigned, along with the exhaust has undergone modifications.Timing belt drive, belt width was reduced, the resource remained the same, about 90 thousand km.Along with the belt, the balance shaft belt also changes.

Currently, the 4G69 engine is produced under license for automobile companies from China, while Mitsubishi itself installs a more modern version of 4B12 instead.

Problems and disadvantages of Mitsubishi 4G69 2.4 liter engines.

In terms of illnesses and malfunctions, 4G69 resembles 4G63, however, vibration problems are now much less common, on the other hand, a more modern engine loves high-quality gasoline and saving on it, at least, will lead to an early replacement of the catalyst. Otherwise, the engine is excellent, careful attitude, high-quality oil, gasoline and regular maintenance will ensure the most trouble-free operation, the 4G69 resource in this mode can step over 400 thousand km.

Mitsubishi 4G69 engine tuning

Turbo. 4G69T

The only more or less reasonable option for tuning a standard 2.4 liter engine is to buy and install a cylinder head with everything related from Lancer Evolution. This option was considered, moreover, there are whole bolt-on kits for turbocharging 4G69 on sale.

According to the Mitsubishi manufacturer's regulations, the 4G69 engine does not contain direct information about its parameters in the designation. The marking is deciphered as follows:

  • 4 - number of cylinders;
  • G - type of fuel (gasoline or Gasoline in English);
  • 6 - Sirius series with a cast-iron block;
  • 9 - motor version number within the series (last).

The manufacturer has three more "star" series of motors - Astron, Saturn and Orion. In its series, the 4G69 version is the final model range. Since 2013, Mitsubishi has been using more modern 4B12 engines, and the old version of 4G69 has been used by Chinese automakers who have officially licensed it.

Specifications 4G69 2.4 l/165 l. With.

To provide a torque of 219 Nm and a power of 165 hp. With. the four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine uses the following technical solutions:

  • in-line engine diagram with a cast-iron block;
  • gas distribution mechanism SOHC;
  • MIVEC phase adjustment technology;
  • long-stroke ShPG with a piston stroke of 100 mm with a cylinder diameter of 87 mm.

An important feature is the impact of the piston / valve when the timing belt breaks. In other words, the 4G69 motor bends the valve at speeds of 3200 min-1. If the break occurred at idle, the geometry of the valve stems may remain intact, without damage.

In fact, the 4G69 version of the ICE is a forcing of the 4G64 engine for 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander and Grandis cars. Modernization was carried out with the sole purpose of increasing the power drive power for heavy Mitsubishi models. Full technical specifications 4G69 look like:

The official manual not only contains a description of the parameters, but also clearly defined terms for replacing lubricants and consumables. Here are step-by-step instructions that allow you to carry out major repairs in the garage on your own.

Design features

The 4G69 engine was designed based on an earlier version of the same 4G64 series. The main nuances of the design were:

  • a long piston stroke of 100 mm, which required lightening of the connecting rods from 623 to 530 g, the crankshaft from 15.8 to 14.9 kg and the pistons from 354 to 278 g;
  • cylinder volumes increased to 2.4 liters, made of cast-iron liners inside a block of the same material;
  • reduction in block height to 284 mm with a simultaneous increase in cylinder diameter to 87 mm;
  • single-shaft SOHC 16V cylinder head with integrated MIVEC system;
  • increase in valve size to 30.5 mm and 34 mm (inlet, outlet, respectively);
  • timing drive with a narrow toothed belt with a resource of about 90,000 km;
  • the presence of one balancing shaft with a belt drive;
  • EGR exhaust recirculation system, which increases the European protocol of engine environmental friendliness, but reduces the power and resource of the intake tract.

An important feature of the atmospheric version of the 4G69 was the modified attachments. At first, the management changed the design of the intake tract, then the exhaust manifold had to be upgraded. This power drive does not have a turbo version, but there is potential for do-it-yourself inflatable and mechanical tuning.

The MIVEC system was designed to increase engine power by 13%:

  • 8% due to controlled valve lift;
  • 2.5% due to the accelerated supply of the fuel mixture;
  • 1.5% by reducing the resistance in the exhaust valves;
  • 1% due to a slight increase in the volume of the combustion chambers.

As a result of testing, additional bonuses were revealed - the stability of the internal combustion engine, an increase in environmental standards and fuel economy. On the other hand, the fluid coupling is sensitive to the quality of the oil.

The single shaft SOHC timing system for controlling 16 valves is not the easiest technical solution. Which also reduces the resource and maintainability of the motor. Every 30 - 40 thousand kilometers, it is necessary to adjust the thermal clearances of the valves.

