Weaknesses of kia sportage 3. Weaknesses and shortcomings of the third generation kia sportage

20.08.2016

To date, four generations have been presented to domestic motorists kia, in 1993 the first generation of Sportage appeared on the market, which was sold around the world in considerable quantities, in 2004 the second generation appeared on sale. In March 2010, the time has come for the third generation, which is very different from previous versions in appearance, technical characteristics and price. It's no secret that the third generation Kia Sportage attracts its customers with its bright interior and exterior design, in addition, previous generations have gained a reputation for reliable cars, which is especially important for a used car buyer. And here how reliable the third generation turned out to be and whether it is worth considering buying a Kia Sportage 3 with mileage, now let's try to figure it out.

Advantages and disadvantages of Kia Sportage 3 with mileage.

As domestic operating experience has shown, the paintwork of the body, like that of many modern cars, is not particularly resistant to external influences, small chips and scratches appear quite quickly. At the same time, the metal has good corrosion resistance. Quite often, owners blame poorly closing front doors, this problem is solved by lubricating the locks. In winter, a crack may appear on the windshield in the area of \u200b\u200bthe heated wipers, this is a fairly common problem, so when choosing a used car, pay attention to which glass is installed, original or not. As on many cars, due to the lack of ventilation holes, the front optics fog up in the daylight area, while the electrician does not present surprises.

Kia Sportage 3 engines.

Kia Sportage 3 is equipped with one 2-liter gasoline engine (150 hp), two two-liter (136 and 184 hp) and 1.7-liter diesel engines. As domestic operating experience has shown, there are no problems with any of the types of engines, in rare cases, owners are faced with a spontaneous engine stop during braking, this feature occurs only on cars with automatic transmission and is associated with malfunctions in the algorithm of the electronic control unit. Many do not like the specific robot of the gas pump, which makes a whistling sound, it is worth noting that this sound is not a signal that the pump will soon fail. It is difficult to call the Kia Sportage 3 economical, in the urban cycle the gasoline version consumes 12-15 liters, and in the mixed cycle 9-12 liters. As for the maintenance of power units, diesel versions will cost a little more.

Transmission Kia Sportage 3.

Kia Sportage is equipped with a manual and automatic transmission, as operating experience has shown, in general, transmissions work without any complaints, but on some cars the automatic transmission can be a little disturbing. In an automatic transmission, the problem of box freezing is not uncommon (when trying to accelerate sharply, the engine speed increases, and the speed remains unchanged for 2 to 3 seconds). In some cases, the car remains stationary after the selector is moved to the "R" or "D" position, the movement begins after 2 - 5 seconds of inactivity with a strong jerk. The official service was never able to diagnose the cause of this behavior of the transmission, in some cases it helps to replace the valve body, if this does not help, the service will offer to replace the gearbox with a new one. Otherwise, the owners have no complaints about the automatic transmission and mechanics.

Suspension Kia Sportage 3.

As operating experience has shown, the suspension in the third generation Sportage is not as reliable as its predecessors, but it is still significantly more reliable than many competitors. On some vehicles, there is a failure of the all-wheel drive due to the destruction of the rear gearbox and the failure of the clutch pump. In the rear suspension, the springs can sag at a run of 30,000, because of this, extraneous sounds begin to be heard in the suspension, and the shock absorber corrugation can knock even in the rear suspension. In the front suspension, stabilizer struts and shock absorbers are often disturbed.

Salon.

The front panel is made of soft plastic and does not bother with extraneous sounds over time, the rest of the interior trim materials are also of fairly good quality and do not lose their original appearance after prolonged use. Landing and chairs are very comfortable, but the not very good location of the microlift control knob deserves criticism, the fact is that when boarding and disembarking, the handle is pressed involuntarily and the chair gradually lowers. After restyling in 2012, this problem was eliminated.

Outcome:

Kia Sportage has a modern interior and exterior design, and is equally well suited for both city driving and cross-country travel. Four-wheel drive helps to overcome small impassability well, but it is not worth considering this car for constant fishing and hunting trips, since the car is more intended for movement in the city.

Advantages:

  • Controllability.
  • Noise isolation.
  • The quality of interior finishing materials.
  • Reliable engines.

Flaws:

  • Weak paint finish.
  • Automatic transmission stuck.
  • High fuel consumption in the gasoline version.
  • Large front stoics block the view.
  • Regular audio system is not for music lovers.

Weaknesses and shortcomings of the third generation Kia Sportage

At the very beginning, I would like to say that the Kia brand and its models are quickly conquering not only Russian markets, but also Asian and Western ones. And one of the one popular is the Kia brand model is Kia Sportage. As you know, each car has its own shortcomings, illnesses, shortcomings and, in general, weaknesses. We are discussing the popular problem of the Ford Focus with a 1.8 liter engine. When the idle speed floats, the car stalls and twitches when starting to move. Battery for renault logan (Renault Logan), produced from 2004 to 2018. With an engine of 1.4, 1.5, 1.6 liters. Therefore, further we will talk about the weaknesses and shortcomings that attracted the attention of the owners of this car and which every potential buyer should be aware of.

Weaknesses of Kia Sportage 3

By exhaust system.

The trouble here is the connection of the corrugations with the exhaust pipe, which often leads to appearing sounds in the form of rattling. In this case, this is most likely also a design flaw. A more serious weakness in the Kia Sportage's exhaust system is the catalytic converter (gasoline engines) and particulate filter (diesel engines), which tend to clog and lead to additional replacement or removal costs. This is due to the low quality of Russian fuel, not only diesel fuel, but also gasoline. Engine oil for Kia Rio 3 with a 1.6 engine. Engine problems (kia sportage) - forum. We can say there is nothing critical in the box itself. Typical symptoms of a malfunction on a Kia seed: a decrease in engine power (deterioration in acceleration dynamics, a decrease in maximum developed speed), coupled with increased fuel consumption. There were cases of violation of the algorithm of the automatic transmission electronic control unit. This problem manifested itself in the form of an arbitrary stop of the engine when braking at low speeds. Another unpleasant moment with regard to the box is its “hanging” both when moving when you press the gas pedal, and in place when you try to start either forward or backward. Engine problems!!! Be at least 3-4 points at idle. This is 3 (kia sportage. Of course, all these nuances are inconvenient, but you can still operate the car. In the rear suspension, almost the same problem is observed on all cars in the form of spring sagging. Exterior. The 2016 Kia sportage will be in many ways similar to its current generation counterpart, which is actively sold in our country. This happened already in the region of 20 thousand km. mileage after purchase. On the front suspension, weak factory shock absorbers and stabilizer struts can also be noted.

The steering rack is generally a problem not only for the Kia Sportage, but for most cars. Therefore, when buying, you should ride and pay attention to the absence of extraneous knocks on the steering wheel when driving through bumps in the road.

It seems to be weak here, but it is the doors that cause a lot of discontent among drivers. The point is that closing the doors requires a little more effort than usual. There are practically no cars that would please with high-quality paintwork. On Sportage the problem lies in the fragility of the paintwork, which leads to the rapid appearance of chips. When buying, inspecting the car is not difficult and checking the condition of the paintwork is the responsibility of every future owner of this car.

The windshield is one of the sores of the Sportage. Timing belt replacement for volkswagen passat b5 1.8t with awt engine. The awt engine was installed on the following vehicles. The reason for this is the poor quality of the material. Most people face this problem in winter when the car is warming up, while the glass cracks in the area of the wiper blades.

Relatively recently, alarm bells began to appear on Russian club forums and social networks about the reliability of the 2.0-liter KIA / Hyundai G4KD engine, associated with the appearance of knocks in the cylinder-piston group (CPG). At the same time, problems with these engines are not heard in Belarus. What is it - the features of Russian exploitation, as some say, or is it a technological miscalculation? To find out, abw.by journalists assembled several cars and sent them for endoscopy at the CPH.

To begin with, the G4KD (Theta II) and 4B11 "clone" engines are built on the architecture of the Global Engine Alliance - an alliance created by Chrysler, Mitsubishi and Hyundai, but at the initiative of Hyundai. Each company made some adjustments for its brand, but the architecture remained the same. The main part of the development was carried out by Hyundai.

The motor is completely aluminum, contains four valves per cylinder, two camshafts in the cylinder head (DOHC), as well as a variable valve timing system with MIVEC electronic control (intake and exhaust). Accordingly, on Korean cars, the letter designation is G4KD, on Japanese cars - 4B11. The motor was installed on KIA Cerato, KIA Optima, KIA Sportage, Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai ix35, Hyundai Sonata, Mitsubishi Lancer, Mitsubishi Outlander, Mitsubishi ASX and numerous American-made Chrysler and Dodge models.

Based on this unit, the G4KE (Theta II) / 4B12 engine with a working volume of 2.4 liters was created. In addition, on the basis of 4B11, a turbo version 4B11T was created for sports Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart.