In the 4G6 (Sirius) series, this power drive is the only one equipped with a phase control system. There are no official modifications for this motor.

Advantages and disadvantages

The complex device of the internal combustion engine provided high performance properties - a moment of 219 Nm and a power of 165 hp. With. The disadvantages of the design in this case were:

  • high requirements for fuel/lubricant quality dramatically increase the operating budget;
  • after 30 - 40 thousand mileage, a visit to the service station is necessary to adjust the valve clearances;
  • mounted partly has a low resource (pump, catalyst, fuel pump).

On the other hand, the engine characteristics are initially high, there are no power dips at medium speeds. The resource is above 400,000 km, and taking into account several re-sleeves, the motor can be attributed to the "millionaires".

Repair and tuning can be done on your own, the attachment is well arranged, does not interfere with the maintenance of the engine.

List of car models in which it was installed

From 2003 to the present day, the 4G69 engine has been mounted on the following Mitsubishi car models:

  • Grandis - 2003 - 20111, minivan;
  • Lancer - 2004 - 2006, station wagon and sedan;
  • Outlander - 2004 - 2006, original crossover;
  • Galant - 2004 - 2012, a sedan with a sporty exterior;
  • Eclipse - 2006 - 2012, a sports car in a coupe;
  • Zinger - since 2008, mid-size minivan.

The power drive is installed in the Chinese H3 and H5 cars from Great Wall Haval and the BYD S6 full-size crossover and Geely EC-8 sedan. 4G69 is used in budget Chinese Geely EC8 all-wheel drive pickups and Hawtai Terracan SUVs.

Service Schedule 4G69 2.4 l/165 l. With.

Capricious to the quality of oil and gasoline, the 4G69 naturally aspirated engine should be serviced especially carefully:

  • the timing belt drive is replaced after 90,000 km, attachments after 50,000 km;
  • it is recommended to adjust the thermal clearances of the valves after 30,000 runs;
  • crankcase ventilation cleaning is provided by the manufacturer every 2 years;
  • the developer recommends changing the engine oil along with the filter after 10,000 km;
  • the fuel filter is changed after 20,000 runs;
  • the manufacturer's manual states that the air filter needs to be updated annually;
  • additives from the factory inside the antifreeze lose their properties after 40,000 km;
  • the resource of candles in the DIS-2 engine system is limited to 20,000 mileage;
  • after 60,000 km, the intake manifold begins to burn out in some areas, and the insides of the catalytic converter crumble.

In Russia, the octane number usually does not correspond to the one declared by the supplier on the price tag of the product, therefore 4G69 should be operated at least on AI-95 gasoline.

Overview of faults and how to fix them

At high speeds, that is, in motion, the 4G69 motor is 100% likely to bend the valve with the ICE pistons that meet them. Other malfunctions include the following cases:

The owner of a car with a 4G69 engine should understand that the resources of most units are interconnected with each other. The lowest of them is for the rollers and the balancer shaft bearing, so along with these consumables, you have to change the balancer and timing belt at the same time.

Motor tuning options

For 2.4-liter aspirated engines, which include the 4G69 engine by default, mechanical tuning is practically useless for a number of reasons:

  • the cylinder diameter and piston stroke are already increased, and the weight of the SHPG is lightened;
  • cylinder head grinding and a 4:1 exhaust manifold are ineffective here.

The most commonly used tuning is a turbocharged type. For example, the Australian bureau RPW produces several variants of bolt-on turbo kits for Lancers and Outlanders with 4G69 engines. That is, turnkey ready-made kits with all the necessary gaskets, bolts and other fasteners.

RPW says the whales can deliver up to 300 horsepower. With. inclusive, that is, almost twice as much power as the basic version of the 4G69 - 165 hp. With. The main disadvantage is the high cost of the Bolt-On Kit, so most often they are assembled on their own:

  • powerful Walbro type pump with a capacity of 255 l / h;
  • high performance nozzles 560 cc;
  • Cylinder head from Lancer Evolution;
  • compressor or turbine;
  • intercooler for cooling;
  • oil pump for supplying lubricant to the turbine;
  • Camshaft with phases 280/224 degrees and a rise of 10.57 mm instead of stock parameters 274/216 degrees and a rise of 9.8 mm.

The camshaft and crankshaft, piston and connecting rods, valves and cylinder head remain the same. The 4G69 engine uses many parts from the 4G63 and 4G64 versions, but there is no complete interchangeability.

Thus, the 4G69 engine belongs to the Sirius family of in-line four-cylinder ICEs with a cast-iron block. But inside it is the only one with MIVEC phase adjustment technology in the SOHC 16V gas distribution system. The engine is boosted only by turbocharging, has a high resource and is repaired / serviced by one's own hands without problems.

If you have any questions - leave them in the comments below the article. We or our visitors will be happy to answer them.

The 4G69 motor is a large power unit manufactured by Mitsubishi. A lot of modern engines of the 4G series were developed on the basis of the installation. The applicability of the engine is quite wide and many vehicle models received this unit.

Specifications and design

The 4G69 is a popular Mitsubishi Motors engine, and a continuation of the popular 4G64 engine. Of the changes, an increased height of the cylinder block can be noted.

Mitsubishi 4G69 engine on the Evolution hood.

The designers increased the cylinder diameter to 87 mm (it was 86.5 mm), installed lightweight pistons (278 g against 354 g on 4G64), a light crankshaft (14.9 kg against 15.8 kg on 4G64) and connecting rods (530 g against 623 g).

The cylinder head is new, with a system for changing the valve timing on the intake shaft and the height of the MIVEC valves, the diameter of the intake valves has increased to 34 mm, exhaust to 30.5 mm.

There are no hydraulic lifters on the 4G69, so every 40-50 thousand km it is necessary to adjust the valves, the clearances of the inlet valves for hot 0.2 mm, exhaust 0.3 mm.

Service

Maintenance of the 4G69 power unit is carried out as standard for the entire line of engines. The service interval, according to the manufacturer's standards, is 10,000 km. To save the engine resource, it is recommended to carry out the oil and filter change procedure every 8,000 km.

Maintenance and repair of the head 4G69.

Faults and repairs

Like all powertrains, the 4G69 has a number of flaws that appear throughout the entire production line. Let's consider the main ones:

  • balancing shafts. Insufficient lubrication can lead to jamming of the shafts, and, accordingly, will break the timing belt. Long live head repair. It is recommended to fill in only high-quality engine oil and carry out maintenance on time.
  • Motor vibration. This means that the motor mount has worn out.
  • Floats idle. In this case, the problem may occur in one of the nodes: injectors, temperature sensor, dirty throttle and idle speed control.

Conclusion

The 4G69 engine is a fairly powerful and reliable power unit manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors. He loves high-quality parts and consumables, and is quite picky about fuel. Maintenance is recommended every 8000 km.

The 4G69 unit was the last in the famous Mitsubishi Sirius series. His debut took place in 2003, and although, after 2 years, the Japanese auto manufacturer replaced the engine with another, more modern one, its production did not stop completely.

Technical capabilities

Today, the production of an in-line 4-cylinder 2.4-liter engine and components for it continues under license in China. In addition, the 4g69 engine can be bought from Japan and some European countries, because it was originally installed on the Outlander and Grandis model lines, intended for the world market.

Despite the working volume of 2.4 liters, the fuel consumption of the 4g69 does not exceed 9.5 liters per 100 km on average. This flow rate was achieved by using in the motor device:

  • electronic fuel supply control;
  • variable valve lift;
  • MIVEC system;
  • cast iron cylinder block;
  • multi-point fuel supply;
  • single-shaft 16-valve cylinder head;
  • timing belt drive.

If replacement is necessary, not only Grandis or Outlander owners can buy a Mitsubishi 2.4 4g69 engine. The range of application of this motor is quite wide today. (See table)

How to increase the service life of the 4G69 unit

As practice shows, the engine resource with proper maintenance is enough for a run of more than 400 thousand km. To do this, it is enough to change the belt and rollers on the timing drive after 90 thousand, and also to change the engine oil every 8-9 thousand.

The motor itself does not have any characteristic serious shortcomings. But there is a reason that can lead to a loss of performance of the internal combustion engine 4g69 - the untimely elimination of the problem with the balance shafts.

Experts do not recommend repairing the engine due to the presence of non-separable components and the high cost of the services of minders. Often, a used motor is cheaper than capital, so the game is not worth the candle, especially considering that buying a used 4g69 in Moscow or in another region of the Russian Federation is not a problem.

Imported motors

Due to the fact that the problem with balance shafts arises from the use of low-grade fuel and low-quality oil, experts recommend buying a contract to replace the 4g69 internal combustion engine. The price of such a motor is justified by the seller's guarantees and less output.

Unlike our compatriots, foreign sellers provide an opportunity to eliminate the problems identified in the motor at their expense, and this is perhaps the most weighty argument in favor of "contractors".

You can purchase a 4g69 contract motor, as well as any other unit without a run in the Russian Federation, with the help of our company.