“The owner of a non-warranty KIA Sportage recently contacted me,” says a car repairman from Minsk. “The car arrived from Russia a year ago, there are all service documents - it was serviced at a dealer. Here the owner did not drive even 8,000 kilometers. At first, the owner went to a Hyundai dealer, where they listened to the car, they said that the piston was knocking, they say, bullies, remove the engine, sleeve, change the piston - we are aware of the problem ... We did not believe it, we went for endoscopy. It turns out that the guys from Hyundai were right What I saw is normal for old engines with mileage of 400-600 thousand, working for years on mud, with a holey sock instead of an air filter, but not at all on a four-year KIA with careful mileage of 120 thousand. , plentiful and ugly. Still shallow, as it rattled recently, about 500 kilometers ago. Compression measurement showed 13-12-13-13. That is, the engine is still "alive", but in the second cylinder the pressure is already falling. Another 10 thousand kilometers, and it will consume oil for waste and "breathe" into the oil filler neck. After 50 thousand, it will build and "die". If it doesn't jam earlier."

Having removed the pan and found metal powder in it, the motor was dismantled and disassembled. It turned out that scuffs are present in all cylinders on the front and rear walls. In this case, the most damage is in the second, third and fourth "pots".

Needless to say, the pistons suffered as well. After digging around on the Internet, we found out that the case is not at all isolated.

There are already 640 (!) Pages of discussions on this issue on the Russian forum of the KIA club, many cases of problems with the G4KD CPG are described on drive2.ru, and there are suspiciously many videos on YouTube about teases and knocks of the Korean motor. Symptoms are as follows: in the period of 50.000-150.000 km, the engine has knocks "on the cold". The noise gets louder as the car gets warmer and stops disappearing as it warms up. An autopsy shows the presence of scoring on the "skirts" of the pistons and cylinder walls. And it doesn’t matter where the car was serviced, at a dealer, at third-party service stations or in garages.

Interestingly, a recall campaign was even carried out in the USA, affecting half a million (!) Cars with engines of the Theta II series, which includes the motor we designated. In addition, there was a campaign to extend the engine warranty. But a slightly different problem was stated there, connected with the blocking of oil channels by metal shavings, which led to oil starvation and engine shutdown.

Nevertheless, a large number of Korean cars with these engines have been sold in Belarus, and it seems that little is heard about the problem on our forums, unlike Russian forums. Initially, abw.by learned about the issue from the story with the KIA Sportage engine from a Minsk auto repairman: it seems that the mileage is low, and the engine has already required repair due to scuffing.

To find out if these problems are far-fetched, abw.by contacted the KIA Sportage club.

In total, four cars with knocking engines were found in Minsk (in two cases, the knocks were already “hot”), of which three cars eventually participated in our “dismantling”. They also invited the owners of two cars with a mileage of 70,000 and 140,000 km, who did not complain about knocking.

There were problems with the endoscope. "Videomaster PRO" sent from Russia does not see the cylinder walls. It turns out that there are no endoscopists in Minsk. There is only an individual entrepreneur, an experienced auto repairman who is engaged in engine endoscopy. By the way, a car was diagnosed with him a month ago, the internal contents of the engine of which are shown at the beginning of the article.

The endoscope at the master is a special medical one. The probe can be rotated in any direction and bent with special "twists". The cylinder walls are very visible. But the problem is that the device does not take a photo. There are two more Chinese electronic endoscopes in service, but there were problems with them in the process of work. In general, we look into the cylinders with a medical optical endoscope.

The first vehicle inspected in 2011 has already covered 87,000 km. Bought new from a Belarusian dealer, after which it was operated by one owner. After the end of the warranty, there were knocks "on the cold". Over time, they were also present after the engine warmed up, however, noticeably quieter. At the same time, before warming up the engine, small vibrations began to be felt.

The day before the experiment, the owner visited a service station of an official KIA dealer. The "officials" did not have an endoscope, but the mechanics by ear determined that there was a badass in the cylinders. Like, this is a known problem, it is necessary to open the engine and change the cylinder block at a cost of about $4,000.

The owner claims that he drives calmly, the first kilometers he presses the "gas" carefully. The car is regularly serviced at the dealer. Moreover, he even reduced the maintenance interval from 15,000 to 10,000-12,000 km. The oil recommended by our dealer is poured into the crankcase - Motul 8100 5w30.

We remove the coils, we take out the candles. And we see that the insulators of the candles are broken. Interestingly, this pattern was observed in all inspected Sportage, where NGK candles were used.

Moreover, it even breaks through candles that were replaced less than 10,000 km ago. The regulation for their replacement is as much as 30,000 km. A lot of. But there were whole Boschs on one car, so, most likely, it was the candles.

We look into the cylinders with an endoscope - we find strong scuffs in the second and third cylinders, which in total occupy almost 2/3 of the entire circumference on both sides. In the fourth, there are fewer of them, but they are there. The first cylinder is clean. According to the auto repairman, he did not see scoring in the upper part of the cylinders, which indicates that the piston "skirt" leaves scratches.

Looking ahead: soot on the bottom of the pistons is found in all machines, somewhere less, somewhere more. The master qualifies the amount of deposits as "average", but on these runs there should not be such a picture at all.
What's next? Over time, the problem progresses. Knocks will intensify, a strong maslozhor will begin. After a while, the engine will simply stop starting. Expensive engine repairs (replacing the cylinder block or sleeve) can no longer be avoided. When exactly this will happen is difficult to say.

Next car 2011 onwards was also bought in Minsk. At the moment, the mileage is 109.000 km, the warranty is over. The owner is concerned about knocking "on the cold". The car was serviced on time, in the cold it warmed up for a short time, the driving style is calm. Total and Zic 5w30 oils were used. The dealer stopped servicing the car after the third MOT.

However, we listen - the knock is perfectly audible and "hot". Of all the machines here, we heard the loudest and most obvious knock. But even it is not audible in the cabin after warming up.

As expected, seizures were found in all cylinders. Moreover, the most problems are in the second and third, where the bullies are located over a large area around the circumference of the front and rear walls. There are fewer problems in the first and fourth cylinders, although the seizures are concentrated in a relatively small area on the side of the exhaust manifold, but they are very deep. Nagar on the bottom of the pistons of the engine of this machine is the most. In general, the most advanced option. But, according to the owner, there seems to be no oil zhora yet.

The owner of the next car did not complain about knocking. The mileage is only 76,000 km, the year of manufacture is 2012, the owner bought it in Russia when there were 42,000 km on the odometer. Service book with marks on the passage of MOT available. In Russia, Shell 5w30 oil was poured every 11,000-12,000 km, in Belarus, Kroon-Oil 5w30 oil is changed at an unofficial service station every 7,000-8,000 km. There are orders, orders, original spare parts were used, so the owner hopes to maintain the guarantee in Russia.

There are no scuffs in the first cylinder, but strong scratches were found in the fourth in a small area on the side of the exhaust manifold. In the second and third - small badass on the release side. The owner did not complain about the knocks, but the minder still heard small "snorts" "on the cold". There is no oil consumption.

The next car arrived from Russia in 2015. At the time of purchase, the mileage was 86,000 km, now 115,000. Knocks after starting the engine appeared when the owner read the forums. Yes, yes, perhaps many of them simply do not hear.

The presence of problems in the cylinders was confirmed. On the walls of the second and third cylinders - medium scuffs from the side of the exhaust manifold. The first cylinder is clean, the fourth has a couple of scratches on the back wall. There is not much Nagara relative to other cars, but still clearly not at 115,000 km of run.

It was this car that the journalists tried to shoot with Chinese USB endoscopes. The first saw only the piston, the second nevertheless recorded vertical scratches on the cylinder wall. True, we managed to turn the camera at a small angle, so the wall is visible only at the very bottom. After five minutes of trying, the probe overheated and the device turned off forever.

By the way, pay attention to the ends of the body of the candles. It is at the second and third candles that carbon deposits are noticeable. So, if you suspect a G4KD is bad, but you don't have an endoscope, you can try to unscrew the plugs and look at the ends of the case. Black deposits will indicate that not everything is in order in the cylinder-piston group.

In general, the car is still driving, how much more it will drive is unknown, but the problems have already begun.

Black Sportage 2012 onwards ran the most - 140,000 km, bought with a mileage of 40,000 km in Russia. Almost nothing is known about the service there. The first drained oil surprised the owner: in appearance, either it had not been changed for a very long time, or it was counterfeit. The sticker says that Shell oil was poured. After purchase, the owner uses Zic 5w30. A black crust of deposits formed on the dipstick - the owner had to clean it off for a long time. The engine sounded very loud, but after service it began to work normally.

In Belarus, the car was serviced properly and in a timely manner, but the owner admits that he likes to press the gas pedal well. True, it does this only after the engine is fully warmed up, before that it drives carefully. Auto start is also installed, so the engine warms up for some time at idle before starting.

The owner did not report any extraneous sounds, it was a completely random car, but "cold" knocks are still audible.

We looked at the oil level, figured out what it was like 5000 km ago - a small consumption is still present, about 200-250 g per 5000 km.

There is only one scratch on the first cylinder. The second cylinder on the exhaust side is medium scoring, and the same as on the previous car. In the third cylinder, medium scratches are located on both sides, in the fourth - only on the back wall, but deep enough. Seizure angle - 15-20°.

There are carbon deposits on the ends of three candles, except for one - the first cylinder, on the wall of which there is only one scratch.

What is the result? We dismantled one engine with our own eyes. Examined five more motors - badass were found in all. In three out of five cases, the owners reported the presence of knocks - we took these machines for endoscopy specifically to find out the cause of the knocks. The other two were chosen quite randomly, the owners did not talk about knocking or any problems.

To be honest, it is strange that all three machines with the declared presence of extraneous sounds will have any problems. After all, anything can knock or not knock at all. A motorist can take for extraneous sounds the usual chirping of nozzles, problems with the timing drive, or the operation of unadjusted valves, since the G4KD does not have hydraulic compensators, the valves need to be adjusted. But no, there are bullies in three cars. In addition, they were found in cars whose owners did not hear any knocks ... And another car with a knock did not reach the endoscopy. In general, this is surprising.

No regularity could be identified. The crankcases for these engines are different: there are both 4-liter and 6-liter ones. During the inspection, there were mainly cars with a filling capacity of 6 liters, but this is unlikely to affect anything. Oils were used in a variety of ways. Maintenance, as the owners assure, was carried out only according to the regulations, and some of them reduced the oil change interval. Two cars were bought in Belarus, four were brought in during the favorable exchange rate of the ruble from Russia. Some cars were serviced at official dealers, there are service documents, others - at unofficial service stations. "Automatic", "mechanics"? Doesn't matter.

The only thing that has been revealed is that different cars develop bullying with different "intensity". On one of them, at 115,000 km, the onset of problems was diagnosed, and the second at 87,000 km will soon need repairs. Also, judging by the reviews, the problem did not affect the owners of Mitsubishi, under the hood of which a copy of the G4KD - 4B11 is installed. At least nothing is heard about it.

There is an opinion that the problem lies in poor-quality maintenance of Russian cars, counterfeit oil, bad gasoline and aggressive driving, especially when it is cold. Of course, illiterate operation exacerbates the problem, but if it were the main reason, then already half of Belarusian and Russian cars would be in line for engine overhaul.

You can guess about the reason indefinitely, besides, we are not KIA or Hyundai engineers, we have no statistical data. But there is an assumption by experienced car repairmen that the fault is in the calculation of thermal expansions. It seems to us that the version looks very convincing.

“When designing any engine, the thermal expansion coefficients of the body are calculated and selected,” says the auto repairman Alexander. “In this case, most likely, we are talking about the wrong selection of the thermal gap in the piston-cylinder pair or the wrong choice of piston material and its shape. When the engine is running, especially in an increased speed range, the oil film is shed from the cylinder walls with the transition to semi-dry friction. The consequence of such engine operation is scuffing or "sticking" on the cylinder walls. An increase in clearances in the CPG assemblies due to semi-dry friction causes piston distortion and knocking in the engine caused by the impact of the "skirt" of the piston when shifting against the cylinder wall. The situation is aggravated by the high degree of forcing and the temperature regime of the engine, the visually insufficient area of the water channels of the block or the insufficient efficiency of the water pump. This version is supported by the fact that it is always the most damaged - the second and third cylinders, that is, the most heat-loaded at a distance from the water pump. Based on the foregoing, most likely, there is a constructive miscalculation.

Can misuse of the vehicle cause such serious engine problems? No. Driving on a cold engine may exacerbate the problem, but cannot be the main cause of the problem. In the world practice of engine building, there are a lot of engines with aluminum blocks, and there are no such problems with cylinder walls. For example, the Renault/Volvo B5254 internal combustion engine or the B6284T turbocharged six-cylinder version. The manufacturer lays down the tolerance when calculating the CPG, as well as the absence of the need for special engine running-in after assembly.

Does the quality of fuel and lubricants affect the occurrence of scuffing in cylinders? No, it doesn't. The presence of at least one knock sensor in the G4KD injection system will prevent the engine from running on a fuel mixture that causes destructive knock due to poor quality fuel. The nature and type of wear cannot be caused by detonation in any way, since the "skirt" is damaged, and not the piston crown. There are no melting, bursting rings and inter-ring bulkheads. The quality of fuels and lubricants and untimely replacement are expressed in the form of tar / lacquer deposits on engine parts and cause premature wear of the crankshaft liners, rings "dip" and increased oil consumption. There were no such problems prior to the machine being repaired."

Often, oil nozzles are provided in engine blocks, which are designed to pour oil on the pistons from below, thereby cooling them, as well as improving cylinder lubrication. There are no such nozzles in the atmospheric version of this engine, they are only in the turbocharged version of the Japanese 4B11T, as well as in all diesel engines that are installed on the Sportage. Some motorists believe that their absence exacerbates the situation with G4KD - the piston overheats, which leads to a decrease in clearance.

True, there are engines without oil nozzles, which at the same time do not have problems with scuffing. It’s hard to say whether it’s the injectors or not, but if you wish, you can probably embed them into the block during a major overhaul. Also, perhaps, the installation of an oil-to-water heat exchanger from the "older" G4KE engine can help, since insufficient oil circulation "in the cold" in winter also exacerbates the situation. True, we did not carry out any calculations and examinations, so all this is just an assumption.

How to solve the problem if the engine knocked and began to consume oil for waste? Two options are available: either replacing the cylinder block, which is very expensive, or lining the block, which is also expensive, but at least makes sense. The second option is the most common. Standard pistons and rings, liners (fit from Toyota), a set of gaskets and other necessary parts for repair will cost, as we calculated, about $ 1000. With work and other little things, a tidy sum comes out: for example, the owner paid $ 1,750 for the repair of the Sportage from the very beginning of the article - a lot. At the same time, no one knows how long the motor passes after the sleeve, there are enough nuances here, hardly as many as the factory engine. If the car is under warranty, you are saved: there is a chance that the unit will be replaced under warranty.

Replacing the unit with a contract one? Also an option, but they are not particularly on sale yet. And if they appear, then we recommend buying such a used unit only after endoscopy of the CPG.

It is not yet known whether this is a massive problem, as journalists do not have statistics from the automaker and technical expertise. So far, only isolated cases have been recorded in Belarus.

But in any case, you need to be guided by a number of recommendations. Change high-quality oil at least once every 10,000 km, pour only 95th gasoline into the tank. Forget about traffic light races forever - this motor, apparently, does not like heavy loads. It is important to drive carefully until the engine reaches operating temperature. At the same time, it’s also not worth driving “in tightness”, but at the same time, the “gas” pedal must be literally stroked. You need to be especially careful in winter, it is recommended to warm up the engine before starting or install an autonomous heater.

And what will the representatives of the exclusive distributor of the KIA brand in the Republic of Belarus of the company "Avtopalas-M" say about this?

"Our car service center received single calls on the specified problem with the G4KD engine. Basically, they were related to non-compliance with the rules for operating the car: harsh operation, ignoring winter conditions, using low-quality fuels and lubricants and fuel, etc. Almost all calls are from legal entities, from which such an attitude towards the car prevails.

Warranty obligations are always fulfilled if the customer's claim is justified. In particular, we usually cannot prove that the vehicle has been subjected to severe use, such as high revs on a cold engine, in which case the vehicle assembly is subject to warranty replacement. At the same time, there were very few such cases for this engine. There can be no talk of mass character.

We recommend that all car owners carefully read and follow the operating instructions, carefully follow the recommendations of the masters, use only high-quality fuels and lubricants. This advice is universal for owners of any cars with any motors.
Are there any problems with the new generation of crossover? Said 2.0 engine was used for previous Sportage models. The new Sportage QLE model, which has been delivered to Belarus since May 2016, is equipped with a new engine."

Hyundai AutoGrad LLC also says that there are isolated cases of bullying in the engines of their Hyundai ix35. Perhaps that is the way it is.

We won't be 100% sure yet, but the G4KD story is strange. Yes, six cars are a drop in the sea of cars sold with this engine (not only KIA Sportage), we really have a lot of them. The Minsk club of Sportage fans has as many as 50 cars with mileage in the region of 100,000 km. And so far none of them have been overhauled, most owners do not complain about knocking. So far, no one is going to change cars in the club either.

But such noise on the Internet arises for a reason, and the results of our endoscopy of five motors and disassembly of one, to put it mildly, are surprising. In general, time will tell.

Kia Sportage third generation can be called one of the most liquid used cars. Used Korean crossovers find new owners very quickly. But is it possible to call the third generation Sportage also one of the most reliable "rogues"? Big question! No matter how much the owners of the Korean crossover would like to admit this, the car is not without serious design flaws.

Possible problems with the body

However, no one has any complaints about the quality of the Kia Sportage paintwork. Even on the oldest specimens, foci of corrosion are extremely rare. Nevertheless, it is worth approaching the inspection of the body of the car you like very seriously before buying. The fact is that the cost of the original body panels for the KIA Sportage is quite high. So restoring a car, even with seemingly minor damage, can be very costly. It also seems surprising that there are not so many more affordable body parts from third-party manufacturers on the market. Yes, and their quality is a big question.

When inspecting the Sportage, it does not hurt to check the performance of the front and rear optics. and lanterns on the Korean crossover burn out quite often. And the worst thing is that the weak link in the car's electrics has not yet been found. Another weak point of the Sportage of the first years of production is the driver's doors, which tend to sag after a run of 30-40 thousand kilometers. Fortunately, they can be adjusted quickly enough.

Do not be too lazy when inspecting the car to check the presence of a side seal on the left wing. On many cars, it has already been lost, which is fraught with moisture getting under the hood, which, under unfortunate circumstances, can flood the engine control unit. And if you let everything take its course, then very soon you will have to spend money on a new block.

From time to time, owners of a used KIA Sportage will have to save their money for the purchase of parking sensors, the resource of which does not hold water. It is possible that you will have to spend money on a rear-view camera. Its tightness leaves much to be desired.

What are the problems with the engine

But all these shortcomings are actually not so critical that they refuse to buy a car because of them. Rather, buying a used Sportage will have to be abandoned because of its engine. The two-liter gasoline powerhouse on pre-styling crossovers turned out to be extremely unsuccessful. Not only does its dynamic characteristics leave much to be desired, but also its resource is extremely low. Judge for yourself - already after 100 thousand kilometers in an atmospheric engine, the liners can turn. And worst of all, repairing a damaged engine is extremely difficult and expensive. The choice of spare parts is poor.

In addition to turning the liners, pre-styling owners may encounter flooding of the phase shifter clutch control valves. Most often this happens with a run of 80-100 thousand kilometers. After restyling, the two-liter engine became more reliable. Although it is possible that this reliability is only apparent, since most of the relatively fresh Kia Sportage have not yet managed to roll at least 100 thousand kilometers.

Diesel engines were also offered for the third generation Sportage, which were built on the same base, but due to different turbines, heads and fuel equipment, they produced different power - 136 or 184 horsepower. In these power units, as well as in gasoline engines, a gas distribution chain drive is used, which has proven to be very reliable. But that's where the positives end. There are enough disadvantages for Kia Sportage diesel engines. The main one is delicate fuel equipment, which begins to fail after a run of 100-120 thousand kilometers. So if you notice that there is more diesel fuel, and a warm car stops starting the first time, then be sure that you are clogged with chips that appeared as a result of high pressure wear. In this case, the piezo nozzles and the pump will have to be restored, which will cost a tidy sum. Buying new parts, of course, will be even more expensive.

The dual-mass flywheel has proven itself not too well on diesel KIA Sportage. He rarely nurses more than 90-100 thousand kilometers. But the turbines on diesel Sportage turned out to be unexpectedly long-lived. They are rarely changed. This is true for glow plugs as well. Owners of diesel crossovers do not face serious problems with the exhaust gas recirculation system.

The reliability of the box and suspension of the third generation Sportage

A manual gearbox in our market was offered only for petrol Sportage. And, unfortunately, there are a lot of complaints about the “mechanics” of the Korean crossover. Due to a manufacturing defect on cars that were produced in 2010-2011, the manual gearbox had to be changed under warranty after 30-40 thousand kilometers. Naturally, the Koreans quickly dealt with the problem that had arisen, but the sediment remained. So if you buy a used Sportage with "mechanics", then it is better to give preference to cars of the last years of production. Or better yet, choose a crossover with an automatic transmission. Unlike the "mechanics" it has an enviable reliability. Owners of the Sportage with an "automatic" will only have to periodically change the gear oil. The replacement interval in our conditions is better to be reduced to 40 thousand kilometers. It is a pity that only original oil with special Kia approvals can be poured into the box. Finding it is easy, but the price tag is not encouraging.

The plug-in all-wheel drive system on the third-generation Sportage has become more reliable than that on its predecessor, but it has not completely eliminated weaknesses. One of them is a splined connection that passes through the transfer case of the intermediate shaft and the right drive. On crossovers that were released in 2010-2011, it wore out literally after 40 thousand kilometers. Fortunately, official dealers changed defective parts under warranty. Otherwise, there are no complaints about the all-wheel drive transmission.

In the suspension of a Korean car, wheel bearings have the lowest resource. On new crossovers, they rarely withstood more than 40-60 thousand kilometers. Fortunately, most Sportage owners have already managed to replace them with more affordable analogues, which, moreover, last longer. Another nuisance that may await owners of used Korean crossovers is that the camber adjustment bolts in the rear arms turn sour over time. As a result - in the worst case, the usual operation "dismantling-collapse" can end with the replacement of the levers.

But what the Kia Sportage has no complaints about is the steering. And this equally applies to both hydraulic power steering and electric. Did not deserve special criticism and the brake system "Korean". Most crossover owners have already managed to change low-quality factory discs and pads to third-party products, after which they forgot about the brake system.

It turns out that such a popular third-generation used Kia Sportage in our country cannot boast of high reliability. Moreover, in the first years of the conveyor life, the design of the car was frankly “raw” at all. Then the situation improved significantly, but in terms of reliability, the Kia Sportage did not get close to the leaders in its class. And when buying a used crossover, this must be taken into account. You will have to call in for service on the Kia Sportage a little more often than we would like.

With the change of generations, Sportage has radically changed its appearance and acquired new options, but its popularity remains consistently high. What problems the owners of the model may face, which of the shortcomings have already been eliminated, and what does not apply to the problem at all, we were told by representatives of several dealerships of the brand.

Rapid wear of the front brake pads

Owners of the Kia Sportage of early batches sometimes noticed frighteningly fast wear of the front brake pads: in the region of 10,000 kilometers, noise appeared during braking, and bad grooves appeared on the brake discs, indicating wear.

The reason lay in the unsuccessful design features of the brakes. According to dealers, this problem was typical for models produced before the fall of 2016. After that, the necessary corrections were made to the design, and the brakes became noticeably more tenacious. In addition, a corresponding technical bulletin was issued, which ordered the replacement of brake pads and discs with new-style parts under warranty. What dealers did if the owners of Kia Sportage turned to them with complaints about noise and scoring on the surface of the brake discs.

Knocking in the steering rack

Knocking in the steering became the "calling card" of Sportage: this problem was also typical for the model, for a batch of cars produced from 2011 to 2013. Then there were many cases of warranty replacement rails, and the manufacturer released modified repair kits.

With the new Sportage, the story is similar: an unpleasant tapping coming from somewhere in the steering column when driving over bumps, moving along the comb and turning the steering wheel will make knowledgeable people remember the previous generation model.

However, the trouble is not so serious and is solved under warranty without any problems. It's all about the electric power steering motor, or rather, the installed damping element, which wears out quickly, starts to play a little and generates unpleasant taps and rattles.

The manufacturer has already eliminated this defect: the inner diameter of the damping clutch has been changed, which made it possible to get rid of the problem. Kia Sportage with a new model part has been mass-produced since the spring of 2016, and on models with old clutches, a warranty replacement is made for an improved part in case the owner contacts with typical complaints.

The "folk" method of struggle was not long in coming: some owners decide to deal with the knocks on their own and put a piece of a bicycle chamber under the damping element.

"Forgotten" drains

In the first batches of Kia Sportage, a small but annoying problem could sometimes arise: a signal light came on warning of an open rear door, while the door itself was closed. The reason for this was the moisture that fell on the lock connector, and it got there because there were simply no necessary drainage systems in the doors. Accordingly, in wet weather, all the moisture fell on the lock, which, by the way, can ultimately lead to corrosion.

However, dealers say that there were few calls with this problem - the manufacturer played ahead of the curve and organized a service campaign in a timely manner, in which drainage systems were installed in the rear doors. Corresponding changes were also introduced in production, so that on Kia Sportage released after the summer of 2016, door locks are no longer afraid of water. But if you bought a fresh but used Sportage from the first batches, it makes sense to check with the officials if the car needs to install these drainage systems.

Lane Keeping System Failure

The new generation Kia Sportage crossover is equipped with a very convenient and useful option - a traffic assistant in the lane. If the vehicle begins to move out of lane without the turn signal on, the system will beep. If the driver does not respond, the system will automatically correct the car in the lane.

Comfortable! True, it is possible that this system may fail. An illuminated LKAS warning light and DTC C1606 are sure signs that the system control module needs to be replaced.

Dealers did not recall particularly massive cases of failure of these blocks, but the problem itself exists. Its reason was the flaws in the fasteners of the internal components of the unit. The manufacturer solved the problem by installing blocks of a new improved sample, in which this problem was fixed. Around the fall of 2016, new LKAS system blocks began to be installed on the Kia Sportage, and on copies of earlier releases, these blocks were replaced under warranty in case of problems.

fogging headlights

Sweating headlights have traditionally become the subject of a fierce confrontation between car owners and automakers. Some believe that this is an unconditional defect and problem, the second - that this is a normal phenomenon, ordinary physics, which does not affect the quality and performance in any way.

Perhaps, in this context, complaints about the sweaty headlights of the Kia Sportage, which are occasionally encountered, are just one of thousands of examples of such confrontations. To put an end to this issue, the manufacturer even issued a separate service bulletin, which prescribes simply to convince customers that there is simply nothing to worry about in case of fogging.

"As a rule, we are faced with fogging, which disappears on its own, without outside intervention, within about 30 minutes of driving the car with the engine running and the headlights on. The cause of fogging is moisture condensing inside the headlight. Condensation is a normal physical process, and when there is no need to replace the headlight," the bulletin reads.

Of course, we are not talking about neglected cases when excessive condensate in the headlight forms a whole body of water, because of which the electrician runs the risk of "flying". However, dealers have not seen such cases with Kia Sportage.

Of course, the owners of classmates-competitors can gloat and be in full confidence that they definitely made the right choice and bought the most reliable and trouble-free car. But there are no perfect cars, and the fact that your favorite model has not yet appeared in this section means only one thing: we just haven’t got to it yet.
